The proverbial hipster scarf – love it or hate it? This scarf trend has been seen on men and women all over the country, affecting teens and adults, celebs and citizens alike.
I wonder what caused such love for the hipster scarf? I personally do wear them from time to time and have enjoyed doing so, but still am unsure why the trend has taken off. Maybe it was a band, a friend, or perhaps a store that turned us on to them.
Is the hipster scarf hot or not? Why do you think they are so popular?

guest
It’s overdone.
I wore it once. But only because it really pulled everything together. haha
guest
sorry but no.. it’s not cute and people need to stop wearing it b/c everyone is. just like leggings – kinda gross, but incredibly hard to get rid of.

overrated, i think it came from the aztec printed scarf

I kept seeing these and wondered what the big deal was…I don’t like things bulky around my neck….

Scarves are fun, versitale and easy. Timeless and classic is used right. I think the “hipster” bit is fine, but will wear out its welcome and we will once again fall back to the classic use of scarves.
guest
no.
sunflower / 288 posts
I think it is nice. I don’t do it as it would be really weird with my head scarf but I really like the look
guest
I love scarfs, they look and feel nice
guest
Only if it is weather appropriate. I saw a girl wearing a wool scarf and Ugg boots with shorts. It was like 80 outside, it looked dumb.
It’s like there is an epidemic of cold necks or something.
guest
I love it! I love leggings too.
guest
Scarves, hipster or otherwise, are a winter fashion staple for me.
sunflower / 294 posts
hot! but i’m going to wear it when it goes out of style.
guest
usually no.
but when i met benny benassi he had one on so I thought they were really cool for like 2 days. haha

Mines really warm..
But it cost a bomb! it was fifteeen pound, which was then $30.
guest
Funny….I’m wearing one now.
I really love it.It’s red. It has little dangly things. It makes a simple tee look nicer, and it’s actually cold enough to wear it sensibly.
But then,I also like leggings.
guest
I love it
Gives me an edgier look
guest
I have a ton of scarves that I always pair with my outfits. I have this green hipster scarf that I just adore!!!
)
I think it gives my outfits a more bohemian look a la Misha Barton. Plus… it find it very casual chic to wear it with a tank top and blue jean shorts…. you could pair it with gladiator sandals.
It’s a great accessory when you don’t want to wear a necklace.
)
guest
I enjoy wearing these scarfs because I am always cold and wearing one keeps my neck warm so in turn it keeps my body warm.
guest
They were cool before they were abused by everyone,
guest
neither…it’s just overdone, everybody wears them.
guest
i think they look. but then again, I have mad love for scarves no matter what.
guest
They’re hot for the simple reason that they look good on everyone. However, not everyone wants to wear them which makes you cool for wearing them.
guest
not. just another overdone and lame trend, like uggs and crocs.
guest
I think it all just depends on whos wearing the scarf.
guest
fuck hipster everything. and a big fuck to urban outfitters. god everyone looks like a clone these days. it’s sad and pathetic.
orchid / 137 posts
Its cute. But i agree with one of the lady’s above me; it an overdone trend..kind of like shutter glasses. But I can’t pull those scarves off. I think it looks really cute on others though..
tulip / 15 posts
@grosse_fille@xanga - funny, that’s been said for years… except back in the day it was “carbon copy” and before that? What would the expression be? I’m positive it existed as long as fashion…
OMG, all those girls are wearing the same seashell necklace and the guys are in the same loin cloth! They all look the SAME!
Trends would not be trends without those that set them and those that follow them. And fashion would not be fashion without trend-setters and trend followers. It’d be function only, without the following form. You’d probably see balls and boobs out the ying-yang…
Jeez, nobody says anything original anymore!
guest
You are really lame for calling it a “hipster scarf.”
I say that in the nicest way possible.
I wear scarves, but I always have so yeah.
magnolia / 1030 posts
Actually, I really do wonder where it started from….
I loooove it. I dont have a scarf like that of my own, wish I did. But i do wear my winter scarf a lot now. I never noticed how a strip of fabric could make my neck soooooooooooooo warm…I hate taking it off now b/c its sooooo nice and warrmmmm
magnolia / 1030 posts
yeah also i agree
i like the look, but definitly overdone. @Heatherwhoelse@xanga - just from looking at your profile picture, you look like you can really pull it off–and well!
guest
I dont wear them. MY MOM DOES THOUGH! hahaha she bought like two scarves at forever 21. i was like wow mom, trying to be a h&m mannequin? jk jk. ummm it’s an alright style altogether… i dont mind it.
guest
Scarves have always been a big part of the ensemble people sport where I live in Western Washington. It’s great for keeping your neck dry when it’s raining, or pairing up as a head cover if it starts raining really hard.
I love them.
guest
It really depends.
guest
It depends on the person and the outfit, same goes for any piece you wear. If you wear it to pull something together it can look fabulous, really it depends on if you stick to a certain style or if you’re willing to try new things.
Personally, I have like 8 of them. I love scarves<3 Mad kudos =]

