First, we disclosed the news of Orlando Bloom battling with dyslexia, but we now have another huge star disclosing her secret.
During her interview with Vh1′s Behind the Music, which premiered on June 13, Christina Aguilera showed her vulnerable side by admitting that she is currently battling with depression.
She continues to say that, “it’s something that is always right below the surface, and it’s almost seductive to go to a place of sadness and darkness.” That possibly explains her sad singles, “Hurt” and “Beautiful.”
It may come shocking to you that this beautiful latina has depression, but many other celebrities have also dealt (or is currently dealing) with depression (i.e., Kurt Kobain, J.K. Rowling – author of The Harry Potter series, and Heath Ledger).
Many critics will criticize Christina for using this as a “ploy” to get album sales since she did just release an album. But, for any person, it takes a lot of courage to disclose to the public what you’re currently dealing with. We applaud her for that.
What do you think of this news? Does it come shocking, or is this just the norm?

I deal with depression. *shrug* it’s no big deal really.

Everyone gets depressed. The only difference is that celebrities can afford rehab and treatment more than we can.

She sure hides it well. It’s hard to think she ever was or is going through a depression, with majority of her songs about how she looks like she’s the shit and how sexy she is and what not.

FAMOUS OR NOT EVERYONE GOES THROUGH SOMETHING…

@xnotxbeautifulx@xanga - maybe not to you…

someone admitting they have depression doesn’t encourage me to buy their album. thats why i cant stand critics.. i love the womans voice and her songs are singable and fun.. but now i wanna watch her behind the music

i’m not surprised.
the amount of americans alone dealing with depression is consider alarming.so the fact that celebs are fighting it too doesn’t surprise me.and since it has the ability to be debilitating–im glad that she doesn’t let it ruin her.

I definitely don’t find this surprising. Depression isn’t rare. And celebrities are people too.

I think it is great that she is sharing with the public that she deals with depression. It is nothing to be ashamed of and maybe it will help others who are dealing with it, too.

I was watching her VH1 Storytellers today. I love that she can admit what hurts her and I loved when she would talk about her songs and what they mean to her, it was heartwarming. ‘I Am’ and ’Lift Me Up’ on the new album definitly show this side of her, aside from being two of the best songs on the CD (aside from ‘All I Need’ and ‘You Lost Me’ of course
)

It doesn’t really shock me. I mean, it’s a little weird since she always seems pretty (overly) confident in herself. But I’m no doctor, so I don’t know the various ways in which depression affects people. I think depression is pretty common, though.
Did anyone read about her saying that she is bisexual? Did that even really happen?

I could hear that the friggin Pope is depressed and not be surprised. Everyone has a time in their life where something feels very off for awhile and it just feels safer to slip into darkness. It’s actually very normal and a process most people need to go through in order to learn certain things about themselves and life in general.

Yeah and she also said she’s attracted to females… if you can’t see what she’s trying, you’re extremely naive.
guest
@xDanielle01@xanga - Yeah, exactly. Somehow it seems like she’s looking for more attention or something. She doesn’t sound sincere when discussing how she’s facing depression.

she is latina? why was i never aware of this?

I’m really not suprised. I really commend her for her courage though. As someone who had chronic depression for years, it sure as hell isn’t easy to talk about.

She’s half Ecuadorian, not sure how much Latin blood you have to have to be considered a Latina…. It does take a lot to reveal it to the public but I find it easier to write here that I battled depression for a year and a half, thean I found it to tell my parents. I’m a fan of Christina Aguilera, and given that I’ve listened to most of her songs, I can imagine that she has battled depression in the past. What I did not like about what she said was this: “And it’s almost seductive to go to a place of sadness and darkness.” I can appreciate that it might be for her, given that she is an artist. But what about the rest of us? We don’t all have the ability to express how we feel through music. She is able to take time off to battle her depression if she choses, even though I truly believe that it never goes away. There are so many people out there battling depression, that have to do everything else as well.
My apologies for my little rant….

just another name to add to the ever-growing list.

It doesn’t shock me, she’s just another person after all.
Most people suffer from depression at some point in their life, and I think she’s very brave to admit to having it, as some narrow minded people can find the issue ‘scary’.
I don’t think it’s a ploy just to get people to buy her new album either.

I hope she’s okay!

of course there depressed.. they are millionaires, whats not to be depressed about? LOL

It’s COBAIN raaaawr ><
And I hope she feels better soon

Depression just doesn’t effect non-celebrities. This was probably scary for her to do. I respect her for it.

Doesn’t surprise me.

why would anybody need to “admit” to suffering from depression? have they done something wrong?
i really think there could be a more appropriate/sensitive choice of word there…

*****Cobain!!!
