Sometimes, if I’m feeling particularly lazy and the campus is particularly abandoned, I don’t bother changing out of my pajamas to walk 40 feet to the building across from mine, where my mailbox is located. But even then, I feel a little sloppy and/or under-dressed. I would never wear pajamas to class, out shopping, or even out of the apartment building if there are a lot of people around. I see a lot of people doing this though and wonder; have PJs become acceptable outdoor wear? Maybe it’s just that clothes look a lot like PJs now? I don’t mind wearing sweats, I still wouldn’t wear them to class, but I’d wear them to run errands. I know some of the older generation finds this inappropriate as well.
Is it okay to wear pajamas in public or is it inappropriate and lazy? Would you wear your PJs out? How about sweats?

I did that in college, but now I don’t think it’s ok to leave the house in pajamas, the only time I do is if I’m’ driving through Sonic or something and coming right back home. But then I worry about getting in a wreck or getting pulled over! I do wear pajamas around the house…I’m wearing them right now!

@NightCometh@xanga - I do agree. If I’m just going through a drive thru or just picking someone up, I’d just throw on my black sweater, tie my hair back, and stay in my PJs. I’d never wear it out, though!
guest
I wear pajamas around the house. I feel nasty if I wear them outside, but I do it sometimes if I am really sick and have to go get something. I think it’s unacceptable, but if I feel bad enough than I will choose comfort over looks.
guest
Most people would probably find it lazy, but I’ve done it a lot lately. But sometimes I just want to be comfortable. XD
guest
I wear sweatpants out, but I would never wear my green flannel pajama pants to the mall or anything. I used to be a volunteer firefighter and everyone who slept in would wear the “standard” random fire department shirt, basketball shorts, and Adidas slides with socks around the station. None of us would go on a call dressed like that, of course. We’d always pull our running pants (the “fire pants”) on overtop of the shorts.

I find it sloppy and messy. I will never wear it to class. I did however, left my PJ pants on once for an 8AM exam, only because I was going straight to be right afterwards. I felt sloppy that morning and wished I had at least put on sweats. I have worn sweats for quick errands, but that’s as far as it goes.
guest
Lol I see girls at mall in their PJS
Wearing pjs to school (Highschool was okay) for PJ DAY*
I wear pjs around the house
guest
no never, PJs are a no no outside, sweats, I’ve been able to tolerate, but I wouldn’t do it myself. But dear god. Sweats outside are the limit!!
guest
A lot of people..including guys in my high school wear pajamas to class. It looks confortable, but it also looks sloppy and lazy. The girls that wear these pajamas have perfect hair and makeup that day..but wore pajamas? It just doesn’t make sense to me. It’s like they are trying to pull off some kind of look. As for the guys..I don’t think it’s acceptable to wear pajamas in public for them either.
guest
i think it’s sloppy. even if i’m feeling lazy, i’ll at least change into a pair of jeans.
orchid / 160 posts
I never do that, it looks lazy and I don’t feel comfortable doing that. I don’t even like being in pjs to go to a building right next door. I don’t own any sweats either.
guest
I would rather die than wear pajamas to class (even though tons of people at my school are perfectly ok with doing this) and I never wear them out of the house. I don’t really like sweat pants either. The “sloppiest” thing i will wear out in public is track pants. On an normal everyday basis I just wear jeans.
guest
it really depends. i know that once finals weeks roll around, people in the morning begin to show up in pj’s but they actually wear more sweats. i usually wear sweats to class more… i know it’s not dressing up but our campus has this more relaxed feel. it’s weird, ’cause if i went to a more busier and dense school, i would dress up more to class!!

It’s never okay to wear pajamas outside of your own home (or the place where you are currently sleeping like a hotel room). It’s inappropriate and people who do so are lazy. Pajamas were made to sleep in right down to the style and material of them. I think sweats are a little more acceptable as they are actual clothing. However, anything outside of the gym or grocery store would be pushing the limit.
guest
nope… i might wear sweatpants to class if i feel terrible that day, but not pajamas. it looks unkempt.
guest
This is my opinion: if you want to wear pjs in full public view, fine. But few people will take you seriously and/or consider you a valid addition to humanity.
I never wear PJs out of the house. Ever. For any reason.
Or sweats, because I’m a chunky person and they make chunky people look even chunkier.
But I’m okay with sweats as long as the person wearing them isn’t really fat.

