Hipster culture is everywhere these days.
What’s a hipster? Think urban skinny kids who listen to indie, wear ironic clothing and try to find other forms of expression outside the mainstream. They shop at thrift stores, vintage websites, and sometimes, though they would never admit it, Urban Outfitters.
Here’s what you need for your hipster look:
Skinny jeans. Bootcut is soooo 90′s. The only pants permissible for a true hipster are so tight they threaten to cut off circulation to your brain.
Jeans, black pants, bright hues – it’s all acceptable, as long as it tapers down to your ankles.
American Apparel T-shirt
Hipsters love American Apparel because it’s sweatshop free and makes shirts that are really tight. You’re going to need a spandex-y white or black tee, or else something with an ironic logo from an 80s TV show.
Cotton/linen Scarf
No matter the season, a hipster will be clad in a patterned scarf. Keffiyah scarves have been hugely popular, though controversial because of their religious implications. Anything checked or plaid will also do. But don’t dare tie it like a prissy Sunday School teacher – let it slouch carefree around your neck.
Converse sneakers
The quintessential hipster footwear. These MUST be dirty and well-worn. If you bought them new, bang them up a bit to insinuate wear. Black is best, hi-tops are better.
Ray-Bans
Tom Cruise’s favorite shades are back in. Embody your hipster irony with a neon pair, or stick to basic black.
And there you have it! You’re ready to hit the streets of Brooklyn for some fair trade coffee and a Grizzly Bear concert.
Do you like hipster style? Are you a hipster?

Hah! I have friends that dress like this.
And honestly, I think it looks pretty ridiculous and too trying-too-hard-ish.

don’t forget plaid button up.

The hipster style is pretty much my main idea of an outfit, it seems ! ahaha I always wear skinny jeans, i just got my new converses and you can’t go wrong with a plain fitted black tee ! A scarf always makes things better, too ahaha
I don’t really like Ray Bans all that much, but otherwise, yeah I’m liking the hipster style :]
guest
Wow… lol. This sounds like my everyday attire… minus the scarf and raybans.
guest
if you try to look “hipster” you’re not hipster.
I listen to indie, I don’t really like anything mainstream – I have my own style
yet I don’t wear anything like that.
guest
I like scarves because I’m always freaking cold! I tend to dress myself for temperature more than fashion. And unfortunately, I don’t care what anyone says, you can’t always be fashionable and warm. I buy myself nice sweaters, and they’re fashionable enough, but it’s nothing complex and not exactly accessorize-able. But that’s ok. I kind of like having a simple wardrobe. But scarves. I like scarves.
guest
I wear what I wear. It kind of annoys me when people purposely emulate a style.

this is basically the uniform of every boy i met while i was in austria.
guest
haha i like it
but i mean i wear whatever i feel like wearing and all. so idk what exactly i am

hipster style is boring. scarves in summer is stupid.

ew plaid.
i didn’t know there was a style! interesting~
i think we need to blog about chavs next.
guest
people like different styles. but going out of one’s way to “dress like a hipster” is trying way too hard. like: http://www.latfh.com/.

Okay I have no problem with the hipster style I just don’t get it. Like skaters tend to dress skater. They wear brands that come from stores like Zumiez and carry skateboards. This is the same with surfers and snowboarders and prepps. Though the prepps don’t usually carry some kind of board. Scene and emo kids have reputations of being around others like them. Same with athletes and artists. But what is a hipster??? I don’t get it. The style can fit in most everywhere. Almost everyone I know owns at least one pair of skinny jeans. They sell them everywhere in many different styles. Hot Topic has them and so does Hollister. The ones at Hot Topic mostly are bright colors and have patterns on them and the ones at Hollister are blue and some are ripped. And everyone wears converse. I have a few pairs and so does like just about everyone else I know. I would never wear the scarf but I don’t think I have that much of an issue with it. Seeing a group of people wearing them might bug me but if someone wears one once in a while I dont think I’d have a problem with it. I don’t feel like commenting about the rest of the look because they are all things I’ve seen in many different styles too. I think the hipster style is not a bad one but I don’t understand exactly WHO would be wearing it. And thinking about who I’ve seen dressed like a hipster I don’t recall ever seening hipsters ever in a group of other hipsters. Its like a style of one person by themself in a group of other people with a different style.

mmmm plaid. 8D

Alright. I’m guilty of wearing skinny jeans, v-necks, Chuck Taylors, flannel, vests, scarves, fedoras… whatever. And liking some indie music.
The funny thing is, though–I fucking hate goths, emo kids, scenes, AND hipsters. The whole hipster scene is pretentious, although they have okay style.
It’s not even really their style, though, is it? It’s made up of basic, stylish clothing that you can buy anywhere from Hollister to Wet Seal to F21 to Hot Topic. Almost everyone has at least one pair of skinny jeans, for instance.

