Whenever there’s a debate brought up about Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears or Lady Gaga (mainly concerning their wardrobe on stage), there’s quite a bit of feedback about how they dress really slutty and wear things that are much too revealing for their shows.
At first, I didn’t think much of it because people have their opinions and what not.
But then I really thought about it and notice that pop stars seem to always get the most negative attention for what they wear on stage. Why?
I thought maybe it’s because these stars in particular – are performers, show-women. They don’t only sing but they actually dance and move around quite a bit on stage.
In my past experience of going to shows (which mainly consisted of rock music), these musicians pretty much just stand around and play their instruments. The most moving a rock and roller would do is jump up and down frantically and bob their heads wildly. You don’t hear about anyone calling Hayley Williams (from Paramore) a slut or Taylor Swift and all the other country female singers sluts. They all basically cover themselves up for their shows but I believe it mainly has to do with the fact that they don’t intend on doing crazy dance moves like Lady Gaga and such do.
Just think about the wardrobe pop stars wear for their shows. Britney, Lady Gaga, and even Madonna. They are all about the same tightness and length. Isn’t this the point? You don’t see them walking out and about wearing the same similar clothing they wear in their shows. Granted, Britney has her moments in the past and Lady Gaga..well…she’s just outrageously unusual but it’s not like she wears a leotard when she’s out getting Starbucks, right?
What’s your take on this? Do you think pop stars have a legitimate reason for the tight and skimpy clothes they wear on stage? Or do you think there’s nothing stopping them from just wearing simple jeans and a tee?

Miley looks like a pole dancer in that photo – definitely negating the point of the post.

no, i’m pretty sure gaga gets her coffee pants-less.

Singers do not have a “reason” other than the fact they don’t care if they look like trash, sluts, whatever. You can look cute without dressing like that, IMO. And yeah, Miley looked like a pole dancer when she performed.
vote for me, please

Yeah, fans would love them just the same if they dressed more appropriately.

women singers slutting it up on stage is nothing new. and not all of them do it, kelly clarkson isnt really a hoe, but shes like ..”pop music”, right? ive never seen her in like a britney spears get up
depends on the singer, how desperate they are for attention, or who they listen to.
oh and alos spice girls, definaltley wore skimpy things, but they were like costume type things, so its not really “wardrobe” persay, more of a costume someone out there thought would be a good idea..
i guess i dont thin its ok, not like i would do it, but whatever they want is whatever they want.

Ugh. I hate it when they twist my post around. This just makes this whole article look completely idiotic. >.<

@how_x_loverly@xanga - it’s alright. this isn’t the first time they’ve tried to skew the arguments to what they feel with pictures -.-

well actually, lady gaga has gone out in a leotard. just saying.
but i kind of agree with the title of the post. if you’re a hip-hop/pop dancer, the less you have on/the tighter the clothing, the easier it is to move and the easier it is to see some wicked subtle moves. also, it’s hard to dance well for an entire performance in jeans. speaking from experience.
i’ve done hip-hop, ballet and jazz before and our outfits, a little down-played by the fact that it was uniform, were just as ‘slutty’ as any female performer i’ve ever seen, including belly-baring or what-have-you.

I miss the days of the Partridge family era outfits (no I wasn’t alive then but they were much more awesome than the outfits today!)
The girls face in the Miley photo is priceless.

@how_x_loverly@xanga - Your article isn’t idiotic. I actually agree with most of what you’re saying. Dressing provocatively comes with being a show-girl, and some performers are definitely that. They’re just expressing themselves as performers, and who they are on stage is not who they are in everyday life. However, I think “artists” (I wouldn’t call Britney or Miley an artist) should be responsible for the way they represent themselves on TV and they should have a good understanding of who their audiences are. I guess performers could tone down their skimpiness (if most of their followers are tweens and whatnot) but at the same time maintain who they are as an individual.
From the comments I read above, I think it’s unfair to say that performers who dress skimpy are desperate for attention. Do you know how much attention Miley/Britney/Lady GaGa receives? They’re so famous I don’t think they could be deprived from it.
I think it’s also important to realize that sex sells, sadly enough.

