Okay so my hair is Manic Panic’s Hot Hot Pink color and for the longest I’ve been trying to figure out a way to keep it in longer. I had tried everything: (1) Adding vinager (don’t do it, dogs will try to eat you), (2) leaving it to sit over night, and (3) straightening it while the dye was in and nothing worked. It seemed like every other week I was putting dye in. Then one day I remembered what my aunt said may work, mixing hair conditioner and hair dye.
Well it worked! I’ll tell you the steps:
1. Get the hair dye of your choice of any brand (works best with Manic Panic).
2. Get a 8 oz. liquid applicator bottle (it works best for roots but you can also use a cup or bowl).
3. Put as much hair dye in it as you need (leave room for to mix the conditioner) and add some conditioner (make sure it’s not too much).
5. Make sure it has a creamy look to it.
6. Apply it to selected the area and let it sit for a few hours. It won’t damage your hair.
7. Wash it. If you pay attention, you’ll notice there’s barely any dye coming out. That’s because it absorbed it along with the nutrients from the hair conditioner.
8. Final result, it should last a while.

Well, that’s great to know!

OK, fine, it has conditioner in it too – but HOW could having hair dye on your hair for several *hours* before you wash it out NOT hurt your hair? I don’t understand this … it sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I used to work at a Professional Hair Salon and we’ve got different techniques for hair dyeing processes.
Although I’m not so sure about mixing normal conditioner with hair dye, it might cause the hair to fall out, I guess it depends on different people and the condition of their hair, but the best way to make semi – permanent hair color last longer is to use Color treatment shampoo, it allows the hair to soak in and not wash out as easily. Or just do the usual and skip using hair products, and just use conditioner on your hair till about 2 days later. By that time, the color should be set into your hair

it works if you’re a punk rocker and dont care about healthy hair
i rather go to a beauty salon

you should try switching to the brand special effects instead of manic panic.

the manic panic type dyes are NOT like regular dyes
they are vegetable based dyes that are much less harsh and much weaker then normal colour hair dyes
anyway, i’m not the sure the conditioner trick will work with every type of conditioner…manic panic dye sets better in your hair in an acidic environment, so you can either rinse with vinegar or make sure you’re not using a pH balanced conditioner/shampoo

usually to keep the color in:
dont use hot water, buy salon shampoos or go to a beauty supply for colored hair shampoo. store brought shampoos from walmart, target, etc strip away color whether it says for colored treated hair or not
but if u like the red i suggest you use l’oreal hicolor hightlights. its a perm. color so itll stay longer than the semi and it gives a deeper red

it’s bound to fade out… color treated hair shampoo should help out. & washing the hair every other day… i have funky colors on my hair, blue-green, pink & purple. lasted pretty long.. although its fading a bit now. Going to color it again later. after all those colors are semi permanent.

@Passionflwr86@xanga - Manic Panic dye doesn’t work the same way as regular hair dye from the grocery store. It’s a special formula that basically just stains the hair. There isn’t a natural chemical match-up to get hot pink hair, or electric blue. It’s safe to leave in because it doesn’t contain any drying chemicals or formulas like ammonia.
This article doesn’t really apply to most hair dyes, which are specially formulated to work around a certain block of time before becoming damaging. What you did say in this article works extremely well with Manic Panic and Special Effects hair dyes. Thanks for the tips- if I ever feel like putting some funky streaks in my hair again, I’ll take your advice.

Oh! That’s interesting. Also, did you bleach your hair before you dyed it? I find that hair dyes don’t work for my dark hair most of the time..

Coconut is moisturising and aroma is great!

While I agree with this, Manic Panic in general just washes out quickly. Try Special Effects instead.

this may sound dirty, but if you left your hair dirty for about 3 days without a wash so that your natural hair oils can build up, the colour tends to stay longer in your hair too. dun ask why, i wouldn’t know…but it does work

i don’t think mixing conditioner with it will make it last longer.
That would pretty much just thin out the color, so you’re putting less of it on your hair.
I used to use manic panic, and I wold leave it on over night.
I only washed my hair every 2 or 3 days, and in cool water.
It usually lasted me 2 weeks, maybe 2 1/2, , but that’s really all you can expect from semi-permanent color.
and make sure you’re using color care shampoo, and try not to use any products with alcohol in them.

I love suave, in general. it makes my hair smell so nice and it keeps it so so so soft. i love that kind espeically, its the best !

awesome! i have to keep re applying manic panic’s purple haze but ill try this tomorrow. sounds good!

