My sister and I decided to walk to the grocery store yesterday for some groceries. We ended up paying mainly with one-dollar-bills and a lot of change. I quipped, “We’re in a recession, people!” but we were in self-checkout and there wasn’t a line anyway.
We also had to walk home with six bags of groceries, plus a watermelon. We kept ourselves going by chanting, “We love our planet.” Okay, that sounds silly, but it worked! So maybe we weren’t the most chic girls transporting their groceries home, but we saved on gas money and didn’t contribute negatively to the environment. These little changes can make a big difference in the long run.
What do you do to save money during the recession? What little ways do you help the environment? Would you rather be “chic” or help the planet?

Did you get plastic bags or bring your own reusable bags?
daisy / 512 posts
we have to walk anyway, at least from the bus stop =P
anyway, being green is so in. every time we go to a job fair we pick up at least 2 or 3 reusable bags from companies giving them out… they used to give out squeezy toys or pens but now it’s all about reusable bags.
SO WE USE THEM! they’re so nice, they’re stronger than plastic bags and hold a lot more. if you had 6 plastic bags, that could have been just one reusable bag! depending on your goods. last year we did a design project on reusable bags so i guess i’m pretty familiar with how they’re marketed =P

We always use resuable bags now.We went to Sam’s (bulk store) and bought 2 Extra large bags for like 3 dollars and we can fit like 25 plastic bags of groceries in both of them….they don’t even get that heavy. I think it’s more important to be eco friendly b/c if we aren;t there isnt going to be an eco system or Earth for us to be “chic” in.

i redo my closet.
instead of buying all new clothes when i am unimpressed i re-dye them different colors, stencil on them, turn old tshirts into tank tops or cotton skirts, or i get a big sleep shirt and put a blet around it and call it a dress.
seems to work for me, i haven’t gone on a shopping spree since last year just about.

@ina_sweaterpoorlyknit@xanga - ……That is such an AWESOME idea! I wouldnt think of redyeing clothes! I tend to pair out of season clothes with current season clothes to save money. Like I’ll wear a tunic dress with leggins & a cute button down sweater or wear layers.
Where do you get the dye for your clothes? I’m gonna see if it works with some old shirts I have before I turn them into cleaning rags or let my dog sleep in them!

We live in the country, so walking to the store wouldn’t be practical. But we recycle everything possible. Kitchen waste gets fed to the geese or goats. We use the flourescent energy saving bulbs. We use the reusable tote bags for shopping. And I mow the lawn as little as possible!

@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga -
i just get it at walmart, its called RIT

they might not have all these colors at your walmart, but they work really well.
i really love them you can mix colors to get funky ones, or leave them in over night and they get really dark. my favorites probably their dark green.

@ina_sweaterpoorlyknit@xanga - Cool, thanks! I may save myself the trouble & buy it online because the Walmart by me sucks & the other one is too far. LOL. I’m wearing a shirt right now I could dye to hide a stain because I like it so much! =)

Reusable bags FTW. They’re so much easier to carry, too, because I can sling them over my shoulder. I don’t have to deal with any awkward paper bags to hold and worry about ripping or plastic handles cutting into my arm with a heavy load.

Reusable bags are the WAY TO GO!! Love them
I’d much rather help the planet than be “chic” or whatever. Earth shouldn’t be turned into one big garbage dump.
I’m the hippie of my friends
lol reusable bags, and I always recycle… and encourage them to, too
This topic was a good, relevant posting

My bf bought me an 18-oz. BPA-free stainless steel water bottle called Kleen Kanteen fromWhole Foods. No more plastic bottles! I also use one of those reusable grocery bags when I go grocery shopping or use paper instead of plastic.

HAHA I have a coin jar and I’ll take it with me to the grocery store and go through the self-check out and put ALL the change into the machine. I’ll stand there for like 5 minutes but it’s a good way to get rid of ur change LOL
