Have you ever been out shopping with your friends, and when they all squealed over a certain store and made a beeline for it, you trudged your feet, reluctantly hanging around while they tried on clothes you didn’t care for at all?
These are those stores for me.
Express – all of my friends go gaga for Express, but I haven’t shopped here for a good ten years. What used to be a cute boutique of fashion-forward basics now seems kind of…well…a boutique of somewhat trashy clubwear.
Macy’s – Wandering around department stores frustrates me. I don’t know why, but when I have to hunt out my own bargains, I get exhausted. Do I want perfume? Makeup? Clothes? Shoes? Jewelry? To really go through everything, it would take an entire day. And the one on 34th Street? I need a stiff drink to fight through those crowds!
Gap – yawn.
Costco – technically this isn’t a clothing store, but I have to put it on here because of my intense loathing for it. Sure, bulk warehouse retailers are the perfect place to go if you’re buying stuff for a huge family or your office, but for a lot of people, you end up spending more money by buying 20 of something you probably won’t use. Do you really need to buy a 3-year supply of Qtips at once? Here’s an interesting article on it.
So, do you like any of these stores, Lovelies? What stores do all your friends love that you can’t seem to get into?
daffodil / 1975 posts
Don’t like any of them either.

we buy things like toilet paper and fruit at sams club [ a lot like cosco] but the store i REALLY hate is hot topic. since when has goth become trendy?!?!?! i hate seeing little preppy chicks walk into hot topic looking for sh*t. [nothing against preppy chicks... just stay out of "goth" stores.. i stay out of the gap and sh*t.]
guest
i like gap for basics like tank tops and simple cardigans. my style is an eclectic mix of layered simple clothes, so gap kinda suits me in taht respect. i do think they should be a little less monotone though.
i usually buy things from esprit (and edc), killer loop, playlife, benetton, h&m and…well, obviously, gap.

I like the Gap, especially their jeans. I really dislike A&F and Coach though.

I AGREE WITH U!

@unluckyclover84@xanga - I’m not exactly a preppy chick, but my style of clothes does lean towards theirs (which is why I don’t walk in to hot topic lest accompanied by a scene/goth/emo friend, I got sick of the glares from people. wth, I don’t stare the goth chick down when she walks into forever 21, have some respect). I shop at hot topic because they have a lot of nostalgia items, like rugrats t-shirts, ninja turtles merchandise, and I’ll even buy a couple of band shirts. and you can’t really blame the shoppers, the store sold itself out a long time ago.
guest
I agree with you.
guest
@stardustskye@xanga - wasnt trying to blame the shoppers… got nothing against “preppy” people or any one else for that matter. and yes indeed the store sold out years ago when i first became “goth, or a freak…” [that was 12 years ago...] but i do get stared at when i go into the gap or abercrombie with my friends. i dont get helped, and when i walk up to the counter to buy something i get mad attitude from the staff….. so just because YOU dont give people like me the evil eye doesnt mean that other people dont.
guest
i don’t really shop at any of these stores
guest
i pretty much hate any store like Abercrombie, Aero, AE, etc. that has nothing but clothing with their name all over it. unoriginal… and i’m not a walking billboard.

totally agree! coach is one of the largest banes of the fashion world (plus they both use slave labor, awful!) @kinamorata@xanga -

