Everyone’s favorite 80′s hair accessory, the scrunchie, is making a comeback.
American Apparel is now selling the elastic poufies in all colors.
Each AA scrunchie costs $6.
Would you wear a scrunchie? Is this trend hot or not?

personally dont like em.
guest
ughh no..I wouldn’t buy them lol
daisy / 630 posts
NOOOOO! they’re hideous.
guest
Haha I have a thin one! It’s pretty!!! but it’s too thin to look like a legit scrunchie.
guest
Not, except on little kids.
guest
ugly ass things should have stayed in the eighties
guest
why in the world would you pay $6 for an ugly scrunchie?
dahlia / 2942 posts
I don’t like 80s and I’m sad they’re coming back.
guest
Woof.
guest
I don’t like them much
orchid / 222 posts
I think it’s cute in the first picture, as there’s just one.
I don’t like the second style though, whats the point of wearing five at once?
daffodil / 1601 posts
Lame.
guest
Not hot. I wouldn’t let my kid wear it either. I think I had one when I was a kid.
guest
NOPE. They look weird unless they’re on kids.
magnolia / 1296 posts
i used to love them as a kid.
now they’re just soo…. not. hahaha
and $6? i would never pay that much.
guest
Scrunchies should be burned.
guest
I wore em 15 years ago. I don’t think I’ll be bringing out my old scrunchies anytime soon.
guest
Scrunchies are for your childhood… when you don’t know any better, and that’s it!
guest
Man, I never really had a chance to wear them as a kid.
I might buy one (not from AA; from somewhere cheaper!) and wear it on “off” days when I need a colourful pick-me-up.
guest
They’re not worth buying at any price – you can make them for super cheap. Take a 24″ strip of fabric and stitch the long sides together with the right side in, then turn it inside-out so the pretty side is outward and the stitches are on the inside. Then use a safety pin to thread a short piece of elastic (wide enough to fit around your wrist with a little overlap) through, tie the ends in a knot, then sew the ends of the fabric together. Voila.
guest
Scrunchies are useful to pull your hair back or whatever. I hate rubber bands.
guest
wow thats pricey for a* scrunchy
i personally like scrunchies but those neon colours are too bright for my liking
rose / 855 posts
Did I miss something? I thought scrunchies have been cool forever? Ah, oh well.
daffodil / 1540 posts
they remind me of ’80s it girls and overworked moms.
so, no.
guest
*cough* YUCK ~
dahlia / 2382 posts
@depp_and_meaningful@xanga - Exactly. I’d rather use a scrunchie that those. They pull your hair out.
I forgot the name of it but does anyone remember in the 90s when they had a playset where you made your own scrunchies with the elastic band & the cloth tubes? It was a toy thing. I had one. It was cool though! I didnt think of it until I saw this!
If you do wear a scrunchie, I’d get a satin one. They dont pull out or dry out your hair. My hair dresser told me that when I was a kid.
guest
noooooooooooooooo!
guest
As one who was lucky enough to make it through that particular phase without getting arrested by fashion 911, I will have to stick with my knee-jerk reaction to the scrunchie: EW.
guest
i love scrunchies! i still wear them. sometimes i wear them like a bracelet too. i think they’re pretty cute.
guest
HAHAHA… why is the early 90s back with a vengeance?!
guest
not.
guest
definitely not and why would you pay $6 for one? I am pretty sure you can get 6 in any color you want at the dollar store for $6.
guest
thats like asking if butterfly clips are hot or not. butterfly clips are better but scrunchies arent unless they revamp it.
magnolia / 1369 posts
$6 … for one ?!
you can get like 10 of them for $2 at Wal Mart
oh and the answer to your question is a fuck no.
rose / 807 posts
I totally made my own scrunchies in sewing class…cheap cheap cheap to make!
um… i still wear scrunchies when i work out.
cherry blossom / 37 posts
Scrunchies are better for your hair, though.
guest
ewwww. unless you’re going to bed or it’s on a kid that’s 5 or under. It’s like crocs. No one really likes them, but everyone will probably wear them.
guest
i like them
guest
Nooooooooo, we’re not that far away from the 80′s to be able to “bring them back”.
guest
Nope.