We had a wear your PJs to school day so I literally got out of bed & went to school. LOL. I mean I’ve done it before running to the store or a quick errand or maybe going to the mail box. I dont do it all the time so I dont care. I know I dont look like that all the time. I dont go out looking grimy either. I atleast comb my hair. I’ve seen some people do it with a cowlick & pillow creases in their faces.
If I’m going on long road trips, I’ll wear PJ bottoms or sweats too so I’ll be comfy. I’ve seen people drive in PJs then too. LOL
guest
I think that it is not appropriate to wear pj’s out of the house unless you’re going outside to get the mail/newspaper or making a late night fastfood, pizza, or movie run.
guest
i NEVER wear pjs. the only time i did was during spirit week in high school.
and i very rarely go out in my sweats…only time i let myself wear sweats is during finals week.
guest
I agree with everyone saying that it looks sloppy. But I also don’t like the way sweats look…they don’t really look good on anyone. It’s not that hard to throw on a pair of pants to go somewhere-I would feel more comfortable wearing my oldest pair of jeans than pjs or sweats!
orchid / 117 posts
pj bottoms yes. who the hell wears pj tops anyways?
guest
My pjs consist of sweats and old AF shirts so I don’t think anyone would notice if I wore them out in public lol. But I only go out in my pjs if I have to shovel snow outside or if I’m going to the drugstore near my house.
I used to work at a hotel and I’ve frequently seen people (who live there) in their pjs going to the gift shop.. it was just odd to see them dressed like that in the same place as tourists and business execs.
guest
I could wear my pj’s even if the buildng was crowded. lol
guest
as long as they keep you covered who cares… lol
guest
i wear sweats to school a lot, usually on days when i’m feeling fat or sick. i know it looks kind of sloppy, but i don’t really care. a lot of people do it.
guest
I am a nanny so I will wear my pjs to walk the kids to the bus before I come home and shower for the day, but if I am taking them somewhere I will put on real pants…. like track pants, if I am actually doing work for the school or something like that I will put on nice jeans or pants.. the only other time I wear pjs or sweat pants are on trips so I am comfortable. oh and if I wear pjs out or even for around the house I always put new ones on, its never ever the ones I sleep in the night before thats gross
guest
I used to feel like that was one of the hugest not to do. Truth is, people really don’t care what you feel like wearing to the grocery store, or in a Maccy Dees drive thru. If it’s comfy, wear it. Nobody gives a crap.
guest
PJ’s = no
Sweats = yes
sunflower / 353 posts
How lazy is that? But more than once I’ve been tempted to take a five minute walk to the grocery store without changing out of my PJs. At the least, I would change my pants and pull a coat on.
Literally outside the bedroom, of course I have. I’d wear them around the house. If I’m not going out anywhere, I stay in them all day.
guest
It’s not horrible, but it seems lazy. I wouldn’t wear PJs outside.
guest
if i were back in college, just working a hum-jo part-time job and not having to seem responsible for anything except for school again…id totally rock my pj’s all over again.
being in my job now im professionally set to standards because we’re setting examples and we can run into our patients anywhere so itd be a definite no-no nowadays…honestly though, if i were out at the beach or 5 towns over i might still do it. haha we each bring meaning into every moment of our lives…pjs dont really mean all that much to me.
guest
To me it’s kind of unprofessional to wear pj’s to class.
However, I’ve gotten into a habit of wearing black stretch/yoga pants/sweatpants type things…. they are SO comfortable, can be worn with a hoodie or nicer top, or slept in. People never know the difference.

I am 75. I never wear P.J.’s out side. My 50 year old daughter wore her p.j.s outside with red feminine robe as some guys walked by unexpectedly. She won’t do that anymore.
My funniest experience was about 5 years ago in the neighborhood. I was walking the dog around 6 a.m. for a change. A young housewife came running around the corner of her house to pickup her newspaper. She was clearly not properly dressed in her night attire to be outside. It was awkward for both of us. Instinctively, as a gentleman, bent over to pick up the paper for her. Two bad things happened. Our heads brushed as she bent over at the same time, and I will skip this part, but she was additionally embarrassed.
I recommend never going outside the house in P.J.’s
guest
I wear whatever I feel like wearing regardless of what crowd finds it acceptable. I realized it is easier to just be me rather than try to be accepted. Darn. I am a weirdo!