I agree with everything but Costco. I’d also add AE, Hot Topic, and stuff like that (yes, I did just lump AE and Hot Topic together, it’s all about buying overpriced shit to be cool). But I love Costco. It’s my favorite store. Q-tips never go bad
.
guest
wow, ive never been to any of these.
except macys, but i go there only because it used to be a marshal fields. yes, i am one of those people from chicago.
guest
Agree with everything except Macy’s. I like hunting for good deals there. And I’ve found plenty of excellent deals that made it worth the while.
guest
agree.
guest
I love Express jeans, and I occasionally buy a few tops there, I really don’t like the clothes that you described as “trashy club wear” either. I usually just stay away from that side of the store. I like shopping the sale racks at Macy’s, because if I spend a little time digging I can find something I really like that fits well. Though I’m not that fond of the closest store’s layout, but I’m not about to drive out further to go to the one with the better layout.
guest
I don’t like any of those stores…. the only time I go into them is if someone else drags me.
My mom is always trying to tell me that the Gap is really cute and blah blah blah. But I think their clothes are incredibly over-priced and quite dull.
guest
@unluckyclover84@xanga - I agree with hot topic. American Eagle or Aeropostalel bought out the store and completely ruined it.
I use to buy the clothes to wear for nights out and clubbing and different things. I loved the baggy pants and everything with it. Now it just looks like shitty stuff that 12 year olds can wear or the preppy teens who want to fit in to everything.
I use to have 3 pairs of ORIGINAL hot topic pants and they lasted me for YEARS now if you buy anything from hot topic its worthless and rips or shreds in a month.
but i like the sister store to hot topic, torrid, at least there stuff is good even if it is for bigger people.
I also hate Walmart. I can NEVER find anything in Walmart. There stores are always a mess and i can never get service.
guest
I hate shopping period. But stick me in Best Buy and I’ll go NUTS. Electronics kick clothing BUTT. I love me some good Sony…
guest
@Islandgirl566@xanga - LOL. as soon as you said 12yearolds I thought of Twilight. ): such a shame.
guest
@hallentine@xanga - omg! i went to the premier of that and the girls had signs saying i love rob and all that jazz. I laughed at them and called them all morons. Then when rob did appear they all started screaming their heads off. I read twilight when it first came out and i talked about it to my friends who didnt seem interested in the book until the movie appeared. funny how that all works out.
Hannah Montana is the worst fad ever. Shes not a horrible singer but seriously, the people that are obsessed with her is crazy. Can’t even buy a tank without the miley brand being around it. >.<
guest
i like macy’s, but express always has a sale whenever i pass buy one, whats up with that?
guest
I don’t like Gap, J Crew, or Express either. Macy’s is alright sometimes, and Costco is a wholesale… so it’s supposed to sell stuff in bulk.
guest
Express? Trashy club wear? I beg to differ. Not all their stuff consists of that. Let’s not generalize. If all their stuff consists of “trashy club wear,” trust me, I wouldn’t be stepping foot in it.
And Express jeans are the only jeans that actually conform to my body shape and height without making me look trashy. Ironic.
I also think the kind of clothes they put out depend entirely on the season. I’ve seen some pretty classy stuff displayed at Express.
dahlia / 2012 posts
Of those, I only shop at Macy’s. I’m indifferent toward the others.
guest
I worked at Express for 4 years…yes there were some items that were trashy club wear, but most of their work clothes and Jeans are of high quality and have all lasted me a long time, there is no other store with average priced denim/pants that fits me like express does. I won’t deny that some of their newer lines aren’t that great, but I think current fashion trends are a bit of a fail for everyday life anyways for any store.
And I LOVE J. Crew, there are certain styles that you can’t really find else where, for a lesser price. I won’t lie I walk out of the store depressed, only because I can’t afford most of their clothing. =/
Macy’s I only go in for specific reasons…the mac store, or household items mainly, and if I have to buy baby clothes for presents than that. I usually don’t buy clothing from Macy’s though.
