Perhaps it’s the eighties child in me, but I love it when my hair has a little extra volume.
The problem is that my locks are really flat. My stylist always tells me to blow dry my hair upside down. My hair does gain volume from this, but it goes back to being flat the next day.
A friend of mine uses Pantene Pro-V Root Lifter to get that extra volume. It works pretty well.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get great volume? What products or techniques do you guys find helpful?

I don’t know. I’m “blessed” with wavyish curlyish thick hair that often has the opposite problem — I’m not sure how to tame it.
Friends I know use root lifters, hairspray, blowdry upside down, all that….

I have problems with too much volume. My hair is curly and frizzy and can be really poofy. Sometimes I can get it to behave but the next day it will be poofy again.

Dang, I have the same problem. My hair is super thin and sometimes I look really sick. All my friends complain about their haircuts looking like “a massacared black dog on the ground” (LOL) but I have the exact opposite problem! People who touch my hair always comment on how thin it is.

i use a volumizing hairspray first, then blow-dry upside down. then i spray more when i’m done blow-drying, rub a bit of pomade on the ends of my layers, and then just fluff out my hair with my fingertips…..my hair is pretty short though, so you can see the volume easily….

I read no bad reviews about B&B thickening spray, and I even majorly splurged to get some, but I haven’t had much luck with it. I could be applying it wrong…if anybody has B&B experience, do share, cause I spent waaay too much money to chuck that stuff.

haha. i guess we all want what we don’t have. i’ve finally learned to accept my fine, straight hair. i also am lazy when it comes to fixing my hair. i just wet it down in the morning and put it in a ponytail or let it dry naturally b/c hair dryers and extra hair products ruin my hair/scalp=/

I crimp my already-thick hair for that ridiculous 80′s volume. I love it! and surprisingly, I get many compliments.

I use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and Tresemme Flawless Curls Extra Hold Mousse. The mousse is not too heavy or sticky and it gives me just the right amount of volume lift to my semi-wavy hair.
guest
i use the entire pantene volumizing line
then i blowdry my hair upside down
then i add big round curlers to the top sections
also, creamy shampoo’s and conditioners weigh your hair down so when it hits spring season switch to a clarifying shampoo ect.
layers also add volume

My hair decides on it’s own that it’s going to either be medium volume, or super crazy poofy. What I do does not affect it in the least.
Oh well.
guest
a lot of hairspray.
guest
I use Garnier XXL Volume. I spray it at my roots, and hang my head upside down, brush it till it’s dried nicely, and then I just tousel my hair until it’s big enough, adding more hairspray where I need it or if I want it bigger.
And I do it all without a blowdryer
And getting layers helps, too. I got a bunch, and it makes it all easier.

A.G Big Wigg Root Volumizer* its pretty good

i use volumizing hairspray or nothing. i have a lot of hair on my head lol
guest
i dont have that problem, curly hair a blessing and a curse. but i know people who have done the body wave. its more expensive than shampoos though.
guest
You idiots!
Did anyone not think of suggesting TEASING your hair?!
Use a comb and rub it up and down on the roots of your hair.
Spray a little hairspray and then adjust it so it’s not clumpy.
guest
i have really thin, naturally super straight hair, and i hate it. it’s always flat and i wish i knew how to get volume!
guest
blowdry your hair upside down. =)

You could always try blow drying your hair with warm and then cold air the next day. The warm air makes hair cuticles more pliable and the cold air will help set your hair.
guest
Her hair looks really cute in that pic. I wish I could get my hair to curl. I must be doing something wrong cause every time I try curling my hair w/ a curling iron it never turns out, all it does is curl the ends of my hair…never any big curls like she has in this picture..it sucks!!
guest
I tease the hell out of it. And hairspray. I have very flat hair and it works.
guest
Tease & spray!
guest
Actually… After you shower & your hair is dry… curl it with a curling iron, spray it, then roll it up (make sure you roll up all the way to your roots!) and pin it.. like pin curls. Leave it like that for as long as you can. Take it down and voila!!
guest
I have extremely thin hair, and when I blow dry it upside down, it gets TOO poofy. I’ve found teasing it to be effective, though my hairdresser has warned me that it can damage your hair if you do it too often.
guest
well you need to wash it everyday if all your doing is blow drying upside down or else its not dong to stay. i would suggest getting aveda products i do hair at an aveda salon and they are always willing to help you find out the perfect solution for your hair… they always can mix them to better fit you. so thats my advice.
guest
i use pantene volumising mousse. it’s okay i guess. i use air rise gatsby as well. it works really really well
my hair is reaaaally thin though and i hate it

I have TOO much thick hair so I personally have never had that problem, lol, but my daughter who is 4.5 has flat, fine hair. I saw a HSN show the other day where they were demonstrating the “Fat Hair” products so I ordered that. I’m hoping that will pump up her hair.
You are right about blowing drying it upside down. That is short-lived in keeping volume in it, lol.

