So ladies, you know and I know that we go through it when it’s “THAT TIME”. We cramp, we get grouchy and we have major BITCHTUDE. Some is worse than others and others are lucky enough to not have these issues. Now some of us love a pad (or a matress as my bff so politely calls them), some of us like tampons (which work great if you the active/athletic type). Then you have a few of us who don’t like either. I mean lets face it, pads work great but they slip and slide and after a while they are most unpleasant, sometimes they hold an odor and other times they are just plain useless. Tampons are great but hell no body wants to have a case of TSS (toxic shock syndrome).
So I decided to try this Instead thing. At first I thought “ewww… I don’t want that fluid that close to me” then I had other questions.
Like, what happens to it once you get ready to dispose of it? Does it hurt when you put it in/take it out? How long can wear it? How often should I change it? and a host of other questions. I admit I was a mite skeptical about this idea. What woman isn’t when you’re talking about inserting some foreign object into your vagina (by foreign I mean besides a penis)??So I tried it. Putting it in at first was difficult, at first and removing it, can be messy if you don’t pay attention. The best way, was to sit on the commode and pinch the sides of the cup, put it in as far as it will go and let your body do the rest. From there it will mold itself to how your innards are shaped and by the time you walk out of the bathroom, you don’t feel a thing.
So ladies, tell me have you tried Instead something similiar to it? What are your thoughts about this type of product like/dislike and why? If not, would you?

dude. that’s disgusting.

tampons hands down what r cups
guest
Huh, I’ll stick with my tampons XD
guest
I use both tampons and pads, depending on what kind of day I expect to have.
I have, however, been considering getting a cup for months now!I’ve heard nothing but good things about them.
I take it you’ve found your experiences with yours to be worth it? Is it as easy to take care of and deal with as they claim? lol
@Wac0madness@xanga - Cups are sort of funnel shaped except that instead of having a hollow tube at the end, the cups (such as the DivaCup) are sealed and trap the fluid from menstruation. They’re supposed to be more hygienic and easier to manage over all
orchid / 105 posts
I have never heard of these before…
guest
I bought them once and still have the mostly full box in my bathroom. I didn’t like them very much. I might give them another try once summer comes around though. It’d be nice not to have to worry about an escaping string:)
guest
i’ve thought about the cup thingy. its supposed to be more eco-friendly. i generally just use tampons, but i recently started buying the bleach-free kind. i don’t want no bleach up in my va-jay-jay.
guest
uh Ill pass……tampons do just fine and you dont have to worry abt getting TSS if you change them like youre suppose to.
guest
I’m sticking to pads. Lol.
guest
I will stick with tampons on lighter days and pads on heavier days.. this is like.. wayy.. gross!

I tried a type of cup (Diva Cup) and taking it out HURT. I’m very very good with pain and I almost passed out.
Never again.

@ImpaledFlutterBy@xanga - they dont sound more hygenic hmmm thats the next thing then the next generation will be using cups…ewww

those are awfully strange and idk if i wud try them….? =/ but i use tampons hands down w/ soccer and cheer and all cant afford pads lol

