i thought the side sweep bangs would be the most annoying asian trend ever. at least, that’s how it is here in texas. guess i’m wrong?

oh btw, i find it so annoying when girls hate it when someone COMPLIMENTS them on being “cute”. maybe cause the term is played out all the time, but it’s like god, just take the compliment. maybe they’re not calling you hot/pretty/gorgeous/beautiful, cause ya not. 

I think bangs are perfect for some people. It doesn’t mean it looks nice on everyone. There’s plenty of options with or without bangs; bangs are super versatile. There are other countries that have lots of people with bangs.. -_-

LOL. you just basically dissed me. because i have bangs, but that’s okay… i don’t really care…cause ironically today someone mistakened me for another asian girl (side view wise)…and i guess it’s true…but then again…HOW different can you be? geezes…people basically assume all asians look similar anyway. and are mistakened for one another…so in all ways possible…it’s going to happen one way or another. and for my defense, i was thinking of growing my side bangs again, but that’s overused to.then again what hairstyle isn’t overused?

I do not hate bangs. I have bangs (granted, I’m not asian, either) I have bangs because I have a fairly large forehead and the bangs make it look smaller.
Honestly, I don’t mind seeing a lot of asians with bangs because the looks works very well on their faces. Although, I have to say, if your bangs are horribly blunt cut (with no texture whatsoever) and very thick, I might feel the need to take my scissors to your hair.

layered bangs are cute. puffy bangs like in those bad example pics are ugly. it depends on the person. I think dita von teese looks good with bangs because she has the overall look to make it work. I think people with a high forehead aren’t ideal for bangs. high foreheads don’t look good without bangs either

Well actually i don’t think asians have bangs because it’s a fashionable thing, i m asian and i think asians have bangs because we are raised having bangs and it is a perfectly normal thing to have. However it is growing in popularity that in hong kong/ japan many girls are now having mid-path or no bangs from western culture and this is what i am finding weird, although i m not at all against the change. I guess you have some misconception on hairstyle but i totally agree with your thoughts on the ‘cuteness’ trend going on with asians.

Really? Hating bangs is like hating layered or dyed hair. There’s nothing you can do about it. Honestly, what hairstyle isn’t overused?

i do agree most asian girls have ONE look and it follows whatever trend there is ~ but hey, i have longer than my face bangs (not even sure if its call bangs…if its thattt long!) so i guess not all asian are into cute, childish looking hair….and i mean their bangs are not like supermodel straight across bangs or anything edgy, they are…young-wanna be bangs ~ gross~!

The side sweep thing irks me more so than Asians with bangs. haha Why can’t Asians have bangs? The side sweeping deal blocks your vision and the girls only have one hand to do things because they have their other hand holding their hair back. I guess it works if you want to learn to be a lefty/righty… lol =p Eh.

some people NEED bangs. i have an enormous forehead and have sported sideswept bangs since 11th grade (i am now 23), and recently changed to straight-across bangs. i definitely look better with bangs than without due to the size of my forehead. and this “trend” doesn’t only exist in asians.

well.. we generally think that having bangs on the side can cover some parts of the face and make you look skinnier..
but eventually i found out.. people usually look skinnier when the have like pony tail or with their hair all tied up.. im pretty much over bangs now..

Bangs are good for those with wide or high brows. A lot of Asians have round faces or high brows (especially Mongolians, Nepalese, etc).

Bangs in Asians is a cultural thing. If you look at all the chinese kung fu movies or any other movies or dramas set in the old dynasty days, you see all these ladies in elaborate hairdos with bangs. Also check out the old Asian paintings in museums or art galleries.

I’ve sported the bangs as a child, and grew up to hate it, because all the other girls had long, centerparted fringes.

Later on in high school, I sported it every other year (due to some seriously bad haircuts) .. but I must say, I looked pretty good with bangs.

I’m sporting the sidebangs now since my forehead is huge.. and my face has grown wider over the years.

More like 9 out of 10 girls have them.

I used to be one of them, but then I realized we all looked the same! So I’m attempting to grow out my bangs out (I get this crazy urge to trim them every now and then).

I think I would blame American celebrities who have pulled off bangs so well, and remember that in many Asian countries there is much more pressure to conform than in some other countries.
Bangs, like any other “trend,” will go out of style and come back gain eventually because they DO flatter certain features! They will cycle in and out of style just like straight vs. curly and short vs. long hair, so just chill, lay back, and wait for it to end.

