As a college student, I own a lot of jeans and hoodies for class and sparkly tanks for weekend nights. These outfits would not fly in a professional environment, but in January I’ll be starting co-op and can’t afford an entire new look (no matter how much I long to dress like a Club Monaco mannequin). I’ve been brainstorming ideas on how to turn what I already have into professional attire, and here are some rules I’ve come up with:
1. Instead of buying a slew of cute professional pieces, invest in the basics.
My list of basics includes high-waisted black or grey pencil skirts, black pumps and flats, tights, different colored blouses, blazers, and a good quality bag big enough to carry everything you’ll need for the day. If you buy all these basics at a combination of medium-price stores like Ann Taylor LOFT and discount chains like Marshall’s, you should be able to look like a pro for years for under $400.
2. Tuck it in and layer.
You actually may be able to wear that sparkly tank to the office – if it’s tucked into a pencil skirt and worn under a blazer. This lets a little bit of your personality shine through and keeps your outfit from being too boring. This mantra works for most tops and mini dresses, just leave the t-shirts for bedtime or the gym.
3. Accessorize smartly.
That basic shift can be upgraded to “wow” level with a statement necklace and a pair of colored pumps can make your black suit pop. Strategically add stylish accessories to a plain look for a budget-friendly, fashion-forward look!
Shopping Tips:
For blazers, pants, and skirts that are both affordable and high quality hit up Banana Republic, Ann Taylor LOFT, or Express.
These same stores will have some nice tops, but buying a large quantity of inexpensive tops from places like H&M, Forever 21, American Eagle Outfitters, etc. will give you more looks to play with.
For shoes that are high in comfort and quality but low in price, locate a store near you that carries Seychelles or Chinese Laundry. You should also visit the nearest Marshall’s that has a Shoe Megashop built in – they often carry designer brand shoes for less than $50. Don’t cheap out on shoes by buying them as stores like Aldo or Forever 21 – they won’t last more than a few months and your feet will be in pain.
For accessories, hit up Forever 21, H&M, Zara, Charlotte Russe, and Wet Seal. If you want to get stuff that’s a little higher-end, sign up for private sale sites like Gilt and RueLaLa – they have weekly sales of big-name designer jewelry, shoes, handbags, and more that are up to 90% off regular price.
Do you feel like your wardrobe is professional? What do you wear to your office, or what would you wear?

I just revamped my college wardrobe to the professional wardrobe. New York and Company and Express were my saving graces.

Great post! I’ve also found some cute blazers at Charlotte Russe. Also, Marshalls is my best friend!!

Good pieces of advice. I had to take on this revamping thing when I started working for IBM.

I have some “professional” clothes, but in fact, working in a bank this summer, I felt sooooooooo bad in my “professional clothes” because my collegues were wearing… casual clothes. Even a jogging one time. So, I love those clothes, but since I want to be a teacher for primary school, and that those clothes don’t really fit a “bank clerk” post… well. I make them at my image with accesories and make up. Gave me the look of a sadic secretary lol
I prefer have clothes that I can wear everywhere, either at work or in my leisure time.

Lol. My professional wardrobe was created during my first year of college, and money was ridiculously tight. I did what you did, just add NY&Co. and look through department store sales. I found so many good things on different outings to Macy’s from blazers, to dress pants, and SHOES!! This is a great post.

Express has the best skinny dress pants eveerrr =P Well imo lol.
Most of my clothes are from Express and the shirts are from American Eagle and Forever 21.
My high school requires you to dress “professionally”. So they guys have to wear suits and button down shirts with dress pants and dress shoes and us girls have it easy though. Skirts, blouses, pants, heel,s flats, etc. I mostly wear a blouse with skinny dress pants and flats or if the weather is nice, a skirt or dress

I’ve been doing this since high school. I was hoping for more different tips but… oh well, these are great ones since they’ve worked for me in the past!

these are great tips. I don’t really have any to add. My wardrobe is professional, but it should be as I am in my 30s. I could have used this advice when I was younger. I remember my mom buying and giving me a bunch of clothes that made me feel like an old lady at the time.

Definately invest is the high-wasted skirts! I’ve recently started to change up my wardrobe to, in fact I went on a bit of a shopping spree today lol.
I don’t know where you live, but if you have ever heard of the store SIRENS, I’d check out there clothes. Very resonable prices and their clothing has a business feel to it and still looks trendy and amazing. They also have clothes for going out and looking classy.

When I started an office job at a car dealership my boss told me to dress professionally. So I went and spent my entire check on professional clothes, and then when I was done training I went to another dealership. My coworkers were wearing jeans, graphic tees, and sometimes even lounge pants. I felt uncomfortable wearing my professional clothes, but I would have felt even more uncomfortable wearing the clothes I wear at home when I’m sick.

i think my wardrobe is really professional. i work in a business casual building but i usually in a business suit or always have a sports jacket on and always wearing heels. i understand that i dont necessarily work with the general public, but i still like to dress professional and it helps me to do a great job.

great tips! this summer i bought some really nice yet cheap workplace clothes at the jackson outlets… so yeah! go to outlets!
now, is there any kind of shoe that’s acceptable in a professional setting that does not have any heel?

mmhm i definitely need to buy more professional clothes

I have a business jacket, staple black pants, and some business shirts as well as some presentable singlet tops. I think a jacket (blazer) is a must!

Make sure to have some mix-and-match sweaters, dress pants, and flats for those days when you’re tired/having your period/just don’t feel like being cute!!
I have to dress professionally pretty often for patient encounters (I’m a 2nd year medical student), and I find that the dress clothes I’ve always had (for church, etc.) don’t always work. If you’re gonna be moving around a lot, bending over, getting close to people, and still trying to be modest and professional… there’s a completely different standard on skirt lengths and necklines!

You didn’t mention one of my favorite stores for professional clothes on a budget – The Limited. Right now they are having a great sale. I got 2 shirts and 2 pairs of pants for right around 150 dollars. I love The Limited. Next on my list is a pencil skirt.

yeah i’m still in the process of transitioning my wardrobe. No more graphic T-shirts & jeans for me. I don’t go on a “professional” shopping-spree, but whenever I do get the chance to go shopping I make sure I don’t buy what I already have which is tons of clothes that allow me to pass for 16 & sometimes even a middle-schooler (when I’m around this certain area where I usually go to the library). But if you really need to change your wardrobe, you’ll find a way
I still keep my sweatshirts & hoodies & all that other fun stuff around when I hang out with my friends or over the summer sometimes.

yeah i don’t think a college student would be able to buy a $200 necklace/blouse…. hahah….. so maybe not the loft or whatever those expensive stores are.
but yes, i usually buy some skirts or blouses whenever i have money. i love target for this purpose
stores like that. thankfully,i live in san diego so i only need 1 light sweater, 1 jacket, 3 pairs of jeans, and a handful of t-shirts to survive in “COLD” weather XD

Good post but CLEARLY you come from money/are made of money/are out of your mind because express, ban rep, and ann taylor loft are all really expensive shops.

Awesome tips! I’m actually building up my professional wardrobe right now. I had a great one a few years ago, but somehow I grew out of almost everything (mostly blouses and blazers) within 2 years. It felt like such a waste! I don’t want to buy more stuff and grow out of it again so any way I can save money is great! I plan on making trips to Marshall’s and maybe Express & The Limited.
Btw, Aldo is cheap to you? I always thought Aldo and Bakers were pretty decent shoe stores. Forever21, Alloy, & Delia’s always seemed like they carried cheap and uncomfortable shoes.

forever 21 !
