BCBG Dress (Left) Frederick’s of Hollywood (Right)
So as I was browsing the web looking at dresses today, I happen to come to Frederick’s of Hollywood website. Like usual I simply skim through their pages since it’s never my taste of style. What surprised me was when I saw they had this dress that I seem to like. When I looked closer at the dress I remember it is the same exact dress I brought a couple months ago from BCBG.
You see, now I’m not talking about dresses with similar style, color or designs, but this one is exactly the same. At the moment I was pretty upset because I bought my dress for 2 to 3 times more, and now I see that they are only selling it for $49.99. I’ve purchased from Frederick’s before but ended up returning and paying a restocking fee because I did not like the quality. Above I showed the picture of the model wearing the dress in the website of Frederick’s – and the dress I bought several months ago from BCBG, just so you have an idea what I’m talking about.
How do you feel about fashion copycats or replicas? Should I be upset?
guest
i didnt know they made dresses. But thats the world of fashion a bunch of stolen ideas and designs. you should be upset that you probably paid more. but you paid for quality. And walk into any forever 21 and you find that half the store is a knockoff of some other brand
guest
You should be upset
I WOULD BE FURIOUS !! Same exact dress for 1/2 the price — and no one would even know that 1 is from BCBG and other one is from Fredrick

Did you look to see if they both used the same designer. If this is the case, it would not be ripping.

*clears throat*
Why does it matter? If it was a big deal, the companies will take it up in court.Until then, WHO CARES?
You bought the dress from one place, so why should it matter that another place has it?

HAHA you got pwnt. Don’t waste money on ugly dresses next time.
guest
even though the design is the same, BCBG’s dress might be made with much better material
guest
Well, you said you didn’t like the quality at Fredrick’s anyway, so what do you care? You wouldn’t have bought it at the cheaper price anyway.

if you wanna be upset then be upset :\

with stores like Frederick’s of Hollywood, often times they buy their stuff from suppliers who actually design and manufacture clothing/dresses, and just lap their own tag/label on for their stores. I am not sure if BCBG does that too, but this could just be a case of the supplier accidentally selling the same design to two different reseller.

We actually just went over this in my apparel analysis class. Our teacher told us that in the fashion industry because things change so much people don’t usually get copyrights on things because by the time they get all the paperwork done and cleared the style is out of style. Designers will hide their designs for as long as they can but the second its on the market its free game. Sounds to me like someone sold the design to the first company and then Fredric’s decided they liked it and either bought it from the designer or just made it themselves. Probably more information then you ever wanted to know but still fun. That really does suck for you that it was so much cheaper one place then the other, I know I would be upset. Its a good story though to show the importance of shopping around.

I think the only way I’d be pissed off about it is if I bought the more expensive dress first.

I actually do get really upset about these things, but not over price or quality or any of that. What really upsets me is that fashion is very much an art, and seeing people shamelessly rip off designs like this is just simply PLAGIARISM. There’s no two ways about it. Why should one designer work hard to express their styles and ideas just to have another person come along and steal the design, try to pass it off as their original idea? That’s just not okay, where’s the integrity?
In the end, I’d be perfectly happy to own the BCBG one instead, because that just feels more honest to me. [And besides, I think I get my money's worth when I buy BCBG, their quality really is worth the bucks.] Maybe no one else would know the difference, but wearing a copy, I’d feel terrible, it would really weigh on my conscience. But maybe that’s just my bias, I really have something against copycats, those filthy liars.

I can’t bash. I don’t know who had the dress first, or if they’re both using the same designer, or whatever else could have happened.
Nevertheless…
NEWS FLASH! Clothing stores copy each other ALL THE TIME. Who is to say that BCBG or whatever the other store is called didn’t rip it from someone else too? LOL
There’s a red and black striped dress that I’ve seen at Wetseal, Venus, Macy’s, and some other high end store. Shit happens.
guest
Maybe FOH bought the design?
guest
haha. Smaller designers always steal from top designers. It’s how it goes. But I guess I’ve never seen or heard of an EXACT rip.

@dreamcatcherXD@xanga - YES! THANKS! finally someone that understands how i feel, other than those comments up there saying it’s not a big deal! . i wasn’t bitching about the price because i’ll def. buy the BCBG one too. However, copies in general makes me sick. Especially when it comes to designer bags, when people carry the same ones (but fakes) it makes me feel not as special anymore since i’ve worked hard for my money to buy them!

