Question of the Day:
(submitted by sambepambe)
I was reading this article and was surprised to see the statistics of which hair style men appeared to prefer. However, after reading the entire article, it didn’t seem that men actually preferred one hairstyle over the other.
Personally, I think that it can all depend on the person, which brings me to the question:
Do you wear your hair the way it is naturally, or do you straighten it/get a perm? Do you prefer curly or straight hair on women? How about men?
daisy / 501 posts
For me, I straighten my hair because it’s qute frizzy and messy if I leave it natural. I can get away with blow-drying it, but straightening is just faster because I let it air dry and then just iron out the kinks. I would curl my hair if I could, but curls fall right out of my hair.
guest
I use a bit of organic hair gel to accentuate the light curl that I have naturally.
orchid / 145 posts
i definitely like it straight and long on myself, because curly hair makes me look a lot older! you’re right, i guess it really depends on the person’s personality and face shape. i do like curly hair on other girls though, just not on me, because i think some girls look sexier when they wear their hair curly or wavy. however, some of the guys that i know including my bf have told me that they like straight hair on women better because they think that it is more youthful and healthy-looking.
guest
i like my men bald. same with my women.
guest
I have naturally curly hair. I straighten it pretty much every single day. My boyfriend, I think, prefers my curly hair more but he does still like my straight hair. Either way its hard for me to manage both because my curls poof if I don’t pile on product and humidity and rain/snow wreck the straight hair even if I do pile on the product. My curly hair makes me look “cute” and young and I think my straight hair makes me look older which is something I really need cause in my opinion I look like a child.

@MimleFruits@xanga - maybe that’s why i like having curly hair! i don’t look like a baby with it! :)
guest
Although I’m an Asian, my hair isn’t naturally completely straight. I got a perm about half a year ago, so the ends are still slightly wavy. I wouldn’t want to get a straightening perm, because I think it doesn’t look natural. I prefer my hair looking naturally nice. : )
guest
If I want to look professional and have a bit of time I blow it straight. If I want to look pretty and flirty I try and leave it natural but doing that is a crapshoot for me because sometimes it comes out very cute and wave/curly and other times it looks like a frizzy, limp, uncombed mess.
magnolia / 1296 posts
My hair is naturally… not curly, not wavy, but a mixture. And I detest it. So I straighten it. The only time it will be worn naturally is when it’s up and I’m having a bad/lazy day.
orchid / 160 posts
I go between really really (naturally) curly which I usually do more in the summer and straightening it which I do more in the winter. I just found a way to make my hair wavy/loose curls with my flat iron. I prefer one over the other depending on the season and the weather.
guest
My hair is naturally curly/wavy, and I’m lucky enough to just have to put biosilk and hairspray to have my hair look nice and tame. So I usually wear it curly whenever it’s humid outside [majority of the year here in Houston] and straighten it during the winter.
for the most part, I feel more chic with my hair straight, and more beachy with the curly hair. so it depends on what look I’m going for.
guest
I used to straighten my hair all the time, and I didn’t really stand out in a crowd. Now, I leave my hair naturally (just straightening my bangs), and I am noticed a lot more than I ever was back in my straight-hair days. I think it depends on how healthy/tame you keep the curls… frizzy curls are a HUGE no. I also think it’s about how confident the girl is, no matter what hairstyle they have.
guest
oh I MUSTT straighten it!!!!!!
my naturally hair is like a combination of curly, wavy to some parts straight… yeah my hairs retarded
sooo depending on my mood I would fix it up and add curls to my natural waves/curls BUT 97% of the time I straighten it.. just so much easier that way…
guest
Lol, my hair refuses to curl for very long…or stayed dyed for very long, for that matter. No matter what I do. It’s famously stubborn.
