This question comes to mind whenever I’m in the lower east side at a bar and see an attractive, well-dressed, thin young guy. He’s either gay or super hipster (i.e. straight), but how do you know? My friends and I play this game every week when we venture out.
What do you think about hipster-ish, well-dressed men? Are you into this new style?
guest
hahah well i was in the city with bf, and this gentleman nearby was very well dressed in extremely well coordinated shirt and suit pants. but then we noticed a bodyshop branded nail file was sticking out from his back pants pocket. we had the legally blonde moment.
guest
I prefer men in jeans and flannel to be honest… I guess ’cause that reminds me of my grandpa. And lumberjacks? …
I think it’s good that men can dress themselves nicely, but there is a place and a time to dress nicely and then there’s… well, the rest of real life. Button-up dress shirts don’t belong in bars.

I love it! My boyfriend considers himself to be metro..And most of the time he looks better than I do! I don’t have any problems with it at all. He doesn’t completely over do it though. As in getting his eyebrows done (his are naturally nice).
I don’t really think there’s a way to tell.. Just by talking to them I guess.
guest
whatever floats their boat.

I can not STAND feminine qualities in men, especially in their dress. So I probably wouldn’t wonder or if they were gay or metro….cause I wouldn’t want to be with a guy who was acting or dressing like a girl.
guest
you ask them.
sunflower / 331 posts
Go up to them say, ‘Damn, you are very nice to look at, hey, are you gay?’.
Guys who dress well are great, but it doesn’t mean the world to me what a guy dresses like.
guest
I love it, and I don’t assume gay.
guest
I think it’s very classy when men dress up and don’t look like they haven’t showered in a week.
guest
I believe all men should be well-dressed.
Hey, “every girl’s crazy ’bout a sharp-dressed man,” yeah?
guest
I’ve always liked guys who dress in fitted clothes. Not skin tight, not fit-my-20-member-family baggy. The metro thing is still a little weird to me, and I know that it might look funny in a decade or so. You can’t really tell if a guy is a “hipster” or “gay” unless you can measure that on some crazy radar gun… It’s the luck of the draw, I suppose. Haha.
guest
Most but NOT all.
and the gays usually come in pairs. makes me uber jealous. you got 2 fine men infront of yu, yet, it doesnt matter at all.
guest
I’m an old soul. I loved the days when men dresses like gentlemen and women dressed all feminine. Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for my jeans. I just like looking neat sometimes. I’m on the border with this one though because I do like well-dressed men … but some of them take it to another level. Metro is too much for me. We can dress cute together, but if you are more groomed than I am … it starts to feel a little funny.
guest
Yeah! I guess i’m one of those gays that fall in the stereotype.
But truthfully, it’s a fun game to guess: straight or gay.
terrible though, sometimes i’ll be chasing after a sexy straight guy

I think hipsters are the exact opposite of being fashionable.
guest
you can’t tell by just looking at him. you have to talk to him. the girly-diva voice usually gives it away whether he is gay or not.
orchid / 221 posts
i hate it.. i think men these days look like females.. they all need to eat more.. they all need to work out more and stop being girly.. its not attractive at all.. plus personally i dont want to date a guy thats more into his appearance than i am. or wears tighter jeans than i do.. it freaks me out.. thats why i love my bf.. cuz he dresses like he’s stuck in the 90s and still wears those baggy pants. lolll
guest
I absoulutly LOVE it when guys can look nice and not just dress pants im talikn scarfs jackets messger bags all the above!
guest
My gaydar is broken.
Actually, no. I take that back. I don’t think it is. ANY man can be gay, and he doesn’t have to dress or sound like it. It can be seemingly obvious that a guy is gay, and then 20 minutes later, you meet his girlfriend. Or, you meet a really toned macho guy, and 20 minutes later, you meet his boyfriend.
I think society’s changing the general, mostly stereotypical view of the gay man. And that’s good.

@AllMyNamesAreTaken@xanga - Yeah, I’m all about the jeans and flannel.
I’m not sure what hipster means, but I would never consider the guys in that picture gay. They look like an punk or emo band to me. Gay or “hipster” I’d never even look twice at them.
But yeah, well dressed men kind of scare me, since I am extremely not well dressed. Like jeans and a plain shirt, with no writing or embellishments. Sometimes I wear v-necks, you know, just to mix it up, lol. It’s sad that that statement was actually true.