Bangs are everywhere are my school, which is like.. 50% Asian. A lot of the non-Asians have their hair in bangs. Some can actually work those bangs! But I know some friends who have bangs, and I personally think that it looks better on them when the bang get LONGER. As for me, I had bangs as a kid, and once about two years ago because I got myself a  very short hairstyle. Now I don’t plan to get bangs at all because it does not work well on my face.

Bangs are great for hiding a prominent forehead. Not trying to be snarky – I know people who wear bangs for the reason.

Trends are a big thing in Korea. It’s a sign that you’re fashion-forward, so people pay more attention to what’s in and what’s out. The Korean entertainment industry is very interesting for that reason. It pushes fashion and style, and everyone participates in the movement in a way that won’t be acceptable in the US because the guys will immediately be labeled ‘gay.’ I guess Lady GaGa makes up for it by putting on a one-woman show.

i have had bangs since i was a kid, my mom thinks i have a huge forehead. im 19 now and i’ll probably have bangs for the rest of my life. i dont really care if this is a trend or not because without bangs, my head looks REALLY big.

I’ve lived with and without bangs. I have bangs now and I’ve had them for the last few years…I like it better with bangs and I do think I look better that way. Frames my face more, I guess… I’d probably have a problem with it too if I’m ever only called cute now that I’m in my 20′s…but I suppose thankfully cute, beautiful, pretty, hot have all be used generously by those around me. Otherwise, I’m against that “cutesy girly” look many of my Asian counterparts subscribe to too.

I’ve had my bangs since… forever. Sometimes side swept, sometimes full on bangs. Side swept on the days where i wanna semi cover a lazy eye (ugh) and full bangs on the days when.. I just want them. I’m asian. And yeah, hellaaaa asian people have bangs but oh well. I used to think, blah great, I look like a fob, but I loveee bangs and am proud to be an asian with blangs so what the fuck ever.

It’s weird how the silliest things matter to some people. It’s just a hairstyle dude.

The way my hair grows, I have bangs. I’m growing them out so I don’t have to deal with them, or so that I can have that one loose sexy strand, but they are very annoying. I just have them until they get long enough for me to pin/barette back. They’re annoying-especially when kissing my boyfriend. Always have to take “breaks” to push them out of my face. Gosh I wish my hair would grow faster so that I could actually pin them back!

Sometimes bangs flatter people’s face’s.It depends on the cut and face shape on whether or not I hate them.

Fergie is just a bad example, period. Bangs are cute, and I have found Asians can pull them off more than most white people. However, they do get old for a fresh look, and there are too many botched cases floating around.

Tell me, what hairstyle do you usually go out with? Unless you’re doing some crazy artsy shit, most people probably have the same hairstyle as you do.

I completely agree with you! I’m Korean and I’ve noticed that girls from my country tend to copy whatever is ‘cool’ instead of trying something new. That’s where the bangs come in! It’s not only the bangs, but with almost every style. Once one thing is ‘cute’, then everyone wants to get it.
I also want to say that I’m sick and tired of all the ‘cuteness’ that Asian teens and women are trying to portray. I find it unattractive and childish, and that it shows that they’re still one step behind from  that full sense of maturity.

I understand where you are coming from about bangs being a trend mostly seen in Asian countries. However, some people can’t really change dramatic hairstyle because of their facial feature. For example, girls with a rather round and short face need some bangs over their forehead to soften the “big face” look. I know this for a fact because my face is shaped like that. Yes, some people may be extremely comfortable and wouldn’t mind showing their entire face, but in certain situations, bangs can help hide some flaws which may boost self-confidence. Overall, trend is annoying because numerous people jump on the bandwagon regardless of whether they fit it or not.

Personally, I think you have too much time in your hands, letting that stuff bother you. You’re supposed to be in Asia, there are a lot of things to do there, other than hating on others’ hairstyles.

The examples you gave were almost worst-case scenarios.

I have bangs and I think they are quite cute but I feel that girls in asia like to style it in an animation looking way.  I agree, there is a line between sexy full bangs and the bangs aligns with your eyebrows.  If you are not an anime character, don’t try it  

I think it’s true that your bangs should suit your face shape, and that some people look best with none at all.  But in the end, everyone is allowed to experiment.  I have been planning to get some feathery full bangs soon, and this article has not deterred me from doing so. (:

I have bangs, I have worn them straight down like that a few times but they end up flattening & right now they are too long. I just sweep mine to the side. I cut mine last year after trying to figure out if I should or not & I’m happy with my choice. If I don’t feel like having them down I either wear a headband or I pin them back into a little poof thing. I live in Japan (I’m American) & I do see a ton of women with bangs. I am 20 btw but I have rounder facial features & I think bangs compliment my face. A lot of people ask me if I am 15 years old but they do that regardless of my bangs so I may as well have them.

in asia, cute = beautiful. the implications of being called “cute” is better than being called it in america since it is associated with innocence and youth, both which are VERY important qualities there. (girls begin to use anti-aging products at age 20).