Sunsilk Anti-Flat. It’s a yellow bottle with a pump and it’s AMAZING! Also, it’s super cheap, like $3. I also love John Frieda’s Volume line. I bought the root lifting spray a few days ago and I adore it. I also love Samy Fat Hair mousse. All are affordable!

I’ve heard that you could actually get this cut/perm to add volume to the back of your head. Ask your stylist if they know about cutting and perming a certain part of the inside of your hair– at the very back (where it is most flat) and then you’ll have a “poof” to that will make your hair look more full. It’s like having a long term tease in your hair!
guest
I have really flat hair too! It’s like straight and thin and stupid. Funny, recently I actually discovered the whole upside-down-blow-dry thing. It works SO well for me, but it does suck that it doesn’t last until the next day, and even throughout the day it gets less and less poofy!
But I think that, right after you blow dry your hair, you could tease it a little and hairspray it (if you like that sort of look) and then it would last longer, though I doubt until morning hehe.
You could french braid your hair wet before you go to sleep and lay it out on your pillow and sleep on your back. That gives a tiny bit of body for me, plus waviness. =]

There’s lots of different ways to get your hair volumed up. Myself have very thin hair so I used to flip my head down and bowl dry, and yes that works, but it can hurt your neck. So i bought a new hairdryer that won’t kill my hair and make it healthier (meaning something that has tourmaline + ceramic) and that wont cost much = Revlon Ion Select Hair Dryer with Tourmaline (at target for $30 bucks. great DEAL!) and they have a “voluminize finger diffuser” which really voluminizes the back part of your head while you bowl dry. And that’s on my regular days, if you want more volume, I usually use a crimping iron to lift the back part up and then just to make sure a have a little section that’s still straight to hide the crimping. and this really works if you volume. You just need to crimping layers of the back and then hide it with a front layer not crimped.
And for the nights when going out and wanna look good – I tease a lot on top of my hair using a teasing comb and sectioning it for all around tease and then combing the top layer to cover it – and this is the max of volume you can get your hair. and also use freezing spray to top it off – i use bigbadsexy hair ($10 at BJ’s) or warren tricomi style superhold hairspray (bought it at bath and body $20). and both really holds hair in shape.

My hair is very straight and flat. Teasing seems to be the only thing that works. Well, the blow drying and all the sprays do work, but they don’t stay after a couple hours it seems like.

i have strait hair, thin hair and i scrunch it almost everyday
but id never have enough volume in it so it looked
dumb. i asked my stylist and she gave me an idea. you put your product
in your hair wet and scrunch it with you hands and
then you blow dry upside down the whole time with
that spiky defuser looking thing! press the defuser
up against your head with you hair in a mess and get it really
dry.
when you done it looks really good. then hairspray
and your done. i do that almost everyday and theres
so much volume its crazyy.
guest
Sunsilk shampoo for people who want volume =)
That and some careful use with a curling iron near the roots.
guest
I have a same problem with you. My hair is super super THIN. Although I tried the hairspray and blow-dry up-side-down, it is the SAME.
guest
I have Asian hair and it’s FLAT. I usually just give up, but sometimes I hairspray upside down.
guest
Here’s a few things that I do…
Flip your head upside and blow dry like you have been.
Mousse and a good round brush with damp hair…lift up at the roots.
Rollers—hott or regular.
Layers and a goooood round brush!
Round brushes are key!!!!!!
guest
John Freidda Volume mousse. I put a little in before I blow dry it upside down. It works pretty well, b/c have flat volume-less hair as well.
guest
Comb it the opposite way of how it grows…just near the roots though…it’ll fluff it up a bit.
guest
use garnier fructis sleek & shine anti frizz serum. it’s hard to add volume if your hair isn’t soft and “healthy” to begin with. once you’ve got a “weightless” shine, you can comb it through and get the desired volume.
you oughtta try it!