i don’t think it’s bad to wear them when you’re on campus and you’ve got to run to the food court to get food, but I see people in the city walking around the neighborhoods and going shopping in pajamas and that’s not appropriate. it really does make the person look sloppy and careless. i think it’s just the idea that they’re kind of intimate clothing in a sense. wearing sweats around though is different because they are made to be worn outdoors.
guest
Sometimes I didn’t even wear shoes to class in college. But I would never DREAM of leaving the house in anything resembling pajamas now.
guest
Pajamas with prints I would ONLY wear out if I need to walk the dog for 30 minutes… I don’t need to dress up for that, but I do but on a huge jacket on top.
Sweats, I would only wear to school if it’s exams week or if I was up all night and couldn’t sleep. BUT that’s it.
guest
i wear sweats or basketball shorts to class almost all the time.. i’m just too damn lazy to put on jeans, and the comfy pants are much more comfy to sit there for a 4 hour class then jeans are… also sometimes i’ll wear basketball shorts or sweats to the grocery store.. ah yes and i’ll wear them on my way to and from the gym…
if i’m actually going out with friends or going to the mall or something along those lines i will put on jeans and a nice shirt. oh yeah and of course for work too. I only find sweats/pajama pants/bball shorts to be offensive if they are extremely sloppy or dirty or something like that.
guest
on that same note i think it’s kind of stupid when girls put on high heels and a sexy pair of pants and shirt and do their hair and makeup all up just to go to class. who are you trying to impress???
guest
I wore it once, that was pretty much it.
I rather wear sweats.
guest
I think it looks incredibly sloppy–I see most people in my dorm going to class like that every morning, and I feel like I stand out wearing real clothes, but I’d rather look like I want to be taken seriously. Plus, I find when wearing PJs (or sweats, for that matter) to class, I concentrate less overall because if I don’t look like I take myself seriously, then I can’t act serious.
guest
I’m not in college but I still wear my pajams outside my bedroom. I wear them outside my house. I even wear them to school on occasions. But jus like cute pajama bottoms with a t~shirt.