I want bangs.  A lot of people are getting them now, but I’ve had my eye on bangs for years… I just haven’t had the guts to get ‘em because they’re so different from anything I’ve done with my hair before.  I don’t want it to backfire!  We’ll see.  I don’t feel like the trend is so overdone or common over here that it’d be ridiculous to get bangs now, but we’ll see how I feel about it in a month or so…

I can take or leave bangs. I currently have straight-across bangs myself and like them. I don’t usually notice them on other people. But the thing that strikes me about this post is the line, “Take a walk in Asia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea… you name it, let me assure you…”  Ah, what?? Asia is the largest continent in the world. Has this writer walked down a large sampling of the streets in Asia? It’s weird to me how it’s ok for people to make sweeping generalizations about east Asians but not about most other nationalities. It really worries me to see that you are so worked up about something so insiginificant like a hairstyle on other people… Imagine if something REALLY and actually pissing did happen to you, you’d go ape#(%* on the worrrld.

i like bangs only when they’re like the first picture posted: kind of thin, not so straight across. but i prefer side swept bangs to no bangs at all.  it’s so dull to have a part right in the middle of your head, and a huge forehead.  you don’t have to get those atrocious bangs picture above, but something is better than nothing imo. 

You have to understand, some people have HUGE foreheads. I myself amd sporting a FIVE FINGER forehead and ever since I was little I have had bangs. Why? because it hides one of my number one insecurities
There’s nothing wrong with bangs, and there is ntohing wrong with being called cute when your 20. I for one am very jealous of the Asian race and I like to tell people that I am Blasian (Black and Asian), because
a) Asians are cute
b) I look like I’m part Korean

What I can’t stand is when I see hordes of Asian schoolgirls with the same straight-bang, bowlcut look. It’s horrific. And the bowlcut was something I happily discarded once I was old enough to tell my Mum to keep her hands off the scissors.

I’m not being racist, but just trying to give an example that people from different race group have certain style that they feel more comfortable with. I guess you pay so much attention to the Asian girl hair cut is because you are Asian, yet you want to distinguish yourself from them. Btw, I know a lot of Asian female, but I don’t see too much of them having hangs or fringe.    

I love bangs, I just got them recently.

They make my face and forehead look so much smaller, and they’re so convenient (not the monthly trimmings), but the fact that hair doesn’t sweep and cover my entire face.

Yes, some people can’t pull off the look with bangs. But they wouldn’t know unless they tried. Then so is everything else. If you don’t look good in it, why try it right? Why bother buy the bikini if you have a bakery hidden under the baggy clothes. The thing with hair is that you don’t know if it’ll look good on you until you tried. Chill out, it’s just a hairstyle, a hairstyle that looks really awesome on certain people. And as with all trends, some people do it the wrong way.

Sorry, I don’t normally comment on these things but this post is so unbelievably STUPID that I couldn’t help myself. Please, don’t waste time writing stuff like this. Really, its a style that make some people look great. I’m guessing you’re not one of them. 

Annoying isn’t so bad, you want to talk about the most evil Asian trend at the moment then try ‘lesbianism’, seemingly five out of ten (or more!) Asian girls you see walking around, or on the net, are going for it! That’s FAR worse!

Though they’re not my favourite, I don’t mind bangs, and in fact I like really well done bangs, and many Asian girls do them well!

I don’t have a fringe cos I think it’ll make me cute etc, my bf loves fringes and I think it looks for flattering on my long face so have had it for the most part of 8 years now (I’m 28!). I was thinking recently that I am getting too old for dyed hair/fringe but my frens say to keep it for now. I know i’ll be stuck in a rut within 2 years, help!!

I think it’s very ironic that your post complains about Asians with bangs, but your “bad” examples are pictures of Caucasian people, while your “Asian” example looks very pretty. Then again, it’s probably difficult to find Asians who look terrible with bangs, since they generally know how to style them.

For me, I think most girls look similar to each other within the same ethnicity (yes, that includes Asians and Caucasians). It doesn’t help that all hair styles are common, except for the ones Lady Gaga uses. Plus, judging from your profile picture, your hair style also looks like one that is extremely common (probably even more common than bangs). So, unless you have a very unique hair style, I don’t think you are in a position to diss about the commonality of another style.