But I do agree on the rest of the stores…I always stop my mom from wasting money on a costco card…
guest
I don’t have that many stores to choose from. I like Macy’s. They have pants that fit me. I don’t really shop there though. Well, I don’t really stop in general.
I love costco though! Diapers and baby whipes in bulk? YES.
I hate: Abercrombie, American Eagle, Aeropostale, Coach, and a few other stores with ugly but expensive clothing.
I love: Metro, Romy, and boutique stores like the ones in Seattle.
I’m pretty sure no one else has a Metro though, It’s pretty much like a hot topic that hasn’t been sold out. You couldn’t POSSIBLY wear most of the clothes there with out being at least a little off. I go there to buy my super slutty gothic looking clothes. My halloween costume also came from there (compiled of regular clothing off the racks I might add), but I digress.
We have weird stores in my town.
guest
I LOVE J.CREW! It’s completely ME!! I like Express too, but I can’t always find wearable things there. I feel like their clothes are more for like Clubbing! haha
guest
j crew and express are too expensive for me, and their stuff isn’t all that wonderful…I only go to j crew when/if my brother sends me a gift card for christmas for there and even than it’s only $25 so I just end up with the argyle socks haha…macy’s and gap don’t interest me that much either and I prefer sam’s club to costco
magnolia / 1357 posts
I don’t mind Gap (you can get super cheap basics there, when they’re on sale).
I never go into A&F or AE or aeropostale … the sweaters I own from A&F, my mom has bought for me.
Express – blah.
Macy’s I kind of like, sometimes…
Costco – ugh, people, get over it.. what’s so great about it?
J. Crew – blah.
guest
haha. You’re description of Express, “a boutique of somewhat trashy clubwear” sounds like Forever21.
sunflower / 321 posts
You are my hero. I can’t stand a single store on that list<3
guest
@unluckyclover84@xanga - You should get used to that. What do you expect when you dress like people that are stereotyped as being unruly, depressed, “out there,” and rebellious?
When I dress like a skank to go to frat parties it’s not like I get all offended and shocked when guys treat me like a skank and try to get with me.
guest
Agreed. I used to love express and Marshall Fields. Gap was fine but now I hate their cloths. Forever 21 has decent cloths but you have to get deep into the store to find something nice.
guest
Meh… I really only go to the mall to get work clothes from hot topic and black light reactive nail polish from Claire’s. Other than that there are plenty of independent clothing stores around here that stock local designer wear and such for about the same price. If I’m looking for bargains I hit up good ol’ goodwill.
guest
I hate JCrew and Gap. So boring. Not enough attitude.
But I really like Express – they’re a little pricey, so I don’t go there often, but their items are quality. And I’ve found some really great brands at Macy’s!
magnolia / 1201 posts
I’m not a fan of J.Crew especially when they jacked their prices up. I occasionally go into Gap, I like Gap Body though. OMG how can you not love Costco?! hehe have so much fun at that store… where else can you buy jeans and a chicken dinner??
guest
I <3 JCrew.
guest
I love everything about J.Crew…..except the prices. I agree with you about all the others: The Gap is beyond boring, Express always has the same stuff, and Macy’s is just….lame. I’ve never been to Costco, but I don’t see the need for buying anything in that much bulk unless you have a gigantic family. In the long run, I don’t think it saves money.
Stores I hate include: Forever21, Hollister (my little sister used to shop there, and I didn’t get the whole concept…why is the store too dark to see the clothes?), Abercrombie, and Bebe.
daisy / 661 posts
i like macy’s, gap (sometimes), and costco
guest
I like Macy*s. Costco is perfect if you’re having a party.
It must be just around my area, but I always thought Express seemed more life office/ after office party time of clothing. I bought some nice pair of slacks from there, and even own a few dresses from Express as well. They look like as if I got them tailored.
I’m not really into Gap either. I still need to check out J-crew….so we’ll see.
guest
