Some people, cough -Perez Hilton-cough, found her statement offensive but I happen to agree with her.
So if money can’t buy you style, than saying “it’s something you’re born with” isn’t that far fetched is it?
Having a sense of style also doesn’t mean you’re always going to “get it right” either. Name a starlet that’s always on a best dressed list and I’ll show you the cringe-worthy outfit she once wore. Having a sense of style simply means, in my opinion, you use clothing as another form of expression and you have an appreciation for it as another art form even if it may not make sense to most people.
I happen to care very much about fashion and I think it’s very important. My friends, however, couldn’t care less about fashion; they throw on their jeans and tanks and they look great. It doesn’t make them any less beautiful. They just don’t care.
Do you find Ashley Olsen’s statement offensive? Do you care about fashion?

guest
I don’t care about fashion at all. I think it’s just a choice how much you want to get caught up in that world.
guest
i love fashion
but i disagree with her
i grew into my love of fashion as i grew up
and its still growing or maybe it was always there
and i just didn’t know…hmmm

how is it offensive? I think its true
I see people with no money at all who are way more fashionable then some of my wealthy friends. It depends on how you put outfits together and creating them in your mind, not where you buy your clothes.
magnolia / 1369 posts
Nah I agree with her. Either you care or you don’t. It doesn’t mean you look bad… it just means you aren’t necessarily the most fashionable. lol
guest
It’s a pretty legit statement. I don’t see why anyone would find that offensive.
guest
I agree with her.
I’m one of those who was NOT born with a sense of style… I really have to TRY to get a nice outfit put together- it doesn’t just come naturally to me as it does for some people.
guest
I’m a Fashion Designer and i agree, either you care or you don’t. somedays i don’t care and i wear jeans and an ugly shirt, days when i care, i wear something eye catching. i love people who rock what they want to wear, to me, this is fashion at its best
guest
No to both.
guest
i really dont see how this statement is offensive. shes not in any way saying “i have better genes than you” (no pun intended….really!) Yea maybe she likes the way she dresses but what’s wrong with that? its just like referring to the way you decorate your home- youre either born with these fancy decorations/money to buy them- or you just dont care too much about interior decorating. You dont have to have a lot of money to have a nice home, for there a plenty of cheap & crafty DIY’s that really add character.
Also, a “sense of style” does not refer to a certain genre or what’s “in”. if you can pull of a few one-of-a-kinds and look great, then more power to ya ; )

I love fashion, but I don’t express that in what I wear. I think you are born with a natural sense for color coordination, unique pieces, things like that. Every since I was a little girl I had unique fashion, and I loved it! I just quit expressing that later on. I don’t think Ashley Olsen has great fashion sense……
guest
I can see where she’s right, but I somewhat disagree. Some people are just born with a fashion sense, and either harness it or do not care. Other people don’t have a fashion sense, but they can develop one. I guess the only part I disagree with is the inborn fashion sense. Other than that, she’s right; people either care, or they don’t.
guest
It’s kind of a blunt thing to say, but it’s true!
daffodil / 1540 posts
i don’t think you’re born with a sense of style; my parents let me dress myself at a young age and it was wild and horrible. but as i grew up more i developed a sense of style. but it is true that you either care or you don’t. so to answer your questions: yes and no, and to an extent.
guest
You can’t be born with a sence of style. *_*
sunflower / 310 posts
I enjoy fashion, and it’s hard for me to say that her statement is true because when I was younger I never cared. Kids who are ten and twelve don’t get much exposure to fashion, and I think that not one fashionable person was fashionable from childhood, unless their parents made them that way. I think you may be born with the disposition to one day realize your love of fashion, but it’s hard to say when you hit the point that you have made your desicion.
I don’t see it as offensive. You’d have to be pretty angry and far-fetched to come up with a reason for that, in my opion.
guest
It’s not offensive but I don’t think it’s true. People can develop better senses of fashion. There may be someone who doesn’t care about fashion when they’re younger, but when they’re older, they may start reading fashion magazines and paying attention and suddenly they care more and also know how to pick out outfits better than ever. People don’t stay the same throughout their entire life.
guest
I agree that you either care or don’t, but as far as being born with a sense of style it’s not necessarily true. A lot of people become interested over time, while there are those who love fashion even as a little kid. However, I do think there are some who will just never get it “right”.