I disagree with skimpy outfits and definitely on stage, especially when specific people are supposed to be idols for younger generations.
My parents took me to see “The Spirit of Christmas” or something like that at a casino a few weeks ago and while it could be thoroughly enjoyed by many, I hated it because the majority of the performers were female and dressed in fluffy-laced underwear trying too hard to look and sound sexy (in addition to trying to seduce Santa, I mean come on).
Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but unless I’m explicitly looking for partial/full nudity or raunchy poses and movements, I like my performers respectably clothed.

There is no excuse for miley or any of these singers to have to dress half naked, trust me money talks and if they wanted something made to fit there performance then they would go out there way and pay for it so they are able to dance and move comfortable on that damn stage.
Nobody is trying to turn your post around sweetie, u post something publicly and we give our opinion so stop feeling sorry for yourself and ur post because if u get all senstive maybe u shouldnt post a blog anymore. people are going to give out there opinion regardless of expecially if u have it public, If u that sensitive then do urself a favor and go private the next time.

I think these skimpy wearing singers are marketing themselves for publicity even if it is negative publicity. that is why britney spears is more famous than xtina aguilera or hillary duff. if I go to a concert or watch some music awards performance on tv, I want to be entertained, whether it be by dancing and/or the glamorous or whorish outfits they might wear
if they wore simple tshirt and jeans, it wouldn’t be as exciting to watch. britney lip synchs her concerts but people go there go mostly to watch her dance and perform a circus show. lady gaga actually sings live and dances/dresses flashy most of the time but that is how she is continuously in the spotlight. even my mother knows who lady gaga is and she doesn’t listen to that type of music
some singers wear casual clothing and just sing while strumming a guitar like taylor swift might do, which is still appealing in their own way, while others like an audio and visual explosion of entertainment. I like watching choreographed dancing on stage along with whatever creative, skimpy or even ugly outfits to give the shock factor
as long as they don’t flash their privates or panties because that is slutty, then it is okay to me.
guest
moral of the story is.. SEX SELLS. you wanna have a hawt eye pleasing concert. Wear less!
Except if you’re Gaga, i just think she doesnt enjoy pants.
Also, miley cyrus is like what 17? I dont know when it became cool to be jail bait, even if you are “singing” in a concert.

because it’s a performance

In theory I agree that costumes can be skimpy and are just part of the act. However, I have several experiences performing myself that have taught me that secure clothing helps a performance. It is important to be able to kick legs, swing arms, do the splits or a bend without worrying about straps falling or something other than your matching dance panties showing.
However, a performer may not be as exposed as the audience assumes. Many professional costumes have flesh coloured fabric sewn into them so that the person appears more naked than they are and gymnastic movements are safe. Many dancers also wear tights under their costumes.
I was in a variety group for a while and I hated the costume for one item we did regularly. It wasn’t too revealing, it actually concisted of a black full leotard, with a red tailcoat above, and fishnet stockings.
Some of the other performers were seniors and they wore this costume comfortably. However, I preferred the times we knew that the audience was more conservative and wore long black trousers as the bottom half. It was just more balanced. Perhaps if the top hadn’t been a coat!

@ordinary_gir1@xanga - Actually I saw a quote from Lady Gaga online (and I don’t know how credible this is), saying because her grandma is very nearly blind and can only see lighter colors, she will be able to notice someone who is showing more skin (given they have light skin), so Lady Gaga wears no pants so her grandma will be able to see her. I know, it sounds like she might not have been serious, but that’s just what she said.

There really is NO reason for those outfits, they can move around in NORMAL clothes that aren’t as slutty or skimpy. And PART of the problem with these performers is not JUST how they dress on stage but also HOW they ACT on stage. When one dresses like a slut (or in skimpy clothes) and still acts like she has morals and class people tend to overlook the clothes, but dress like that and act like a slut and people with judge you. You may or may not be one, but you are acting like one and it makes you look bad.
Also SOME of these stars target audience is very young girls, and while I don’t think they should be role models they are and always will be, and while parents need to teach the young daughters that just because whichever star dresses that way, doesn’t mean you get to, many kids either aren’t being taught that or don’t care. So I think that when their target audience is young girls, Like Britney (at least when she started, I don’t know about now) and Miley they DO need to tone it down a bit. They need to take responsibility for the influence that they have on their fans.