hydrangea / 51 posts
would i wear a scrunchie out in public? no freaking way. do i own any? yes. they’re just so darn handy. especially because it takes ages to straighten my hair to make it look presentable (an amount of time that i measure in hours) so wearing a scrunchie to bed with a loose, high ponytail makes it easy for me to wake up without crazy bedhead, and that way i don’t have to spend extra time in the mornings re-styling. ta-da!
guest
If that is an AA add… they fail.
guest
Not.
guest
uh…no! esp. not at 6$
guest
I like them, but I wouldn’t wear them unless for a football/baseball game (team colors lol)
guest
I only wear them to the gym
guest
yes for putting your hair up on lazy days, no for fashion.
guest
I wouldn’t be caught dead in those.
guest
no way, I’d feel like a five year old.
orchid / 179 posts
haha i have a bunch already.
left over from being a kiddie=]
guest
Aww, what’s with all the hate?
I’ve always worn scrunchies. Not because of any fad, but just because my hair rejected anything else.
If I wear regular bands in my hair, it gets tangled and ouch and urgh.
Scrunchies are kinder to me. ): I didn’t know they looked so horrible…?
But still. Six dollars? I get a dozen for that price. XD
guest
Oh, I totally would. I’m all about the 80′s, and bright colors. YES YES YES
magnolia / 1354 posts
I use to love wearing them as a kid. I actually still have many of those scrunchies left. But I don’t wear them and won’t wear them either. I have had days where I feel like I should wear one to be random and different…but as soon as I put it in my hair I take it out. So, I don’t hate them but I don’t love them either.
It’s weird that they are making a come-back…not sure how this trend is going to catch on, but hey, weirder things have happened.
guest
hahaha my mom wears them everyday
sunflower / 408 posts
part of me says, “no way, the scrunchies died out in the early to late ninties” and another part of me says, “go ahead, bring them back.” so really, i find myself pretty iffy on this hot or not post. there is no way i’d pay six dollars for a scrunchie when i could wait and purchase a neon colored one at a grocery store for half of the price they were selling it for. but i honestly think i would wear it when i pull my hair back on sundays or weekdays when i work on my homework in my boxer shorts/plain tees. its one of those items like a ponytail holder that you wear on your wrist for those “times in need” when your hair is driving you crazy. scrunchies are just bigger and more colorful than regular ponytail holders. so if anything, they’ll be a different alternative for a ponytail holder that almost everyone uses on a daily basis anyways.
guest
not. they look awful on me anyways since my hair is so thin.
guest
scrunchies need to stay in the past. and paying $6 for that piece of crap is just straight stupid.
I think i’d mock someone if I saw them buying one for $6. seriously.
guest
Not, not, not.
The first girl has a pretty profile, though.
sunflower / 327 posts
ew.
guest
no. we still have a ridiculous amount of those at home because my mom has super thick hair and still uses them. i however stopped wearing them once i was given the option of what to use as a hair tie.
guest
I would, if my hair grows long enough. but not that puffy.
guest
I would only wear them when I’m not in public.
guest
I think they can be fine. $6 is ridiculous, though. You can get a whole bunch for less than a dollar elsewhere.
guest
I think it’s a trend when your like 5…
guest
American Apparel also sells tons of other things no one buys . . .
guest
Not. They don’t do as good of a job at holding hair in place as the plain elastic ones and they look silly. I don’t know why anyone would pay $6 for one, either.
sunflower / 271 posts
@EcstasyBliss@xanga - took the words outta my mouth
guest
Some things really should stay in the 80′s.
guest
they are ugly but when im stressed out i like to make them
but then they just go to waste so yyea let it come back and all the dumb people that wear them can buy them from me! Do I hear a buck fifty anyone?
orchid / 227 posts
I wouldn’t wear them.
guest
it’s okay, but it’s not that nice looking
guest
omg .. scrunchies = when i was 5 , not hottttt atm.
guest
They hold my hair in place, no complaints from me here.
guest
I wouldn’t wear them but I think they might look cute on some girls. Why do they always have to bring the past back, can people not think for themselves and create new ideas???
guest
What a lame trend to start. No one cares about effin’ scrunchies. xD
guest
im sure it could cool cool if you wore it right but… i dunno…
guest
a trend back in the 90′s!!!
guest
I use to wear them a lot….now I dont know where all of mine went.
cherry blossom / 41 posts
Shoot. Why are those happening again ?
guest
They’re a little too obnoxious. And not worth $6 each. Not.
guest
i probably still have one. i wear it when i want to.
guest
Maybe I would wear them for an 80′s theme? Other than that, i’m sticking to elastic hair bands.
tulip / 7 posts
American Apparel is just trying to make the statement “We’re so fucking cool that we can convince people that just because we sell it, it’s cool.”
