So, I went to get my haircut. I don’t have a regular place; I just kind of jump around every time. I get there, and they bring me over to the sink to do the whole shampoo thing.
The lady stopped in the middle of shampooing my hair and poked me in the eye. “Are those real?”
She asked about my eye lashes. Normally, when someone asks you, “Are those real?” eyelashes are not the first thing that comes to mind.
“Ha ha — yeah, they are real,” I answered with a nervous laugh and a soar neck.
“Okay, wait just right there. Let me get my manager. Don’t move,” she said, walking away quickly. It wasn’t as if I were just going to leave with a soaked head dripping with water. Cold! So, I waited. It felt like an eternity and my neck was growing sore from my head being in the sink.
Eventually, she comes back with her manager. “Look! Look at her eyelashes! See, I told you we could use longer lash extensions on the people that come in!” Then they both proceeded to poke my eyes and continue to converse about it.
I have never had two people just come up and poke me in the eyes before. It felt a little awkward. I had never really thought of my lashes being that long, but they do get stuck to my glasses whenever I wear them. Don’t get me wrong; I am not complaining. It was just weird.
After a bunch of women came over to look at me with my head in the sink, I got to get my hair cut. The whole time, the lady was trying to convince me I need to enter a pageant. I politely tried to explain pageants aren’t really my thing, but she kept insisting.
For one, I am not really girly enough to be in a pageant. And secondly, I feel like it sends off a bad message to girls about self-esteem. I don’t see anything wrong with them; I just don’t want to be in one.
How do you guys feel about pageants and Miss America and what not? Has anyone ever asked you a strange beauty question or stopped you because of a certain feature? How did you respond?

Are those coloured contacts?
That’s the one I get…or…
Is that hair colour natural?
Answers
No, that’s just my eye colour…and yes…that hair colour is natural
I feel okay about Miss America but the ones that really irk me are the pageants with all little girls wearing makeup to wazoo and wearing the fake set of adult teeth. To me that’s sending the message that little girls aren’t pretty if they don’t look older…uhm…duh, yes little girls are beautiful! I could feel better about a pageant for little girls if the girls were just being little girls.

I have really really dark shiny brown hair. When I was a little younger it was quite long, and I remember this one lady stopping me and asking if it was real. She thought I was lying and asked who made it and I was like wth? Kinda flattering that she thought it looked nice, but at the same time I was a bit peeved that she thought it was fake.
guest
Wow. I always thought my eyelashes were short, but it never really bothers me. Your eyebrows must be reallllly amazingly long.:)
Pageants don’t really bother me,even though they seem pretty fake. What’s really weird to me is child beauty pageants. Eugh.
guest
That was harsh of them. And rude to keep you waiting like that while they poked at you. You poor woman. All you wanted was a hair cut.
I’ve been asked my eyelashes too. Yes, they’re real. And I’ve been asked if my nails are real. Yes, those are too. I don’t know why I get that question about the nails. They’re cut short.

Haha I’m not pretty enough for anyone to ask me about being in a pageant. I don’t think I would be offended, but I wouldn’t consider it either.
guest
Let me just put it this way, rofl..If the girls didn’t strut around in their bathing suits, do you REALLY think the pageants would be that popular, rofl? And if it’s based on personality and such, the “inner beauty” they try to convince us it’s about, then how come there is not a big hadoo for MEN beauty pageants? When is the last time you saw a man’s beauty pageant? rofl
Sure as I say this now it will come back to bite me in the butt, rofl! I have a beautiful little 4.5-old girl (and yes, I’m boasting, I can…I’m biased and her mother) rofl, but as I said, watch me eat my words if she turns out to be beauty pageant material. I have always sworn I would not get into that if she turns out to be dropdead gorgeous when she’s older..I only pray I’m that loyal to sticking with it if it comes to that,
And just for the record….This is MY personal opinion, rofl,
!

*poke*
haha just kidding.. yeah its kind weid when ppl make those statements.
Should i be offended? Is this a compliment? Should I be flattered?
uhhhhhhh…
child pageants are creepy.

Oh, and I meant to tell you as well. I know just how you feel. People have always come up to me and went on about my hair, asking if it was real as I have SOOO much of it. But by far the oddest situation related to that had to be years ago, when I was in a bar. This woman approached me and asked me if my hair was real or extensions and IF her husband could FEEL, rofl, my hair. Talk about odd. She was like “He thinks you have the most beautiful hair he has ever seen!’ I thought for sure the next question would be regarding a minage awhh twa (however you spell it, I have NO idea), rofl, but it wasn’t!

