My Converse and skater shoes collection is my love, but I know I need to grow up (oh, so sad) and get some more dressy shoes and style (which I’ve been running away from for…ever).
I need to learn how to put outfits together too, no Gossip Girl Serena’s mad throw-on-anything-and-look-good fashion skills here. I really like the vintage looks I came across recently in some great fashion blogs.
Some people can wear a garbage bag and make the look the next fall trend! I’m so envious of those people with skills.
Anyone got tips and such on how you achieved a new look? How do you put outfits together?

Many of my outfits have the tops and bottoms that are made to go with each other. I wear Shalwar Kameez. But I can also take those tops and wear jeans underneath too and stuff like that.
So really putting together and outfit is easy for me.

Haha… yeah, on the show Serena really does have a look like you mentioned. I can pull it off sometimes. And other times… not so much, lol. An easy thing is to just have “go to” outfits so that no matter what kind of mood you’re in there’s always something you know you can wear and get away with without really trying. I’m doing that today because I can’t be bothered to think about what I’m gonna wear haha. And knowing your body type and style helps. But… if converse/skater shoes is your style then keep it. Maybe just get a few pieces for a job or something. Unless you work at a skate park, haha.

I just throw on whatever I feel like, haha xD
For school, I prep the day before, and if it’s for just going outside, I just throw on a t-shirt and some jeans.

Watch old movies, look at old pictures from the era you want to resemble and that you admire. Get a style icon.
Then, head out to the thrift stores to make it happen!

I try to buy stuff that isn’t too tight or too loose, and is in my “style.” The most important question I ask myself when I consider purchasing an item is: will I stare at it when I get home and be excited, or disappointed because I really don’t like the item? Dark washed jeans are always flattering, and classic shoes – black pumps, neutral colored heels, etc… – will help in minimizing the stress if you have to choose an outfit. If ever there is a day you wake up and don’t have time to get ready, make sure you have a couple power outfits available so you don’t feel terrible the entire day. And most of all, confidence tops off the look. Haha, have fun =].

Wow, you and I both.
The change of style, at least.

Fashion is over rated. I hate it, new expensive stuff that I could never afford and If I owned it would prolly hardly wear it thinking it would get ruined. $190 for jeans I don’t think so or $40 for a top, umm No. I think I only own maybe 6 name brand items of clothing. (gap, old navy etc…) I just get up and throw something on. I don’t really even care if it matches. I don’t wear make up unless going somewhere special. Just my donate life green rubber bracelet that I never take off. ear rings, eyebrow ring and sometimes a necklace or rings. I work with animals and have a zoo of my own so I could care less what I look like; I feel funny when I have to get dressed up.

Day-to-day, I don’t worry.
If I want to look nice and I’m really having trouble, then I’ll pull out my sketchbook. The first thing I do is imagine the sort of “aura” or impression I want to make. Then I’ll sketch a few pieces that I’d initially been considering – say, a skirt with a blouse. I check how it looks, maybe make some changes.
I realise this isn’t viable on a daily basis, but I do it for special events for the pencil practice.

I feel kind of dull with my outfits. I don’t choose outrages colors and I tend to pair a nice shirt with jeans and some random shoes that is around the shirt’s color.
I’ve been feeling that I have to give up my converse but I can not. They have been me for so long. I did stop buying gaphic t-shirts.

i have a hard time

i know what I have in my closet and I just sit there sometimes a couple hrs before I know I have to leave ana visualize different outfits in my head….
I just knw what will work and what wont. I rarely have to go through my wardrobe and actually take time to try stuff on….its always been this way.
This is how it is when im shopping too…im way to lazy to go wait inline to go try stuff on. Im very good at knowing what will and does look good on my body just by looking at it.

it takes time to develop your own style. It’s a trial and error kind of thing. I tried a lot of looks before I developed my own personal style for both work and outside of work.
If you love your converse, you don’t have to give them up. Keep them and incorporate them into your style as you grow (until you decide you just don’t like them).

I usually put on what’s clean and matches reasonably well.

i live of skate shoes and converse as well..
but i just buy a fewgood pieces of clothing that are nterchangable and go with almost anything, such as a good skirt or a nice top. and carnigans. . and thats my closet
noww to make outfits.. just put whatever is clean on

Basically, I try to visualize in my head what would look good and what wouldn’t basically. There’s nothing wrong with converses but as long as you are wearing them at appropriate times.

Something tight with something loose. Usually tight pants (skinny jeans) with a loose shirt.
Or tight tank top/singlet with a loose flowy skirt/high waisted skirt.
And when I say tight, I don’t mean skanky tight clothes.

Depending on the day (and the weather), I choose an outfit.
If it’s cold, gloomy, or rainy, I go with dark colors, usually a black shirt and dark wash pants. I like to make sure the shirt and hoodie (if I’m wearing one) have at least one matching color or pattern. If I’m wearing a shirt that doesn’t match one of my hoodies, I wear my leather jacket. I typically wear a white belt or a belt with white accents. If I do, I wear white shoes. If I wear a belt with chrome accents, I got with a black shoe.
If it’s sunny, hot, or just bright, I go with light colors, usually white shirts with graphics of color and lighter pants, though dark wash pants can work to contrast with the shirt. I use a belt that will definitely contrast with the shirt I’m wearing, so usually a black belt with either chrome or white accents. Then, I wear white shoes to match the shirt. If it’s cold, I rock the leather jacket anyway, because it ends up looking good.
Then, I have some special outfits that just match colors with shirt, belt, and shoe, but those are rare.

