i don’t smoke, but i do love the pictures in this post of the old glamor queens and those long cigs taking a long sexy drag… i’m a horrible person i know, but i think smoking is gross

Smoking is crap!!!!!!! It kills lots of people i hate smokers! Hate is a strong word! I dis-like smokers!

Do you seriously want your lungs full of smoke and eventually full of cancer ?

Smoking… smells, gives you lines around your mouth, can cause cancer (i.e. an early death, not to mention a large bill if you don’t have insurance – great gift to leave your family once you’re gone.) Tell me … how on earth is this “cool”? I agree, it used to be glammed up – but thank God, I think we’ve moved past that and onto reality … and I think even less of Obama now that I know he’s a smoker (which I heard about *after* he was elected… not that I thought much of him to begin with.) Maybe it’s relaxing … but I can’t see how the pros would outweigh the cons. The side effects of smoking … are never cool, so lifting a lighted stick to your mouth … doesn’t automatically “up” your cool quotient. ::sigh:: I hope the next generation sees this stupid thing wiped out…

i do smoke. and i hate it. starting to smoke was a bad step in my life. now it’s really hard to stop, but im trying.the only way to stop smoking is not to start at all.and dont go and tell everybody that it looks cool. coz it isnt.girls who smoke look bad. its funny coz im one of them.

I never ever thought smoking was cool.
Someone once said cigarettes look good in photos. I somewhat agree. It SOMETIMES looks good in photos. Other times, it looks slutty. ><
I think swaggering girls holding bottles of alcohol in photos looks a very trashy and unbecoming though.

But overall, it’s still a person’s choice! (as long as they are old enough). It is absolutely their right.

it looks cool if your an idiot!  I love laughing at those addicted smokers all huddling together in sub zero degree weather for their smoke break.  Or those cheap ass smokers who actually check out the butts on the floor to see if its still smokeable.  Or those who stay stupid crap like smoking calms me, staves away my hunger,.. yah you idiot,.. cuz ur addicted!  Crack addicts get a real calm after their hit and yes get the munchies when their off the stuff.

The coolest image and i swear on my life that I’m not making this up,.. is the guy that i took care of in the hospital,.. he was on one to one care because he was very disruptive and a little psycho… we didn’t know if the radiation to his head was had crazed him or if he had something we call “diprivan on the brain.”  I watched him night shift and at 2am in the morning he demanded that we let him go outside to smoke,.. we told him no,. he went crazy yelling  ” I’M ALREADY DYING FOLKS, YOU CAN’T HELP ME, HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO GIVE UP A 3PACK A DAY HABIT AND DEAL WITH ALL THIS CHEMO!!  I JUST WANT THIS TO BE OVER WITH!!”  I felt horrible for him, we had to call the doctors and tell him a million times why we couldn’t bring him outside till 7am…he stayed up and waited. So cool.

I really don’t even care what your true intentions for writing this post because it still sends the wrong message to people,..especially those vulnerable young people on xanga.  And 20yrs from now when someone is in deep shit cuz if this cool habit, that one line disclaimer of yours will mean nothing.

And btw,.. what do you think about cocaine use, or heroin use.  At one time those use to be legal, and even when they were illegal, when they use to be expensive to obtain it was the cool drug to the elites.  Why don’t you write a post about this. real sexy.

It might look cool at first, but is it really worth it? They smell bad (nothing attractive about that), they make your teeth and lips and fingers turn colours and wrinkle and it makes nonsmokers really uncomfortable. I’ve been recently inspired by OXYGEN Magazine. I am not into have a body that look’s like a mans, but wouldn’t it be “cool” if our strange ideals for beauty went in that direction instead?

@Deliver_Me_123@xanga - I meant my disclaimer 100%. I don’t smoke,  and I would discourage people from smoking, and it’s basically the most unhealthy and dangerous thing you can do to your own body.

I was simply commenting about the image associated with smoking (e.g. in Mad Men) and that i think it imparts some kind of glamour and cool factor.

Like i said in the post, it is NOT cool to harm your body like that, though.

You can eat right, exercise, and take your vitamins but you’re still gonna die.  In fact, chances seem pretty good these days that’ll you’ll die from some form of cancer, so you might as well dig your own grave and look cool doing it.

k. obama looks totally lame smoking a cig. seriously. the girls all look great (i’m tempted to exclude kate moss though…) and the other guy just looks normal.

I know smoking is gross and horrible….but in movies….some characters just make it look enticing. I would never smoke because I despise the smell and taste and all, but well…as much as I hate to admit it, the movie smokers get me.

When I see a smoker in real life though I glare and roll my eyes. It’s not cool “in real life”.

I do think it looks cool to do it. I used to, but it honestly did nothing for me. I’d much rather smoke the reefer, at least that has a good side effect. Haha!

Plus, when I was smoking cigarettes, it got harder for me to breathe and I now have asthma, so I quit altogether.

Smoking looks totally cool, if you make it look cool.  Just like anything else…like skinny jeans.  I, for example, could not, for the life of me, look cool in them.