Of these, I like the belted plaid shirt, but I am no going to buy one unless I find it for $1.00 or something. and if I see another chick in Uggs with a wool/cashmere scarf around her neck I am going on a lamb murder spree.
I am too old to be a hipster and if I was young enough, I still wouldn’t be a hipster b/c it sounds like something Frank Sinatra would be and like he is for old people and I would be young.
@MissPixieGlitter@xanga - that site made my day.
guest
I do like the hipster style a lot
Though I wouldn’t describe my own style as ” Hipster” . My style is eccentric ,creative and quirky .
guest
I wouldn’t say I am.. Yet I own everything on that list =/
guest
I love converse ! I think I’m kind of a hipster.
guest
The hipster fashion makes me want to throw up.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - i’m glad you liked it.

i HATE skinny jeans, i think they make people look weird. i’m for bell bottoms, the bigger the better! i love plaid button up shirts and converse though! or just a plain tshirt or tank top. not much into scarves either. i like them, but i just dont wear them. never tried on sunglasses like that either, so a i’m a little unsure bout them too. i have a few qualifications but i can never be an authentic hipster. shucks.
guest
Hate skinny Jeans and keffiyehs
LOVE RAY BANS.
orchid / 119 posts
i’d skip the scarf.
i like the hipster for their simplicity in each item of clothing but the complex look the pull off.
guest
I LOVE SKINNY JEANS. LOVE BIG SUNGLASSES. LOVE CONVERSE. LOVE SCARVES. LOVE INDIE MUSIC. but i dont put myself into any cultures. that’s just stupid. i just wanna be original.
guest
lol. i dress like this. haha.
guest
Gee, sorry some of us don’t look THAT great in skinny jeans…
Actually, a lot of people look weird to me when they where skinny jeans.

Hipsters are all ready on the way out. I was never a huge fan of it, but I shared subtle similarities in certain areas of fashion.
You know the original hipsters are done and over with it when a guide like this comes out and the hipster culture hit mainstream.
guest
Ha, the only thing that I am missing are the Ray-Bans, which I was actually wanting to get because I had borrowed a friend of mines while taking goofy pics, and I actually like how they look on me. Maybe I was born to dress like a hipster… =P
dahlia / 2942 posts
I call this indie. And yes, I’ve seen it. It works for some people. SOME.
guest
i like their fashion, i can honestly say that i have most of the things that are listed on this entry. however, i’m not trying to put down those who wants to try this style and i don’t like how other people condemn someone if they want to dress a certain way or not
cherry blossom / 37 posts
You can’t say that hipsters find things/listen to/wear clothes that aren’t mainstream. NEWSFLASH: being a hipster is VERY mainstream.
And I don’t really care for the style, and especially the attitude that goes along with it.
guest
trying to “dress like a hipster” is just pathetic. when i read this post and comments like “OMGzz! that is lyke so totallyyy how i dresss1!!”, all i think is “tool”. not to mention, hipster is kind of a derogatory term for the subculture you’re referring to. way to be awesome.
guest
haha sounds like me minus the rayban and scarf and converse..
guest
I think I dress mildly like a hipster. Even though I’d like my style to be seen as unique, I just can’t help that I like some of the hispter essentials mentioned here.
guest
yesterday I watched must love dogs
guest
that style is totally popular in france and england…i live in france and well most of the kids dress like that ;]
guest
i think everyone owns at least one thing from this list, but this style is overrated and overdone. it’s time for something new. hipster isn’t even hipster anymore. it’s become popular culture, and pop culture is never good…
guest
I hate the hipster style. I have tried on skinny jeans but they dont look good and I HATE THEM!!! Alot of germans wear them. They are definitely in style here.
guest
@anorexique_xo@xanga - haha AGREED!
guest
I fucking hate this post.
Converse aren’t for “HIPSTERZ” you’re a douche bag!!!!!!
Indie music makes me want to shove something sharp and dangerous into my ear canal.

i loooove ray bans and american apparel, but that’s it.

every time i see a hipster in nyc. i just want to smack them in the head. they always look greasy and nasty and they always act like they’re so much more fashionable when they wear the same shit every day. they’re all really trying too hard..ngod.. the word hipster just pisses me off.. *Barf*

pic number 6 definitely looks like Emma Watson <3. just saying.
and scarves when it isn’t cold are retarded. and if you dress like this to dress like this, you’re a tool. get a personality.
guest
I totally wore all that shit before it was in style. Well, other than the skinny jeans–I can’t stand ‘em. But I am a huge fan of American Apparel t-shirts, but their logos are usually the indie bands I listen to. I freaking love plaid shirts, though.
rose / 770 posts
I like this style… kind of
guest
I think there are ways to wear any of these items and not be hipster or whatever.
For ex, skinny jeans!!! I have short legs so I can’t wear flares etc…
everyone has their Ray Bans right now. Except I don’t spend more than $30 on sunglasses, so I don’t.