Perez Hilton will say anything for a little bit of attention. Seriously, this is one of those statements where you either totally agree or you simply disagree. What is there to be “offended” by?
daffodil / 1607 posts
This is offensive?? Really??
rose / 960 posts
i think it’s true. i love clothes and fashion and i’ve always taken what i wear seriously. back in elementary school, my mother put my hair in a pony-tail every day and i still found ways to change it up with hair accessories and the few clothes i had
and i believe you can be born with it without realizing it for some time. like being gay!
and perez hilton disagrees because he sucks at dressing himself.
daisy / 565 posts
no.. it’s not offensive! she soo cute in that simple outfit!!
guest
No, I do not find it offensive at all. I mean some people look good in everything, some can only wear certain clothes, and well some people just look awkward in everything. It’s a fact of life, honestly..
cherry blossom / 36 posts
The only reason Perez thought it was offensive is because he is one of those born without a sense of style who thinks he can buy it. I completely love that quote, though! I think it’s going on my list of quotes.
sunflower / 382 posts
Lol, I love that quote.
And hmm…I’m sure Halle Barry never looked bad in an outfit. Of course, I don’t keep a record of it – but she has a very classic beauty about her that makes whatever she wears good
guest
Yeah, I’m sure she was born with it.
guest
I disagree…I care about fashion a little bit but I don’t go crazy over having the perfect outfit all the time. I am totally in-between caring and not caring. sometimes i love shopping and sometimes i hate it. i really would rather not dwell on something so superficial…it’s not me. but it’s fun to go on a shopping spree sometimes. i think a lot of people are like me. i don’t think you’re born with a sense of style, but your environment influences you into your sense of style.
guest
i don’t find it offensive remarks. however i never attracted to trendy followers wearing whatever the hell mainstream trendy is. that’s so boring.
guest
her statement is so wrong
Most people* arent born* with a sense of style
It’s something they learn and pick up along the way
guest
I think what she’s saying is true, but I suppose there are always nicer ways to phrase things so it doesn’t come off offensive (or as offensive to as many people). It sounded a little standoffish to me when I first read it, before reading the rest of the entry. I also think style can be cultivated. The more a person experiments with different clothes and accessories the better they know what works for them. It’s ultimately about what they look/feel good in and how that is conveyed to the rest of the world. Some people are born with the eye for style; others work really hard for it.
guest
How in the hell was it offensive? Perez needs to get a grip. I totally agree with your statement here:
“Style has nothing to do with money either. People aren’t stylish because they can afford to buy vintage Yves Saint Laurent.”
And you really do either have a sense of style or you dont.
@mileyfan08@xanga - Lmfao! So true! He’s “personally offended” though the statement is in no way “offensive”.
guest
I agree.
guest
Ashley Olsen is a short, weird looking little preppy girl who’s had everything handed to her on a silver platter from the time she and her sister were playing “Michelle” on Full House, so who gives a fuck what she thinks?

guest
i dont care about fashion.
guest
I love that quote. Everyone has their own sense of style… I think I dress pretty cool, I have guts to wear whatever I want… and I obviously rock it all! It depends on the person and all.
guest
i don’t really agree. but then, i don’t really care, because i wouldn’t take fashion advice from someone who wears fur anyways. seriously, EW.
guest
i don’t find it offensive at all.
guest
you’re mixing up what she said- being born with a sense of style is not the same as caring about fashion. a lot of people who care too much about fashion do not actually have a sense of style. style is personal and is an expression of oneself. going a bit further, a good sense of style usually means that no matter the outfit you conjure, you will never look ridiculous. anyway, i think that what ashley said is completely accurate, it’s something that i have observed and believed so myself, especially in my family (there are three of us girls), which first drew my attention to this. having said that, i do believe that even if one is not born with a natural sense of style, it can be developed.
guest
@bitterbittenrockinblonde22@xanga - you sound disgruntled because you werent handed the same fate. i think she dresses well, therefore it’s interesting to hear what she thinks about this particular topic. conversely, britney spears was a sweet little girl from louisiana who had to work a bit harder to get her head into superstardom. but have you seen the way she dresses? therefore i dont care what britney thinks. it’s all in the context, my dear. (besides which, acting- and especially as a child -is hard work, just as any other. i think their money is well-deserved)