Sweats and slippers I wear all the time when I’m just going out to get something to eat or whatever. But I don’t think I’d ever where PJ’s to frolic around town.
guest
I live in Georgia so people do that all the time.
guest
Finally! Someone who thinks like me. I would never wear jps outside my house, including baggy sweats. Besides, I would never heard the end of it from my mother
orchid / 160 posts
My PJs are usually just gym shorts & a t-shirt. I sometimes wear those out or to class, but otherwise I try not to wear them in public too often. I would never wear actual pajama pants or something like that to class.
orchid / 209 posts
In the house. And it depends on the style of the pajamas, how many fabric.
guest
i wear sweats out if i’m not doing anything in particular, but the pjs stay in the house. honestly, it’s just gross to wear your pjs out of the house if you’re going to wear them to bed too!!! >_<
tulip / 5 posts
I also agree with everyone saying not to go out in pajamas. Granted, I too have gotten the mail which is right across the street however, it looks like people don’t take much pride in their personal appearance when they wear pajamas out all day. I guess I just figure you never know who you’ll run into
guest
Okay so I’m young but I’m a stay-at-home mom. I ran outside in my PJ bottoms ALOT! Even a run or two to the corner store. I do throw on a pair of jeans though if we’re going somewhere, like the park or the mall.
guest
@SeitekiChibiNeko@xanga - lol when you put it like that it does seem gross! but I ironically I don’t wear PJs in bed. I hate the way the get all twisted up!
guest
I’ll walk through the building in my PJs, but I think the only times I go outside in my PJs are if I’m getting pizza delivered to the front door of the building or if there’s a fire alarm going off lol.
guest
I don’t even wear them in the bedroom. But I agree with everyone else, it’s just plain lazy and sloppy to wear them out. I have worn sweat pants to shop and run errands on occasion. As long as they’re nice, I don’t see a problem with it.
guest
just around the house and to the nearby convenience store.. that’s it ^^
guest
I would love to wear Pjs to my college classes. Less hassle in the morning to get ready.
I’d probably wear sweats out and about but not my pjs unless it was for charity.
guest
Depends what you’re doing, where you’re going, and who you’ll be around, but personally, that’s a first impression I would not want to make, ever. I mean, anyway, it’s one thing to wear out a nice pair of sweats, but I see people out doin’ their business in little cartoon character patterned pajama bottoms.
daisy / 568 posts
I feel like an idiot. I don’t know what it is with you people who say it’s sloppy. Some days i’m just too out of it and tired to actually rummage through my closets and drawers to put on a million pair of jeans to see which one looks nice with a top. So i put on a hoodie or a decent looking shirt and I walk out with my Pj’s on. I don’t see what the big deal is. Going out in your Sweats is basically almost the same thing as going out in your Pajama bottoms.
guest
I always wear my pj bottoms when I walk my dog. It is just so comfortable! And I walk her in the morning, afternoon, and night! Other than that, I dont wear pjs outside.
guest
No. Never. Pajamas in public is a major fashion faux pas. I feel the same way about sweats unless the person is at a gym or running or working out in some way.
guest
i sometimes wear pajama pants out. i don’t go out to dinner or a movie with them on, but if I’m going to my friends house for a lazy chill day, i don’t even bother getting dressed.
some people actually wear them to school…that i would never do.
but pajamas are acceptable now, or at least in my generation they are
sunflower / 432 posts
I don’t see anything wrong with wearing sweatpants other than the fact that they look like crap. I only ONLY ever wear them to jog in.
I would never wear pajamas outside of my house, and I don’t want to see anyone else’s pajamas either unless I’m in their home or sleeping with them!
guest
I never wear pj pants in public…they honestly are not comfortable like that to me. I feel wear in them…
Jeans, anyday, everyday, any occassion.
guest
I occasionally wore my pajamas to class if I was running late or feeling lazy in college, but since I’ve gotten out of school I don’t think I have. Not that I think it’s inappropriate or sloppy when done in moderation.
guest
when i was a college undergrad, i frequently wore them to take my midterms and finals.
guest
I think wearing PJs outside is out of disrespect and lazyness towards yourself. As some people said, ‘messy and sloppy’. I take care of myself, and try to look neat and pulled together. But then again I come from Europe and the fashion there is on a higher lever, for example if you can’t walk gracefully in heels by the time you’re 16 approximately, it’s kind of embarassing. Heels are part of an everyday life of an average girl. I dissaprove of PJ outside home. They’re made for sleeping and that’s what they should be used for only.
guest
I believe it’s inappropriate in certain situations where it’s required of you to be dressed nicely, but that’s a given. It’s not inappropriate to wear pyjamas outside on campus, but it does look like you, well, just rolled out of bed, even if you try to fix your hair, which then gives the impression you’re lazy and can’t take a few minutes to look presentable. So I would say take a little effort and put some sweats on, if you want to be comfortable in class because there’s nothing wrong with that. I do it way too often. But at least they look better than still having your pyjamas on.
guest
I have plenty of pairs of adorable pajama pants but I don’t feel comfortable wearing them out and about. I might wear them to a dance recital or marching band competition before I’ve changed, but those are around people I know very well and love. It’s understandable because it’s so early in the morning, usually on weekends.
guest
I do wear them out. You can get ones that don’t even look like PJs. It isn’t like someone points me out and says, “Look at that girl wearing pjs.” As for sweats I usually do that when it’s that time of the month. I was in the store and there was pajama pants at least I think they were since they were in that section and in the regular clothing section there were pants that were pretty much identical so it depends on how they look.
guest
No, I only wear them if I’m buying food through the drive-throughs haha, or I have to return dvds quickly. I’ve worn sweats outside, and that is ok for me.
guest
I’ve totally walked outside in my pajamas – but my pajamas really only consist of a big t shirt and some comfy pants. Nothing too crazy :p
guest
it’s becoming popular with the younger crowds, I don’t mind it so much (though, never done it myself), some of my friends wear their PJs out to school, and there’s no problems there.
I’m actually suprise at all the negative comments.
jeez, i guess the world is more superfical than I thought. What happened to dressing comfortably?
guest
I guess that depends on where you go and what you are doing. I’ve work PJs out before. I would love to wear sweats, but I can’t pull off the look. lol.
guest
everytime I see someone (99.9% it’s a girl) in pjs and slippers in one of my classes I throw up a little
it doesn’t take very long to put some jeans and a tee on
I understand if you’re just going in and out of the house, and going to stay in pajamas because it’s still early or beacuse it’s one of those cold, comfy days…
but pajamas as everyday wear = way tacky
guest
Unless you’re going to your mailbox on your own lawn-pajamas are NOT acceptable outside of your house…this was one of the worst fashion mistakes listed on a tv show recently…one person asked “is your bed outside?” I personally think it looks sloppy as if you have given up on fashion completely. You can choose to either look good and put on presentable clothes or not.
guest
My PJs usually consist of a loose fitting shirt and either super short shorts, long shorts, or scrubs. And I go outside in them and walk around my house. i don’t find anythin’ wrong with with that.
And in sweats, depend on what kind of sweats and where i’m going.

i’m sorry, but for an 8 AM econometrics class, you want to be as comfortable as possible, especially if you don’t have another class afterward. you wake up, roll out of bed, and go to class. i’m completely down with wearing pjs to class if it’s an 8 or 9 AM. other than that, at least throw on sweats. i generally go to the gym before my block of classes begins, so i show up in gym clothes and all sexy and sweaty, haha.
guest
I used to live…literally live in sweats my sophomore year in high school…it was so prevalant it was mentioned several times in my yearbook that year XD. Towards the end of high school it started feeling wierd, and now I wear sweats every once in a while…however I would never be caught dead outside of my apartment in pj’s…aside from taking out the trash.
guest
I don’t.
guest
I wear pajamas to WP practice, and if I’m walking to a friend’s house, or something. If i know the people i’m with are messy, then I don’t care.

I’ve worn pj’s to class…feet pj’s too. It was awesome.
I had two jobs and school, there was no way my give a damn would be working.