So, minus fiddling with hair color every now and again (permanent black dye is so far my favorite. It last’s about a month xD, but I’ll also dye the ends with kool aide every now and again, and I like that well enough that I do it more often than black since it’s cheaper), I don’t really change it much. Especially because I don’t believe in cutting my hair xD
Curly vs. straight depends on the lady! Most look good with either though. On me, I absolutely love it curly, but it never stays that way for longer than half a day.
hydrangea / 93 posts
I leave mine natural – curly. I think that women look so much better with their natural hairstyle, especially since their hair tends to be healthier than those who straighten or perm it.
As for my guys? I prefer them with straight hair, but I’ve been with guys with curly hair. As long as they don’t rock the ‘fro, I think curly hair on a man can be very good looking
guest
It depends on my mood, if I want to save time, I just throw some gel in it and let it be naturally curly, but I usually straighten it.
guest
I like to make defined waves or curl my hair, but I simply don’t have the time. My boyfriend prefers wavy/curly hair on me. I have naturally straight hair that I don’t have to straighten, which may seem like a blessing to all the girls with frizzy hair, but it’s a pain in the ass to spend 2 hours curling it.
guest
i texturize my hair
which is kind of like a perm.
i like straight hair
but it depends because sometimes i like curly hair
on my men, it really doesn’t matter.
guest
My hair is pretty loosely curly. Not wavy, but curly.
I used to wear it naturally, until I got it cut. The lady gave me a fringe… so if I don’t straighten it.. I look awful.
So I’ve been straightening it.
Which takes at least 30 min.
Once it grows out, I’ll prob go back to being lazy and let it be.
It depends on how the person wears it and the cut of it, really.
guest
if I have enough time, I were it “natural”– which is wavy.
As sad as it is, it takes longer to make my wavy hair nice than to just straighten it.
guest
I have naturally straight hair – my roommate who straightens her hair is completely jealous of it – but I sometimes wish it were curly. The way I look at it is: I know lots of girls with curly hair who straighten it, and it will stay straight… however, if I curl my hair, the curls are apt to fall out before the night is through. I am jealous of girls with curly hair because I think it’s more unique looking and it stands out in a crowd. However, I usually wear my hair natural unless it’s a special occasion [for example, I curled it on New Year's]. But then again, I really like retro-inspired looks and I personally think 50′s pin-up girl style should make a comeback. ;] Either way, I think it’s like the article says – it’s not really about whether you wear your hair curly or straight, it’s all about the confidence you bring to the table.
orchid / 103 posts
I use waves, curls, or straight hair depending on my mood and the occasion.
guest
boys love when i curl my hair, but they also love it straight since it makes it look longer. i win both ways. haha
orchid / 121 posts
my hair is naturally curly. but I don’t have the kind of face where it makes me look classic, I feel like it makes me look like a little kid, since I have a short stature anyways. so, I definitely straighten it into a nice, swingy bob. but today, I know I’m not going anywhere, so it’s all curled out
it’s cute in the summertime.
sunflower / 453 posts
i have curly hair and I don’t straighten it. I used to in high school, and it always looked like a mess. As it grows out it gets more wavy than curly now (it’s pretty long atm).
In girls, I think naturally curly girls look better keeping their curls. I also just love hair that isn’t straight because it’s a lot more interesting to look at. Curls are gorgeous. I like straight hair if you have short hair but otherwise it’s kind of boring. It’s funny because anyone who goes to parties always has this same picture of three girls next to each other and they’re all identical with straight (dyed) blond long hair. And maybe by themselves they’d be pretty but together they’re just a bore. And these girls are universal, they are at every party in every college.
On guys I can go either way, it depends on how it looks on the guy.
guest
Mine is curly with straightened bangs.
guest
My hair is curly and wild and I love it.
guest
For the most part I wear my hair naturally curly. Every once in awhile I’ll straighten it but it takes me about 2+ hours to do it.
