Have you heard of steampunk? It’s a genre of science fiction/fantasy that harkens back to the 19th century when steam power was the main form of energy and transportation. Think H.G. Wells and Jules Verne; gears and watchfobs; chrome and silver and brass.
But what we’re interested in is the current revival of steampunk fashion. The style is a throwback to the curvy feminine lines of the Victorian era with a dash of mechanical futurism. Here’s how to get a jump on constructing your own steampunk look (or simply adding a sleek touch of it to your style).
Cinched, elaborate jackets. Picture this gorgeous black jacket over a long cream-colored dress.
Corsets and vests. Reviving Victorian-era fashion means one major trend: the corset. Prepare to cinch yourself tight to get that hourglass, oh-so-retro shape.
Full skirts and petticoats. The 19th-century wasn’t rocked by the pencil skirt yet; dresses and silhouettes were full-bodied, flouncy, ruffled and feminine.
Striped tights. The vertical ribbing gives a hint of old-time-circus whimsy.
Ornate headwear. Think Edwardian fancery: feathers, crystal beads and veils make a hat haughty in a good way.
Gloves. Lacy gloves and corseted wristlets give your outfit a touch of old-fashioned feminine frills.
Goggles. Really? Yep! Devoted fans of steampunk accessorize with 19th century-style pilot’s gear. Talk about a chic way to keep your bangs out of your eyes.
Lace-up boots. Nothing says Victorian like tall, gilded, supple leather lace-up boots with heels.
Jewelry with exposed gears. Look for necklaces, rings and earrings with a mechanical toughness, like this one from JewelsbyNature on Etsy.
Do you like any elements of steampunk fashion, Lovelies?

Ohman I love steampunk, but I’m really not brave enough to dress the part outside of themed balls and conventions.

I looked into this like two years ago. I’m fascinated. I must say it might be a very good idea for me to do this. It looks so… Brams stokers meets Wild Wild West! LOL

I like all of it except the goggles –however, I can’t see myself actually wearing any of it on a regular basis, apart from the jacket, boots, and jewelry.

I only heard about it recently when a website I frequent did a “Steampunk” cake contest, and I had to ask my husband what it meant.

Steampunk looks whimsical, sharp, and really cool (I wish I could wear all those things!), but I feel it’s one of those fashions that is expensive to maintain. It think it’s because goth, emo, vintage, and preppy styles are pretty common and easily-reproducible and therefore cheaper. Steam punk clothing is more labor-intensive and elaborate (fancy stitching, ornamentation, the boning in corsets, etc.), and it shows!

this is a look I would have worn when I was younger. I think it is a little to costumish for me to attempt now. I probably would never do an entire outfit but I would wear pieces. I love the jacket, the tights, and the jewelry those are the most pieces I’d wear together.

I’m very proud to say I own some items! =D
@Ailean@xanga - Ebay is great for it too! I get like 98% of my accessories & clothes from there. The other 2% are lucky, affordable finds in mainstream stores.

Oooo, I love it, but I don’t think I could pull it off, lol.

Want a little of it in real time action? Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” vid is aswim with it. I love steampunk, in all it’s odd forms, clothing, furniture, “Mods” and even the steampunk kink. Nice post.

i don’t think anyone could wear any of the clothing in real life, but yeah, i’ve liked the jewelry for years now.

I don’t dress like this, as it doesn’t really suit me, but I love the style

That necklace is fucking fantastic.

Fantastic style.

Soon all the teenage girls will be doing it, thus making it uncool for another 100 years.

Love it. If I had the money, I would probably dress in elaborate costumes like this (and other themes) every day.

@Ailean@xanga - The flip side of that: those other styles are all easy to mass-market, after which you start to feel like just another money-making demographic. The Do-It-Yourself nature of steampunk clothing, though more labor-intensive, also means you’re more likely to end up with unique creations and difficult-to-reproduce ensembles.

Abney Park is a music group that does great things with this look and lifestyle!

Love that hat and those boots! They’d be great to wear to a Victorian Festival with my black lace gown and petticoats. Gorgeous!

I would really not mind that jacket. I’ve been looking for a decent pair of lace-up Victorian inspired boots for years. I’m never satisfied with the selection. Maybe it’s time I peruse Ebay…

I absolutely love steampunk! The clothing is so beautiful and fun.

@ChrisRusso@xanga - Oh, no doubt! Like, I said, it looks amazing and unique and edgy, and I totally wish I could wear everything in this post!
It’s quite interesting how people who DO follow steam-punk fashion (or any sort of very specific styles, be it goth, lolita, “hipster”, etc. etc.) are definitely more aware of what they wear and the amount of work that goes into their clothing and accessories as a reflection of themselves.

@FairyTalesAndWhiskey@xanga - if hot topic sold stuff like that they would be having a hell of a lot more business than I’m sure they do now. A lot of those things are hand made and VERY expensive that corset is more than likely custom made and cost about $200+ Im sure it will eventually be mass marketed and less fun and creative than it is now. My costume was actually built from my closet. It’s really cool stuff if you take the time to look into it on sites like etsy and clockwork couture.

So that’s what this style is called. I’ve loved this style for years. Never knew what it was called till now.
