Whenever FashionTV shows the behind-the-scenes of fashion shows, do you ever wonder why are the supermodels constantly chewing on gum? It’s like the trade’s candy!
The action of chewing actually serves as a form of exercise for our jaws. Jaw movement promotes facial exercise which not only helps to relax the body and increase blood circulation, it also tones up facial muscles.
Perhaps models do know about this – the habitual practice that keeps their face looking slim, toned and elongated.
Facial exercises can help to :
- Reduce stiffness from face- Reduce formation of wrinkles
- Increases elasticity of skin
- Keep skin muscles in place
- Maintains skin tissues from premature aging
If losing weight is your purpose, chewing gum can help you lose weight! Choose sugarless gum (if you don’t want to promote tooth decay), if you get the craving to pop something into your mouth. Chewing helps curb your appetite and gives your mouth something to do, besides snacking in between meals.
Ironically, smoking has almost the same effect. As you inhale, the sucking motion works your facial muscles as well, though lesser than chewing gum. Do not get me wrong, I DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT promote smoking and I definitely do not approve of people picking up that habit. If ever you have the urge to puff, perhaps pick up a gum and chew.
Chewing Gum Is Good.Com *disclaimer : results may not be significant and varies from person to person
Remember, after you chew, dispose of your gum properly. Be responsible socially.
Do your practice this? Do you think it works?

No, I don’t practice this and I have no idea if it works, heh.

it sounds interesting
but i don’t think it works…

If I am hungry and you give me a piece of sugarless gum, I will throw you down a hill. When someone wants food, they want food. Facial exercises? You know how much gum you’d have to chew in order to witness the most miniscule result? Oh, and the aspartame. Yum yum yum…

Hm, I never see models with gum. I do always see them with a bottle of water, though! Like, literally always!

I really like gum.
guest
i always liked gum.
guest
I imagine it does all that this post mentioned since the mouth is moving but their jaw must be sore after.
guest
No, I don’t do this..and I’m not sure if it’d actually works.

I think it’s because they’re actually starving or the cocaine… makes you want some sugar.
guest
but chewing gum too much can also weaken enamel w/e its spelled

Chewing a lot of gum makes it work like a laxative.
Though you’d probs have to chew a lottttttttttt Thought i’d share

If I still have a while before lunch, I’ll chew a piece…convincing my body it’s eating something so it’ll shut up long enough to hold me over. And if we’re out on the town my boyfriend will chew a piece if his acid reflux starts acting up because the mint helps absorb it or something like that (according to his mom…at any rate, it helps however it works).
guest
Chewing too much gum loosens your jaw though. My mom and my cousin used to chew a lot of gum and now sometimes when they chew you can hear this weird clicking sound.
guest
I never knew about the muscle and toning, but I always chew gum if I have a craving. It works!
guest
Uh I actually get hungry when I chew gum.
guest
I thought they chewed gum to rid themselves of cravings..
guest
smoking is gross. i like gum. (:

I do this. I chew gum when I am craving.

Interesting…

It works, but I’m really not supposed to chew gum because I have TMJ [some sort of jaw thing], so if I chew gum for too long, it’ll give me a headache and a jawache… I also clench my jaw and grind my teeth, er, I just have a lot of issues.
guest
chewing gum tricks your stomach into thinking it’s getting some kind of food. terrible on an empty stomach
like how you can’t stop drooling when you first get braces. uck
orchid / 235 posts
They chew gum for the same reasons baseball players do- they don’t get to eat fro long hours of time. The sugars from gum helps them from passing out because they haven’t eaten anything.
As far as losing weight goes, you’re just keeping yourself from easting because there’s gum in your mouth. Not a healthy way to lose weight.
guest
i’m pretty sure chewing gum just makes you feel hungry… ’cause the chewing is fooling your stomach into thinking there’s something coming down, but there’s never anything coming down…

i understand the “benefits” of chewing gum…but I wish people wouldn’t chew so OBNOXIOUSLY!!! I hate obnoxious gum chewers, which is 95% of all gumchewers.
orchid / 218 posts
but after awhile it really makes your face hurt. haha.
trust me, from 6:40 in the morning til somewhere after 4 i would have a piece of gum in my mouth. granted, not the same piece of gum, but chewing a piece of gum nonetheless.