I love my curls and get compliments on them all the time all of my siblings do it’s a family trait. As a teenager though I hated them because I didn’t know how to take care of them so they always looked a mess.
guest
My hair is naturally straight, so I usually just leave it like it is, but sometimes I’ll use a straightner to tame the frizzies.
guest
I really like curly hair but it would look unnatural if I have it because I am asian. I think it really depends on the the person and the shape of their face to judge which style is the best.
guest
i have wavy hair and i leave it as is, i dont think i look good with curly hair
i saw this show and they did an “investigation” on this topic and the results were that guys like straight hair more but im not sure :/
guest
I love curly hair on guys
guest
curly hair looks better in real life whereas straight hair looks better in photos – life’s a bitch!
i wear my hair according to what i wear for the day but usually i wear it just-out-of-bed style
guest
I usually just leave my hair the way it is, which is kinda straight.
But sometimes I straighten it.
My roommate sometimes makes it curly for fun.
guest
I prefer straight hair but that’s just my preference. Curls aren’t bad either but all the styling stuff I need to use for curly hair makes me not liking the curls that much, it’s just ok…….
daisy / 742 posts
Basically, people with curly hair want straight hair, and people with straight hair want curly hair. That’s the way it is, and that’s the way it has always been. People just love changing up their look!
guest
i always ware my hair in pigtails, which look good a little bit curly, so i like to curl it, or wave it. cause even when its loose it looks good like that haha
guest
@strappleberry_xD@xanga - ahahaha thats true =)
sunflower / 294 posts
I blow out my hair. Um, I like both straight and curly hair. Soo… wavy?
orchid / 207 posts
I think it depends on the woman. Also if someone straightens their hair a lot then it gets that look where it is obvious they straighten it then I don’t like it. My hair is naturally wavy and I rarely straighten it. But to help it not be frizzy I put leave in conditioner in after my shower and then it helps it to be curly without a lot of frizz. My sister on the other hand has only a little wave to her hair and she always straightens it.
sunflower / 331 posts
I have very, very curly hair. I’m Icelandic and Italian (as well as many other things) which guarantees unruly curls. I love it, though. My guy friends seem to also, so the curls are my friends.
hydrangea / 79 posts
I straighten my hair every single day.
As for hair on guys, I like the shaggy surfer hair or the bro cut with frosted tips, haha.
guest
I have naturally curly hair that if I let grow out natural, would be afro-licious. I wear it straight or in braids.
sunflower / 353 posts
My hair is such a pain, whether it’s curly or straight. I have these natural ringlets that have a potential for looking cute, but I’d have to put so much stuff in my hair just to keep it from frizzing up. So I prefer to straighten my hair with a flat iron, even though that takes three hours…I only do it once a week when school is in session.
When I got my first hair cut a few years ago, my hair looked really great curly, but since it grew out again it’s just a poof. I can’t stand it.
guest
hmm. i think most peoples natural texture looks the best on them. but then, that can change upon what theyre wearing, how theyre feeling, etc.
i have curly/wavy/frizzy hair, and i dont straighten it. it looks best at the beach with the sand and the salt water volumizing it, but i usually sleep with it soaking wet, and it comes out looking fine. less frizzy than if i shower in the morning, at least.
however, i would like my curls to look like taylor swift’s. i just dont care much going to school… (so i wear it down, or in a pony tail or french braid, and bring a scrunchie…) so i dont take much note of guys attention spans based on the hair styles…
pretty much whatever ones confident about and comfortable with, though.

On myself, it depends on the day – I most of the time like to straighten my hair, because my natural curls can be out of control and I feel self-conscious, though my friends/family say my curly hair is beautiful. On men, I don’t care which curly or straight, so long as he has hair, its not red and its not spikey.
guest
Since I have my hair cut short now, I straighten it whenever I go out. But I always leave my hair natural (curly/wavy) when it’s longer. I prefer curly hair on men though. So cute! : )
guest
I prefer curly hair, but my hair is straight. I’ll curl it because it also looks better in a ponytail, but other days I just let it go as is so as not to damage it too much.
cherry blossom / 48 posts
@Pieces_of_a_Melody@xanga - that’s how i had my hair until this past year… i finally decided to grow out my bangs, which i’ve had since i was small. [well, i'm still small. so i guess i should say when i was young! =)]

Where are the guys?