I really really dislike American Apparels style/philosophy, but I do enjoy their clothing.
guest
eew.
guest
eh they’re okay.. they’re just not scrunchy enough sometimes, never stays in my hair.
guest
haha maybe if I was dressing up for an 80s theme? otherwise definitely wouldn’t wear it on a regular basis
guest
I use scrunchies when I need to pull my hair from my face into a poofy bun or something. My hair has loads of volume so it tends to hide most of the weirdness that a scrunchy brings. The elastic hair bands always snag and tangle in my hair, so I tend to just stick with clips or a single scrunchy.
Can be very lame and 80′s or can be a nice subtle accessory to those of us with fluffy hair.
guest
why do ppl hate them so much?! ..i used to looove scrunchies when i was little ..i remember seriously looking for one! i wear scrunchies at home cuz they’re easier on my head (: and they’re really not thaat ugly ..i just have a simple red, brown, and white one that my mom bought me.
guest
OMFG! I am NOT paying 6 dollars for something I can get at a drug store for like 1..and it comes in a pack of 6 XD
but..no..they are NOT!
guest
I wouldn’t wear those ones.
But I have a couple cute ones =]
guest
not really .. it’s cute on little kids tho.
guest
CHYEAH they’re always hot ! Freakin’ awesome things those are.
guest
When used correctly and not overly sized, they can be acceptable, but generally speaking I agree with others…when you’re a little kid and don’t know any better.
And definitely not for $6. That second picture is wearing like $30 of nonsense hair accessories at this point. Not worth it.
guest
no longer hot
sunflower / 490 posts
jap girls look really nice with scrunchies though.
i personally cant pull it off without looking too old (grandmalike)=/
guest
i used to wear them.. 8 years ago.
hydrangea / 90 posts
It’s not like it’s in style. You could possibly still use it to tie up your hair and all, but that’ll be it.
guest
Still not. I was glad to see them go. I saw the adds for them and gaged. Some things from the 80′s never need see the light of day again.
guest
Who’d pay $6 for a scrunchy?
They’re kind of cute but I don’t think the 2nd picture works.
I’d stick to a black scrunchy.
daisy / 661 posts
i wouldn’t wear them
guest
I never noticed what was so bad about them. I just keep wearing them if I have ‘em because they tie my hair up. That’s what they’re for, right? lol. picky ladies.
guest
Of course American Apparel is selling them. I think they’re cute, but they remind me a lot of elementary school- when they were still in style.
guest
I like them.
guest
I have short hair and I never put it up so no.
But I guess they could look alright on some people.
guest
haha i think they’re alright. it works well when you’re at home and you dont need all the hair hanging in front of your face.loll but most scrunchies are prob a dollor or a dollar & half.
guest
I like them because they don’t rip my hair out like regular ponytail holders.
guest
6 bucks? no thanks. It’s alright, not too bad.
guest
$6 each??
i could get a pack of five at the dollar store sweetie
guest
my god
six dollars for a scrunchie?!
guest
I use scrunchies on a daily basis. They’re handy.
guest
No thanks.
Give me a thin hair tie that blends in with my hair any day, please.
guest
are they really that bad?
guest
Not
guest
i used to wear them as a child and they used to cost close to nothing
guest
i use them at home where no one can see them. but 6 bucks? no.
orchid / 235 posts
I wear scrunchies over regular rubber bands..but I wear like black, nothing neon or bright. :X
guest
lol, if i have to put my hair up and i have a scrunchie then i’d wear it. no biggie. But I barely put my hair up. I don’t think they’re hideous. I guess it all depends on the person.
orchid / 132 posts
Lmao I don’t know where all my scrunchies went. I used to have them in like every color.
guest
eeek
plain black ones are okay but come ON
guest
ew. My mom loves these things. I always thought they were a little bit weird.
sunflower / 294 posts
HOT HOT HOT! I bought a pair today, as a matter of fact.