I think men in suits are sexy.
guest
I think they should bring back the outrageous fashions of the 60′s, and start dressing like Jimi Hendrix or Brian Jones.
guest
i like a guys who can pull of suits and fasion –
guys that seem ” gay ” i think actually have really modern style =)
its diff, i like !
NOT fond of baggy T and jeans, boring……

I LOVE it when guys dress this way!
guest
most of the time i can tell if they are hipster or gay… if their pants are wayyyyy too tight, i’ll just stick with gay.. or hipster2the extreme. which i’m not into.
guest
I prefer my men don’t look gay thank you very much.
guest
lol, I hate “how can you tell” B.S. — go over and talk to the guy if you really wanna know, sheesh. Be brave!
guest
I never consider their sexual orientation – it doesn’t matter – because either way if they are interested in me one way or another, they’ll approach me. I just appreciate that men are taking care of their appearance, being more fashion conscious (and forward) and most of all – practicing FAR FAR better good hygiene and grooming.
guest
And in regards to undercoverfairy’s comment….how can a man “look gay”? There is no such thing as looking “gay”. Only, looking well put together. Thats a really ignorant thing to say.
orchid / 103 posts
I know what you mean – I assumed a guy was just super hipster with his dyed hair, guyliner, and emo-pop style. Nope… he was gay. I even tried to deny it when he was going to a Madonna concert, but… you can’t deny the truth without being delusional!
I have nothing against this style or any style – the individual compatibility and personality matter more than the shoes and clothes, or hyperactive attention to them.

It’s such a turn-on. haha I love guys who dress sharp and metro-like but the thought that they might be gay never occurs to me. I don’t think it’s the way a guy dresses that makes him “seem” gay or not. It’s the whole personality; the way he acts, walks and stands.
guest
I love it when guys dress well. And don’t assume gay….. assume “nice guy” lol

@psykoaznballa@xanga - yeah i’m pretty sure the def. of a hipster is NOT metro-sexual, what i think this blog means

As long as guys don’t wear True Religion, Affliction, Christian Audigier, or any of those horrible brands, he is great in my book.

to be honest, i can’t tell anymore. So many have decided to pick up this trend. I once assumed a straight guy to be gay!

nothing wrong with well dressed guys, not that i ever think if their gay or not. if their well dressed their well dressed same goes for females.
guest
@amissong@xanga - ahaha me tooooo!
guest
in my book: trendy guys > macho furry manly men
oddly enough, i’ve seen a lot of male hipsters dressing like lumberjacks lately. i’ve never found a full beard & flannel shirts an attractive look, personally.
guest
Hey i know they got good hygiene

Try to accept people for who they are. SO WHAT if they aren’t like you?
I hate people who are closed minded and stereotype people. They’re the people that should be ostracized.
sunflower / 453 posts
if you want to know, you ask. it isn’t that hard. it very much annoys me when everyone else thinks they have the right to dictate what other people should or shouldn’t wear. These are the same people that 40 years ago would have been choking themselves over the idea of girls wearing pants to school. Hipster guys are fine with me so long as they’re fine with themselves.
guest
Not all gay guys dress like females and not all straight guys can’t dress, but i guess we are going with stereotypes here.
i live in san francisco, so any well dressed guy walking down the street to me is automatically GAY unless proven straight [stereotype]!
guest
i <3 it =] my boyfriend is cute as hell and he is a total hipster lol =p he wears the deep vnecks the guys skinny straight jeans and the deep vnecks, and trust me he is FAR from gay =]
i think its about time for guys to realize that they dont have to be sweaty disgusting and gross to be manly =]
guest
you can usually tell if one is gay by their walking, hand motions, voice tone, or use or grammar. i think it’s kinda hot for a guy to dress nice. it’s like a guy in a pink suit.. sorta. lmao. okay let’s go with white. or white pants. (usually dancers wear that though).
guest
I love hipster guys.
guest
My husband can be a cute little hipster sometimes. I love the style. I never questioned if he was gay or straight…probably because I knew him through mutual friends that were all straight, and he gave me all the undue attention of a straight guy. Get to know the guy for more than like 10 minutes and you’ll probably figure it out.
guest
Some guys are just trend followers when it comes to the metro look.. You have to keep a masculine edge when dressing like this. Obviously you can’t define what a man can do to make himself get that edge, but it’s not that hard to find it and really perfect the look. I like to keep a little bit of stubble on the jaw with a clean shaven neck, stopped just at the jaw line to help define my face. Also, I consider myself a bodybuilder, but most could agree I have more of the body of a fitness model [at the moment anyway] so I really have to be careful on how tight my jeans are, because I have massive legs, with the wrong jean it makes them look silly. But I fill shirts in just fine. The metro look isn’t for everyone, and I prefer looking a little rugged with a wilder hair style and some roughness.
guest
I’ve seen some guys with jeans that they know very well they didn’t buy them from the men’s department.
guest
Geez, diminishing superficial lines between straight and gay. Sarcastic “oh noes!”
It’s not like I-or most of the other people watching-am ever going to date or hook up with 99.9% of these guys, why not just relax and enjoy the view?
And if it’s socially acceptable for men here in the states to care about their appearance and health, maybe we’d be healthier as a sex and as a nation.
guest
I’ve been trying to dress better as of late. Like mista Dan’l! HE’S A COOL CAT, YOU KNOW
Anyway, I’ve never seen a well-dressed hipster. It is because they have no fucking taste, and are very, very vapid people. Come to think of it, the queers don’t dress very well around here, either. WHELP