I’ll stick to pads thank you. This thing just seems like a hassle.
guest
i think i’ll try them once i’m living on my own (aka not in a college dorm/sharing the bathroom with lots of people)
guest
This just sounds very disgusting. why would you want something like that inside of you? what if it breaks and the fluids spill on you? that would be an embrassing mess. i think i shall stick to pads.
rose / 759 posts
ive heard it hurts extremely bad. the circumference is too much. :X
ill stick with tampons. i only use pads when im lounging around the house.
guest
I like my tampons, but I’ve wondered about these Diva Cup thingies for quite a while, and I want to try them.
guest
I’m so nervous to try the cups but I absolutely hate both tampons and pads. I find tampons to be the most superior of the two because I find pads terribly disgusting. They honestly feel like diapers and I don’t know how people think they’re comfortable. That being said, tampons are not comfortable for me either. :/ Lose/lose situation. Maybe some day I’ll try the cups.
@Wac0madness@xanga - I’d disagree with you there. Pads are not very hygienic you’re basically sitting in your own menstrual blood, and tampons aren’t much better. You can get TSS from wearing them (sometimes even if you take them out often enough) and they can leak much more easily than the cups.
guest
@NicoleMascara2010@xanga - lol, why wouldn’t you? Whats a good reason? People use tampons, whats worse, sticking sterile plastic up there or bleached cotton? I’m not sure about this specific brand, but if you get a diva cup, its impossible that they break. You could insert them wrong and they could leak a bit, but that’d be your own fault.
hydrangea / 72 posts
I’ve used a Divacup a few times, and it’s reusable. I don’t think Insteads are. –Anyway, getting it in is just fine, it’s just taking it out that I had most trouble with. I think I’ll give it another try this summer–apparently they’re better than tampons and pads, you just have to get the hang of how they work.
guest
gross. no.
daisy / 630 posts
I’ve used these, and they’re uncomfortable unless you get them in exactly right.
And taking them out is a mess.
not really worth it.
guest
I think I’ll stick with tampons. I’ve been using them since I was 12 (15 years now). I’ve never had TSS and I don’t know anyone who has. I took microbiology last year and the professor said that TSS from tampon use is actually EXTREMELY rare. You’re far more likely to get TSS from an untreated infection such as a cut or sore throat than using tampons.
guest
how is it impossible to break? its possible for anything to break at any time. that’d be just disgusting if you did happen to insert them wrong and they leaked.
guest
well , jeez , you`re late . the cups have been around for ages . but i think it`s a gross idea , there are even some cups that you can reuse Dx
daisy / 636 posts
I’ve tried the Diva cup, I wrote a post about it. Unfortunately, it was HUGE and didn’t fit in me. I was really dissappointed after paying $45 for it.
hydrangea / 70 posts
But imagine all those pads and tampons ending up in landfills… eww. If you use the reusable kind, enormous amounts of waste caused by tampons and pads could be prevented. I don’t see how it would be any more unhygenic than tampons or pads if you do it right, you sterilize them by boiling them, and you can keep them in longer than a tampon. You can even sleep in them from what I’ve heard. Yeah maybe it’s not as convenient, but it is time to get over ourselves and consider how we can protect the environment.
orchid / 179 posts
All three are gross to be honest. I use pads. I know its nasty but I’m not sticking anything up my cooch.
sunflower / 447 posts
Personally I find that sticking anything in there during my period, cups or tampons, makes my cramping worse. Sadly, I’ll have to stick with pads for the time being.
guest
Eww, gross!
guest
Is this the same as the Diva Cup? Sounds like it. It’s more economical, better for the environment and doesn’t contain all the nasty chemicals that tampons and pads do (which actually make you bleed more – did you know that?).
@HisKeiki@xanga - They make them in two sizes.
@Wac0madness@xanga - The “next generation”? How about now? A lot of people are using these right now.
guest
i don’t think i’ll be able to stomach taking out the cup and having to pour out the.. contents

I keep seeing posts about these things, and I am beginning to wonder myself what all the hooblah is about. Once Mother Nature starts visiting me once more, I might consider trying these (in an attempt to conform myself to a greener lifestyle). However, I’m a little grossed out by blood and can’t imagine washing this out all the time. I mean, other people in the house use the sink, too. It seems a little gross, right? And what happens when I need to clean it out in public? Nobody wants to see a woman washing the blood out of her menstrual cup. O.o

My older sister used those all the times. I can’t find them anywhere :[

I’ll stick with my pads. I think they’re more easier to use.

@MoonFaeEyryan@xanga - Umm really WHT ON EARTH!!!!!!!!
Um..I’ll stick with my whatever I use. This cup thing sounds stupid! Very stupid.
I might as will stick a shot glass up there…a plastic shot glass…eco friendly

I have a question: what happends to the liquid when you decided to run or jump OR randomly decide to do a cart wheel. Does it slide out the up? Ewww I could just imagine it like a cup of red juice being turned upside down inside me…EXTREEM EWAGE
sunflower / 451 posts
I haven’t used these, but I do use a moon cup. And once you get used to it, it’s pretty cool. You never have to run to the store to buy pads and tampons again, and you know you’re not filling the landfill with a bunch of used feminine hygiene products.
guest
Instead are not reusable.
For my cousin, they work great. I tried it out and it took me a few tries to put it in right and taking them out is a mess. I might have put them in wrong, but I know I have heavy periods and I leaked after a few hours using them.
I’m good with tampons.
guest
I mean if I ever came across them I would try it.. but I haven’t even seen them anywhere.
But I’ll stick to tampons, thank you.