The blow-drying upside down works well, but if you want volume everyday, you’re gonna have to blowdry every day.
Try tying your hair into a high bun (using a scrunchie) at night and sleep with it. The next day when you take it out, your hair will not only have volume, but it will also have a bit of a wave to it.
This works really well for me, but maybe it depends on how limp your hair is. Try it.
Also, not using conditioner also helps. Conditioner weighs it down so it looks flatter. Just use shampoo. Experts say to only use conditioner when you really need to. Once a week is enough.
I don’t recommend teasing, because that’s really bad for your hair strands, and spraying it after just makes it look and feel rough.

First off, layers are definitely the way to go. My hair is super thin too, and it likes to make me look sickly, so I went with lots of layers and texture. When you get out of the shower, keep your hair in the towel for about 20 to 30 minutes. When you take it out, just let it dry naturally, randomly fluffing it or pulling it back into a messy bun until it’s almost dry. This works best if you shower at night, because then you can pull the bun apart very loosely and sleep with it around the nape of your neck or very hight on your head (so you don’t get that weird crimpy thing going on by your ears…ew), which gives you body and natural texture. It’ll be dry and ready for styling in the morning, which (for me, at least) consists of flipping the layers out a bit with a straightener and then tipping my head upside down and lightly misting hairspray, which makes the upside-down volume stick even when you go back to normal! Takes less than 10 minutes out of your morning, and you can devote all that extra time to something else – the extra plus is your hair will THANK you for not using so much product and severe heat.
It sounds like a lot of work, but it’s really not. Basically you just have to let your hair dry completely, otherwise it’ll be too heavy and your style won’t stick no matter what product you use or how much. If you don’t like the dry-overnight thing, get a wet-to-dry straightener, it’ll have holes in the top for the steam to vent so you don’t fry your hair (it still has to be mostly dry already, though).
As proof that this works, take a look at my profile pic.
It’s about twice the length now and the layers are way too long, but this still works! Good luck. <3

Its simple really, grad a fine tooth comb and tease segments of your hair at the start of the root to about 3cm up the segment of hair. Spritz a little hair spray on the segments. Do this to half your hair (the bottom half) then leave the top half and you should have overall volume haha. Teasing your hair is key to volume

HEY! There’s a dust paste by OSIS called DUST IT! I use it religously and it gives me some ridiculously awesome volume at my roots.

High layers help a lot too :]

if you’re doing an up-do (even just a half up-do), you can back-comb or “tease” your hair by holding a strand of hair tightly and then combing from the tip toward your head “against the grain.” This tangles the hair a bit and builds up mass. Then you just need to make sure the outer layer of hair is smooth so you don’t look like a rat’s nest and you’ve got a nice up-do that’s not just super flat against your skull. I know they do this at salons. There are a bunch of youtube instructional videos on this. Here’s an example where you don’t even need to put your hair up:

blow dryer your hair upside down for a more natural volume look

And btw , do NOT backcomb or tease your hair .
It’s very bad for it , your hair will get brittle if you do it enough .

I am on the other scale looking for ways to achieve FLATTER hair ,
so .. : )
I blowdry my hair LIGHTLY upside down after I take a shower ,
and I always over do it ..
I see to achieve that voluminous look .. but a tad much > <

try using a volumizing shampoo and conditioner.
then, towel dry your hair til it’s just damp.. put some volumizing mousse, root lift, and volumizing hair spray in it.
flip your head upside down and blowdry it .. stop when it’s almost dry, but not quite yet, and spray it some more (while your head is still upside down so that it holds your hair into this position) then continue to blowdry it until it is completely dry.
you should notice a LOT more volume when you bring your head back up, then you can part it to whichever way you want.. and tease it if it’s not as big as you want. i notice that the back/crown of my hair never gets as thick easily, which is where i want the volume the most.. so sometimes i tease just that area, but try to avoid teasing often cause it can be damaging to the hair shaft.
hope this helps hun! good luck

Blow drying upside-down is a quick fix but if you use a volumising product you’ll get more consistent results. It all starts at the roots, as they’ve got to be strong enough to hold up the rest of your hair.
I recommend Wella High Hair for volume and using a big, round brush for extra root lift. Doing this on a regular basis will give you instant big hair in no time at all.
