In fairly recent pop culture, Lady GaGa and Ke$ha rattled the urban world with their outlandish performances and less-than-everyday wardrobes. Although inspirational, they seem to be fit the cliche of someone who strives to be different, not because that is who they are but in fact to get attention. A clever way to get the media and public’s attention, no doubt.
It seems that cliques have also formed, in society everywhere, with “freaks” or those who “nobody understands.” What is this sudden obsession with being different? It seems that when one separates themselves for being “too odd” or “different”, they group themselves with others who are the same. In a lot of cases, the difference seems forced. Regardless, it’s a vicious circle that proves nothing.
Do you think the Unique-ism is in response to contemporary culture? A cry for attention? Or something else?

It is business. Gathering attention is what makes you profitable.
guest
@Manstration@xanga - True. but it seems kesha’s really wants attention. Maybe lady gaga just has a crazy style of dressing- maybe. I’m not gonna lie, but some of their outfits look good, then on the other hand, some just look plain ridiculous!!
guest
The first poster beat me to it. It’s a business.
guest
Yes, much like the people who keep posting about it.
guest
Gaga & Ke$ha are not the same(level).
No matter what, I just love Gaga’s music.

I thought almost all girls are attention wh*re?
daffodil / 1975 posts
Of course they (and other people like them) are trying to call attention to themselves. If you read interviews they give, it’s the exact same thing, minus the freakish clothes that do not actually inspire anything more than an eye roll. They crave attention and (some) people are dumb enough to give to them.
I still say there should be a month-long ban on Gaga related postings on Lovelyish. People are growing tired of her.

Of course it’s for attention. They’re entertainers, that’s what they do.
guest
when you’re making a million for every weird thing you do, of course it’s for publicity!!! and i agree with the girl up there, kesha and gaga are so fucking different. i hate that kesha bitch.

She’s sucking as much as possible while she can. Her only forte is insanity’s creativity. She’s not talented and she’s surely not a beauty. Soon the next phase will take hold: humanitarian causes. Then she’ll wane away as if she never existed, a note in nothing.
I would respect her more and take to her cause of rejects if she talked about the aliens we all see.
Most of the rejects would like to stay in hiding and be moderately seen on screen to prevent being seen in the ordinary world. Like, having timeless jeans on some models/ actors since we keep it plain. It’s been seen. It’s nothing vintage. And some should inspire us to care and justify our condition.
Example: some days OMG! models have bad hair days and walk outside to get an extra shot. This makes us ruffled folk sometimes think that we’re just having a bad hair day instead of dry, fine baby hair that never turned adult and actually try to fix it then feel better. It’s not that we have crappy hair that we don’t even bother with anymore, it’s that we just had a bad hair day the one day of the year we looked. Now we’re good with a ponytail. And when someone says something about the omnipresent, we assume that we’re just having another bad hair day. It’s not that we have bad hair.

Anyone who doesnt fit into mainstream ideals are considered odd or “wanting attention”.
What I dont get is this: When a girl shows tits, ass & everything else, it’s awesome, fierce & makes money. Lady Gaga has TALENT, which is what I noticed first because I heard her music before I saw her. Yet people think she’s crazy for what she wears. It’s unusual, yes, but I admire her for wanting to stand out, not confirm to what people in record labels want her to be in order to sell.
Like for example, remember the boy band/girl group craze from the early 90s-early 00s. Those guys had talent yes but a majority of them were label manufactured groups & after the heat died down, they were let go & not all of them made good on solo careers. I’m sad because I still love & listen to alot of those great groups but the only one that came back were the Spice Girls. What’s good about them were they were FRIENDS as well as group mates & they’ve all had moderate success levels after splitting up.

Stop with these Lady Gaga posts.
They’re frivolous and annoying.
guest
I don’t like how Gaga is paired with Ke$ha. Gaga has way more talent than Ke$ha.
guest
attention whores.
simple as that
guest
I think Gaga loves dressing and looking the way she does, and there is nothing wrong with it. So what if it’s for attention or to sell records, because she’s pretty much doing both that just by Lovelyish always posting about her. She’s not going away any time soon.
Kesha on the otherhand, needs to get out of the music industry forever. She’s neither unique or talented.

we’re seriously even asking this question? of course they are.

