I read this interesting opinion piece about book covers and I thought I’d share it with my readers. What say you people?
I’ve never given book covers much thought. I consider the removable ones (that usually cover hardcovers) annoying. But I can close my eyes and the image of my favorite book pops up. I guess it means more than I originally thought.
I’ve been talking to people about living in a world where books don’t exist for years. Call me an optimist but I don’t think that time will ever come. Like Bob Greene mentioned, at the very worst, books will be what old records are to some music enthusiasts. I know a Kindle could never replace a book for me. It doesn’t have the smell I love, It doesn’t betray its age the way a book does.
It’s not the freaking same.
Sure, I guess it would be more convenient to carry the electronic reading machine thingy around. Especially on the subway. But I would take the slight discomfort of a book’s bulk over an electronic one any day.
But that’s just me.

I’d rather have books.

I love books. I love the look, feel, and smell of them. Reading on an electronic device just isn’t the same.
I wish I could keep all the books I’ve ever read, but it would cost too much. I love owning pretty books.

For me, it depends on the book or the type of book. (shrugs) Electronic wouldn’t really cut it for me.

I looooveee opening a book and smelling it. Some books smell sooo good. I dunno what it is about them… I’ve tried reading books of the computer and kindles, my android, but it just doesn’t keep my intrest.

it depends. i’m not attached to books and go with whatever is most convenient… the words matter, not the medium. if Shakespeare has less of an impact because you read it online, i feel sorry for ya.

I prefer books. I have a very hard time reading long stories on a screen, although I did manage to read The Red Badge of Courage and most of Leaves of Grass on a computer. (It still sucked to do so.) I had a hard time adjusting to even online news articles; I’ve always preferred an actual newspaper, too.
I’ve edited a couple people’s books, too. It took a lot of emotional stamina to keep going. Staring at words on a bright screen for hours and trying to find errors isn’t exactly my idea of fun, but I was glad to have the opportunity to help.

I prefer reading from paper than from electronic, somehow. My favourite book is ‘the perks of being a wallflower’ (:

Books definately, there’s just something about the feel of a decent book in my hands that can’t be replaced by technology.

I agree. I could use a Kindle or something, but I would be the kind of person who would have another copy of the book on the shelf at home. There’s just something about holding a book and reading the pages that’s special.

oh the alchemist is a great book!
i prefer actual books too =]

I gotta admit those covers that come on hardbacks are annoying! I just store them away until I’m done with the book and then put them back on. Unless I’m lucky enough to get a library book where they tape down the cover. I love the smell of books too. Some smell great and some smell like BO but they’re all different and wonderful. I read a copy of Animal Farm once, it smelled like candy and ice cream and perfume, I swear it did.
Definitely paper and ink. Nothing like opening a new book for the first time, or quickly turning to the next page, or closing the book for the last time.
My favorite book is a toss up between Shogun by James Clavell and 1984 by George Orwell.
My favorite cover might be the newer cover for Shogun, since I read that book for soo long, or the cover of Prey by Micheal Crichton. Or the covers from the WoT books.

E-readers will never, ever replace books for me. I’m another one of those loves-the-smell-of-books kind of people. The first thing I do when I start reading a new book is smell the pages. It’s become a habit. Either way, I can’t get behind the technology. I get attached to the books I read and there’s nothing like holding a good book in your hands — ink, paper, and all.

I always wanted to get one of those electronic book things, but I LOVE REAL BOOKS. Nothing can replace that feeling of leafing through a good book and reading each and every page. I especially love finding old books where the pages are worn.
btw my favorite book is The Alchemist. He writes so many good books <3

We like books because we grew up with them, but imagine what a generation that has grown up with Kindles will think about books and Kindles when they’re like 16 years old? I’m 20 and I love my i-Pod, I don’t care for records and their cover art, just like the next generation will feel about Kindles and books.
However, having a hard copy is more convenient if you’re using the book for school, whether it’s taking notes of it or simply reading the book and writing your essay at the same time.

I prefer novels in paper in ink. I like the way new or old books smell, it adds to the reading experience.
@sexyscorpions@xanga - I love my iPod as well, but I’m sixteen and I’d rather have a record in a heartbeat! And I also appreciate the cover art of any cd I buy.

I love smelling the pages of a new book. Does that make me weird?
though I want an ereader, I’ll still have a bookshelf. There is just something comforting about curling up with a good book on a rainy day.

I’ve worked at Borders Books for too long to ever switch to electronic. yes they make more sense but when the internet / electricity ever go down I will have my best friends in books form all around.
I honestly love books more than pretty nearly everything, my own mini library is also a beautiful sanctuary. Used books are my favorites because I (like many other faithful readers) write notes / thoughts about the text in the margins. then when you trade / sell you used books others get to share your ideas. that will never never never happen with electronic readers.
(but if you do want a reader, check out the song ereader touch edition)

electronic novels could never replace print! i love the smell and feel of them. I also like to write notes on them sometimes…helps understand details we usually skim through
The alchemist is actually one of my favorite books of all time!!That one and the gardens of kyotocan’t think of my favorite book cover right now…

Real Books! E-Readers could never take the place of real books!

i got a kindle a little over a year ago, and while i use it a ton it hasn’t replaced the printed page either. if anything it’s increased how much i read, both electronically and in print.

Reading online sometimes hurts my eyes, so I just prefer books.

I much rather prefer the physical book opposed to the likes of the Kindle or the Nook. But honestly, I’d do both because honestly, unless I got the gift cards to get the book on the Kindle, I’d have to stick to the phyical book.
I agree with everyone else that I love the way the pages yellow and the smell of the book as it ages. It’s as if it’s getting wiser as it gets older like myself. (Or at least, I think… LOL)
As far as my favorites go….. Lord of the Rings (I remember bringing it on vacation and discovering it), The Wideacre Series as well as the The Other Boleyn Girl Series (I enjoy the historical content and plots that make you question yourself of how you would handle it). I also enjoy Jane Austen, Memoirs of A Geshia, and The Devil Wears Prada.
I also have read The Host by the same author that wrote the Twilight Series. There isn’t much sex or the like in it. (The author is Morman and it influences her writing.) But The Host is a plot that I haven’t seen elsewhere. It’s also a plot that makes you think about what you would do in situations it presents.
I understand why electronics like the Kindle have been popular. Who would want to tote around a book like Lord of the Rings (which is over a 1,000 pages long) when the Kindle could make it all the portable?
I would ask for Kindle. But I would still not give up my paperbacks. Mostly due to the fact I would still have it as a hard copy, even if I had it on my electronic book.

i prefer a book over reading it online