I personally have very little loss from shopping and using things from Costco. The problem is, most of the time, that people don’t know how to make full use of Costco merchandise, or buy a box of 36 of something when you only have a craving for one or two. Food wise, you just need to buy base ingredients and plan meals around those. I actually do about 80% of my food shopping at Costco, with about 5% waste ingredients at the end (which is insanely low); and I produce almost everything you find on Arenadi or CHOW@IReallyLikeFood from it.
Gap, Yawn agree. Macys, same. Express Men has nice trousers and nicely cut shirts for guys. I have a lot of shirts from them. And I’ve never been a fan of J.Crew.
guest
I hate A&F. Definitely top of my dislike list. My friends love that store, but I hate it. The fragrance are too strong and the music is sooooooo loud. On top of that, their clothes are expensive and do not worth the price!
sunflower / 264 posts
I love costco, what about buying meat or other food products there? That’s not sold in bulk.
guest
I like Gap and J. Crew… there is nothing wrong with streamlined, sleek classics. In my opinion, anyway. But I like Banana Republic better ^_^
I do not like Forever 21… rip offs and the quality is crap. Ew. I’d rather buy something more expensive and have it last.
guest
I’ve never been in any of these stores. I hate the Buckle.. too effing expensive.
guest
i disagree with your hate of costco. the food’s too good there. $1.50 for a hot dog + drink. c’mon now.
guest
In regards to express, it can be trashy clubwear, but with any piece of clothing, from anywhere, it’s all in the way you carry yourself.
If you carry yourself in a trashy way, even that argyle sweater from J. Crew can come off as trashy!
I dunno, just an opinion
guest
I’m going to just say, that I have to disagree with the opinion of Express.
Sure, it’s clubwear, but it’s not exactly trashy. It all depends on how the person wearing it carries themselves. I know people who can make those Argyle Sweaters from J. Crew look trashy!
Just an opinion.
guest
Gap is f*cking expensive. You can find their stuff in the clearance section of other stores.. A freaking tanktop is 20.. and you can get it for 4 dollars at say.. . papaya.. or wet seal.
guest
@HollowTendencies@xanga - Agree! They just put a Buckle into my mall…Only went in once for about 10 seconds, long enough to see the price on the closest t shirt..then left promptly.
Macys < Dillards.
I go to Dillards for EVERYTHINGGGG.
guest
I shop at Express, but only because they’re the only store around me (in my state) that has size 00 suits.
guest
@arenadi@xanga - my mom buys 85% of our meat from costco (other 15% is for Asian specialty cuts) and about 2% goes to waste and that’s only b/c my dad forgets to finish his lunch sometimes
I agree with the stores above other than costco, where else can you buy enough bananas at once for me to eat when I’m training or pmsing? a pack of wings at costco will only be enough for dinner + my dad’s lunch for the next day and we’re a family of 3 now – at no frills we need 2-3 packs…
would like to add, forever 21 (quality is so horrific), garage, sirens
guest
Those stores are really good for professional, sophisticated women. Whenever I need clothes to go to an interview or internship, I go to those places. I don’t know about you but what ever store there is I can always find something I like and will love.
guest
@JoeytheGenie@xanga - Awesome
That’s the way to do it!
The 20% non-Costco is usually Farmer’s Markets or Chinatown markets/ butchers/ noodle factories and what-not too. I can’t do without that stuff. Did you know Costco in Hawai’i carries a large variety of Asian foods/ cuts? Like, they carry the Jjim style Galbi and all.
You know how I see F21 and CR? Disposable clothing. It costs very little, and looks nice. Personally I’m a buy something and keep it forever (classics) guy, but with F21 and CR, it’s like… buy it, if you wear it a few times, you got the use out of it already — and by then it’s usually fallen apart anyway haha.
Poor quality, nice look, disposable. I guess it’s kind of like the equivalent of a fashion 3-night stand.
guest
LMAO, I totally agree with all of these. I also can’t stand Hot Topic.
guest
@my_horizon@xanga - i should have to get used to anything, people should have enough respect for each other to not treat each other like shit [or pieces of meat] based on what you are wearing.
guest
I like Express =/
Gap is BORING…And Macy’s is always such a big mess hahaha! Costco is okay; I just don’t like how they always sell the “original” flavors
J Crew is like old lady-ish to me
guest
You forgot Hot Topic.

