What do you think of this dress, Lovelies? For most of you, I’m guessing, “Eh, that’s erm … ugly.” I agree. I guess the dress isn’t so bad but most people can’t pull off this dress. Guess what? It costs $425.00!
Would you buy that dress for that much money? For celebrities and millionaires, that might not sound like much but for us middle-class shoppers, just for a hideous dress, that’s a lot! I could get about 2 or 3 decent dresses at Forever21 and maybe still have money left over. But why do people buy it? Just because Anna Sui designed it?

These flats are MiuMiu patent leather ballerina flats. They cost $450.00! There is nothing special about it. It’s just … yellow. Maybe they used real leather or something, but I can get the exact same pair for less. Or maybe find much more unique pairs of flats for about 20 bucks.
Why do people by these kind of things? Just because they have the money? For us, it sounds absolutely ridiculous! But to them, maybe its just a brand thing.
Do you buy things just because its a famous label or brand?

$450 for flats you could find at Goodwill? Nah…

HELL to the NO! This is exactly why fashion isn’t really my thing. AT ALL. This mess they call “fashion” Ew. My little black dress with cat throw-up all over it would look better. Eh. (by the way, my little black dress is just fine).

I’d totally wear the dress…but not for that much. I can find a similar dress from Mod Cloth for around $30-$50. Even yet, go to Salvation Army or Goodwill.
As for the shoes..I wouldn’t wear those for even $5. They would look too old for me to wear and plus they’re too plain for my liking.
sunflower / 287 posts
The whole idea behind designer is to use the money you have to be different. Yes you could probably find old ballet shoes and dye them or whatnot, but it just isn’t the same as the MiuMius. You could buy a brooch that looks like crap glued and varnished but it would be worth something because of the name, which is the entire point of designer.
I personally think that designer brands have become far too generic. I used to believe Armani and Gucci were quite high end, but they seem quite generic now. I’ll stick to my Bijan, Kiton, and Eton from now on. I believe I should write an entry about the designer/generic mindset.
guest
most of the time when you buy designer clothes you’re not paying for the actual piece, you’re paying for the name on the label. like jeans, i think it’s so ridiculous to buy expensive jeans. i buy cheap jeans at ross or forever 21 sales cause everyone’s jeans look the same anyway.. i’d rather put my money into shirts and jackets that i can’t get for $10.
guest
@Aaliyaan@xanga - do it!

I like that outfit! but for that price? No thank you
guest
the shoes and the dress would look cute together.
guest
The shoes are OK, and I kind of like the dress, but I wouldn’t pay $400+ for them.
sunflower / 260 posts
I’m all for buying clothes that are fashionable AND affordable. But I have a friend who’s really into designer clothing. The way he explains it is that it makes him feel important and rich. He doesn’t even care if the label is clearly visible to others, or if he could find the same look elsewhere if he looked hard enough. To him, it’s about how it makes him feel on the inside. I dunno, I think it’s a waste of his money, but that never really stops him from spending 200+ on a pair of shoes.
guest
Things are expensive because of how and what they are made of. You get what you pay for.
I have a pair of rock & republic jeans that were over $200 dollars. Most people get pissed when they find that out because they “could buy the same exact thing for $30 anywhere else”. However, I haven’t had to buy a new pair in 2 years, and they are still going strong. They haven’t faded or stretched out. They still look in perfect condition. That dress was hand designed and probably made of really nice materials, not churned out at some factory and made of cheap synthetics that will fall apart in weeks.

i made a post like this recently, and you’d be surprised how many people actually defended the pointlessly expensive stuff lol. People need to chill out and realize that even though looking good is important, its gross that people spend hundreds of dollars on suff you can get for $10 when some people cant even aford to feed themselves. good post.

Ack, just knowing that people spend this much money on things that aren’t even that special makes my head hurt!