It’s a fad. They look good on models because everything looks good on models. I try to be fashionable but I don’t go along with every trend, such as this one. No thanks.
guest
I hate scarves just for fashion. I mean, it’s good to buy it cause it looks nice but wear it when it’s weather appropriate. I don’t wear this hipster scarf. I don’t like it how people wear them with tank tops or tshirts. I wear scarves to be warm.
guest
I love it.
Especially because it actually started out with Arabs… and I’m an Arab.
I mean, the kinds that have been around for as long as I can remember are the black/white and red/white which had political meanings in some place, and in other places just meant a way to hide from the sun.
I think it’s cute that they’ve been made into a billion different colors.
I have a rainbow one!
As well as authentic Egyptian one…
I’m pretty sure I’m never going to stop wearing them.
They’re wonderful.
I want more.
guest
Hot or not? Yes. Very hot. I couldn’t tell you why they are popular.. I just think they look really cute on girls.
guest
Overrated <_< I couldn’t even tell it was a scarf when I first saw it. LOL Well, it doesn’t look like one ._. It doesn’t even look that good nor does it look warm -_-
guest
depends on who’s wearing it. on guys absolutley never!
guest
It’s so played out. Sure, it looks nice, but to me, anything that’s lost its originality isn’t so fashionable. I know it’s a horrible habit, but whenever I spot someone wearing the so-called “hipster” scarf, or Abercrombie for that matter! I immediately think, oh, he wants to be in the cool crowd (in a mocking tone).
Anyway. I just feel like being silly right now.
daisy / 742 posts
I like it but it’s kinda overrated.
guest
I’m a scarf addict XD
guest
I love it, but I hate how everyone does it also.
guest
i hate them
with a burning passion
guest
I HATE leggings especially when 30-something year old women walk around wearing a T-shirt, flats, and leggings… that’s right, NO PANTS, just leggings. I find that 1) Disgusting and 2) Surprised that these women don’t realize that they’re in public, where everyone can see the junk in their trunk and numerous unpleasant things that we (ofcourse us, non-perverts) most definitely do not want to see.
The hipster scarf? LOVE it. Tried it once and then slowly found that it goes well with my outfits and keeps my neck warm during school when they don’t have heating xD
guest
if you don’t like it then don’t do it. who cares what other people decided what they want to wear
guest
@thisisthe_bestdayever@xanga - i agree, on some people it looks dumb
i love the scarf..its a little much in the summer but in cooler weather its looks so cool! lol
guest
Errr. it’s alright. But they’re so hard to go with outfits without looking preppy.
guest
if they are worn right, i like them on girls. i don’t like them on boys.
guest
i’ve been wearing scarves like that since i was a child. i get cold quite easily.
guest
I’ll tell you why I wear one… when I’m bored of a shirt, I throw a scarf on, and it’s a new shirt! haha
guest
@thisisthe_bestdayever@xanga - yea, my wife looks good in them, but that dude in the photo looks ridiculous!
guest
I’ve never worn this or leggings. I don’t usually follow trends either.
guest
That dude’s scarf looks like an entire outfit. If we were still in biblical times, he’d fit right in!
daisy / 651 posts
Well, at first I thought they were okay.
But once virtually everywhere that I turned had a scarf in the vicinity, I’ve begun to dislike them. I have no intention on wearing one, because I think it just makes you look ridiculous. And I’ve worn some pretty ridiculous things myself, but nothing too extraordinary.
Some people, yeah, they look pretty good with it. But it doesn’t mean everyone should go out and buy one. Especially when it’s the same one. I saw about five people wearing the exact same color and pattern scarf on the same day. Seriously now ? Is that really necessary ?
So no, a definite not.
daisy / 651 posts
@x_vesper@xanga - I hate that ! Lol it’s disgusting when people wear leggings as pants ! No one wants to see that, really ! lol
But what I find extra hilarious is that they wear that, but they frown upon some of the stuff teenagers wear, like short skirts. Well, at least it’s covering something.
guest
I didn’t realize this was a “hipster” thing. I just thought it was cute fashion.