I usually have fun whichever ones they wish to go to but it’s their company I like most !
daisy / 669 posts
haha. i totally agree with you, I used to like costco though. until I realized I am actually wasting $ because I never finish what i use…. except toilet paper! <3
guest
@unluckyclover84@xanga - My style changes depending on my mood, but it usually tends to be more “preppy” (as in I like classic pieces, not the A&F kind of preppy). Sometimes there are things I want that can only be bought at Hot Topic. I don’t really think what I wear says anything about me, but a few times the employees have made me feel uncomfortable. In my opinion, why should store employees care? They’re earning their money, and I’m sure we all have times where we have to/want to dress differently.
rose / 807 posts
Express Jeans fit me the best, never get saggy in the ass, last long –
I also love their cardboard box -15.00 sales!!! Clearance is wonderful too!
Perhaps it just fits me. Oh, their office wear is amazing. Landed me an internship.

I hate all of those places and I have to agree that they all suck. There isn’t even a Costco where I live, but I wouldn’t go there if there were. And the only reason I would go to Macy’s is for some terrible cheap perfume.
On the subject of perfume, I typically buy Guerlain, which is around $120 a bottle – not cheap, and it definitely smells expensive. It’s a French brand, which is why I have so much trouble finding any the designer at all, not to mention my particular scent. I like French brands, designers, and products, but what I’m looking for usually isn’t sold in these trashy Bloomingdale’s-wannabe stores in the mall, like what you’re talking about.
Because of problems like this I have basically given up on department stores. I
loathe everything they carry, and they usually don’t even have the things that I am looking for. If I want something I have to order it offline. The internet is my favorite store.
One place I do like though is Target. They have an amazing selection of music, not to mention clothes, handbags, and accessories. Jean Paul Gaultier for Target is coming out this weekend – a French designer who I’ve admired for a long time. Don’t waste your time at the mall. Just go to Target, people. It’s so much better.
guest
If there was a “like” button here, I’d click it. I hate all of those stores. Oh so much. There are a couple more that I’d love to add to that list. But that’s just my own opinion.
guest
sorry, but i’m in love with JCrew, their sophistication and elegance is endearing. the way they play with their clean style is spot on, and i can’t resist anything nautical.
also, costco is one of the most fun stores to run around in, right up there with places like ikea. sorry, it must be the kid in me.
then what do i hate? abercrombie, aeropostale, AE, hollister, juicy, victoria secret. sorry guys, i’m not a mindless clone without originality or personality. i am also not a human advertisement, i won’t wear your damn shirts with nothing but your damn logo on it. thanks, but no thanks, i’m not that cheap.
oh, and hot topic? don’t even get me started on that. i dig dark and i dig edgy, but i’m sorry, hot topic is neither, it’s just trashy.
guest
@dreamcatcherXD@xanga - I agree with (most) everything you just said — only thing I differ with is (aside from not liking any of the stores mentioned in the post) Hot Topic. But I don’t go out of my way and only shop there. I just buy corsets (depending on them) from that store and that’s about it.
guest
I agree with most of the stores on your list. Express is super expensive and I have never in my life ever bought anything from their. I also hate Abercrombie & Fitch for their super overpriced clothing that has basically no quality.
guest
@stardustskye@xanga - yea i hate walking into hot topic. they were just really rude and bitchy and wouldnt stop staring. i dont dress “goth/punk” or anything up to their standards, but they dont know my personality at ALL so they shouldnt dare judge me before they know me. they dont know shit! sorry for my little rant…lol
guest
i’ve never shopped at j.crew. too expensive. i can’t really wear anything from express: most of it is business shit and i wear a uniform to work. when macy’s has something decent, that’s usually expensive too. sometimes i like the gap, but again, too expensive. and i’ve never been to costco.
guest
the only reason i ever go to costco is to get my fix of peanut butter filled pretzels. they’re the only place that seems to have them