Ha. I shop at wal-mart and target lol. I’m cheap. My favorite store is the thrift store and you can usually find high end clothes there too.
guest
I suppose given appearances aside, it’s usually more about the quality if you pay more. However, regardless of quality, designer items are still overpriced anyways.

that dress is YUCK.
dahlia / 2747 posts
miumiu flats are probably really comfy tho.
guest
MOST designer clothes are HIDIOUS and super expensive. i don’t buy into that shit,so what if you bought some $500 pair of shoes, they look like something from target.
guest
Just because fashion “isn’t your thing” or you aren’t very educated about the apparel industry doesn’t mean these garments are overpriced and unnecessary.
The differences between those Miu Miu flats / Anna Sui and the ones you can get elsewhere for 10 dollars are alot bigger than you think. Everything from the fabrics to construction to finish is different. It’s the difference between those flats lasting a few months to a few years. It affects the feel, the fit, etc.
Apparel is an investment just like any other luxury item.
guest
I like the dress, but its waaayyy too expensive! I could probably make that myself -.- And for the flats.. wow, seriously? Thats kinda really expensive, i could get a pair at payless and im ready to go, haha.
guest
blah blah blah same shit from target.
guest
No, I don’t buy things just because of the label.
That being said, I think the dress and shoes in the pics are cute; I’d wear them together, actually. But no, I wouldn’t pay that price for them.
guest
Hahaha no, it’s pointless

@Aaliyaan@xanga - I agree with you .. most of the “high-end” brands from some years ago have become the most common things now … like gucci, LV, coach (if it ever really was considered high-end) …. I just love YSL and Chanel, if I had the money, I’d buy as many pieces from the as possible
guest
I am definitely not a label whore. Honestly, I hate any kind of obvious labels on clothing. If it’s cute, I buy it – whether it be $3 or $300 (in all honestly, I have yet to buy anything over 300…maybe someday).

I can imagine a girl pulling off that dress, but it wouldn’t be anyone around my area. Those flats aren’t just yellow, but LOOK! They have holes for your toes to breathe easily! It obviously compensates for the price. *presses sarcasm button*
I can understand that some people would want to get something anyone can get, but pay more for a slightly different design, but the prices of those flats and that dress make me shudder to think anyone would pay so much for something they won’t wear everyday. (okay, flats maybe, but those are going to get scuffed quickly)
I don’t approve of people buying clothes just for brand name’s sake, but I won’t stop anyone from doing it. If a person feels the urge to spend a little (I mean a lot of) money for apparel and decides to buy it, then go for it. You can always spend your money on other, just as cute shoes and dresses and still have enough money to -actually- show off in front of people, but it’s your choice. I don’t even have to say some generic thing like donate your money to a good cause – I’m sure someone’s already said that before. (please do though)
guest
that dress and shoes looks like something katy perry would wear. I don’t buy things just because it was designed by a specific designer, mainly due to budget reasons and some designer styles aren’t that appealing. if I was very rich, it would be different as far as price goes since I don’t have to look at the price tag. I still wouldn’t buy ugly designer things, only the pretty designer things and some non-designer. anything that is pretty, I’ll buy
orchid / 190 posts
no way I love clearance and sale items the best and they are usually just as cute!
guest
DITTO!
ive seen ugly expensive clothes and it rages me. just because its a brand name, they expect ppl to buy it. arghs
guest
Personally, I do agree with insane prices but the whole “fashion” thing depends on everyone’s opinions. A small town girl isn’t going to know a thing about the fashion that a girl who lives in L.A. knows about, and she probably wouldn’t trade in her clothes for the “city girl’s” either. I think that fashion depends on where you live. In the city you can walk around in heels as casual shoes and most girls who grew up in a small town would get looks thrown at them. I grew up in the country, in a small town and I now live in a city. You can tell the difference in fashion so no one can really say it’s “ugly”(:
guest
maybe if it show that it is a certain brand and its orignal!
guest
That dress isn’t that bad… I wouldn’t wear it, but it’s part of this season’s trends! And I would totally get those shoes, if I had the money.
For me, the shoes situation goes like this: Payless brand slip-ons or Vans?
guest
That dress is actually really cute.
guest
I guess I’m just not the designer-buying type. Sure, I’ve had designer purses given to me as presents, but I don’t see anything particularly special about them. Some of my favorite purses have only been about $20 or $30. And no, they haven’t fallen apart, and they’re cute
Maybe some think that means I’m “unrefined” or something, but I’d rather spend more of my money on things that actually matter to me. Like books.
Haha. Nerd alert.