My hair is wavy. I loooove it curly, though. So, as a treat, I curl my hair.
I like straight hair on guys.
guest
<3 Jennifer Love Hewitt, and she manages to look great with both. Personally, as a guy, I find women with straight or slightly wavy hair very sexy, as long as there’s volume. I think curly hair is for little girls. It looks cute….on a 6 year old girl. Not a woman. Just my preference though.
guest
I love straight long sleek hair. My hair use to be very long but i needed a change in the summer and cut it, but now im growing it back out. When its super long i just blow dry and go, my hair is naturally straight. When i was younger i wanted curly hair and was tempted to get a perm and now im glad i didnt, i really like straight hair. I will admit though a couple of my friends have real pretty wavey hair and it looks good too
guest
I have kinky-curly hair and I love it.
I hate how straight hair looks on me.
guest
My hair is naturally straight, & I like it!
The only times I curled my hair (that I can remember) are for my senior prom & my friend’s debut (18th birthday for Filipinas). It took forever to curl because my hair is thick. -.-
guest
i like straight hair …:)
guest
I prefer straight hair as it looks classy, neat and easy to maintain. However, I also love bouncy curls for special occasions as it looks sexy and beautiful. For me, whether to choose for straight or curly hair depends on the cut, color ,style and face shape, so get the best salon who may does this for you. At the end of the day, your hairstyle reflects your individuality. Be confident and you’ll look gorgeous!
orchid / 105 posts
I straighten my naturally curly hair everyday. If I do wear it curly, I use a curling iron to make cute curls.
As for guys, I prefer straight hair on them.
guest
curly if styled right, but mainly straight-ish (though my hair is crap)
guest
I love my wavy hair. It’s naturally wavy, but when I wash it, if I brush it and then let it air dry without brushing it again, it gets super curly and looks like I got a perm. I wouldn’t even consider getting it straightened, it’s too much fun the way it is! But as someone mentioned, Jennifer Love Hewitt always looks good, no matter how her hair is styled, but she was just blessed with really great hair.
guest
I PREfer them both
guest
Naturally curly. Guys like it better that way, I think.
guest
CURLY ftw!
But then again, curly girls always want straight hair and straight girls always want curly hair.
We’re never satisfied!
orchid / 205 posts
depends, but I think curly hair is hot, but I’m a guy in the women’s section of xanga, so what does my opinion matter?
guest
I leave it naturally straight. Every once in a while I curl it.
guest
My hair is naturally straight, sometimes wavy (especially depending on how it dries or the way I wear my hair up). I like it the way it is, especially when it has a few waves instead of pin-straight if I am wearing it down and long. I like how it looks with curls too, though. Unfortunately, it takes too long to do and frustrates me because they come undone very easily without a ton of product. So I prefer natural.
My boyfriend likes curly hair, but loves my straight hair. He mostly jut likes hair when it’s down and long. I wear mine up most of the time, so when I take it down it’s usually very wavy and he loves it. If I go all out and curl it, he considers it a special treat, same as when I wear it down. So I guess he’s mostly a “doesn’t matter” sort of guy, especially if it’s spiced up once in awhile. His last ex is kind of my opposite, because she had shorter, curly hair and often wore her hair down, but a couple of times a week would put it up or straighten it.
sunflower / 451 posts
Mine is curly. I don’t straighten it because it’s very long and it would take a couple hours, which just isn’t worth the hassle. I sometimes wear it wavy instead of curly, though. I braid it at night so it will have a bit less curl and a bit more wave.
sunflower / 451 posts
@Gerald_Washington@xanga - part of the question was directed at gus, so I’d say it does!