They’re just having fun. :)

individuality is not a cry for attention.
although, i think kesha is looking for attention by scamming of off gaga.

no, gagas an artist and kesha, who knows

@flawsnall@xanga - Agreed -_-”

Not even reading this one. The answer is “yup.”
guest
IDK. Everyone is desperate for attention..
guest
Kesha is just copying Gaga. Kesha is unoriginal. Gaga will be remembered in 20 years… Kesha won’t. I know it’s not really on subject, but I really hate that the two of them are compared. That’s like comparing a Louis Vuitton handbag to a WalMart purse.
guest
kesha should gtfo. she sucks.
guest
Gaga has TALENT! She plays the piano amazingly and has a fantastic voice.
Ke$ha.. not so much.. she sounds good when she talks and it is autotuned!
I actually don’t think it has anything to do with how they dress.
It is how inapropriate their songs are.
guest
It’s what makes money. Her covered in Kermits freaks me out a little.
guest
this trend that you’re mentioning, I can trace it back to way back when, with the group of the “emos” who were looked down upon for being too different, and now that being different in an outlandish or “freakish” manner are becoming a trend, it’s ridiculous that you should trace it to lady gaga and kesha…my opinion, anyways.
guest
No shit.

They’re having fun and profiting from it

It doesn’t matter, 90% of celebrity’s fashion, style, makeup, career moves, speeches is pre-made for them. They are told most of the time what to do so it is not so much their personal choices as what other people think will make their client marketable. I am a mass communications major, public relations to be exact.
Plus they aren’t the only ones who ever tried being marketable by using a shock factor. Gaga is not unique if you look at her, she just takes “inspiration” from other pop media.
guest
@TakingxOverxMe@xanga - Glad I’m not the only one who was bothered by that. haha
Lady Gaga is not an attention whore. -.- I’m pretty sure she has explained enough why she dresses like that. Google/Youtube it. And Ke$ha is just trashy.
orchid / 138 posts
Ke$ha and Lady Gaga do not belong in the same category.
Gaga is talented. She can sing, she’s a performer, she does it all for her fans and she loves it.
Ke$ha is… well, we all know what Ke$ha is. She has a dollar sign in her name.
guest
Ke$ha can go fuck herself.

desperate for attention that you’re giving them right now…

they’re not desperate. they’re marketing a certain image, and it’s making them a ridiculous amount of money.

Yes.
guest
Well… Celebrities have to do things for attention.. That’s how they make their money…
guest
Someone please explain to me what Ke$ha has done to be considered ”inspirational”?
guest
That’s what media is ! Celebrity like them definitely wants attention!
guest
possibly, but I do not see what’s wrong with being unique
guest
there are some eccentric people out there (besides the rich ones) that no one ever really talks about, its more a freedom of expression rather then most things, yes it could be a cry out for attention, or it could be what they really are comfortable with, its like some girls or guys wearing what they want, rather then wearing what society would want them to wear.

More Kesha than GaGa. That’s just how Gaga is. She does her thing out there, and her songs are good. Plus she’s talented. Kesha is just………………………..I dunno. I don’t like her lol
guest
@mmmmichaela@xanga - ”She has a dollar sign on her name.” hahahah, made me laugh.

duh..

GOD, guys. Gaga does NOT have talent! She has fun dance beats, THAT’S IT.

lady gaga is not seeking for attention fully.
she is well known and recognized for her OWN MUSIC<no doubt i love eery single song of her.
i love calling her as teacher of fashion because she dare wear as weird and as unique she wants:)
guest
entertainers come and go, but there always has been and there always will be “society doesn’t understand me!” losers out there.
guest
I think it’s wrong to compare Ke$ha with Lady Gaga. One of them actually has talent, the other’s just an idiot. Gaga being the one with the talent. She’s unique. And even though some of her clothes are weird, at least she puts good music out… right? Ke$ha is just annoying, and hasn’t added anything worth anything to the music industry.
guest
They’re part of one of the biggest cries for attention—the entertainment industry.
guest
Kesha is so an attention whore, like the time when she broke into Prince’s home.
guest
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - Best. Response. Ever.