I think the whole pageant is kind of stupid. It’s just going to get other people jealous & have their hearts ‘broken’.
And I’ve had many people say that I should be a model. I really don’t see any truth behind it though. I’m not beautiful, I’m not real fit, I’m not real tall, & I’m not girly, at all. It’s just because I’m thin I guess. But it only gives the illusion that I’m tall because I’m thin. And people have said that I’m ‘cute’ or ‘pretty’ but that’s only because they are trying to make me feel better or are just flattering me to try and get something. I mean, if it’s a BEAUTY pageant, then I would soooo not win. Not even close.

Haha you went from talking about your lashes to asking the reader about enterting pageants. Funny. Its whatever you want; its your post.
guest
I’ve had people ask me if mine are fake multiple times, and you’re right; it’s SO awkward.
guest
I would love to see a picture of you and “your lashes”, not to sound creepy
guest
I get told I have very nice eye lashes (they’re decently long) and thus very attractive eyes. I don’t see it =P

I wrote a post about pageantry. You can click on my picture on the frontpage to see it! Also, feel free to contact me if you have any questions about pageants and I will help you out!

Lol. lucky you! natural long eyelashes. Stupid asian genes require us to wear fakies. Lol

The Miss America contestants these days seem pretty regular nowadays. I mean, they’re still gorgeous and confident, but in a unique sense. Oh, and they’re about 6’0″ tall…
People think I look really young. Like, 12-year-old young. And I’m 18. This one time, I was in a grocery store with my mom, and the cashier offered me candy…-_-’.
guest
@xxthatsmexx@xanga - ha ha, yeah, when I was 16 some lady asked if I was 11. Fortunately, I think I look a little older now.
@writingsongsforBlair@xanga - I don’t think I have a very good picture of just my eyelashes. It is kinda weird, you only notice the length if you are looking from the side of my face. They get stuck to my glasses all the time with or without mascara..lol. Believe it or not, my brothers both have longer lashes than me.
@Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga - not to sound like a creeper or anything. But I think you are beautiful!

@berisme@xanga - thanks =] I get that a lot because of my profile picture. That’s just the makeup talking though. I look totally different bare [which is how I am everyday].

I’ve been in lots of pageants, but swimsuit ones.. I’m not so good at speaking in public, but it never bothered me to walk in front of people in a swimsuit. They were fun..Until my mom took it waaaay to seriously.
I usually get questions like, “Do you always eat like that??”. I’m naturally thin. I don’t work out like I should..So I’m not the healthiest. And I love sweets and fast food. But I continue to stay really thin.
guest
*sigh, how we all wish we had long beautiful lashes like yours
the rest of us wouldnt have to deal with falsies! haha, people always ask me if im wearing lipstick because my lips are super pink – i guess the skin on my lips are thinner
guest
No, never about my eyelashes.
I can look at your profile picture and guess you aren’t a pageant girl. You are pretty, but not a pageant girl. You have to have a certain personality to be a pageant girl. I have nothing against pageants. If someone wants to enter one, it is their choice.

haha people usually ask me how i get my hair so straight. secret – i wash it? lol. but nobody’s ever told me to participate in a pageant just because of that haha that’s so weird!
guest
i’ve done a pageant before, and i was asked to do two after that.
at first, i had a goal in mind to win because i reallly really am in love with the idea of helping poverty in the philippines [which was a prize for the winner. ] the choreaographer and president of the pageant turned out to be horrible people. but the girls you meet really can make it worth it.
its a lot of money and you put in a lot of work. but hey, i learned a lot about others and myself. so in the end, it really was a great experience.
guest
@Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga - ya but you don’t have to do the pageants bare
anywho was gonna say i know a girl uglier than you who has been in pageants (albeit small ‘uns i think) and wins MONEY (like thousands!) so if you want to, i think you’ve got a shot
dahlia / 2942 posts
@moechataneko@xanga - haha thanks? i don’t have a pageant body though. 5 feet 2 inches, 125 lbs. not gonna happen. :]
guest
Have you ever noticed that when something is really nice, Men say : DAMN! That’s great! and Women say: Are those real???
Kinda is aggravating.

