Have you ever watched “House”? If not, it’s a medical show revolving around the notoriously blunt doctor named Greg House.
I was sitting downstairs, laying on my extremely comfortable couch, enjoying an episode of House.
The episode went as following: an ill woman comes in and confesses to having liposuction (she was overweight and insecure). They cure her… with a catch: she had to decide between dying thin or living overweight.
I’ve read a lot of blogs on weight issues, the way you look, and of course I can honestly relate. It’s odd how the answer to this should be immediate ; you should immediately choose living! But how many of you can honestly answer this choosing to live overweight?
What would you do?
guest
I guess it depends how many more years I have till I die. I would hate to be overweight for like 60 years. very good question.
guest
are you allowed to attempt lipo again after you choose to live overweight?
guest
How overweight are we talking?
rose / 960 posts
probably die thin.
living overweight isn’t a very comfortable life style.
guest
yeah, if it’s just a little chubby i’d choose to live – but if we’re talking like 100+ pounds overweight here, to the point where it would interfere with quality of life, it’s a totally different question.
guest
Which ever state I would be happy in. And as long as I was healthy either way.
guest
I’d rather die.
guest
I’d live overweight. What’s the point of being thin when you’re dead? I’d enjoy my double cheeses and extra thick shakes all the way to the bank. Plus, some guys are cool with fat chicks but I don’t know any (stable) men who like dead ones.
rose / 855 posts
Depends. I mean, you would obviously die pretty young if you were really overweight for a long period of time and lived unhealthily. I hate questions like this!
guest
um…well i would live overweight… because then i would live to see another day where i could do a little thing called “exercising” and not have to live overweight anymore.
and no, it’s not “easy for me to say”. if people who aren’t overweight can get off their butts and exercise without having to do so for the sake of their own well-being then what more should people who are overweight be able to do with the motivation of being healthy? it should logically be easier for them, with the extra motivation. and so it’s not really easier for everyone else than it is for them. genetics are another matter, but for the most part people who are significantly concerned about their weight won’t be scarfing down pizza or somthing unhealthy like that every week or weekend or day or hour.
hmm…this comment was way more malicious than i intended it to be / was called for. =/
ah well.
guest
Die thin. I could never live with myself overweight…If I was ever overweight I’d prob end up killing myself anyway.
guest
i’ll just work it off.
some of it.
a bit.
nah, i’d enjoy my deep fried foods until they clog my arteries for the last time. whatevs.
guest
What an unrealistic question. I doubt that you’d ever have to make that decision in real life. Because you’d always be able to lose weight. It’s difficult, not impossible.
It doesn’t matter how fat I was, I’d always have to pick life over death. (unless I was in extreme pain, in which case it would depend on how much pain)
orchid / 137 posts
die thin. being overweight would be too much for me to live with.

live overweight. I’ve got million of things to do before i die!
rose / 847 posts
Live overweight. I would obviously rather have a little extra work ahead of me than have no work at all, because I’d be dead.
The two situations are completely incomparable to me. It’s really difficult for me to comprehend how people could they’d rather die and seems very, very sad for them if it’s all factual.
guest
die thin.
sad.
guest
Without a doubt, I would live overweight. As long as I was surrounded by people who loved me for who I was, and who I loved, I would be completely content not being a supermodel.
guest
of course, i’d rather live. so maybe your clothes are bigger than usual — you’d give up your entire life for that?
guest
I wish this weren’t the truth, but die thin. I couldn’t live overweight. Life, for me, would be a nightmare. Being thin is too much a part of my identity, and I’m already trying so hard to lose weight. I would probably end up killing myself if I were significantly overweight. No, I know I would.
guest
Err… how much over-weight?
Living VERY over-weight isn’t much of a life anyway. If it was just 10, 15 pounds overweight I suppose I would live. But much more than that… and it becomes almost impossible to choose.
guest
I would rather die thin.
guest
@lilaznswtness421@xanga - same as her : P

