While waiting for the Olympics closing ceremony to start, I was browsing channels when I saw that a Spanish-language television channel was having a show dedicated to Mexican-American singer Selena, who was murdered in 1995.
If you don’t know who she is, she was a rising star in the 1990′s. Her arguably most famous song is “Dreaming of You”. Her life was cut short when her fanclub president murdered her after a dispute over money.
Disney star Selena Gomez was named after Selena, and even covered her song “Biddi Biddi Bom Bom”

I love her. She had so much talent and charisma. It’s rather very unfortunate that her life ended tragically at the zenith of her career. I’m a fan of her music.

I wonder is she’d be as famous if she hadn’t gotten murdered. Regardless, I loved that movie & my niece is named after her too!

I love Selena. As a kid, my music world was practically destroyed when I found out that the lady I aspired to be like someday died :/ by a “friend” too…. Yeah, I still cry whenever I watch the movie. She had such a bright future ahead of her…
I can’t believe it’s been 15 years already

I believe she’s singing with the angels in heaven now…love her music…we miss you Selena

I LOOOOOOOVE HER!!! I listened to all her albums as a kid.
It’s so sad that her life was cut short.
On the Univision…or telefutura…they’re having a competition called “buscando la doble de selena” or “looking for Selena’s double.”

I don’t remember her death, cause that was the year I was born. But I watched that Selena movie in Spanish class, shes pretty cool(:

I loved Selena-I have all of albums on my ipod. I remember the day she was killed, it was so shocking. Selena is the only movie that I liked how Jennifer Lopez acted, she was very believable as her.
RIP Selena ;(

ahh, biri biri bam bam is always played at weddings, quinceañeras, parties, clubs, etc.
I think she could’ve been even more popular had she not been murdered…
It’s such a pity that she didn’t have the chance to accomplish her dreams.

Oh god, when she died, my family went crazy. (We’re latino, but not Mexican) It was so sad.
But as I read in a book, it’s best to die at your peak and remain a legend, than to have your stardom fade away with age.
@BellaGlam - Oh god, me too. I cry manly tears.

I love Selena Gomez ! and I never really knew Selena until I came to the USA but I’ve heard so many things about her. Rest in peace*

That was such a horrible thing to happen to a bright woman like her. It shouldn’t have happened……

she was amazing. she is from where i live. there is a monument of her downtown in corpus christi. we will always remember her. i always loved her music. i grew up in california and my dad is from corpus and so is she, so naturally he would play her music when i was a child and she was my favorite. i always cry when i watch her movie. its tragic. her music was an enormous part of my life. r.i.p selena. she was the queen of tejano.

I love her voice! She’s one of those singers whose I would listen to solely for her voice. I may not care for the melody, but her voice makes the song worth listening to. I remember when this happened, too. I was in high school – my sis and I had just discovered her and then she was gone. Very, very sad.

loved the movie and loveee that song

It was sad she was murdered. I’m a big fan of hers, I credit her music for keeping my Spanish from completely going south. It motivates me to keep speaking it (I dont have many people to talk to anymore). I remember watching Selena Vive! I cried a bit then too. Some of the people singing her songs didnt do well though. No one will top Selena anyway.
Is anyone doing something for Selena this year? I cant believe it’s been 15 years. It’s horrible we have to think “what might have been” instead of “what will be”.
guest
so sad. I remember hearing about when she died, but at 8 years old I didn’t really understand.
guest
The movie of her life was heart wrenching. She was taken too soon. I can’t believe it’s been so long.
guest
I seen this movie. I thought is was just a fictional account to capitalize on J-LO. I thought it was bullshit.
guest
@BellaGlam - Same! I did an audible aww when I seen the title of this post

I didnt know her but I loved some of her songs. “Dreaming of You” is one of my favs.

Beautiful woman. I was ten when she was murdered and my parents and I both loved her music. I still listen to her and I really think the movie was well made in respect to her and her family. Such optimism she had about life and love for her family.
guest
I love the sound of her voice. She was so talented and beautiful! It’s so sad that her life was cut short.
guest
I love Selena! I’ve done a few posts about her if you’re interested. Thanks for the memories!
