Yes it is. I think it is because the hot water gets rid of your natural body oils. Any water will do this, but hot water more so. I mean we can’t just stop washing with water— everyone would be gross. But try and choose the lesser of two evils. I try not to go too hot, but I can’t tolerate cold showers. You should also try and make your showers as quick as possible. Long hot showers will dry out your skin. Make sure to use plenty of moisturizer immediately after getting out of the shower, while your skin is still wet.
It dries out your skin. But that’s why you use lotion or body oils as soon as you get out of the shower, to counteract this. You shouldn’t stop using hot water completely – it kills the germs on your skin – but at the same time, it shouldn’t be scalding hot. Showers that are 5-10 minutes long are best, too – the less time you spend showering, the less time you’ll spend drying out your skin.
@polyphonicthought@xanga - I’m pretty sure that water hot enough to kill the germs on your skin would also burn it quite badly.

It’s not “bad” for your skin per se, but it can dry it a out a bit. Just moisturize when you get out of the shower and you should be fine.

@mo_chic_for_jesus@xanga – not really…it should be just warm enough to dissolve dirt on the skin and kill germs, but not to the point you would burn. Most people wouldn’t even make it out of their showers, if that was the case.

Ugh I don’t CARE if it’s bad for my skin. Lukewarm/cold showers are the WORSE! I am developing a dry spot on my shoulder though which I think it from the hot showers.

It’s not actually “bad”. When you shower, hot water is good to open up with, because it opens up your pores so you can clean the dirt out and unclog them. But before you get out of the shower, you should always turn the heat down so your pores can close.
They say washing your face with hot water makes you get wrinkles faster. Using hot water dries out your scalp. It damages your hair, etc. etc. All in all, hot water is “baaad”
Of course, one of the most comforting things damages everything that’s most important to most ! ahaha
I guess moisturizing lotion, anyone ? ^_^

Just put baby oil on your skin before you dry off. You’ll be oily for a while but the after math is worth it.

Washing with hot water does not “kill germs on your skin”. If it’s hot enough to kill germs and sterilize, it’s also hot enough to kill your skin cells too, leaving burns. Water just removes dirt and sweat. Hot water removes oils at a faster rate.
they say that’s why women in India [not sure if that was the exact place, but i think so...?] don’t have as many wrinkles. Because they pretty much have only cold water !
@SamiiSaysHaii@xanga - I know a woman who is around 50 and lives in Danmark in a hippy community (loooong story) anyway, she uses cold water and they dont have electricity (I was at her house in february just imagine) and she has a wondefurl body!!! and almost no wrinkles….
so I think I’m going to ban hot water…. but that’s hard

@Mercredi - oh i know ! i wouldn’t [couldn't ^_^] ban it altogether. Just don’t use it as much, or just not burning hot.

just use a moisturizing body wash… like another poster said, hot water opens your pores so you can clean out dirt and such, but after you wash and rinse you should switch to slightly cold water to close those pores up again. and when rinsing conditioner out of your hair, you should always rinse with lukewarm/coolish water otherwise conditioning is pointless

it’s bad for ur skin b/c it dries it out very quickly. it will also make ur hair very frizzy and not seem as hydrated as it should be. it takes the watter out.
me i still like hot showers but i sometimes switch to a little cold for a couple of minutes so i don’t get really dry skin and my hair stays nice and hydrated.

I freaking LOVE hot showers
However, I’ve started to shower in lukewarm-ish water… because I’ve read SO MANY articles/tidbits that hot water will (like everyone said) dry out your skin, causing it to produce more oil if you don’t moisturize (and if you have acne-prone skin… yikes!)
Not only that, but it AGES your skin! I read it makes your skin lose elasticity, leading to (you guessed it)… wrinkles. :-/
And it makes your hair fall out or something years from now. I think.
So yeah. Goodbye long, hot, wonderful, relaxing showers….

I have quite hot showers, but always finish them off cold – expecially after washing my hair. Cold water closes your pores and makes your hair shinier

Because it melts your bones eventually. That’s why you get shorter as you get older, you know.