How many posts about this can we do? These are similar to the Diva cup, but they are disposable. I suppose I would try these before investing in a Diva cup.
guest
I have been reading more and more about these cups lately maybe i will give it a try sounds a lot better than spending thousands on sanitary napkins and tampons through out my life
guest
I can’t even wrap my head around how many dumbasses there are on Xanga. I have never used these, but I have used a DivaCup for almost two years and it’s wonderful! I don’t understand how people can say cups are disgusting when tampons and pads are full of fucking bleach and chemicals…do you really want that in your body? THAT’S gross. Your period, on the other hand, is natural and not that disgusting. I can’t imagine being disgusted by something that comes out of my body…it’s your body you should LOVE it! Inserting and taking out takes a few tries to get the hang of, but it’s not that hard and if it hurts and/or leaks you’re doing it wrong. Cups are also way way way better for the environment. Stop being a fucking diva and think about something else for once. We’re taught to think our periods and our vaginas are gross but they are not. Cups users=smart people.

A friend talked me into trying Insteads. I’ll still use tampons every once in a while, but I’m a loyal Instead-user now. They’re awesome. So much more efficient for me. But that’s just me. I’ve introduced a couple of other girls to them as well, and it’s the same story. Love it.
guest
And honestly, tampons and pads are quite disgusting. How can a cup be any more so. I’d much have something collected and disposed of, rather than absorbed. Insteads (and cups in general) are safer for your body, for the environment, much cleaner, and less irritating and I could go on.
sunflower / 434 posts
This sounds weird. And I think pads are disgusting.
I only use tampons.
guest
@courtney_calamity@xanga - Calling tampon/pad users dumbasses was completely unnecessary. -_-
But with that said… I think I’ll stick with my pads.
Not completely ready for shoving things inside me yet. xD
guest
@sexncookies@xanga - Exactly.
The idea of cups is too much for me. The blood that comes out isn’t even normal vein blood.
sunflower / 391 posts
Tampons are the way to go. Just flush them down the fucking toilet, it’s the most simple thing ever. Besides, I don’t feel like sticking my fingers up there during that time of the month to fish out a friggin cup.
Why am I not surprised that some of you are even getting catty over what we use during periods? Fucking lame.

tampons or pad ll do me ok.

@xxSHhHxxBExxQUiETxx@xanga - I wasn’t calling people who use tampons/pads dumbasses, I am calling people who are afraid of their own vaginas/menstrual fluid dumbasses. Because they are.