Cry for attention hands down. Maybe, next time she should wear neon arrow sign pointing at her like the signs outside of a store saying they’re open.
guest
Lady Gaga rules.
No questions asked.
guest
Im gonna type in all bold face so i stand out from everybody else. I wonder why i do that, is it cuz im desperate for attention? Yeah i think it is. I wonder if anyone else does this hmmmm lets scroll up and see.

honestly I think they are doing self expression… i don’t think either give one iota what anyone thinks of what they do good or bad.

LOVE THE GAGA
guest
no duh the entertainment buisness is built upon theatrics
guest
LMFAO DUH.
They have gimmicks. That’s how they’re famous. Yes, Lady Gaga has a great voice. No, Kesha can not sing for shit (a.k.a audo-tune in every one of her songs), but they both are more noticed for their fashion, make up, and hair.
guest
You know what. I enjoy that these girls are out of the box. But I don’t like how they think that they “define” pop culture. Because no one can, thats not what pop culture is about.
guest
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - Yeah, I actually couldn’t agree more.
guest
They are doing it for the money and the fame and I can’t hate the game
;p. But I’m not going to swallow the load about them being “different”
and “unique”. To me, they are just the same as any other pop artist.
It’s the same package in a different wrap. GaGa is just a glamed up version of Ke$ha.
I’m tired of this “I’m unique” and “I’m different” crap. And like you
said, they tend to group with the same people and it just makes them a
copy. I’m always being told that I’m strange or odd, but it’s not due to
my style or lack of, but my personality. Do I think I’m odd or strange?
No. I think I’m perfectly normal, but when I have people who call
themselves “unique” ostracizing me because I do not think the same way
or look the same way, it really makes me wonder.
daisy / 556 posts
Uh…actually its not sudden or new. Its been around for a long time. And, why people do it depends on the person. Yes, groups centered around being “different” are generally made up of the same kind of “different” and therefore everyone in the group is the “same” but in many instances that is the point. That, and raising awareness that people like you are out there and that you deserve to be noticed and treated with dignity and respect like every other person, not just cast out off to the side and ignored. If you ignore them, they will force you to acknowledge them and deal with them. Its a fight for a different kind of equality.
Lady Gaga (I don’t know about this Ke$ha person) has her eye-popping outfits for the specific reason to keep her name in the media and therefore to keep her name in the majority of people’s households, in the limelight, where she’ll get attention and be noticed. This is not necessarily a cry for her NEEDING personally to have attention, but more along the lines of good business sense for her type of business. She is an entertainer. The moment your fanbase (and even the people who don’t like you) forget all about you, you’re done. This is just one way that she keeps her business flourishing. She is hardly the first (there’s over 20 years of proof of entertainers doing outlandish things to get attention from the media and public to keep their business going, or did people forget about KISS and all the others before and after?) entertainer to draw such attention to herself and she will not be the last. Nor is or will be this Ke$ha person.
guest
@brittany__nicol3@xanga - Agreed 100%
guest
Gaga has talent tho!!! shes soooo good!! I totally agree with Gaga’s thoughts….there’s no point of being the same as every1 else…..
guest
Oh please, honey. If you ever really took a second to check out some of Gaga’s interviews, you’d find that she’s a soft-voiced, respectful, humble, and very kind person. Not at all what some who are bent on finding flaws assume when they see her strut her outlandish costumes at her shows. She does what she does because she’s committed to creating a character that people can depend on to be absolutely fabulous 110% of the time. Why else would any sane person bother to dress themselves up that way? it’s a lot of hard work to look the way Gaga does, but she does it anyways for the sake of her fans. She’s even mentioned a few times that she wants to create an atmosphere in her concerts where her fans can feel free to be as crazy and different as they want to be.
Gaga could’ve garnered the same amount of attention on her pure talent
alone, so no, this is not a cry for attention, this is merely Gaga expressing her unique and unconventional self as freely as she wants to, and for the sake of inspiring her fans to do the same. Completely honorable intentions and never, ever a cry for attention. Where the hell did you get that from? Honestly, it’s too bad there are people out there who try to discredit her out of their own jealousy, frustrations and insecurities, because they’re too normal and boring and not at all unique.
Now, Ke$ha on the other hand, is a different story.
guest
gagas got talent . shes amazing . but kesha . their just not the same

I think it’s jus a person’s style. I have a friend that wears odd things & she says it’s cuz she likes it.