What if they don’t know whether they’re gay or not?
What happens then..
guest
I love it..it makes them look sooo clean! Sure, it may be a bit feminine..but I wouldn’t assume that their gay. I just think they have such a great sense of style. I don’t know why, but I find it pretty attractive. HAHA.
guest
OH, and btw, it’s waaaaay better than those bopp-ish baggy pants type of guys. It’s disgusting. LOL.
guest
Wow. Stereotypes hurt my head.
guest
Talk to them no matter what, then you either get a date or a shopping partner.
guest
Being a well dressed “hipster” strait guy myself, i get presented with this question a lot. Some people have thought i was gay i guess just because i wear fitted clothes and have a more edgy style some days.
My question is, does it really matter? It’s 2009, and i think we should be past all these stereotypes and social gender roles.
And in response to the last comment from elusiivelove, i wear really tight “emo” or “girl” pants sometimes, and i’m not gay…on the contrary, my girlfriend loves it. haha

Men that look like women? I am the only one who thinks that’s creepy?!
guest
it’s not gay but i don’t like it though!

I’m totally digging the new style. The best way to get to know if the guy is gay or hipster… go talk to him and watch how he acts. =) For me, I’m totally crushing on a guy who’s a total hipster. He dresses sooo well for his age group, and all my friends (who are his too) make fun of his well-dressedness. I happen to like it, because for me, it’s classier than normal old shorts and a t, or jeans and a t. And by classier, I mean more attractable, instead of in your face better. There’s just something so cute about a guy who dresses well. (i’m talking better then jeans, a t, and a sweatshirt). =D
guest
I think that guys who dress in tight clohes are not very attractive.
To be honest, I like my guys scruffy and not shaven ^_^
guest
Mmm, hipster dress. A lot of guys in bands dress metro and I think that it’s great! They look neat and very put together.
guest
Isn’t that a pic of Hinder?
Anyway, it depends on how the guys dresses etc.
GQ suit-like guys look good. I dunno, it’s always nice to see nicely dressed guys, but these who can tell if they’re gay or not?
They could be like my brother- totally straight, but because he has older sisters who go shopping with him, he has pretty good taste and puts some effort into the way he looks.
Guys and skinny jeans thing is a bit tricky for me. I generally don’t like it, but I have seen some guys who can totally pull it off, and me go damn, he looks NICE.
guest
I LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEE guys that dress nice, but I have no gaydar.
guest
I don’t mind a well-dressed guy; It means he’s neat, tidy, and wants to give off a good impression of himself in society
While I don’t absolutely love it if you’re going to be crossdressing (that is not metero aaaanymooore) I love the fitted clothes, and the nice jackets, and some fashion knowledge
Spiffy ^^