But I have noticed men tend to like their women the opposite of how the women like themselves. Like the girl has naturally curly hair, she hates it, and so she straightens it, but her boyfriend prefers it curly. Or one of my friends in high school complained that her boyfriend never complimented her when she thought she looked nice and always told her she looked great when she didn’t feel like she did.
rose / 847 posts
I always wear my hair naturally (used to be pin straight, but then I got it layered and blahblah, so once in a while, it will have a light wave, especially if I sleep on it wet). The reason is just because I’m lazy… Why should I labour over my hair when I’m just going to come home a few hours later and wash it all out anyway? I don’t even bother putting it up in ponytails or anything…
If I had a very special occasion like a wedding or formal or big event to attend, that’s when I would do something with my hair. The only times I’ve done my hair were for grade 8 graduation (crimped), grade 12 grad pictures and grade 12 grad (curling iron), brother’s wedding (as a bridesmaid, hot rollers), and I tried and failed for one Halloween (hot curlers).

i wear my hair naturally (LAZY!) but i do think straight hair looks better on me – or i just suck at curling it nice
guest
I have naturally curly hair but I straighten it.
sunflower / 448 posts
I love my naturally curly hair, because I can wear it either way.
guest
My hair is curly/wavy underneath and straighter on top. Weird, eh?
I don’t really have a preference when it comes to straight or curly on guys. As long as they have hair, it’s all good.
guest
I prefer curly on myself, because its alot fuller and pretty than it is when straight. My straight hair is too fine.
I don’t think guys have too much of a preferance as long as it’s well kept. But you do get more attention when you try to make your hair look amazing.
guest
I have wavy hair…ehk.. the worst kind of hair because it’s not curly or straight. Through out high school I mostly left it natural or straightened it. Now I curl it pretty much all the time, and when it’s not curled it’s up.
guest
My hair is natural very very curly, and that is exactly how I wear it. Many (maybe most) black women get their chemically straightened but I think curly/kinky hair is finally coming back. Thank goodness. Perms and relaxers aren’t exactly the healthiest thing to do toy our hair.
guest
i have curly hair i love it to death… but i switch somedays cuz i can… i do perfer curly on a man though…. love it!!!
tulip / 7 posts
I found that I personally like the way I look better when my hair is straight. But most everyone else (roommates, boyfriends, customers at my restaurant) like when my hair is naturally curly/wavy. I think I look like an amazon who just got out of bed when my hair isn’t straightened.. but I guess that’s a hot look to other people.
guest
I wear it natural, I simple think I look the best in it.
guest
I have straight hair and just leave it that way. It is too much of a pain to try to curl it and it just doesn’t want to curl anyway. I even had a perm fall out because my hair insisted on being straight. It depends on the person. On a guy I prefer it if the hair is longer because when it gets shorter it can start looking silly.
guest
I wear my hair natural 95% of the time. Other times I straighten it.
As for what I prefer on other people, it depends on the person. I actually don’t care. You can have a crappy hairstyle curly or straight.
guest
my hair is REALLY curly, but not frizzy
mostly girls think i look better w/ curly because its something that their hair cant do naturally
but many guys think i look better w/ straight hair just simply because i look “hot”
i prefer it curly only because its less work
but straight is more manageable
guest
i think that people usually want what they can’t have… my hair is ridiculously straight and i think i’d prefer it to be a little wavy, but i know tons of people who would love to have my hair. and hairstyle definitely depends on the person.
guest
my hair is natuarlly really curly and i usuallt straighten it depending on my mood, if i get it cut short then it’s usualy straight but otherwise it all has to do with what i feel like that day.
guest
I leave mine natural and add a dab of anti-frizz gel to keep it from frizzing out after a day. My hair is very curly and very long. I like it, and I get a lot of compliments on it, so I prefer the natural look.
guest
personally, i think curls have like this awesome way of looking
casual & classy at the same time. straight hair is just too boring
for me, although i do tend to straighten my bangs. but like you
said, it really all depends on the person, occasion, and what you’re wearing.