I don’t really know
I start to panic when anyone asks me to go out because I have too many clothes to choose from. it is a self fulfilling prophecy and unnecessary anxiety that plagues me everytime I have to go out lol plus I’m insecure even though I seemingly look fine to everyone else. I’d consider myself to be stylish but nobody can really tell because I usually don’t know which outfit to wear and don’t want to be late, so I end up wearing the same pair of jeans and a casual shirt.

haha. i came here to comment to say “omg, i have the same problem” then turns out i wrote this (minus the picture, lovely blog added that). how funny. but yah. i think the problem is i’m so set on the same pieces that when i go out, i end up buying stuff that looks similar to what i already have. i won’t be able to break out of my style haha. but i do believe people can look great without spending a lot. though my friend tells me otherwise. she says she always looks great because she buys great unique expensive pieces. shrugg! we’re all different i guess!

I don’t go for that baggy garbage-bag look. You’ll eventually find your style. And it’s good to have an eclectic style too. If you can work more than one type of clothing, good for you! It’ll make you more flexible in different situations and you can feel stylish anywhere.

preparation works for me, if you know you’re going to go out soon, and need some nice clothes, look around and test ! Layering is also helpful. It also depends on what you want, put abit of your personality in your clothing style, don’t be a sheep.
Though the concept of putting together clothes and actually making them look good can definitely be challenging.
ps, i still love my converse and skater shoes. They’re classics

Hmm…you should check out “What Not to Wear” on TLC. I’ve picked up a lot of wardrobe tips on how to dress my age from the stylists. Very informative show.

I like to steal looks from celebrities. Flip through a few magazines and look for looks you can tone down to something everyday.
One idea is a white tee and jeans with red shoes and purse. It looks really relax yet trendy.
Ooo and by the way, you can rock Chucks still. You just have to do it a different way. Try a dark boot cut jean and a fitted tee. That should give you a relaxed grown up look with your Chucks. The skater shoes however…
If anyone has fashion questions, message me and I’ll write back.

I have always received compliments for my outfit ensembles, and you don’t
have to spend a lot of money to look like you’ve spent a lot of money. As a matter of fact, a lot of my clothes I get at thrift stores, great for vintage looks. The key isn’t so much what as how you put it together. I color coordinate from myhead to my toes, very important. I have found you can really liven things up with accessories, such as belts and jewelry, for me the more color the better, and shoes complete the look, just changing shoes, can make you look anything from casual to elegant. You can start with a very simple black dress and with a brightly colored belt and chunky brightly colored jewelry and shoes make that little black dress go wow. As I say for me color is the key, wild bright patterns, and then sometimes very simple, One of my outfits that I always receive compliments on, starts with simple bootcut black pants and a black tunic, I then add a zebra print denim jacket and white bangle type jewelry and white heels, heels always give your outfits a touch of class. I always coordinate even my earrings, bracelets and necklaces, and you can do a lot with belts. As I say, it doesn’t have to be expensive to look expensive, most of my jewelry I buy at Walmart, I do have some expensive jewelry, but those are mostly sentimental pieces, I love black hills gold. But the majority is just cheap brightly colored beads and chains.

when I first started getting into dressing myself well from the stage you are at, i assembled a collage of all my favorite outfits and trends from magazines and such. Then i kept that in mind whenever i went shopping. Also, I just discovered (no lie!) polyvore.com, which essentially lets you make collages and outfits with stuff found on store’s websites.
if you’re working with what you already own, try taking a camera and putting things into new combinations and snapping pictures of the ones you like. That way you don’t have to plan so much in advance, you’ll have combinations you can go to.

check out chictopia.com for some inspiration
it’s so addicting. it has photos of regular girls (and guys) and they’re all so stylish. and if you sign up(it’s free) you can look for people with your body type and hair color and everything. it’s great

I just like to play around. Mix pieces that you wouldn’t guess would work together. I don’t think you need to get rid of your shoe collection! (Maybe because I have the same sort of shoe collection lol) Trial and error, I think. It takes some time to get a sense of what you do and don’t like and what flatters your body.

What Not to Wear is fantastic :]

Experiment, experiment, experiment! Sometimes it can turn out great but other times it can be a disaster. Just try to match stuff till you’ve developed your own sense of style. Look out for stuff that needs to be matched like colour, material, style, details/print etc… Make sure the overall look isn’t too busy or inappropriate for the occasion and such. There really isn’t a Style 101 if you wanna find your own style
There’s a guideline for buying new pieces of clothing if you think you don’t know how to match/have too much stuff. When you see something you like, go through the stuff in your closet that you actually wear, and see if you can match it with at least 3 other things. If the answer is yes, it’s a keeper! This way, you’ll also be more conscious of what matches what.

I keep it simple. For spring, I love colorful cardigans, a good dark rinse jean, ballet flats and neutral tees. All of that combined makes for a simple, classic outfit. If I feel like being a little funky, I add a printed, vintage tee my dad used to wear or some wooden bracelets. For me, it’s all about simplicity.

look at a bunch of fashion magazines. it’ll rub off on you.

Same here, I have trouble putting outfits together. As of right now, they’re mostly practical wear than reflecting whom I am as a person. Most of the time what I want to wear does not work with the weather, so I get discourage and just end up wearing what works best with the weather.
I suggest you find your sense of style through magazine, media, movies, friends, stores,….etc. The best part is you don’t have to stick to one style and copy it exactly. You can mix and match. Take what you like from each style/fashion trend and put them together how ever you like it. I like to take notes on what I like, what inspired me. When I go shopping I look for those pieces that resemble what I saw. Mix and match what I have and just bought. Sometime I modified it to my likings by changing the style slightly with sewing or adding stuff to it.