You didn’t specify how long I had to live so I’m just going to assume I’m going to make it to 90 and die thin.
guest
agreed with @lilaznswtness421@xanga
guest
are you serious? this many people value thinness over LIFE?
why am i effing subscribed to lovelyish
guest
Wow! So many die thins it’s pathetic. Imagine already overweight people reading this, they must feel shitty, even if they’re happy. What is wrong with being a little chubby but still healthy and happy? I don’t get it! And I have an eating disorder! I would love to be happy and chubby and alive rather than dead. I almost died, wasn’t the best. And trust me, no one was complimenting me on how thin I was.
guest
Oh, I’m not so sure. Probably die thin though.

uh.. none! lol

@cutesycharm@xanga – yeah but it doesn’t state a time period. die thin = can die very old. die overweight = can also die very old. 8D

besides…. no time period! i see myself as a litle old asian lady just skin and bones when im close to death. -___-

guest
depends on how long I’d have, I think I saw that episode and it involved her having to eat chocolate cake and carbs and what not…if you really committed to working out and toning up I bet you could still have a similar, though controlled diet and not be ‘overweight’.
It’d be a tough decision, because I REALLY enjoy being thin

This is a timely post. Today I started seriously thinking about gastic bypass or the lap band. I am over 300 lbs and haven’t been less than 270 since I was 24. I have been fat my whole life and my weigh does keep me from doing things that I want to do. I am not too happy about my body unclothed. I have excessive stretch marks and sagging skin. If I get approved for bypass I get a free tummy tuck. I am 38 years old so I think I should be able to make the right decision. It is not pure vanity in my case. I have tried to lose weight on my own and I will try to do it again before I get the go ahead for surgery. If I am successful at weight loss then I won’t have it. Maybe all these years I have been doing something wrong. I am open to help which ever way it comes but I am on medicine or a diet.
guest
It depends how overweight. If we’re talking slightly overweight, chubby, “thick” whatever, that would be fine because even though I’m obsessed with losing weight I think some larger women are extremely beautiful. But it we’re talking severely obese, quality of life would be so bad and people discriminate against you all the time.. Wouldn’t be much of a life. :[
magnolia / 1017 posts
@cutesycharm@xanga - haha seriously! btw your picture freaks me out. you are way too cutesy. like seriously. wow. stop. stop.

live overweight. anyone who appreciates life will want to live.. no matter what
guest
I’d rather live overweight. If we’re to literally define the termonolgy of overweight vs. obese, overweight is less extreme than obesity. The question wasn’t asking about obesity, at least that’s how I took it. When I think of overweight, I think of 10 to 15 lbs over what your healthy weight should be. I don’t think I’d consider being obese, but I think I could deal with being a chubby bunny, haha.
magnolia / 1017 posts
@cutesycharm@xanga – it’s freakyyyy D: see i’m cutesy too but not as much as you -___- and i tone it down. i tone it very low lol.

That was tough at first, but… even though it’s harder to be overweight, I’d still much rather be alive than dead.
And, REALLY? This many people would rather DIE than live? Jeez, society sucks.
guest
To me, it’s a simple choice. Life versus death.
People want to be skinny so bad because that’s what the world wants. That’s what is considered “hot” and attractive. If someone would rather die thin than live overweight, then they’re letting the world control them. In that case, they’d have really, really low self esteem.
I would rather live overweight. Life versus death, like I said.
guest
:O spoiler!
overeight living of course i dont want to die..
guest
Why do we torture ourselves with useless, stupid questions?
guest
die thin
guest
I hate shallow questions like this.
guest
I’d absolutely rather live overweight. Who says you can’t be big and still look and feel beautiful? Who says you can’t still have a good life? I understand that would be difficult if I were, say, hundreds of pounds overweight, but if we’re only talking 30 or even 50 pounds overweight, I would definitely choose to live with that than to die sooner than I had to, just to stay thin.
Besides, if I were heavy to the point of being truly unhealthy, I could just lose some weight.
guest
I’d rather be healthy ^^

Die thin. I couldn’t live overweight.