Ohmigosh! I inadvertently dress like a hipster!
guest
duly noted.
my school is composed 95% of hipsters, so now I know what to look for if i want to fit in.
guest
Dude I love all the stuff you just wrote!
guest
i like it ^_^
guest
I like some of the hipster clothes (: But I’m not a hipster. I kinda like the skinny jeans, but not a big fan. I used to hate them. I like to stick to whatever I want to wear and what looks nice (:
guest
I’m not a hipster and I wear pretty much all these things daily. Plus band t-shirts, leather jackets, vintage jewelry, large rings, etc.
guest
I love this post, because hipsters are all on their high-horses because everyone else is sheep while they have the “courage” to be “nonconformists”. But when you look the same as all the rest of the hipsters, then you become a conformist. You’re just conforming to a smaller subset of people. Doesn’t make them better than anyone else, like many of them seem to think.
Sorry about my rant, but I got to a school with a huge population of hipsters, and most of them are huge douchebags. They just stay under the radar, so girls don’t realize they’re douchebags. And the girls’ attitudes are very much a turnoff. All in all, it’s a very annoying subculture to me. Why can’t they just like clothes and music because it’s good rather than feeling the need to have to enjoy music because it’s not mainstream. Not all mainstream music is bad, and not all underground music is good.
guest
LOVE THIS POST! hahaha. its awesome.
i definitely do not fit into any one category as i love hippie, indie, and oldies music.
i also am a health nut, gym rat, & drug bum =) how ironic.
so no, def no hipster, but ive got some of those clothes! i think we should all just be ourselves and a melting pot of everything we like/enjoy!
orchid / 202 posts
it’s cute but to label yourself as a “hipster” just takes away from the whole idea itself… to go out of your way to look like you don’t care (see scarf example). irony?
guest
Ow man, Im a hipster >.< I always thought it was my own style beacsue rarely you fine ANYONE in Colorado Springs wearing stuff like that. Maybe more people downtown but I dont live there so all I see is Jordan’s and Nike’s and big overs sized t-shirts. </3
All of those I own but dont forget about Vans and Leggings!
guest
skinny jeans, converses & big sunglasses <3
but i do not look hipster at all haha
orchid / 187 posts
@raiyaya@xanga - thats a really good way to put it. Just bc u like certain items doesnt mean u have to brand yourself with a label “hipster”. I hate when people try to define their style into a label like “hip hop”, “preppy”, “scene”. That’s so high school to me, just be who u are.
guest
I dress like that sometimes.
I guess I’m only a hipster on those days though.
guest
I don’t fit into the hipster category, but I think it is cool.
My one critique is guys in skinny jeans
no thank you!
guest
Ack skinny jeans/Ray Bans don’t work for me. :l I don’t wear American Apparel either — just regular screen tee’s. I have the scarves and Converse though. I guess I’m half hipster ’cause the jeans/AA are the most crucial parts of the style. Oh well. My twist on things. XD
guest
i like some hipster clothes. i like a little bit of everything, though, so i don’t think that makes me a hipster.
guest
people wear what they like, sometimes it ends up looking hipster
guest
the scarf… i hate that look
guest
I was really.really hoping this post was sarcastic.
God. I hate AA/UO.
guest
Umm… I already wear this… minus the raybans or scarf. I didn’t know I was called a hipster. Learn something new everyday. A lot of guys and girls wear this look on my college campus so it’s nothing special to me. Just normal everyday wear. I didn’t know it had a special category.
Hmm… I really like the last picture with the green plaid shirt.
guest
Haha this is great. I don’t mind fashion trends and I’m not the kind of person to hate on what’s considered hot and “mainstream”. However what I dislike about this particular fashion group is the snobby element behind most of it.
My scarf and my music makes me look smarter than you!
guest
@MissPixieGlitter@xanga - Haha yes I love that site, and I have always wondered if the person who writes it is a hipster or not, but since no self-respecting hipster will ever admit to actually being a hipster, I will never know
guest
everybody probably owns a pair of skinny jeans. i own everything you just mentioned and several oversized sunglasses. people think my style is preppy. but i listen to urban and alternative. besides all the clothes you mentioned that hipsters own, basically all are just plain and can be easily mixed and matched into any style you wear. but anyway, times change and so does fashion, skinny jeans are a comeback from the eighties, and so are converses. oversized glasses are a celeb thing. but whatever, depends on your sense of style

Hi, can you tell me where you found the picture of the cons? Is it public domain?
Thank you!kylenel@upc.org

I have a pair of converse but I rarely wear them because I constantly trip when I wear them for some reason lol. Other then that most of these things are not really my style. But you will get called a hipster for anything anymore. It’s completely overused at this point.
guest
I find it sad for those people out there who associate themselves with a certain label or call themselves a hipster
guest
I would dress this way, but it’s too mainstream…
XD
guest
I wear what I like– I don’t care what subcultural label is behind it.
guest
this post is too mainstream for me.
