I’m African-American (a medium brown color) and my arm-pits are BLACK! At first, I thought that maybe I wasn’t shaving correctly, and then, I realized that it’s not hair that makes it dark.
I scrub them all the time (because I’m sort of a clean freak) but the skin around them just turns red. I think they’re dark because of some antibiotics I was on when I was younger, but I’m not sure.
How do I fix this? Does anyone else have this same problem?

ive read that rubbing a lemon on it can make it lighter?

…who looks at armpits anyway? Unless there’s hair sticking out of them, which you are obviously taking care of.

mine get that way when my skin becomes irritated. If your skin turns red from you scrubbing it, you are irritating it. Look into the deodorant and soap you use. The can be irritating your skin. Switch to something for sensitive skin. Also keep your skin under there well moisturized. It would take a few weeks to see results. Longer if the discoloration is bad.
Before you try using things to fade the discoloration I would make sure it isn’t from your skin being sensitive. Then you can try fade creams and other products by Ambi to get your skin under your arms to have a more even tone. Just be careful, if it is from senstive skin, the fade cream and stuff will only make it worse.

you should try waxing them. It’s a bit painful, but it leaves the skin pretty smooth, and for a longer amount of time.
The more you wax, the lighter your hair growth will become over a couple of years.

There’s a chance it could be acanthosis nigricans… I wouldn’t advise making a doctor’s appointment purely to look at your pits, but you should mention it next time you’re there.

my armpits got fucked up when I had a bad allergic reaction to deodorant. it’s been a year and they’re still this way. I’m seriously thinking of bleaching.

I second the lemon juice, although it might be a little harsh after shaving.

Lotion. I started to apply lotion after showering and my skin improved.

If you have candida overgrowth, you get rashes especially in areas than can be damp such as the armpits, pubic area, feet, or between your breasts

I have the saaaame problem, only I’m really white so it looks grey haha. My mom teases me in the summer if she sees it and she tells everybody I have hairy armpits.
People say it’s not noticable, but I notice it on people all the time haha xD
but to be honest, people don’t care. Usually people look at it, notice it, and get over it without even thinking like “ewe ” or “haha” or anything. It’s more normal than having hair on your knuckles lol.

I was told (I am brown skinned) that shaving aggravates dark armpits. I have noticed that when I wax my pits don’t look dark at all, whereas if I shave for a while they start to grow dark stains. So maybe try waxing if lemon juice or skin bleachers don’t work? Some spas do glycolic peels that supposedly deal with this issue too, which you are meant to get between waxings.

i got that only because i used veet hair remover and it burned my skin, now its almost gone cuz i use dove deodorant especially the one that improves your armpits yeee! BUt alot of women in the black community have this

i think my armpits are a darker shade than the rest of my skin, i was told this was normal??

smeagol has dark armpits.

maybe the brush that you use to scrub is too abrasive and irritates the skin and turns a darker color. I don’t know how to deal with it. I rarely wear sleeveless shirts. that is a solution I think.

@need_more_thinspiration@xanga - it is lol
just som people hate it and they’re self conscious. It’s actually uncommon to not have dark underarms lol.

My sister’s are the same as yours. Hers are extremely dark, not even “grey” as someone mentioned above, but almost dark brown/black. Hers started as an allergic reaction to a new deodorant.
She now has stopped using it but they’re still dark. She said over time, not using any deodorant (to keep the skin free of any product) and only shaving with very mild dove soap, it lightened somewhat, but it’s still dark.
Hope it works out for you.

That’s normal. Not only that, but scrubbing and constant shaving will make them darker. I read that on a site when I was wondering how to make my armpits lighter too. Shave only when you plan on wearing something that will show them off; for example, during the winters where you’re wearing coats and sweaters, don’t shave. And don’t overscrub when showering either. That will just irritate your skin.

It’s very common. There’s just more melanin in that area than there is in other places. It also tends to show in your knees. You could use a combination of things, personally for my knees and armpits I love using papaya soap and then using Witchhazel as a toner. Using liquid deodorants (although I know are awful!) also helps reduce the appearance of dark spots. It’s weird! But it works.

i’m east indian and its a problem faced by almost all indian women however i’ve noticed that losing weight especially over the arm area helps to reduce the pigmentation at the armpits:) they stop forming creases with the bulges however if you think its not maybe because of the size always keep the area clean and try to stop sweating as much as possible..sweating can also lead to the bacteria at that area to become active and again cause pigmentation

Did you have pityriasis rosea as a child? It could be scarring.
And really now, it’s just your armpits – unless you walk around with your arms over your head all the time, no one will notice. I know I wouldn’t.