DIVA CUP. definitely the most awesome invention in the world. they last years! you do have to get the hang of putting it in and out, but it’s a pretty quick learning curve. just like getting used to putting tampons in and taking them out… takes time.
i would HIGHLY recommend all women try a diva cup.
guest
never knew there was such a thing, i think id try it at least though
guest
I’ve never used the Instead cups (and don’t want to), but I do, however, use a DivaCup. It is kind of like the instead except it is re-usable, lasts for up to 10 years, and sits lower in the vagina. But don’t worry – it is completely comfortable and you don’t even feel it! I highly recommend it – I’ve never leaked with it (:
guest
That’s kind of gross I must admit. I have always used tampons and or pads if I have no tampons.
guest
I wish that the people who write these blogs or those that let them through would pay more attention to how many times the same topic has been brought up. This idea is not new. I’ve read probably 3 featured blogs on it in the last year alone. how boring.
guest
It sounds more comfortable than pads or tampons but it sounds more bloody. :S I always put tampons in crooked for some reason ( I suck D: ) and it’s painful. and when I wear pads they irritate my bikini line and make for bad razor burn. D: Perhaps if these things were cheap I’d get them. How much do they cost again and do they sell them at Walgreens?
guest
nope I’m good
guest
My mom has been using these for years, and this summer i ran out of tampons and she made me try one. At first i didnt like the idea, but now i love them, they definatly exceeded my expectations. It may be gross when you take it out, but its definatly worth it ? I couldnt feel anything, a few hours later i took it out and slipped another one back in.Tampons always start sliding out for me, and pads get all crumpled up and they smell wierd. With the cups you dont notice a thing. I honestly advise everyone to try it. Just dont sleep with it in, or your gonna be bleaching your sheets.
guest
I’ve had bad experiences with things going in my vagina that are supposed to make my life “easier”.
Such as nuvaring birth control. totally fucked up my vagina. I’ve been seeing a gyno for half a year now trying to sort it all out. needless to say I switched B/C right away.
A foreign object is not meant to rest in your vagina that long. This ringed picture reminds me of nuvaring.. which makes me want to say “no thanks”.
I mean– I’m all good with tampons. they are easy to put in, take out, dispose of. TSS is super rare. I mean really. unless you’re using super absorbency when you have a light flow, you’ll be fine.
Not to mention I think this “cup” contraption would be a lot more expensive than good ol tampons.
guest
@courtney_calamity@xanga - that was an ignorant thing to say.
I mean, think about our shit. are you gonna go around playing in that because it comes out of our bodies? or how about our piss? I’m sorry but yeah- I dont want to get bloody tissue-ey nasty stuff on my hands and that seems more of a risk factor for this cup contraption than for a tampon.
Just because something comes out of my body, doesn’t mean I’m going to love it. There’s a reason we excrete certain things from our bodies.
and about the environment, I’m pretty sure if all the women in the world switched to a cup rather than a tampon, it still wouldn’t save the planet from self destruction. but what do I know? I’m just a dumbass tampon user.
guest
I’m scared………
guest
I havne’t used pads since sometime in middle school, cause the odor was really bad, and people could pretty much tell I had one on…
Tampons have worked very well for me for over 13 years, so I am sticking to those…
guest
I only use Instead (I wouldn’t call them cups) when I want to have sex and I’m on my period. Otherwise, I use the DivaCup (you can also get the Mooncup). Been using it for the last few years and it’s awesome.
I just spent the whole damn day traveling and hanging around airports (yeah, yeah, first thing I did was check xanga). I’m glad I no longer deal with changing pads and tampons or worrying about leaks.
It’s more cost efficient, more convenient, and better for the environment. No, it’s not going to save the world, but you don’t shrug off the smaller changes and count on the bigger ones making a difference.
@LikeaMothToAFlame@xanga - I read her comment and the ellipses in her sentence throw you off (I read it the same way you did, but I know what she was getting at). She’s not saying to love what comes out of your body; she meant, “It’s your body, you should love it.” Separate from the part about stuff that comes out of your body. xP
guest
I use DivaCup ( http://www.divacup.com ) and l o v e it. Will never go back to tampons or pads. It lasts for about 15 years if you care for it properly and will not only save you $$, it’s good for the environment. Just sayin’.
guest
FIRST
first dude at least.
I am literally not allowed to have an opinion on the subject whatsoever lol.
that being said I must commend anyone willing to overcome there own prejudice, on what is icky or uncomfortable at first, to try something more environmentally friendly/ cost effective.
ps- I didnt read this because Im a perv, Im just trying to improve my sensitivity
guest
I’ve tried the instead cups, but I much prefer the Diva cup. They take a little getting used to, and inserting and removing may be bit uncomfortable (or slightly painful in some cases), but once you get the hang of it, I doubt you’ll look back.
I’ve used mine for a year and a half now, and love it. The best part is that you only have to replace it every 10 years. Talk about eco-friendly!

it’s funny they think tampons and pads are not gross it doesn’t matter whether you’re bleeding on a paper product or a cup
guest
yeah i can see why this idea never made it real far in stores, ive never seen anything like this but remember hearing about it. i dont think id use them, it just seems … wrong lol :/
guest
Huh. I really dislike the idea of a disposable cup, but they’ve been around for ages. Never got popular because people are entirely too squeamish and ashamed of their own bodies.
I used a diva cup for awhile. Works great, awesome, but some months it makes my cramping worse. I stick with cloth pads.
guest
I didn’t care for Instead. I tried it when it was put on the market years ago. msupsychmajor mentioned TSS. Their website stated women who have had TSS should not use Instead. Also women who have IUDS should not use it as the IUD could become dislodged. Also I don’t know if this product is made of latex or not. People allergic to latex might want to avoid them.
guest
Gah, it took me years to master the tampon and pad properly.. I am not switching shit up now!
guest
@Heartzmusick@xanga - I was handling reading the comments until I read that one.. ahhh I am so staying away from these now eeesh!