I think scarves should be worn for warmth.
guest
i like it, adds a little personality.
some people have legitimate uses for it
a) it’s cold
b) they are a singer and want to do everything they can to protect thair vocal chords.
guest
i hate it. it makes people look like they’re choking. and some people can’t even pull it off. it’s like the faux hawk. GAG. unless you’re cold and native american.. then go for it.
you get my drift.
guest
LOVE IT<3
guest
I have a love/hate relationship with them. I’ll wear them sometimes if it’s part of a look, but otherwise I’ll stay the hell away
guest
h o t hot, but cliche at times.

Nope.
guest

Hipster scarf??
orchid / 145 posts
i’ve always liked them even before they were in. in fact, i got my first “hipster” scarf maybe 5 years ago in asia.
guest
I wear scarves because they’re warm. Can’t blame me for trying to stay healthy, right?
Haha, but I agree. Way, waaaaay overdone. I honestly do like them, but just the fact that EVERYONE wears them now, makes me want to not like them. =(
guest
Sometimes. It’s a little too overdone now.
guest
It depends on what you’re wearing and if you can really pull it off. I wear them though.. I wore them before the huge fad of them came in though. I’m really getting sick of them, especially on people that just doesn’t match or is right in any manner. Honestly, people need to understand how to wear this trend.
guest
I liked them before they were big in America.
I don’t really like how popular they are here…
Also… I don’t like them paired with the whole ‘hipster’ look.
I think that looks really stupid.
I only like them with styles like this.
guest
I think they’re really cute.
guest
Scarfs should be cute and fun or serve a purpose. This one does nothing for me, I think it’s stupid. It doesn’t help in the cold, and it isn’t cute enough to help with style. Plus it’s way overdone, and for the most part should never have been worn by most people, especially men. Only certain people ever looked good wearing it to me.
guest
I like them…on women. They look weird on men. Same with skinny jeans.
But I’m tired of seeing so many people wearing them. I don’t own one but I’d like to if I run across one in a store sometime.
guest
I think it’s overplayed and overdone. It might have been trendy a year back or so, but now so many people are wearing them that it killed it for me.
I wear scarves, but the regular long knit kind that you drape over your shoulders or have to actually wind around your neck.
orchid / 132 posts
It’s a little random..looks like you’re trying too hard to be different/unique.
guest
Ok, first off. It’s called a keffiyeh. Get it right. But yes, it is a hipster scarf.
Secondly, it is very stupid. It is out of style and has been for
awhile. Even when it was “in,” it was a stupid trend and they would be
everywhere. Anyone who still considers wearing one now is an idiot and
probably doesn’t own a mirror or know how to use one.
If you really need to keep your neck warm, there are other methods.
Such as wearing a normal scarf and not looking like an idiot.
guest
They’re alright.
guest
I don’t care for them.
guest
Who the hell cares if “everyone wheres them”? That’s just forcing yourself to be an “individual” just because you don’t want to seem like you are following a trend.
The scarves look good, unless you just wear it with your Hot Topic t-shirt for no good reason. And as for leggings? Um, dress + cool weather + boots . . . what is the problem?
*sigh* I feel like I’m reading comments from middle school elitists. XD
guest
The hipster scarf was a trend 2 years ago, done and done. Now it’s just mundane, along with waist coats, flats, trucker hats, & super v-neck tees.
Now its all about loose fit sleeveless tees, Rosary beads, moto & bomber jackets, wing-tip dress shoes and Charlie Chaplin-esque fedoras. Henley tees, skinny fit jeans, and cardigans are still in.
But bringing back trends is the trend, so who cares. Aha. Do what you do.
orchid / 103 posts
the purple one is nicer but the brown looks kinda like a table cloth
guest
I think they look good, and I know I love wearing mine.
The nice thing is that I’ve never seen someone wearing one and thought “Man, that looks bad on you…”
They look nice on everyone, and makes it seem like you tried a little extra that day.
I don’t really think things that look good can be killed just because a lot of people like them…
guest
i’m not trying to hate at all, but my personal opinion is that it’s a bandwagon trend. kids probably saw it on kanye west and brought the whole look to their friends.
guest
I don’t own a hipster scarf; my scarf is twelve feet long and striped in multiple colors. I let it hang low enough that it almost drags the ground.
dahlia / 2012 posts
Obviously I’m not “with it” because I’ve never seen anyone wear this out in public, and the only place I’ve ever seen anything even remotely similar to this is on Etsy.com (where they have all sorts of really nice scarves). I like it, though, but not on the guy in that picture. He just looks silly, but that probably has more to do with his posture.
guest
I love scarves in general, but I’m not sure what a hipster scarf is. Is it the shape of it?
guest
I really like the look, but haven’t worn one myself. That’s more because I don’t feel like paying twelve or more dollars for one… Eh. I’m a poor college student, y’know?
I think it’s really popular everywhere right now, though. I see it a lot in Asian fashions, too. In fact, I think I saw it there first, so maybe that’s how it got started here? Either way, I think it’s usually pretty cute.
guest
It depends on how they pull them off. The people in the two pictures above don’t pull them off very well…. but I’ve seen people wearing them who look awfully good with them on.
guest
eh I think it’s cute but style is always a personal preference.
guest
I just enjoy my nice sensible scarf with Irish tweed hat.
guest
It’s the stupidest trend since dudes started wearing their hair like roosters. It’s such an L.A. trend too. First of all, it’s a pointless accessory. You need a scarf if it’s cold….and if it’s cold, you would wear a jacket or sweater, but when people sport these neckerchiefs, they are usually just wearing a tee shirt, which means it’s probably not cold enough to wear a coat let along a scarf. And if you are cold enough to have to need a scarf, try getting some long sleeve shirts or putting that Jack Skellington hooded sweatshirt I know you own.
tulip / 8 posts
So not. Is this so you can hang yourself from your own fashion misery at any given point in time? Disagree.
guest
NOT. Don’t get me wrong, I like scarfs, but not worn in this fashion, with that same lame picnic table print. Blahhh. Maybe was cute at some point, but way over done now. Thanks, HT.
guest
I really love wearing them !!! i have three, two of them I got in New York City. But i don’t plan on continuing the trend when the weather isn’t right. they have been a fun fall/ winter accessory !!!
guest
I love wearing them.
Sometimes they just really top a cute outfit off. Like, if you can’t find a necklace to match your outfit, put on a fashion scarf! (:
guest
@Strawberry_Flavored_Skittle@xanga - You’re so right! Cute for fall/winter (:
guest
i dont care for the ones above but the ones ive been getting from the gap… omggggggg. i wear them almost everyday. its just another accessory to help me out.
guest
@giventodreams__x@xanga -ho… you met Benny Benassi? That is bad ass!
I really think scarves on guys is really hot… I dunno about these hipster scarves but I’ve just really always liked scarves on guys. Especially with a nice wool coat and one of those cool little english hats with the brim (I dont really know what they’re called) I just think its a hot look. Especially if the guy is brunette