gays do not necessarily all care more about their appearance… i mean, the effeminine gays are not the only gays in the world!
how silly and shallow it is to try to determine one’s sexuality by one’s dress.
guest
I LOVE a well dressed man. Jeans and a plain t-shirt, just don’t do it for me. I’ve never wondered whether or not the guys were gay or not. not based on their clothes anyway. But, when guys are clean and well put together, it’s just way more pleasing.
Have you ever seen memoirs of a geisha? She does that eye trick where you stop a man dead in his tracks with just one look.
Well forget about that and just focus on the look part. If you look at a man and you can lock eyes more then once for an obviously uncommon amount of time, chances are he’s straight.
If you can’t catch his eye or if he doesn’t continue the gaze, he’s either
1. Gay
2. Taken
or 3. he’s not into you
either way, you don’t want to talk to that guy anyway.
guest
I love the new style, I never assume anyone is gay without proof! The whole long haired, skinny jean, vest look is adorable. The Jonas Brothers are kind of killing it though.
guest
yea i def like
guest
i’ve never heard of anything clothing getting it on with any other clothing , so it’s tricky to determine sexual preference of an individual who engages in the act of getting dressed . perhaps this is a question for the church elders .
guest
I love when guys are well-dressed. I don’t assume they’re gay. But if they were gay or not, it doesn’t matter to me. At least they look good.
guest
Okay, I have a few things to point out:
A) Suits and nice clothing is way sexy on guys. It says that they take pride in what they wear and in themselves. I feel this is important in anyone, guys and girls, whether or not they are gay, lesbian, or bisexual.
B) Look at the Oceans’ movies. Those are some damn sexy straight guys wearing suits, button down, or slacks. That’s uber hot.
C) You don’t see people complimenting those craptastic pants that are so low they make guys waddle on the red-carpet or at the grammys do you. No, I didn’t think so.
D) No matter how a person dresses, if they have the confidence to wear it then it’s sexy.

hmmm, well in my experience, hipsters like trendy music and coffee, whole gay guys like penis. So that’s usually how i can tell the difference.
guest
Uh, guys? You DO realize that the “hipster” and “metrosexual” styles aren’t synonymous, right?
guest
Doesn’t matter, their easy on the eye. So why not?

I like the idea of a well dressed man, but I dislike it when they spend more time in the mirror than women do. That’s just a bit weird for me. My boyfriend I like less dressed than I am. I like to make him look good.
guest
Same way you tell if a “normal”-looking guy is gay or not. Ask, or wait for evidence to suggest it.
guest
I don’t assume gay AT ALL.
I assume.. just come from work/ a meeting.
But i love it when men actual have clothes which are.. like an outfit and not just separate, thrown on things. If you know what i mean?
But I like the just rolled out of bed look tooo
guest
ITS HOT if not too metro, like correcting what I wear, and going overboard. I think it is so sexy for a guy to know how to dress in his own way that JUST SO HAPPENS to look fashionable AND STILL be a guy’s guy all that the same time
Sweet!
(Example: Check out Jay from the City….Super Sexi)
guest
It probably doesn’t matter. I’m sure there are plenty of unkempt gay guys out there and (obviously) lots of straight guys who look fabulous.
As for me, I typically wear dress shirts (black and red are my more common colors, but vertical stripes on darker colors are in my tastes as well) and, when cold, v-neck sweaters and sometimes cardigans, along with black jeans/(sometimes) slacks and skate shoes/dress loafers. And always nice (AKA, $20) sunglasses. Heehee. But nothing is ever tucked in to keep it casual. Well, as casual as dress shirts can go.

@devil_undercover@xanga - …PLEASE tell me you’re joking.
81 posts and no one knows? No one says a word about them?
First off, let me say that you definitely picked the wrong picture. Interpol (yes, that’s the band. One of the best ever) wear suits. Carlod D sometimes wears gun holsters. Nothing homosexual or hipster about it. And a good percentage of hipsters are dirty.
How could the two even be confused?
hipster does not equal gay.
hipster does not equal well-dressed or metrosexual.
gay does not equal well-dressed.
We’re lumping separate terms too close to each other.
guest
@nicki_morrissey52@xanga - Oops, yea now that I look closely, it IS Interpol!
And yes, they are one of the best bands around today.
guest
Well, not too much. And I don’t have a good gaydar.
guest
Most of the time these guys will let you know if you talk to them for a few minutes. In my experience the gay guys are usually pretty outspoken about it and will throw in a good lisp or wrist flick or say something obvious like “I’m such a fag!” just to let you know. Femmy guys are really hot.
guest
I know it’s amusing to guess but unless you’re interested in the guy it doesn’t matter. If you are interested then you’re probably going to either talk to him or one of his friends before approaching him…at which point you will either have a good laugh when they give you the bad news or you’ll get the green light. lol
guest
I love it when men dress up. It’s super sexy, and shows that they’re so comfortable with their sexuality that they’re not afraid to look nice for the ladies. Not that there aren’t any gay men who dress nicely, there are, but there are some stylish straight men out there too. More men should take care of themselves and not look like they’re straight from dA h00D or something. But I mean, whatever floats your boat.