I don’t really shop at any of those stores, but I do shop at Sam’s Club, which is like Costco. I read the article, but I still think it’s worth it. Eventually, I will finish that really big bottle of shampoo or all those rolls of toilet paper. Plus they have good prices on diapers and baby wipes, which I also need a lot of for my baby. We don’t get a lot of time to shop, so the less we have to go and buy basic items, the better. That’s really the biggest perk for me.

I’ve been to Costco only a handful of times, but I actually love the place. Especially the little food court place they have outside.
I don’t go to Costco very much because I don’t have a membership, but when I went there with my friends, I was amazed at how much stuff you can buy in bulk. Yeah, I probably wouldn’t buy everything in bulk, like a pack of twenty steaks or something, but it’s still good.

1. Hollister-sells things for more than it’s worth
2. American Eagle-same as 2

“Have you ever been out shopping with your friends, and when they all
squealed over a certain store and made a beeline for it, you trudged
your feet, reluctantly hanging around while they tried on clothes you
didn’t care for at all?”
YES! All the time!
But then they’d probably think the same thing about my favorite stores too, so I don’t *drag* them anywhere. I go shopping on my own.
I prefer bookstores, and stationery boutiques (like Hallmark), and art stores…
Urban Outfitters is a good one, since it’s whimsical and have several other interesting products lol…
I get *really bored* when I have to go with friends to GAP (God, seriously, seriously. In my opinion, nothing else screams “no character” louder than GAP clothes.), American Eagle (well I like looking at their accessories, but I don’t buy at all.), Abercrombie & Fitch, and Holister…
Those stores don’t sell my type of clothes. It’s difficult to find “my type of clothes” in the mall. The mall generally is *so* boring…

Express is good because they have some of the only jeans that fit me well. I like their jeans. So shoot me.

I gotta say I like them all, express and gap for basics, J Crew sells just the kind of clothes I like, and you can get pretty good deals at macy’s, Costco has awesome food, and I buy my tampons there

I enjoy Macy’s & Costco, but I could do without the rest.
I could probably do without Macy’s as well, but I do like their clothing most of the time.
And I don’t like Costco for myself (there is no way I would need that much of anything, I’m only feeding myself), it is very useful for my Mom, especially when all 7 of us still lived at home.
I didn’t read the entire article about Costco, but I read some and it compares Costco & Sam’s Club to Walmart. While I agree that Costco may not be the greatest thing in the world, I would much rather give them my money than a place like Walmart.
guest
Out of your 5 I only go to Macy’s. Once in a blue moon I go to Costco but I really have no need to.
I don’t understand everyone’s obsession with H&M. I’ve never been in that store. I also don’t get Hollister. Hello? Can they turn the lights on in there?!
guest
i don’t like j crew that much
guest
Well uh..
*sits in a corner* I guess I can be the temporary voice for the P-size party. When I wasn’t so big, I shopped at Express. It was nice. They had decent stuff. Macy’s can be pretty open to big gals too. I like their stuff. I usually get it online, though. I don’t like big crowds, either. And sometimes they just put all the big girl stuff online anyway. I shop at Wal Mart for stuff sometimes. It’s affordable and of decent quality. I have shopped at Sam’s club for clothes. I got some nice home team stuff that wasn’t in bulk. I’ve bought socks and stuff from them too. As for the whole bulk argument, it lasts longer in my house. My dad is retired, gets a nice sum, but it’s still on a fixed income. We get the things we use a lot from there.
I actually like Old Navy. The Gap pretends I don’t exist. They stopped carrying plus size clothes a while ago. I bought a really ugly fuzzy orange shirt thing from them years ago in high school. I wore it three times before giving it to my dad to wipe his car down with. Never been to J Crew but somebody told me they do big sizes too. Well…size 16. :-/
Meh. I think what you’re saying is that the mainstream isn’t always great. Which is true. a lot of my fit friends feel the same way as you. They reach for brands that no one has ever heard of. They don’t shop where everyone else does. But they must be doing something right (or drugging you guys heavily, lol…) ’cause people shop there in droves…

i love Express jeans, they’re the only ones that really fit me. J Crew and Gap are too boring for me though…I only occasionally find something in Gap and J Crew reminds me of my mom. -.-
