I’ve noticed that whenever I’m out with guy friends they always make the following comments when trying to describe a girl: “Oh she’s cute.” “Whoa, that girl over there is totally smokin’…totally sexy.” “She’s beautiful.” “Hey pretty lady.”

I never understood the difference so I searched for examples of celebrities and tried to analyze my friends’ consistent language. This is what I think they mean:

The Five Stages of Beauty Descriptions

Cute: She has a healthy glow, apple cheeks, doe eyes, and an addicting smile. She seems chipper and energetic. She’s clean and usually fit. Maybe she doesn’t stand out in terms of exotic looks or whatnot but her personality is what always immediately shines through. She’s a golden girl with a golden heart. She’s funny, silly, and adorable. She’s not annoyingly ignorant nor does she rapidly issue out rejections. She’s down-to-earth and has a contagious laugh. She’s the girl who stumbles and cracks up instead of running for cover. She gets her groove on like no one’s watching. She’s the girl-next-door type, the Mary Jane to Peter Parker’s definition of an ideal lady.

Pretty: This girl’s a looker. She’s easy on the eyes and would make a lovely princess with all her wonderful elegance and charm. Usually, she takes pride in looking lovely and makes sure to dress up for every occasion. Her hair is always blown out or curled to perfection. She’s prim and proper. Her nails are usually pink or some sort of opal color and her makeup is just noticeable enough.  She’s an all-around sweet-heart, the class president, the volunteer at the animal shelter, and the perfect spokeswoman. She seems calm and collected. She’s not one to stand out too much in terms of the public eye but she’s no boring Plain Jane either. Parents usually approve of her and she makes a heck of a girlfriend. She’s a classy, timeless lady.

Sexy: This is the most controversial of them all. This woman isn’t necessarily beautiful or cute or just pretty. Her hair’s full and her body is smokin’. She’s fierce, raw, and there’s something about her that sizzles. Even beautiful women aren’t always sexy. Sexy has yet to be defined but perhaps it’s the way she swirls that straw in her drink or the way she oozes across a catwalk or stage. Maybe it’s that half-grin she gives or that smoldering glance. Either way, watch out…this one’s electrifying! Fierce with a double snap and oh so delicious!

Beautiful: Without a doubt, this person is naturally blessed. She’s striking and all eyes are drawn on her when she enters a room. Whether her eyes are an unusual color, her legs long, or her hair long, curly, or red, she lures people in. Most guys are afraid to talk to her because she probably has loads of admirers who are drawn to her exterior. She doesn’t necessarily have to be skinny but she’s very proportional in terms of facial features and body shape. She manages to maintain a sense of dignity and humility despite her gorgeous appearance.

Sensual: This woman has the looks and the bod, but she transcends even the high platform of beautiful. Her eyes are deep and her lips full. She’s voluptuous and curvaceous, a dangerous element but appealing nonetheless. She’s a veela in terms of her hypnotizing appearance but she maintains an air of whimsical innocence. She ages with grace and seems contemplative. She’s not the typical ideal beauty but jaws drop at the sight of her nonetheless. With the face of an angel and the body of a seductress, she makes even the toughest of men weaken at their knees.

With which bracket do you most identify? What do you think of these “beauty” qualifications? Are they pretty accurate, superficial, off-base, etc? Do you think a girl can fit more than one category? Can you think of any additional examples?