Some of these responses are just sad.
Live overweight…
Why are there so many damn posts about thin v. fat? It’s getting tiring…
guest
die thin, without a doubt. i could never live with myself being overweight. it’s just not me.
cherry blossom / 41 posts
I can’t believe how many of you are saying you’d rather die thin. It’s not like you’re becoming paralyzed. You’re putting on weight. Has society corrupted you all so much that having a full figure is worth dying for?
Did you know that the majority of men prefer a woman of Size 14? And that the national average is Size 16?
I’m not going to get a lot of love for this, but it’s incredibly shallow and ignorant to say “Oh, I’d die if I was overweight”
No, you wouldn’t die. You’d be fine. Just because you’re overweight doesn’t mean your ugly..and it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re unhealthy either (Muscle weighs more than fat). The responses to this post honestly make me believe that the world is going to end because society can’t function with people so small minded and shallow. -_-
Ps. Oprah still looks great.
guest
It really makes me sad to see people say they’d rather die than be overweight. Or to see someone say they’d probably kill themselves if they were overweight.
Exercise. Eat right. It’s doable but hard. i’d live. i didn’t think there was another option.
guest
Die thin. Thankfully, though, I do not have to decide between these two extremes.
guest
Live overweight, maaaaan. Maybe I’ll start to value my life more and get the extra pounds off of me.
guest
die thin…living overweight would mean dying inside and without dignity. i’d rather die skinny and retain my beauty, then die a a big fat tub of goo. a year ago i weighed 124lbs and felt horrible. now at 109 i can finally be alive again and not hide in the shadows hoping nobody will see me.
guest
@The_Chaotix_Factor@xanga - You’re forgetting a little thing called “genetics,” which could make someone overweight even if they exercised as much as a psycho anorexic girl. And besides, the extra weight makes it harder to exercise because there is more of your body to move around in order to get a work-out, and because the extra weight can come with diseases that make strenuous activities difficult. Don’t hate on fat people if you don’t know much about weight issues.
In any case, for me it would depend on how high my weight was in the first place (if it’s so high I’m going to get a heart attack, I’d rather just get death over with), and whether I had the ability to go down to a lower weight. Health issues aside, I’d live fat, probably.
guest
Depends how over wight I am. Im supppper scared of dying ! And maybe I could work the weight off …
guest
lol holy crap this is ridiculous… why do i still read this crap!
Lol all the insecurities and vanity… it is pathetic…

