Are those Real?

So, I went to get my haircut. I don’t have a regular place; I just kind of jump around every time.  I get there, and they bring me over to the sink to do the whole shampoo thing.

The lady stopped in the middle of shampooing my hair and poked me in the eye.  “Are those real?”

She asked about my eye lashes.  Normally, when someone asks you, “Are those real?” eyelashes are not the first thing that comes to mind.

“Ha ha — yeah, they are real,” I answered with a nervous laugh and a soar neck.

“Okay, wait just right there. Let me get my manager. Don’t move,” she said, walking away quickly.  It wasn’t as if I were just going to leave with a soaked head dripping with water. Cold!  So, I waited. It felt like an eternity and my neck was growing sore from my head being in the sink.

Eventually, she comes back with her manager.  “Look! Look at her eyelashes! See, I told you we could use longer lash extensions on the people that come in!”  Then they both proceeded to poke my eyes and continue to converse about it.

I have never had two people just come up and poke me in the eyes before.  It felt a little awkward.  I had never really thought of my lashes being that long, but they do get stuck to my glasses whenever I wear them. Don’t get me wrong; I am not complaining.  It was just weird.

After a bunch of women came over to look at me with my head in the sink, I got to get my hair cut. The whole time, the lady was trying to convince me I need to enter a pageant.  I politely tried to explain pageants aren’t really my thing, but she kept insisting.

For one, I am not really girly enough to be in a pageant.  And secondly, I feel like it sends off a bad message to girls about self-esteem. I don’t see anything wrong with them; I just don’t want to be in one.

How do you guys feel about pageants and Miss America and what not? Has anyone ever asked you a strange beauty question or stopped you because of a certain feature? How did you respond?