Hello from the author,
Thanks everyone for your comments! I think a scarf be it ‘hipster’ in style or not can be a fantastic accessory. Keep the love/comments coming
ciao,

guest
I think that if it works with the outfit, it’s awesome.
guest
it was hot for the first minutes of its existence. i’m so of seeing this look. i’m sick of the style of dress that pretends not to care but requires hours upon hours of prep
guest
It reminds me of the scarves that women in their late 30s up to their elder years wear. Which is why everytime I see one, I have to turn away and laugh. I imagine the person wearing it is a little old lady with sticky candies in her purse.
XD It’s a terrible look.
guest
Wow am I a statistical anomoly or what? I wear a scarf when I’m… let’s say it together… COLD. Guys that wear the scarf to look cool… here’s a message from me to you: you look like you belong with those guys up on Brokeback Mountain…

I see it everywhere. It’s no longer very trendy, just repitious.
guest
Depends on the person and the outfit.
guest
I wouldn’t wear one, but then, I’m not in the habit of dressing in the latest fad.
guest
I like the plaid design.. o.o’ but never actually owned one ^^
tulip / 17 posts
I would keep ONE. (in a good color). But maybe two if I was rich lol-And wear it every once in a while with a good outfit to match it or for it to pull off the rest of the outfit. Otherwise, everyone doing this all at the same time would sicken me. Which it is.
I was about to buy one once, but I thought twice.
I don’t have the kind of money to wear random crap once in a while anyway so I thought I’d save it for later.
guest
I like.
guest
I think they are fun and cute. Plus warm!