Ballerinas dress in skin-tight outfits too.. and everyone knows ballerinas are cock-guzzling whores.

Miley gets bad press for reasons other than her clothes. Usually it has to do less with her clothing (although not always) and more with her actions or with what she’s saying.
Britney is considered lame and a has-been now, by many people, and I think that’s what motivates a lot of the bad press about her. As a mother and someone whom a lot of people feel has had their moment in the sun and has “outlived” it, should be doing more respectable things. Is that stance right to take? Well, I guess it depends on who you are. I’m not saying its right or wrong. I’m just saying that’s what I seem to get the impression of.
And as for Lady Gaga, she wears what she wears outside of the stage to shock people on purpose. I’m sure of that. And on stage, her costumes actually have a meaning directly pertaining to what she is singing about at the time. Miley Cyrus probably doesn’t wear costumes that directly pertain to what she is singing about, whether you have to look and really think about it or not.
Britney has been known, however, to wear costumes that directly pertain to what she is singing about.
And country singers DO dance around on stage. Although, you’re right, not all of them do and the ones that do don’t do it every time.

lmao @ the girls face in the background….same face i made when i saw this =]

It’s ridiculous. These people are supposed to be role models for kids. Especially Miley, as to being on Disney, a children’s channel. What does she want to do, teach 8 year olds to wear skimpy clothing and grow up to be strippers?
cherry blossom / 32 posts
I’ve always felt that celebrities who dress really slutty or trashy, who wear skimpy outfits and dance around on stage like pornstars, or pose in playboy, or make sex tapes, have scandals etc don’t have enough talent so they need to do those things to stay in the public eye.
Like think about it.. if Miley Cyrus stood there in jeans and shirt everyday or i guess cute clothes that weren’t slutty and sang one of her songs without any backup assistance or anything, would people enjoy it? Or if Britney sang a normal song in her natural voice, people would get bored. Lady Gaga although I think is a bit different because I do feel she has some REAL talent. She has an amazing voice and i love her writing, so i’m not sure why she chooses to be so eccentric, I suppose it’s because most people might not really ‘get’ her if she was just about the music…
Anyway, my point being, if you compare celebs who have had sex scandals, who dress provocatively to those who don’t, those who are comfortable just performing naturally or making quality movies without needing to pose nude in magazines, it is about talent.
That’s why I respect celebrities who don’t do attention grabbing things like dressing slutty or dancing like a stripper. Because i really think they have enough talent to grab people’s attention without resorting to strange things.

Outrageous outfits don’t bother me as long as its somewhat appropriate. Miley looking like a stripper definitely isn’t appropriate while shes preforming to a bunch of twelve year olds.

@BoStOnIaNMoMmY@xanga - It’s not that I’m sensitive about my post. It’s just the fact that they twisted a little bit of what I was try to say in my post. They changed the title to make you think that I think it’s “totally okay” to wear skimpy clothes onstage when really the original title was “Is There A Legitimate Reason To Wear Skimpy Clothes Onstage”
Not to mention, the photo they chose does NOTHING for it. I’ll just add my own photos next time if they would allow me.
guest
i think they dress just fine.
i do think miley is slutty tho.
guest
1st off, i wouldnt put Miley in the same group with Britney and Lady Gaga they are of age. She is only 17 yrs old. Thats why people have such a problem with it. Not to mention the fact that the avg age of her fans is round 10-16, somewhere round there. What is a 10yr old supposed to think when they see their favorite singer grindin on a stipper pole?
guest
It is completely unacceptable to wear skimpy outfits on stage, even if you ARE doing hardcore dance moves that require the “ability to move” in your clothes or are working up a sweat. So dancing like that for hours might make you a little warm, suck it up.
This is like the ICE-SKATER SLUT problem all over again. Have you seen the outfits they wear? My God, I am never going to let my children anywhere near dancing, ice-skating, swimming…
guest
Lol. Lady Gaga is notorious for never wearing pants.
guest
Mhm…because, God knows, dancing in clothing is too damn difficult.
We judge Miley because she’s 17 and the main role model for 10 year old girls…hence, it’s actually a problem when she pole dances in booty shorts.

haha hilarious face on the chick in the background!!