@zretrareo27@xanga - lol. ths is true. and funny.
guest
haha maybe you should not go back to that hair salon!
I entered in a scholarship pageant where beauty is not the priority, but rather talent, knowledge about your culture, and of course, how well you can answer questions. And there was no swimsuit competition so girls and guys alike didn’t have to have a great physique for this pageant.

At least they were conversing in English…

I had an entire dentist’s office gathering around my chair to look at my eyelashes before. Like you, I never really noticed they were particularly long either, even though they get caught on any glasses I wear. And I’ve never had to use an eyelash curler. That’s really about it.
Mostly though, it’s my hair and eyes that get noticed. I have really thick, curly hair and people love it. I also have major huge, round eyes. My eyelids don’t even close all the way when I sleep because my eyes are too big. I’m not joking when I say I sometimes look like an anime character because of my eyes.
guest
I get: are those curls naturals, in reference to my beach-like waves.
Well, yea. Thank god for my mother not allowing me to get it straightened, even when I begged her, since it was all the rage back in ’99 and I was 16, lol.
What people don’t see now is that when I was a kid I had big, black curls. Like Shirley Temple, only dark.
What happened? Dunno. They just decided to become dark brown & wavy, and I love them.

People often ask about my hair. They always want to know if it’s naturally curly.
guest
@unibrowicorn@xanga - I think you meant eye lashes, not eyebrows. Haha.
guest
@Pretending_Is_Fun@xanga - Lol! oops. I wasn’t thinking. My eyebrows are short,so maybe it was a subconscious thing.:P
guest
I have really long curly hair, and I always get people “boinging” my curls (without asking me if they can touch my hair) and asking me if it’s natural. It’s so awkward!
guest
i’m always asked whether my lashes are real. i’ve noticed the trend of girls wearing fake lashes in everyday life, but really, mine are not nearly dramatic enough to seem fake. so yes, and it’s a really disarming question, but flattering.
guest
I have colored contacts and I’m guessing they look good on me because a lot of people compliment me on them. Whenever they ask, I usually tell the truth saying they’re contacts even though the mother tells me to just say thank you and keep walking.
I also have LONG eyelashes. Some people think I wear fake lashes or that I’m wearing mascara or eyeliner, but I don’t wear make up at all. I’m 17. I always say thank you along with a nervous chuckle. :]
I highly doubt I can do pageants. I may have the personality, and a somewhat OK body, but I have many chicken pox spots on back and chest

haha I thought this was about eyelashes?
but yeah I have REALLY long curly eyelashes, being indian, and people always comment on them and say how pretty they are. no one ever asks if they’re fake, because long lashes are pretty common among indians, but mine are freaking long.
I always complain and tell them how my lashes block half my view and how much it hurts when they fall in my eyes – they really do! – but secretly I kind of like the attention :]
guest
I think its up to you if you want to go do pageant stuff :\ they seemed really into your eyelashes though seriously. I wouldn’t go back there unless they gave me a really good haircut loll.
guest
My mom actually thought once that I had eyelash extensions, when in reality they were my eyelashes. And people ask me if I’m wearing blue contacts, when it’s actually my natural colour.
guest
Sometimes girls ask me if my I wear lipstick because I have naturally bright, reddish-pinkish lips. This started way back in the fourth grade and still happens every once and awhile. I never really noticed it. I think I get a lot of comments about my lips though.
But no, I’ve never been urged to enter a pageant. And I’m not too upset about that. :)
guest
I have naturally curly hair, and now that I’ve cut it short, my hair curls into ringlets. People sometimes stop me to ask where I got my hair permed, or what product I use to get my hair to curl so much and stay that way, and they are usually really surprised (and sometimes don’t believe me) when I tell them it’s natural curl.
guest
Im always asked about my hair, its naturally really red.
always has been.
I once was even on the phone in walmart on my birthday matter of fact, and this lady that worked there was like “oh good lordy,is that yo natural hair color?” and since i was on the phone i just nodded, she walked off, came back and said “well oh please, never die it,i know your gunna wanna, but dont.”
but thats bout the only thing. lol
and pageants, ahh its whatever,i pay no mind to em,i was in one when i was little, and won third place, but i was only like 3,so we didnt do it again.
guest
my eyelashes are short and blah, but my boyfriend’s lashes are long and gorgeous! so are my brother’s! i don’t get it….