Manic Panic? Puhleeze.
Haha, no really though, it’s a decent hair dye, but my favorite is Punky. It is a lot thicker and has conditioners already in it so that it lasts longer and gives really gorgeous color. I used to have to buy it online, but now that I don’t dye my hair those colors, they have it at Hot Topics around here.

Instead of manic panic try splat ! Nice hair by the way!

This didnt work very well at all. . . . . . . . I dye my hair white with Manic Panic, and this didnt make a difference. And if you only have to re-aply it every other week, your lucky. I have to do it every other day.. For goodness sakes hun.. Its semi-permanant, so you can’t expect it to evoke a permanent color.

I find this tip very helpful.
I’ve been dying my hair since 7th grade(semi perm colors only,I’m a natural blonde, except for now,i just recently bleached my hair.)
My hair is pink purple and blonde

If you’d like a look
I have manic panic’s purple haze in my hair, and all though i didnt do the conditioner trick with the purple it lasts longer than it should.
The pink however is a color jamz 2 (shitty product,i do NOT reccomend buying it,unless your kid is going through one of “those” fazes and MUST have technicolor hair like the other “cool” kids in school,it fades fast and you can hardly tell it was there. It dosnt damage either, its a stain just like manic panic its just a terrible product. ) I did use the conditoner for this one because I adore the pink, and would love if it would stay in. And let me tell you it’s kept it in.
Thank you so very much for this.

@Passionflwr86@xanga - it’s only with “vegetable dye” like directions, manic panic, or my absolute favorite Special effects. They don’t have all the harsh chemicals in them that make the dye more permanent. It WON’T hurt your hair even if you left it in for two days. Many people using these dyes leave them in over night with cling film. I’ve left SE atomic pink in my hair for 8 hours and even though I bleached it out REALLY REALLY badly before hand it was so much softer after. Vegetable dye pretty much acts as a conditioner it’s self. Adding extra conditioner just pulls more colors into the hair folicals. Also rinsing your hair with distilled water and blow drying it before dying opens your folicals more so they absorb more dye.

Manic Panic, Special Effects, Adore, and Ellumen are all direct dyes — meaning they just stain, they don’t use peroxide or ammonia oxidizers (all other dyes are oxidative dyes). This is why they make your skin abnoxious colors too while box-dyes don’t.
I’ve had really good luck with Wella’s Ellumen reds staying put (far far longer than M. Panic, S.Effects, or Adore). Where I put it in is still gleaming shiny candy-apple red a year later, even after dying over it with box-dyes. The Ellumen RR (red red) is candy-apple red with a hint of pinky violet, but they have every shock-color and a red-gold, and a yellow, so you could make literally any color red you want. It works better over virgin or lightly processed hair (stays until you cut it off), and fades a bit quicker on the bleached spots, but still stays.

@Passionflwr86@xanga - if you use manic panic, its a temporary product with no ammonia in it. Hence, you can use it as often as your wallet will allow and it wont cause any damage to your hair. I’ve actually used this product for years with beautiful results. Downside to it, was that it washed out quickly as it was not permanent.

it doesn’t hurt your hair because its just depositing color. It isn’t breaking any of the bonds in the inside of your hair. It will only deposit until your hair can’t hold anymore. Im a cosmetologist, this isn’t my opinion.

It says right in the Splat© hair color that if you want a lighter color to mix with conditioner, AND that it will wash out faster so as far as Splat© goes, I DON”T recommend that! However, when I used to Kool-Aid© paste my hair I always added vinegar to make it semi-permanent. I can’t attest that that would worl with Splat© or any other dye, but experience suggests it
might
. The bleach will help it absorb, so you want to run the vinegar through your har
after you’ve done the bleach and dried it completely. Also, the hair must be completely dry before you add the color. Foils
can be used with the bleach and dye. Splat© is not a direct dye, and has metallic salts. You can bleach with the included bleach
up to two times. NO MORE, or you will seriously damage/melt your hair!
Now, I have absolutely triple processed my hair, but it did melt once. I was using Maxi-Blonde© or Ultra-blue©. It’s happened twice, but depends on the health of the hair. If you process twice, use a hair masque then re-process, I think that’ll help. When all is said and done, use the masque again, and a hot-oil treatment wouldn’t be amiss. Hope this helped. Again, can’t speak for Manic Panic© or Rage©, but Splat + conditioner equals lighter color and lasts less time. Cheers, Amber
P.S. I’m trying to streak my hair like Illyria, from Angel, and just looking for tips. Good luck, everyone!!!!
