Yet, how do regular middle class women obtain their bags? (Note: Here I’m thinking mainly college student or someone recently starting out in the workforce.)
I’ve been curious about this because I see all these women with numerous designer bags. For the record, I only have a small Coach wristlet. Louies, Burberry, Gucci, etc are out of my price range.
After asking around, these are the responses I received:
1. Buy it with a credit card
My friend put her $800 Louie Vuitton Speedy bag on her credit card. Even though it comes out to a bit more with interest, it did eventually get paid off.
2. Get then as Gifts.
I knew a girl who had numerous Coach, Dooney and Burke, and Prada bags. She said she’d never “personally spend money on something so expensive”.
3. Save Up For Them
My friend saved $900 she earned waitress and bought herself a Gucci bag
4. Go to the Outlets
(This one is mainly for Coach) There are numerous Coach outlets around, and older bags or different models can be bought for cheaper.
How do you get your designer bags?
guest
You can always get them on ebay
and because you’re buying it from ebay you KNOW its not a knock off because selling knock offs on ebay is TOTALLY ILLEGAL!!
guest
i dont get designer bags, because it is unneccesary and most of them are ugly anyway.
guest
but i think some people still sell fake on eBay… got to be really careful buying them online…!

I don’t go with that kind of designer, I prefer the skateboard brand stuff. I usually buy mine on sale.

I only buy classic designs that are out of season or vintage. I would never spend more than $300 on a purse.
guest
I got my coach bag at a coach outlet. It was like 100 dollars, and they even had ones cheaper than that. Great place to go.

Most designer bags are ugly. Juicy couture is cute.
LV and Coach are ugly as crap.

Honestly a lot of people walking around with designer bags I’d say a good 80 – 90% of them are fakes. (at least around here they are!)
Either they don’t care or are really dense!.
I have lots of bags from all different price ranges, but i only buy an expensive one if its ridiculousy marked down.
I STRONGLY do not believe in knockoffs. For many reasons that i wont go into deatil with.

I don’t really like designer bags, honestly. :/

you can go to flea markets or vintage stores.
I’ve found some pretty cool (real) designer bags there for $15, just because some better-paid woman didn’t want her f/w ’78 gucci bag

i get them as gifts. my gramma always has a bunch that she uses for a week then gives them to me.

it’s spelled Louis Vuitton.

I usually like to wait until things like my birthday and Christmas so I have money to buy them, or I ask for specific bags. I spend a lot of time at the Nordstrom Rack, they usually have a great selection of bags cheaper than normal. And of course I stalk things online until they go on sale! My mom has bought a couple of legitimate bags on ebay as well. Then there is also the occasional splurge :]
guest
so dumb. why would anyone spend that much money on a bag for themself? so selfish. so selfish.
guest
I have an old black (faux leather)hangbag I bought at Kmart for $10 about 15 years ago.
I carry it with me all the time and it is still holding up.
I could never understand why someone would spend a fortune on something like a purse.
guest
I don’t care about designer stuff except for a specific perfume I really want to get.

I just get nice looking purses from places like Ross, TJ Maxx, Chinatown, and outlet stores. How important is a designer bag anyway? When I think about blowing 800 on a purse, I just think how that same amount could let me take a mini vacation.
guest
oh and people who say you are “selfish” and stupid for wanting to have nice things are stupid.
live every day like its your last.
in my house we drink champagne whenever we can, because we can afford to drink it.
we get our cheese from harrods whenever we can because well, we can