Bangs can make a person look very sweet and approachable. I would love to have them, only that my natural hair would not allow me to have them unless I want to look like my hair has exploded (I am an Asian, but my hair is extremely curly to the point of frizziness). Really, try to appreciate your straight hair that can make bangs easy and possible. I would love to not have to spend 1-2 hours on my hair just to tame it.

One last thing. Some of my guy friends complain about girls who are offended at being called “cute”. “Cuteness” is what they really want in the girls they like, because they feel that these girls are more approachable, down-to-earth, friendly, and humble. However, because some girls don’t take those compliments nicely, they had stopped giving out compliments.
On the other hand, some of them don’t dare to tell another girl that she is ”pretty”, “beautiful”, “gorgeous”, or “hot”, because they had experiences that those girls would think the guy either want to 1) date them, or 2) have sex with them, when the poor guys only meant those words as a pure compliment.
As someone mentioned already, I think us girls should just take compliments with grace and appreciation, instead of complaining or over-thinking about them. If you want to complain about receiving compliments, then…well, you don’t deserve to be complimented. Period.

It’s not just an Asian trend. I go to a school with all different kinds of races and most of us remotely have the same hair style because hair is hair. It may be curly or wavy or straight but most people will have some sort of bangs. Causasians, african americans, asians, whomever.

I have a lighter side swept haircut and so do most people because we’re not little kids anymore and most people don’t like to split our hairs in the middle like our mamas did for us when we were kids. Separating your hair on to one side (rather than right in the middle) will produce “bangs” and it’s the easiest hairstyle to do and handle.True, it looks like Asians all look the same, but what can we really do with our front hairs? I don’t like to have nothing in my face, I’d look like I have a really big forehead.

I used to have bangs when I was little, then grew them out because I hated them. But then I got the side swept ones about a year ago and they’re fine. It’s all about preference to what a person likes.

I agree with you, I’m half asian, but i have/had side-swepped bangs and my boyfriend calls me “cute” constantly. Hardly ever pretty or beautiful, even though he thinks I am.

I’m not Asian, but I had bangs from the moment my hair became long enough at 2 until I was nearly 19. I’ve only tried growing them out since this summer because I looked significantly younger…but I seriously miss them!

Bangs are not limited to ‘just ASIANS’. I myself have bangs and I am a white girl living in the midwest. Almost all of my closest friends have bangs too, now that I think of it. It is just a trend, or hairstyle and I think it is ridiculous to get that riled up that all the AZNS are doing it.

I think bangs are cute. And not everybody has the same idea of beautiful and cute. I’ve never met anybody who was THIS worried about what other people were wearing their hair like whenever they left their home, though. :/

I don’t have bangs, but that’s mostly because they grew out and I don’t have the money to get my hair cut. I would do it myself, but I’m afraid of really messing it up and not being able to fix it right. :/ If there’s a way to screw something up, rest assured I will find it. -_-;

I’m EurASIAN, and have a side swept fringe.  It obviously works for my face because if it didn’t, when I had my hair done for a magazine photo shoot, the stylist would have sniped them right off.  While I agree that bangs don’t work on every face shape, I don’t really think it’s annoying.  What’s annoying is when Asian girls try to change their hair colour to a more ‘Caucasian’ shade.  Being a blond Asian is to me just a downright stupid thing.
At least cuteness is something Asian girls are after… and when you look at a Caucasian culture where the line between sexiness and sluttiness is always so blurry, isn’t it awesome that our Asian girls still feel that they don’t have to pull their asses and tits out just to be attractive?  At least it’s just bangs.  At least they still have an inner child rather than an inner slut!
I’m Eurasian, I’m part of both worlds and have experienced both worlds.  And considering that even in Asia, we have magazines depicting Western models in various states of undress, isn’t it frigging awesome that despite that, Asian girls feel those aren’t their role models and that the Western trend isn’t a trend for them??

yes, as an asian, i would say that cuteness is sadly very emphasized in our culture.
most of us have no boobs or butts, therefore what else do we have?
our cuteness!
however, that being said, i do not look good with bangs… and i feel that some of us (ahem*snsd*) go a little overboard with the “cuteness”, to the point where it is fake.
i always keep asking whether i should get side bangs or not and all of my friends say “NO!”.
it just doesn’t suit some of us (facial structure, etc.).
oh well.