I think models do it for the appetite suppression. The faces–I think it’s all genes. I rather drink water because chewing can make the jaw all sore.
guest
my guess is that theyre bored.

i chew gum every day of my life and i’ve never noticed anything lol
guest
Probably true but chewing too much causes air to enter ur stomach and makes u even more hungry. Anyway, for preventing wrinkles, braiding works. Have you ever tried to frown your eyebrows after getting ur hair braided super tight? ( the more braids the better), it’s like botox!
guest
Or they chew it so they can avoid eating.
guest
haha i love this post. i chew gum constantly. and yes its very true, it also helps u focus when u need to, like n class if ur anything ike me
xoxo
guest
Chewing gum makes me gassy. So I try not to chew so much. lol
guest
The puckering of your mouth around the cigarette actually causes wrinkles around your mouth … so does drinking from straws constantly.
I actually hate gum :/ there’s just SOMETHING about it. I’m a mint person
guest
I chew gum, not really for toning facial muscles, it’s just good dental hygiene after eating.
I’m curious what affect gum chewing and facial exercising would have on wrinkles. It seems like it could prevent a double chin, but the extra movement might cause wrinkles to appear quicker.
guest
YES !!! It works i quit smoking last year and this helped me it still does and it does firm up your face a bit, I have seen those results too
guest
I was just wondering about this. I noticed how I chewed gum constantly one night ALL NIGHT LONG. The next morning my jaw was sooooo sore but my facial muscles seemed a lil toner. It is def a good exercise! lol
guest
I never knew that..I chew gum every day
guest
Haha. I only chew gum to keep my breath from smelling.

@cinnamontoastsalinda@xanga -
Same! ><

I find this post interesting.
Chewing gum makes a person hungry. So I imagine how the models must feel after they ”strut their stuff” on the runway. They are probably thinking, “I really need a burger right now!” But many of them are skinny, so maybe they want to feel hungry and keep their shape…..
guest
Haha, this is interesting. I didn’t know gum could help you lose weight.
Apparently it can also help you think more or stimulate your brain or whatever..
I chew gum simply because I love cracking it XP
Now that I gave it more thought, I think it actually does get rid of my hunger. Only temporarily though. After I spit it out, I’d probably still want to eat everything in site :p
guest
i heard chewing gum during tests gives you better scores.. because it keeps your brain flowingg lol
daisy / 556 posts
It probably does work, lol. As for why supermodels do it, I think its more likely they do it so that they aren’t so hungry, considering how thin they usually have to be/stay. The facial/skin effects are probably just bonuses.
guest
i sometimes down 5 packs of sugarless gum a day. i do it to keep myself from binging when i;m not hungry. it works.
guest
Yeah, but cigarettes make you get wrinkles all around your lips!
guest
@Manstration@xanga - LOL xD

I never thought of gum this way!!
guest
I really hate chewing gum, actually … it causes you to take in excessive amounts of air which oftentimes will make you gassy (sorry if that sounds gross hahah). But it just ends up hurting my stomach every time.
Plus, I know some girls who chew gum ALL THE TIME, and their jaws are actually pretty … MANLY now :O

Aw… I have TMJ/D (the disc in my jaw joint becomes displaced if I repeatedly open and close my jaw), so I can’t chew gum.
Interesting post, though…
guest
I chew gum all the time to keep from snacking on food.
guest
i ama huge gum chewer..but not so much recently b/c i switched over to sunflower seeds :p butchewing gum made me so hungry!!soi end up eating more than i should
guest
ive always thought that chewing gum would work out your facial muscles,
but rather than make them long and elongated, it would make the
masseter (jaw muscle) grow in size, thus giving the appearance of a
more masculine jaw.

Please, for God’s sake, if there is one thing I absolutely hate, and this doesn’t only apply to you but basically the entire world, and it’s my ONE grammar nazi thing that I pick on…..
IT’S A PIECE OF GUM.
NOT A GUM.
I’m done! Sorry!
Thanks for letting me say that.
guest
I chew gum when I’m hungry.
I don’t give a damn about my face muscles.
I’m losing weight.

Actually, that clicking sound is quite the opposite. It means the jaw is anything but loose. I’ve played the clarinet for about 9 years, and know how tight your muscles need to be to play some of those high range notes…
When I started taking singing lessons and my teacher noticed I had this same sound when we spoke about how one needs to sing with a loose jaw. He said it was because I trained my jaw to lock up, meaning it was too tight
If their jaw was loose you wouldn’t hear any sound.
@sweetsweetsugarjunkie@xanga
Sorry about the bold. For whatever reason it keeps changing it when I post…
guest
I knew there was good reason for gum chewing!!
guest
But it also makes you hungry doesn’t it?