Not everyone who smokes will die of lung cancer or get sick from it.  Not everyone who smokes even inhales the smoke.  That said, it’s only a potential health risk.  I wish people would stop trying to scare us out of smoking.  Help others make an informed decision, not one made out of fear.

I’m a smoker, and I agree that the IMAGE of smoking in pictures looks cool.  It’s not cool to smoke, and it’s not cool to get the health problems with smoking, but I see where you’re going with this.  Just ignore the people telling you to write posts about heroin and cocaine addictions.  They can’t possibly even start to even be as simple as a nicotine addiction.  I was addicted to heroin for 2 years… I know this stuff.  What DOESN’T look cool is pictures of half naked women as their profile picture.  That just SCREAMS slut.

i made a post about smoking (women in particular) and i stand by my opinion.

smokers stink like hell, they have the grossest lungs, die sooo ungracefully, and smokers kill people. that said, smoking is UNCOOL.

Wouldn’t those people have looked just as cool/hot WITHOUT the cig???  Replace those “hot” people with pics of scrawny, wrinkled hags with yellowed teeth and black fingernails and I think the definition of “cool” would change.

It’s bee proven that companies paid young actors to smoke in the golden age of hollywood to generate publicity for their cigarettes. Ever wonder why so many people from the 30s-60s movie era died of cancers?

@gottalovebeauty@xanga - I agree with you. Smokers are trying to do it everywhere & that I disagree with, even before I was diagnosed with asthma. Everyone has a right to clean air AND yes smokers have a right to smoke in a ventilated sectioned off space but they shouldnt get additional breaks. That’s not fair. People at work petition for smoke breaks. Why should you get an extra 15 break? Just go on your regular break time!

I agree that -if done right- smoking has a very glamorous image. It takes poise, confidence, and practise to pull off that knowledgeable drag and to hold a fag at juuuust the *right* angle.

The one superficial thing turning me off from smoking, however, is the smell. Can’t stand that. Must be why it’s so wildly successful in the pictures – that’s one place that people can’t smell the burning chemicals.

But yes. Very cool. As long as pictures like the second, third, fourth, and fifth up there are in circulation, the smokes companies will always have a willing consumer population of weak-minded individuals who associate glamour with cigarettes.

yeah, it looks cool. I always wanted to smoke, as a kid, but the knowledge that it’s bad for you was beat over and over into my head, so now I don’t smoke. Still have that little urge to, but since it’s obvious how bad they are for you, I never will.

Smoking is disgusting. I personally don’t think it looks cool at all to smoke. I myself an a smoker, and I hate it. I feel like a loser every time I smoke one. Smokeing is bad and you don’t want to start it at all. I wish I had never started, and I wish I could stop. It’s gross, and I DO NOT recommend it.

smoking is completely uncool. sure it’s glamorous in movies, but in real life, your hair, skin, breath and clothes stink of it, the skin on your fingers and under your nails becomes discolored, and the effects on your whole mouth and sometimes even your voice are horrendous.

it’s funny to me that smoking is endorsed as the cool thing to do in movies and on tv, especially for teens, because all the teenagers i know who smoke are the last thing from cool. maybe it’s just my area?

Admittedly, it has a pretty cool image. However, the fact that cigarette companies put things such as nicotine in them to keep you coming back for more whether you really want to or not deters me. If smoking remained a legitimate personal choice throughout, I’d be more inclined, but the fact that smoking will eventually be against my better judgment, I have to give it a thumbs down.

I don’t smoke – - never have, but that’s just a personal choice (I figured I have enough problems without adding one more to them)! I do believe that it was deemed much more glamourous in the golden age of movies and TV, before the health risks were common knowlege and the stigma of looking calm, cool and collected was the way to be. Nowadays, the old stimas have faded away and smoking has become totally taboo and generally looked down upon my many. How the times do seem to have changed….

maybe it’s because i saw someone close to me die a slow death due to cigarettes.. or maybe i just have common sense or something.. but i don’t think smoking is cool. never will think so. it’s completely unattractive to me, no matter who’s holding a smoke.

Wow, this has actually been something that has come up with my boyfriend recently.
He keeps telling me that him starting to smoke is bound to happen because it relaxes him and whatnot. I’ve told him many times how i feel about smoking, yet he still doesn’t seem to think anything of it.  Honest, but maybe a little bit harsh, i don’t think i want to be around him when / after he’s been smoking, i especially won’t want to be kissing him.  I think it’s gross, smells bad and does horrible things to your health, and not just your lungs. Your skin yellows, looks old, ruins tastes buds, stains teeth the list goes on.  I don’t see how any of this makes smoking look cool! to me that would look terribly uncool. It’s hard because i’m a non smoker (obviously) and truth be told, i’m actually allergic to something in cigarettes. I don’t know, i just think there are better things people can spend their money on.  Honestly, the looking cool factor is stupid and not worth the cancer and other health problems you’ll encounter in the future.
I think the thing that makes me really mad and think to myself  ” Seriously? you really think you look cool doing something thats going to make you age and smell and look like crap when your older?”  Is that some people do smoke just for the fact of looking cool, or ‘cuz it relaxes them. I think that it’s stupid and there are so many other options that are better for you than this.