No. No. NO.
I can’t believe some son of a b**** is actually making money off dyed cheesecloths. :/

i love love love wearin scarves! i do agree, however, that wearing them with shorts and uggs is UGGLY. lol…i hate uggs, but theyre especially ugly with shorts. i dont get that trend.
o, and i usually dont wear my scarves the way ‘hipsters’ do. i wear them in whats called a european knot. its less trend-slave like, i think.
guest
I love the look! I’m in love with the love quote scarves…i kno it’s so played out, but they have the cutest in all the colors.
guest
I’ve never seen anyone wear that but I’ve seen the Pashmina scarfs on every woman in the subway in New York City. It used to be a middle-eastern thing but now everyone has one. I HAVE ONE and it is soooo cute and I love it.
guest
@shatteredmoonbeams@xanga - I wear mine in the European knot as well!!! So classy.
guest
I prefer a real scarf, like the kind you wear when it’s cold out.
guest
i love scarves so i say yes. although i did read a blog that these hipster scarves represent something from the middle east so idk. lol.
guest
if you wear the scarf the right way, with a classy coat and nice heels, scarfs can really make you feel mature and classy :]

actually yeah wait i forgot to add
wearing them in winter and when its cold and a scarf is necessary then “hipster scarves” are cool
but when ppl wear them when its hot to “look good” ITS RIDICULOUSS..and dumb
guest
It’s a great trend! It allows you the chance to put a splash of personality on a dull outfit.
guest
Everytime I see it I want to ask why it is that people are wearing it when Muslim men wore it people screamed and ran for the hills. The patterns are close. I’m not the only person who’s noticed it.
guest
yea.. they look reli gd, but my cousin says if i wear it, i look pretty gay and he thinks that no guys would wear them since they’re not popular in australia..Well.. to me, i think its a kind of fashion… i love scarfs…they’re soooo nice=]
guest
i have lived in europe most of life.
i live in europe now. that scarf has been around for a while, and now going out of style.
i still can’t believe it has taken american’s this long to catch up on the fashion. whenever i go to the united states, i see americans wearing what europeans wore 2 or 3 years ago. and are now all completely out of style.
i just think americans are WAY too slow on fashion.
guest
I kinda like it on girls, but on guys, it just looks gay.
guest
tacky.
Hermes or burberry scarves (a la Lily Van der Woodsen from Gossip Girl) beat those anyday.
guest
how can you abuse scarves, its like saying jeans are so overdone. Are you talking about a particular style of scarf like the keffiyeh which was a potent political symbol appropriated by vicemag-reading uo & aa lovers; that has its own implications unrelated to fashion.
Its sort of vaguely annoying when people pick apart a fairly benign habit that can be as classic and elegant as wearing a scarf. It further encourages americans to categorize themselves, & never dress creatively. If this was some sort of legitimate complaint about a real edgy trend appearing in global fashion, like drop-crotch pants or monkey fur, which happen to be current trends which I have my doubts on, then I would more understand. But seriously, encourage creativity, don’t hate.
guest
like leggings and ugg boots, its something that everyone complains about but I find it to be a cute and functional way to stay warm walking around campus in a colder climate. I probably won’t wear it in a few months, but there’s a good chance I’ll pull it all out of storage for fall again.
guest
I’m not Palestinian.
guest
I think it’s because of CSS’s scarf tutorial. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgSb8BlMb8U
guest
I personally love them: I think they have kicked off so well because they don’t get as warm and stuffy as a traditional scarf.. you can show it off all day!
guest
are you people serious? “hipster scarf”? they’re called KEFFIYEHS and they’re traditional muslim attire worn by most to show solidarity with the Palestinians who are subject to Israeli oppression and genocide.
how sad that everything meaningful just gets mass produced by fashion industries and labeled “hipster (whatever)”
peony / 1 posts
First off, I’m not in a pathetic race for fashion, so I’m not a hipster and I have several of those from over the years when I bought my first one at goodwill several years ago! How come everything I wear turns out to get labeled as a “hipster” item??