I’m sure it has to do with money… I mean i can’t buy a lot of clothes because i’m broke. i know you can buy cheap clothes. But i can’t buy anything!!! It’s even hard to find money to pay the bills. i love fashion, i know how to dress but… i have to keep it simple… now
guest
i definitely agree, i don’t care about fashion and i doubt i ever will. haha
guest
it’s not offensive, it’s true
guest
Offensive? Nah.
guest
Fashion is about 45% of my life.
But I don’t really care what she says in particular.
guest
Isn’t everything offensive to perez hilton?
guest
How an you be BORN with fashion?
I absolutely love the first dress…
guest
I like fashion, but I disagree with her. I used to be very unfashionable, but I gained a sense of style later on.
guest
I agree with you
I take fashion seriously
it’s what separates me from the crowd!
guest
i agree. i have no sense of style and never did. even when i think i match, my friends disagree. style is something that you’re born with and some people can only look at ashley olsen pictures *cough* and pine.
guest
Oh yeah, totally. I mean, a sense of style is never borne through different life experiences. The ability to coordinate clothing is encoded in our DNA? Right? Right?!

I don’t think her Statement offensive, but a bit pretentious. If she said this, we can think that it was because according to her, she HAS this sense of fashion.
In fact, fashion sense is subjective (according to me, that don’t like trend but make my own), and I don’t think that their style (of those twins) is so “pretty”. I prefer Dita Von Teese style for exemple. But it’s so so subjective !
guest
i don’t think it’s offensive.

I used to be a tomboy but once my boyish figure filled out and I started experimenting with more than t-shirts and jeans, I started to like fashion. Maybe you can be born with it, but it lies dormant for a while.
magnolia / 1354 posts
I don’t agree nor disagree with her statement… Some are born with a sense of fashion but I feel that if you work hard enough you CAN develop a sense of fahion as well.
Yes, I do care about fashion, always have, always will.
guest
I don’t really care about fashion. I buy what I can afford, I wear what is comfortable, and I don’t give a shit about what people think.
guest
Naw, it’s not offensive. I kinda agree with it.
guest
how is that offensive?
i care about fashion to some extent.
magnolia / 1030 posts
i think ashley’s statement is wrong
and i agree with basically what you said i think some outfits donned amazing/great are pukeworthy
guest
Haha. Ignorant fuck.
guest
i don’t see how it’s offensive.. some ppl were born with different abilities that are better than others, simple as that.. she simply has an eye for fashion whereas some don’t
guest
@Begierde - precisely. a sense of style is personal and subjective and to each his own. therefore i think we are all born with a sense of style- our own style. some people, however, are slaves to fashion trends, and that’s not really about having your own style, it’s just about wholesale copying and changing as fashion does. i think people are confusing ‘fashion sense’ with ‘sense of style’ but they are two completely different things and not interchangeable.
guest
Baha I love Ashley Olsen. I could care less if she says something offensive or not. But I disagree about being born with a sense of style. A lot of people grow up not caring about these kinda things. But you can still teach ‘em the ways of the fashion world.
Or maybe I’m interpreting her quote the wrong way.
guest
how is it offensive? i don’t know why anyone would be offended by that. lol
well i wouldn’t really say you’re born with it but it’s true, you either know fashion or you don’t.
guest
i think fashion designers and trend setters are born with a sense of style, the rest just follow it.
guest
I dont think its offensive. I think it’s offensive to judge people who don’t care by what they wear and whether they always have a mani-pedi because what may seem sloppy to one person is just not to another, because of youth/ what kind of job they have or any number of reasons.
i always feel ghetto around my boyfriend’s mom because i know she values caring about matching outfits well and looking well groomed or like you care in general…sometimes its fun but sometimes its just not necessary- like you just spent the day outside and you’re tired and you want to wear your sweats, or whatever
guest
I agree with others are sayinng, I believe what Ashley said was BLUNT but i do agree with her statement.
guest
I don’t think scientists will ever find a “fashionable” gene. It’s an attitude that is learned and can vary in circumstances. Some days I care a lot about looking original and stylish and other days clothes are just something to keep me from getting arrested for public nudity. She very rich and spends every waking minute with cameras following her, so I don’t think she is a good example for the average woman’s wardrobe or style. $200 bright yellow pants for her would be great since they are more likely to get her in a magazine and could help herr career, plus that’s a bargain if you’re hauling in millions and have the ability to frequently update your wardrobe. If you’re not famous, need to look respectable, mature and boring to further your career, tend to engage in rough dirty strenuous activities, and are broke and too busy to shop, you’ll benefit from having a more bland wardrobe with safe versatile pieces that will last long. I want to dress so that people look at ME, not my clothes. I’d rather hear “you look radiant!” than “That’s such a stylish outfit!”

Fashion is not my fav thing in life…