Might look cool, but getting numerous health problems later on in life is definitely not cool.  I quit smoking for a while now, and look healthier in general.

Smoking does look cool when done right.

When I step out for my morning cigarette in my pajamas and messy hair, I do not look cool. But when I have my hair done up right, with glam make up and sleek clothes, taking long drags and standing with the right posture, it changes the whole image.

Everyone is getting so up in arms about cigarettes. People that don’t smoke or quit seem to be the ones who get all hot and bothered about it. Us smokers just want to be left alone to enjoy our cigarettes.

It’s not always an addiction. I’ve gone days, weeks, months without a cigarette. I enjoy smoking. And on top of that, I’ve never had even a sip of alcohol, I don’t do drugs and I’m married, meaning I’m in a completely monogamous relationship. Don’t you think I’m allowed my one vice?

Ugh no. I hate hate hate cigarettes. My father, grandfather and even my boyfriend smokes. He feels awful about it and has cut down significantly since we met but I don’t let him smoke around me. No offense to anyone who smokes but I think it can look really trashy when women smoke. I get really frustrated when I can’t kiss my bf because he reeks of cigarettes and especially when I come home smelling like them. I just think the world would be alot better without them.

It does look cool, especially when people exhale. I love the smell, too, especially on my hair when I’m done.

Done right, it can also look classy, though most of the time quite trashy. Put bluntly, you have to be a thin smoker to look cool while doing it. The other catch is that it only looks cool on young people, and young people are more likely to get addicted for life, and then look gross when they’re old. (Hah, that’s so vain, but I guess it’s what the question asked about.)

I wish I liked smoking cigarettes because I’ve heard it’s calming, but I really don’t enjoy it at all. I think I’ve smoked a total of four cigarettes since I’ve been able to buy them, and that’s probably all I’m going to do… I go with the “we all die eventually” philosophy, though, so the health risk part has less of an affect on me, I would say.

I’m TOO COOL to smoke

I think it’s glam. Obviously cancer is not. Plenty of things are considered cool that aren’t healthy.

I recently quit smoking and find the addiction to be very uncool.  However when I was a much younger girl, I started smoking because I felt as though it completed my rebellious state of being.  I liked looking intelligent, intimidating, and vixen-like… thanks to girls like Angelina Jolie and Marilyn Monroe, smoking seemed like the cool and sexy thing that intelligent and fierce women partake in. 

Once I was fully addicted my reasons for smoking shifted.  It went from a simple social activity to a full on lifestyle.  I was then smoking to rid myself of anxieties in pressing social situations.  In other words, I felt the need to distract myself in given situations where I felt at unease (first dates, confrontations, etc).  As a result, I felt like a giant cigarette huffing coward. 

I quit one month ago and I haven’t smoked since.  Cigarettes/smoking of any kind is not cool.

@ooo_LaUrA_ooo@xanga - My grandfather died of emphysema which is characterized by the loss of lung elasticity.  He lived on an oxygen tank and died once his lungs were fully ripped to shreds.  I witnessed him slowly suffocate during death.  It looked painful, he was choking for air and the blood vessels in his eyes looked like they were bursting.  I agree(d) to your carefree notion of “we’re all going to die anyway”, however I asked myself if the quality of life meant anything to me… then I started thinking differently; this is when I quit smoking.

I don’t fear death and I don’t fear how the onset of my death will unravel.  However, I do care about what I do now that affects how I will be in the future.  I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have fun but I am saying that maybe you should be mindful of anything you may regret later in life.

Honestly, when I watched Sex and the City and I saw Carrie puffing her cigarette in her house, at a restaurant, in Paris, I thought it was the coolest thing! Here’s the catch… I realized I only thought it was cool because people are so against women smoking… And I think that because people are so against women smoking, I think more women should smoke because men do it, why can’t women! I guess it’s a feminist thing. I do smoke and I took my first drag when I was 14! thanks to my dumbass friends who tried to be “cool”. Here I am, 20 and I can’t stop draggin. I hate that I smoke, I wish I never started… But I think I smoke because I want to be opposite of what people think of me… Today my guy friend said I don’t look like a smoker type of girl so I should quit… but that totally makes me want to smoke a whole pack in front of his face!

@ourdystopia@xanga - Yeah, my aunt died of lung cancer that metastasized to her brain, and my grandma died of emphysema. It’s a pretty horrible way to go. It’s probably one of the reasons I tried smoking and didn’t like it, the thought of what it did to my family members. You could die at any instant in a car accident, but that looks way less painful and prolonged.

I think it can be alluring in photography but when it gets down to it, the addiction is not really worth it.

I see smokers freezing their assests off in the sub-zero Minnesota weather every winter and I wonder what people would think if they say it that way instead of the glamour of glossy pages or edited photos on the web.

Sometimes it looks cool. I mean in the movies, yes it’s glamorized or it’s associated with that air of freeness or carelessness or glamour because the woman are beautiful and young. In real life, when you see an aging diner woman or a stressed out mother yelling at her kids, it doesn’t look cool. It really depends.