@thisboyissexy@xanga - That’s what I said
This is so rediculous. Bigger people do not have less dignity. And yes, genetics is a HUGE factor. So is the brain. Everyone has a “set point” at which there body is comfortable.
@kiwi_greenie@xanga - You are incredibly immature. At 109 you’re probably underweight and up for many of the same health risks as someone who is overweight. You’re also insensitive and shallow for making such stupid comments.
I keep reading posts about weight. On health kicker and on here and to be honest, it’s annoying. There are other things to talk about. Yes obesity is a problem…but there are SOOOO many worse things that could happen.
This post and many of its comments are pretty much apalling to me.
guest
i ‘d rather live overweight. living means there’s still hope; you can always try and lose weight when you’re still living. if you succeed; you have a great life.Even if you’re overweight &cannot lose weight, ppl may make fun of u; but you’d still have your own friends &can still live a wonderful life. !haha i’m not too fat nor too skinny right now; but i’ve always told everyone that i would liek to be a FAT chubby grandma because they look a whole lot friendlier than the skinny ones !
guest
die thin no question
guest
This is scary. Most responders would rather die thin than live overweight? Is fashion THAT important? Many ‘thin’ people aren’t just thin, they are emaciated. Then there are the eating disorders of anorexia and bulimia! This is incredible that some people would sacrifice all for FASHION! The fashion used to be what we call obese. No wonder this country is so messed up. People have lost the ability to reason about how to chose live! It is actually MORE healthy for women to carry a little extra around the hips.
Overweight is defined by up to 10% over one’s ideal weight. For my build and height, that would put me at 176#. Can you conceive of that? Is that what House was talking about? Obesity and Morbid Obesity is another can of worms, and should be avoided.
guest
this is CRAZY.
really? you’d be willing to sacrafice life to look good in your coffin? what a nice sentiment.
OVERWEIGHT does NOT equal UNHEALTHY.
on the other hand, people seem to forget that being too thin can easily cause death, and over 10% of people diagnosed with anorexia nervosa will die from health complications related to the disease, aka they were TOO THIN TO LIVE.
it’s really sad to think some people would rather not exist than be overweight. overweight people aren’t handicapped, they aren’t deformed, they aren’t parapallegic. they can move, have fun, and enjoy life.
and no, i’m not saying this because i’m overweight and i love my life. i’m not overweight at all. but i’ve suffered with anorexia for three years, and am finally doing better. and i DO love my life. and now i see i wouldn’t give it up, even if i was overweight.
this question is really disturbing.
rose / 960 posts
@oXSweetAviators@xanga - maybe life isn’t that important. there are countless lives on this planet; too many, if the natural world’s slow demise is any indication.
@Alatariel40@xanga - muscle does not actually weigh more than fat. a pound of muscle is still a pound of muscle. it’s denser, which accounts for the apparent loss of overall body-weight, but there is no more gravity pulling on it than on fat.
guest
i would live… and i lose the weight… there is always an option in life… and being overweight just isnt for me
guest
For me it depends how bad my life is.
cherry blossom / 41 posts
@xsPoNgEs_go_SQUISHx13@xanga - Muscle does weigh more than fat because less muscle weighs the same as more fat. A pound of each, obviously weighs the same, because that’s how you’re measuring it. But if you were to measure in something like, cubic centimeters. Less muscle would weigh more than more fat.
guest
i was going to say die but i realized that if i got fat, its not like i’d put a gun to my own head.

If I didn’t have my son, I’d choose to die. I’d only live with being overweight b/c I’d want to be around for him.

wow it’s so sad how many people would die over something as pathetic as vanity. what the hell is wrong with society?

wow. these answers seem so shallow to me. there are so many of you out there that would rather die than be overweight. it seems to me you must not have very good lives to begin with to so easily throw them away. i’m actually appalled by the answers. being overweight does not change who you are just changes the way you look. sorry to all you skinny people who things a little flab is the end of the world.

In context of the “House” episode, if one were in the same position, therapy might be an excellent option aside from any medical issues.
We are a veritable modern Roman Spectacle in this country, wanting our food thawed and served fast, preferably by a low wage slave. We don’t even care if the nutritional value is zero, because we don’t have time to think about it. If it were not so, we wouldn’t be experiencing the horrible weight percentage we do and the garbage food companies would soon go out of business. The message is double edged. Eat McDonald’s and Wendy’s, drink Coca Cola, buy frozen microwaveable crap and eat Frito Lay, but be buff and beautiful and fame-spectacular at the same time. It’s all so damn shallow and in the end, self-defeating and horribly unrealistic.
It’s not going to end any time soon, though. We want our cake and double sliced too…with an extra pound of sugar on top while watching American Idol and dreaming of the Big Time.