@not3000@xanga - really? the flea markets around me are all chinese immigrants selling cheaply made knockoffs out of transbags piled up on folding tables. You rummage through the pile, barter them down, and then pay in cash. once a month, the police will come by and take all the bags away and make an arrest or two. it’s how about everyone in town gets their “designer” purses. i’ve never heard of real bags at a flea market! maybe your flea market is classier than ours haha
that’s how i would get mine …bc i have better and more important things to pay for. and because nobody i know is rich enough to buy that for me, even if i wanted it. i just think designer stuff is stupid. i dont see the point.
if i want a bag i usually just buy it at forever 21
sunflower / 257 posts
I don’t really buy designer bags or knockoffs. I buy no-name brands that are still cute but much cheaper price.
That and I sometimes get my aunt’s hand-me-down Burberry bags when she gets new ones.
I kinda like Guess purse and they’re in my price-range.
and yes, being in University I can’t afford anything more than the basic needs and a few clothing item here and there xD
guest
I buy them when I have some extra money =]
guest
One great way to get them is on eBay. You’d be surprised at the great quality (and significantly lower prices) of a lot of pre-owned ones, and the NWT bags are also a lot cheaper than buying direct. I recently bought a retired Vera Bradley brown microfiber pleated tote pre-owned at half the original price, and after very close examination, it was spotless and had no other signs of wear or use. I was quite pleased with my purchase.
guest
I’m not into designer bags. Such a waste of money.

I get my men to buy them. Yep, I said it.

There’s not many designer purses I like. I think they’re relatively pointless when I got a fabulous black purse from Charlotte Russe for $20 and I’ve gotten tons of compliments on it, while my friend bought a Coach purse and has of yet to receive any compliments on it. Though admittedly, if I were fabulously wealthy I probably wouldn’t mind dropping the money just because I could.

most designer bags have nothing special about them except for whoever the designer is. and i’d never pay that much money to be nothing more than a walking advertisement for someone.
guest
i dont use designer bags. i love and only use my UO oversize tote.

China Town…always china town
guest
@starsofplastic@xanga - Haha I totally agree. The only ones I even come close to liking are Nine West and Kathy Van Zeeland, but they’re a tad more affordable.
guest
@wating_4_u@xanga - Not necessarily selfish. I mean, if you earned the money, if you saved it, why not, right?
My problem is I would only buy an expensive designer bag if it was made from good leather that would last me for a few years. I can’t believe some people actually buy those bags at Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe. They’re very cheaply made, I’ve never had one that lasted me through a whole semester, let alone a year, without starting to look worn and frayed. When I see them, I tend to assume the person wearing the bag is still in high school. :/
I don’t really get why people are hating on designer bags, other than the obviously tired LV monogrammed bags and others similarly stamping their logos all over everything they make. Other than those, I’ve seen a lot of really pretty designer bags… that I could never afford. I would say that I’d consider quality first over considering the designer, or even the price. (And leather is just my preference because I tend to really put a lot of wear on my bags and leather is really the only material that can stand up to it, ha.)
guest
I don’t. I have more important things to spend my money on. Like rent, bills, and loans. For my extra cash, I save it for emergencies, not for a bag to put stuff in. That is the smarter thing to do.
guest
I buy them. Mostly on credit card than I pay back ha ha
I love my designer bags!
guest
I got a Coach wristlet from my ex. That’s the only “designer” thing I have, really. I love my Harajuku Lovers purses

I’m kind of surprised by how many people don’t like designer bags.
But at the same time, I’m not because there ARE prints that are over done, rather it be by the actual designer or fake or otherwise duplicated and copied after.
As for my circle of people, we do everything. And everything, I mean, knock-offs and designer as well as American Eagle or other such places. But I do have to say that if it’s cheaply made, then just about everyone will know. We only go to QUALITY purses, regardless of who makes it.
As for me, yes, I have a Coach purse with the “C” all over it. But the bag itself is in a style that will never go out of style and I’ll always have it. I’m not going to ask for a designer bag again. Ever. (I got it a Christmas present.) I wasn’t asking for one. But when my mom and I went to the Coach Outlet store, they were having a sale and I got a purce that was already a decent price. It was like, $110, including the sale AND tax. And from where I live, I have some of the highest taxes in the country and the Coach Outlet is over state lines. The coach purse was actually worth it’s price threefold.
And the reason why I would never ask for another one is mainly because I don’t expect it from people. I only need the one. And if anyone still thinks I’m selfish for having one, then it’s not about me or my designer bag.
guest
I don’t buy designer bags and I don’t think I ever would, either. they’re ridiculously priced and don’t even look that great.
guest
I buy them, and hope I will have enough money left at the end of the month for food..
guest
@smallandprettyplease@xanga - you know, when you say that you buy such expensive things because you’re trying to “live every day like it’s your last”, it made me hope for you that you would do much more on the last day of your life rather than go spend money on useless things. that’s all.