Best invention ever. I love it.
guest
i don’t see how a cup is any more gross than a pad that soaks everything up…. or a cotton tube that just sits inside you.
guest
I use the DivaCup sometimes, which is reusable. It’s really nice for swimming and stuff although it takes getting used to and had to use some pantiliners the first few times because I didn’t quite get the hang of it. Very healthy and convenient to ignore what’s going on “down there” for 12 hours.
My biggest problem with it is that you need to boil it for 20 minutes between periods to make sure nothing unpleasant grows on it while it’s out of use for a month (you wash it during your period). That’s fine if you don’t live with people, otherwise a little awkward to explain what you’ve got going on the stove.
orchid / 231 posts
I tried these a few years back. I did not like them (considering how I still have most of the box left -__-)
Pros:
1. Fewer worries about changing it on time because it lasts FOREVER
Cons:
1. Difficult to insert (try doing this dry…it blows! and it hurts)
2. Really strange to remove (shoving a finger in yourself and trying to hook at the right angle to pull it out? uuugh)
3. Messy to dispose of/clean up (you basically have to wrap this up a lot and it’s all bloody so it’s a huge pain)
4. You come out of the restroom with bloody, bloody fingers. How is that for awkward sink conversation with the person next to you >.< (if you have to change in a public place)
5. There is always the worry of not inserting it right and getting a huge mess in your pants.
All in all…I think I’ll stick to the tampon + pantiliner combo. It is what works for me the best ^^
guest
I have never heard of this before… and I still do not even know how this works – uhh… ?
guest
aren’t these te same thing as diva cups?
guest
These are supposedly a good alternative to period sex but uh… they fail. Husband complained about hitting the rim of it and it being very uncomfortable. Needles to say, him hitting the rim and then the rim hitting into me wasn’t great either. They are ok for just regular use but tampons and pads are just easier for me to deal with.
guest
Sadly my body denies tampons. I am allergic to most for some weird reason (talk about agony!) or they give me infections (agony x2!) so I stick to pads. I dont mind pads. But I have never heard of these cup thingamajigs!! They intrigue me and scare me at the same time. I like that they are said to be eco-friendly, which means its probably sensitive vagina friendly. YAY! But like tampons, most things just dont like being in there, which frightens me. I am afraid that germs would transfer from your hands to the cup and having germs in my jay-jay does not seem pleasant. Wouldn’t mind try one but I think I’ll stick to my mattress’.

@Wac0madness@xanga - the best way to describe it, looks like a diaphram. I did do some research and found that you could use an INSTEAD during sex. Of course I’m not saying you should, but hey it could happen.
hydrangea / 97 posts
@Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga - Nah it’s not painful, but if you don’t put it in, I suppose it could be. Like anything else, you just gotta be careful. It’s not for everybody.
hydrangea / 97 posts
@meeschoo@xanga - The same way you feel about it now is the same thing I said about INSTEAD. I kept thinking yuck, are you nutz? But upon trying them I was suprised to find that it was very comfortable to wear. All I can say, is hey don’t knock it til you try it.
hydrangea / 97 posts
@Angelina456@xanga - So its simple, you pinch the sides of the cup, and put it in as far as your hand will go. The cup will then form itself to your insides are designed. Its designed to be used during your cycle, however on more research I discovered you could use it as a diaphram during sex. Who knew?? lol
guest
@nubian_qween@xanga - Lmao. I looked it up online to find out more. I don’t think I would ever use it…
guest
I tried it.. I was pleasantly surprised. You can leave it in longer than a tampon, can hardly tell it’s there, and it really isn’t as messy as you’d expect.
guest
I’ve used something similar to this and it’s not really my thing I stick to just tampons. And I have to say these have been out for awhile.
guest
I love the Insteads, that’s what I use, when I can find them. I bought them once on a whim and love them. I mean, as long as you wash your hands when you’re done, it’s not too bad. They’re SO much better than pads and tampons.
Love.<3