@hopethatitglows@xanga - I know that’s pretty much the main argument right there because of her age and all, but how is an artist suppose to go about the situation when they’re ready for a more mature crowd? She’s maturing so why shouldn’t her audience? There’s plenty of people my age that listen to her music. I mean, at least she’s not singing songs about sex or anything trashy.
But really, how would or should she go about that? She can’t stay a child entertainer forever, right?
guest
@how_x_loverly@xanga - It is a tough situation to be in, but the fact of the matter is that she is still on the Disney Channel starring in Hannah Montana, so her primary audience is still 10 year old girls that aspire to be her…if she wants a more mature audience, she should cut ties with Disney, and probably change her sound too because not many people my age and older enjoy teeny boppers with auto tune as their main sound.
sunflower / 317 posts
@hopethatitglows@xanga - I know she’s slowly weening away from that since there have been nothing but re runs lately. They come out with a new episode every once in awhile. I admit that I regularly watch the show and have been since it first aired. Personally, I find it funny and the way she acts on the show and the way she speaks in her southern accent sometimes, it really all just reminds me of my childhood best friend because she did a lot of those same things. But that’s just me.
But I understand where you’re coming from and that maybe it wouldn’t hurt for her to tone it down until she reaches that level where she’s pretty much out of the teeny bopper phase. But I also understand that she’s a really determined individual. Always wanted to race through the current step to get to the next and I know how that is. I feel that way all the time.
I mean, I don’t want to make it seem like I’m just trying to defend her just because I actually like her but I’ve been trying to become more understanding with the situations I personally don’t know anything about. It’s just a judgmental thing and I feel like I don’t have the right to criticize unless I know the whole situation, you know?
guest
@how_x_loverly@xanga - While I’m not a fan of her show, I know that (clearly) many, many people are. She’s a big money maker for Disney and it would be almost crazy of her to ditch the company that made her a bankable empire.
I hope you don’t think that I’m trying to be confrontational, that totally wasn’t my goal!
My purpose was to say that becoming a sex object shouldn’t be necessary for women to make it in the music world. I think it’s sad that in order to be “grown up”, girls like Miley have to wear clothing that would be allowed on any high school/middle school campus, or that she has to pole dance or anything. I’ll admit that I am being a little judgmental, but it’s hard when my 8 year old cousin worships her and goes around the living room singing her songs and practically booty dancing. I definitely respect your argument and opinions on this matter though. =)

Famous women have an obligation to set a good examle for the girls who watch them.
Miley Cyrus is under greater scrutiny than many other female performers because she is greatly known to many pre-teen girls as Hannah Montana. The image portrayed her Hannah Montana character is what attracted most of her fan base, and is a completely different image than the one given when she dresses inappropriately for a concert.
It’s false advertising… or just lying.
She showed everyone a bag of cotton candy and delivered a box of thumb tacks.

they do it for attention, not because it’s practical.

I’m pretty sure that Lady Gaga would totally go out in a leotard to get starbucks.
guest
for gaga, i think it is an art. it’s part of her SHOW. i like to think that some of the things she wears are kind of… art?
as for miley, she just wants to run around in flimsy outfits. i saw her show a couple years ago (free tickets… don’t judge!) and much of the show consisted of waiting around after every song for her to do a costume change into something even more revealing. that ain’t cute.
guest
errrr. no to that.

@Salivarysatisfaction@datingish - thank you. frikkin ballet dancers don’t get flack for spreading their legs all over the stage and doing splits and wearing NOTHING…but GOD FORBID someone put on a leotard to sing a damn song.
over it.