No. My belief is that, just because it’s a brand name doesn’t mean it’ll look good on you. You can find cheap stuff that flatters your figure and whatnot.
guest
The dress is kind of cute, but the shoes are bleh.
I don’t buy things for the label at all. I get what I like, which usually isn’t anything to do with labels.
guest
many low-end stuff are inconsistent in quality as they are mass-produced
the shoes with same design as another show inconsistent stitching
or poor cutting and seal it with glue, but not aligned to the shape of the shoe before drying
etc etc.
brand, material, craftsmanship, or simply the cost of hiring that designer, and where it is made in (ex. Italy, Belgium, France, Japan, China, Vietnam, USA aka Northern Mariana Islands)
a lot of high-end things are handcrafted, or machine molded but hand-polished and installed;
even the packaging is of higher quality
(ex. geniune leather wrapped glasses case with brand imprinted vs generic plastic case shared among several other brands)
it’s understandable and the price is often justified for me
(not that i will spend that much but i can definitely see the market for them)
miu miu flats? chanel flipflops in plastic cost more =]
since my budget is extremely small
i usually just get less than 5 or so new clothing/shoes/accessories per year haha
but wont hesitate to spend a lot on each if the design is fresh
i dont like to bash high-end brands for selling “plain” or “ugly” things
because what styles you see in low-end brands stuff are what used to be from high-end brands~~
as that chinese saying go: think about where it came from (the source) as you consume it~
guest
haha
sometimes expensive isnt always pretty:)i totally agree with u
guest
Certain designer designs are ugly. Yes. But the quality of the clothes is usually much better than the cheap knock offs. The material for one, the way it tailored fits to a woman’s body, and the way it’s made are different than what you’ll find at FOREVER21. Do I think it’s WORTH the prices they charge? No, I agree you are paying for the name. But I don’t think you can go and say you can find the exact same quality for a cheaper price at Payless or Target.
guest
Erm… I like the dress. And I like the shoes. (hangs head) I wouldn’t pay all that money for them though. you could probably get something very similar at a thrift store.
daffodil / 1622 posts
i wear them but the price is just lame!
guest
To answer the question no I don’t go by labels or brands I go by what l think looks good on me
.
guest
Personal opinion. Some people like things that look like that. Also, designer clothing is well known for it’s quality. If you take proper care of it, it will last for years.
guest
For $425.00 you could find a local seamstress and have several dresses custom made and tailored for you. You’d even get to pick the fabrics yourself!
I took sewing lessons once from a woman who did a lot of bridesmaid and prom dresses. They looked as good or better than anything on the shelf and definitely fitted better.
guest
Give me Goodwill every this stuff any day of the week! It’s ridiculous what some people will pay just for a name tag.
guest
I have wondered about this too. Stupid luis vuitton, for instance… brown with brown bags, way too overpriced, how do so many people have this stuff?
guest
that dress would look cute with those shoes XD
guest
That dress is ugly, but the shoes aren’t so bad.
@badluckforever@xanga - Exactly. I would rather spend $150+ for one pair of well-constructed jeans than cheap (price and quality), ill-fitting ones.
guest
AGREE 1000% with this post.
I find the ugliest AND SIMPLEST shirts are the most expensive stores.
No thanks.
guest
the dress is deff ugly but those flats for 450? no thanks
guest
WTF?
rose / 781 posts
The dress and the flats are okay, but NO WAY would I ever pay that much for a dress or a pair of flats. Stupid.
guest
actually some designer stuff can surprise you. even when at first you go “ew” then when you try it on you go “oh, its actually cut pretty nice.” but on first glance that dress is kinda ew, i need to see it on someone tho.
guest
I actually really like that dress. Although I do agree, $425 is way too much for it.
But other people do make a very good point, typically you get what you pay for. So if you’re paying $425 it’s probably much better quality. But my sense of style changes so often that it’s not a good investment for me because in a few years, I probably wouldn’t like it anymore. xD