major holiday gifts [ christmas ]
saving my own damn money or helping to chip in to buy it
buying a extremly close knock off at a flea market (got a coach purse that i paid 45 dollars for and in the )
major sales (coach had some 50% off and then another 10% if you donated a $1 to Breast Cancer research, and then my mom had a booklet with another 15% off of the total price)
second hand shops: plato’s closet: i’ve gotten a burberry bookbag, a dooney and burke bag, i’ve gotten a huge set of vera bradley accesories and countless other things.
Ebay: i got my juicy bag after doing countless hours of research on how to spot a fake and finally chosing a real one. and btw, people DO sell fake bags on ebay, do your research people and sometimes the saying “you get what you pay for” comes into play
Any anyway, most designer bags I see I automatically count them as knock off (espically when they are so painfully obvious they are fake) unless I know the person and they tell me it is real/ or I know what kidna shit they buy. Every Channel bag I see: FAKE because no WAY could someone have a real one, if they do, they need to probably think about donating the money they spend on a bag that they will only use for a little bit to a charity fund or something. I’m all for designer things, its your money, but if you spend ridicoulous amounts of money on materalistic things, maybe you should think about where else you can spend your money (good karma comes around)
also, i don’t own many designer bags, but i always keep this small tidbit of info: “having a designer bag doesn’t make you better or smarter or prettier than the person next to you. don’t let your possessions posse you. you can’t take your prada/fendi/coach/juciy/lv/burberry bag to the grave”
guest
fake it til you make it!
i don’t like louis vuitton though, i prefer coach and dooney and bourke.

Thank you, Mom&Dad

I don’t. I would have SO much internal conflict spending $900.. on a bag.

it is kind of embarrassing to carry around because some people have the fake ones, so it cheapens the brand.

I don’t because they are ugly and overpriced, and I couldn’t live with myself for having a monstrously expensive bag while people in the world are starving.
But hey, that’s just me I guess.

I’ve gotten a gucci (’78), a prada (03-04, I believe), and a dooney&bourke (no idea) there
and of course, the no-namers for like 3 or 4 dollars (:

My mom bought me two designer bags, but the rest I purchased with my own money.
After spending so much and having them go out of style so quickly, I do not think I’d buy any more Coach bags. I have too many and with the money that was spent on them, I could have gotten something more classic like Louis Vuitton or Burberry. Those would have lasted me way longer and would definitely never go out of style.

Although I personally don’t care what “name” is on my purse, I can never stop myself from buying the perfect purse. I actually just ordered one costing $200, which to me is quite a lot but it’s nothing compared with LV or prada, etc. It’s just a high quality, beautiful, italian leather purse.
Other than that I have some coach and kate spade purses from outlet stores, nothing too fancy though.

Outlets. Street vendors in NYC. Gifts from other people.
I don’t own any designer bags, but if I did, then that’s definitely how I got them.
guest
Definatley save up for them. No one I know is rich or nice enough to buy me it as a gift, I’m scared SHITLESS of credit cards (and I don’t think I can have one anyways at 16) and all the outlets are still way overpriced (why pay 500$ for a bag when you can have an equally cute one without the logo for just 75$?? I’m just saying!)
guest
@wating_4_u@xanga - if a person is able to afford nice things, is she selfish for buying that which is within her means?

I save up and buy them at the outlets. But it’s rare. I buy them for function more than fashion so I’ll stick to the black and dark brown bags. The closest Coach outlet store is a mere 37 miles from home!

sales at most of the upscale places happen about 2x a year or so — i always end up buying my purses on sale. may and november — usually!

@starsofplastic@xanga - Hear hear!
(And P.S. I’ve never spent more than 20 dollars on a bag. I get tired of one in a few months, you throw your junk in them, they get pen marks, dirty, stuffed with receipts and stuff, and I have found that 20 dollars bags do this equally as well as 900 dollar ones!)
guest
I’m not sure I’ve ever bought them myself either. My boyfriend and mother are the ones that have bought them. Sometimes I buy them out right through the websites.