Cute dress! I’m going to have to check it out.

not to mention – my boyfriend and i shopped for about 2 weeks to find the dress in a size small .. n it was sold out everywhere. I guess the other reason why i am mad is because we went through all the hard work for nothing. Searching for that ONE you love is something i would do for high fashion only, not whatever i can find.

I think it’s classless and tasteless. Ultimately though, it’s the company’s call to take it to court. Of course so blatantly copying everything, right down to the last color…lame. Fail.

@diannisforever@xanga - LOL i know! forever 21 does. but their quality is really bad also =( i stopped shopping there

I think if you did end up with the better quality dress than you shouldn’t be too upset. Honestly it doesn’t matter if something looks exactly the same but is cheaper, if it will fall apart, not fit right, or made of a horrible material it’s not worth the lower price.
It’s still awful though that they did directly copy the dress with little to no deviation. Of course like many others have said that’s more something for the companies to handle. I say just keep shooting for quality, and then you know your money is well spent.
guest
So you’re angry because people are going to think you got the cheaper version and didn’t pay the price from the more expensive brand because you won’t those that care to know you have money?
guest
why would you pay over $100 for that dress….

I’m surprised there’s no lawsuit for copying their design.
guest
I hate that. Places copy eachother all the time, but usually not that blatantly. It may be the pictures, but the BCBG LOOKS like better quality, so maybe you got lucky…
guest
this happens ALL the time… forever 21 steals a lot of designs from everyone ahaha
guest
Well that sucks. I’d rather buy the BCBG one, though. Brand whores FTW!
guest
If you love the dress and quality is good, don’t get too upset. Besides, you’ve had bad experience with Frederick’s clothing before so the odds of a new dress from there being low quality is high. Everyone is copying someone else, just look at the clothing at Forever 21! I’m cool with replicas/copies as long as the garment is well made and I’m not paying top dollar.
guest
Wow, everyone’s pretty harsh on here.. I think that really sucks, but as you say the cheaper dress is from the cheaper company, so you got your dress in good quality.
guest
@frozencherries@xanga - haha I agree
guest
Well, maybe they do that because not everyone has the cash to be going to BCBG.
Meh.

ewww that disgusts me that they did that… i hope BCBG sues them for a bit of money

I have that same dress!!

we (buyers at frederick’s) buy items from vendors who supply to more expensive (yet often actually cheaper quality) companies as well. FYI, the manufacturer we bought that dress from supplies to bcbg too, & it’s the same quality (same fabrication, etc). so yes, you did get ripped off. bcbg just made 2-3 times more money off of you.
guest
there’s one exactly like that, but instead of blue, it’s pink at this one store called Cali

Hmmm…many of today’s shoppers are gradually in the process of discovering that “hot off the shelf” is what the high-ticket pricing is based on…and that knockoffs have always – and will always – occur.
Knockoffs are not always of inferior material, either, I’m afraid…
Another minor note: once your “hot off the shelf” item has reached [increasingly faster] knockoff status, your item generally either gets relegated to the back shelf, quietly disposed of, sold on eBay for a drastically reduced price [to counter the knockoff price], given away for free, or donated to a thrift store – which sells the item at a further reduced price than the aforementioned online outlet.
In short – people have a long standing habit of purchasing items of immediately reduced value directly after the paid cost.
Shocking! I know!
Yet – time and time again – fashionistas get caught up in the craze, little understanding the actual value of their fashion purchases in terms of cost per wear.
Just wait another couple months…you’ll see its equivalent in Hot Topic, then in Marshalls, then in Target, then in Wal-Mart [IF it has any lasting aesthetic value]…with perhaps a dozen variations in the standard resale shops.
Come to think about it…I have a graphics dress of similar style in my wardrobe right now…just needs a couple of alterations – eliminating the sleeves, adjusting the neckline, placing straps in…
Nah. I’ll keep mine in the back of the closet for now…

copying a total different dress is just so unbelievable!
guest
I’d be a little upset too- but remember that anybody who buys from trashy and cheap Frederick’s of Hollywood is going to wear that once before it gets ratty and gross looking. Sigh, I hate when people rip-off of others. Do you know how many times Forever 21 has been sued for things like this?!
Plus, since you shop in BCBG, I believe that you’d probably wear the dress better and glam it up with great accessories better than the girl who buys the cheaper version from Frederick’s.Sorry, but Frederick’s of Hollywood is just…….. ew.