guest
my hiar consists of many many ringlets. occasionally i will straighten just to spice things up a bit
i like my hair either wavy or straight. my ringlets are okay sometimes…depends on my mood
guest
I wear it curly almost all the time except for the days where I’m in a straight hair mood. I actually like my straighten hair cause my hair is kinda coarse so it actually has volume when it’s straight. I personally think curly hair is more exciting than straight hair, but I think straight hair can be a nice change.
guest
When my hair is long, it’s wavy, and so I leave it that way. Now, I have my hair cut shorter, so it’s straight… so I barely even have to straighten it. I prefer wavy hair. I think it’s pretty
And straight hair on guys, unless they’re lucky enough to have the right kind of wave/curl, and a cut that works with it.
guest
I have just enough wave in my hair that it must be straightened but not enough to do anything with the waves to make it look cute.
tulip / 13 posts
My hair is both naturally curly and wavy. I wear it naturally with lots of gel. People seem to like my hair but maybe it is because of the weird combination that I have. I think having straight hair is easier to manage and can make a woman seem sexy but for me curly hair makes a woman look playful and exciting. However, on men I like hair that I can run my fingers through. I agree with you that it depends on the personality carrying the hair. Beautiful hair is nothing if it is not accompanied with a good personality. It enhances it.
guest
I vary between the two. It’s naturally wavy, but it starts out as a puff then calms during the day. Sometimes I blow dry it straight, so it still has body. Once in awhile I’ll use a straightener, but it makes my hair too flat and I dislike it.
guest
both straight
guest
Bald.
guest
I think it just depends on the guy, and maybe the culture. My mexican guy friend says he likes my curls and think they’re pretty. And my white guy friend thinks I look better with straight hair. Just all depends.
guest
i have natural ringlets. i straighten it from time to time because i look like a different person when i do. i wish i could get my hair in light waves. but until that happens i just throw some gel in my hair and live. and i love guys with curly or wavy hair. dont get my wrong, straight is nice too, but curly is just 10 times cuter and fun with play with =)
guest
i have straight hair, dead straight hair….the only way its curl/wavy if its has TONS of product in it and then its stiff as a board =S, otherwise, it just comes out through the course of the day =)
I like it straight though, so i just leave it =) the only time i do anything *special* (as in put in product or anything) is for proms (i went to two, bf and mine) other than that, i just leave it =)
cherry blossom / 48 posts
@Gerald_Washington@xanga - hey, we like hearing from guys! =)
@LifeStar1622@xanga - i totally agree that it can depend on the culture! it seems like those cultures that like their women curvy also like curly hair?
guest
see, i have straight hair that doesnt always like to stay straight, so i end up blowdrying it for a long time or straightening it. no matter what amount of gel, spray, what-have-you i put in my hair, curls just dont last long. in fact, they usually fall out of one side by the time ive finished the other. so i wish my hair was curly normally, because at this rate it’d just be easier to straighten it when i wanted it straight and then just leave it alone when i didnt.
cherry blossom / 48 posts
@sandy_castle@xanga - that’s EXACTLY why i got a perm!
but to be honest, i think i look like i should have curly hair anyway. i had curly hair as a kid, but then suddenly my hair was straight with a few waves here and there.
guest
I have naturally curly hair. I just absolutely love curls!!! However, the Marilyn Monroe curls, I have to have my hair in a roller set.
guest
I usually let my hair go natural – loose curls.
However, I feel like it looks stupid if I don’t straighten it when it’s short.
guest
well, it all depend on my mood. its not difficult to change one hairstyle in a whim nowadays.
guest
my hair is a little bit curly, a little bit wavy. it’s pretty much a mess, but i’m lazy so i don’t do anything to it. i probably straighten it about twice a year.
maybe i should care more about my hair, but i totally don’t. haha.