@oXSweetAviators@xanga - Yeah, I agree with you that most of the replies are ridiculous. I found it surprisingly crazy that so many women replied that they would rather die. I’d rather a full-figured woman that can prioritize things. Life > Skinny

It depends on the situation – my quality of life, how overweight I would be, would I be able to lose the weight eventually, what would my lifespan be if I chose to live…
It’s a toss up really. But I would probably choose life. Probably.

guest
living overweight considering I’ve done it for the 16 years of my life,
and the fact that I can change that aspect of me.
guest
@Lord_of_the_Pixie_stix@xanga - Yeah…my comment really wasn’t meant to be as mean as it turned out to be… Part of it was just annoyance at people who are self conscious about being rather big but don’t do anything about it (my brother) and/or can’t stick to diets or make the necessary changes to their life/convenience in order to lose weight, and then part of it was irritation at myself because i want to slim down a bit but can never stick to the proper routine necessary to make any significant change.
And for that matter I hate anorexia more than i hate obesity (anorexia, not anorexics). Just cuz once they’re fit, it seems like it’d be easier for formerly obese people to hang on to a slimmer weight because they look better than for anorexics to hang on to a more healthy weight because they weight more and look bigger especially due to their skewed self-images, not to mention it’s tough enough to get over the psychological part of it, since it’s not that hard to eat more, physically anyway.
Which again leads me to say that I’d rather live overweight than die thin. Especially if the latter was due to a steamroller.
guest
I believe this is what is called catch 22…I might choose to live, depending on how overweight I was.
guest
what kind of illness would make you stay overweight foreverr..

You are all forgetting OR not knowing in the first place that Xanga has a lot of Eating Disordered Women and Some Men. There are also people who do not have diagnosed eating disorders but who still struggle immensely with weight and food concerns.
THAT is why the comments say they rather die thin.
guest
@insert_label_here_003@xanga - Xanga has a large proportion of Eating Disordered people. That’s all.

@cherrypopstar@xanga - sure sure i understand that. But that really had nothing to do with your original comment or mine. You were just making a generalization about overweight people. Forget it.

as i’m getting older, i’m starting to realzie more and more that HAPPINESS DOESN’T COME FROM SIZE. a girl will NEVER be happy with her size, and if she can’t learn to love the way she is made, however she is, then she will NEVER be satisfied. period.
i have lots of curves and boldness in my body, and for a long time i hated myself fully for it. i thought, God i’m so disgusting, i just want to kill myself. why was i born so different, so gross and unloveable? i wouldn’t believe people when they told me i was beautiful… but now, my heart is changing and i’m beginning to truely love ME, and it makes me really, really happy. i’m more confident and don’t care how others think of me, but how i feel.
so, i’m answering this question with another:
as long as your happy, does it even fucking matter?
guest
So many of the people that commented this are eating disordered.
I would rather die then be overweight, but then again, I’m disordered.

i once waterfasted for 5 days at a time, to lose weight. i honestly would rather die thin than live over weight.. i mean that’s what I’m doing now, and at one point it made me suicidal. so yeah, we’re all gonna die sooner or later, i want to be so thin when i die<3
guest
@kiwi_greenie@xanga - Are you joking? 124 is overweight to you? I’ll tell you now I am 5’2″ (fairly short) and about 115 pounds. I look GREAT. And if I gained 10 pounds I would not look much more different. Now take that proportionally, to someone of average height. More Height, more pounds. Where BMI is notoriously known for overstepping estimations and classifying more people overweight than is accurate, THE CALCULATION STILL CLASSIFIES A WOMAN OF AVERAGE AMERICAN HEIGHT AS NORMAL WEIGHT AT 124, AND EVEN STILL FOR SOMEONE OF SHORTER HEIGHT SUCH AS MYSELF. By judging how YOUR body for its weight you are in turn setting a standard, and I thus feel personally insulted by your statement.
Not to mention, 109 for the average woman’s build is sickly underweight. That’s not fat you’re lacking, it’s muscle.
guest
Honestly? I’m trying to lose weight right now. I’ll probably never be thin, because of my genes and the way my body is, but once I get to a healthy weight, I would probably be chronically depressed if I ever regained it all it again. Living in an overweight body isn’t fun, especially at 16.
But, if there was no way I could lose the weight, and I had to choose being thin and dying, or being alive and being how I am, I’d choose life.

I can’t honestly decide. Skinny probably, yes I feel horrible for saying this but gaining weight scares me[being totally honest here].
