I’ve never been big on dresses. I’ve always been more comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt (isn’t everybody?).
Well, the time has come for me to finally step out of my box and into the unknown: dress shopping. I found a dress that I like online, but I always hear people say that certain dress styles go with certain body types, and I’m not sure if the dress I found (above) would fit my body type. I have more of a pear-shaped body (curvier around the hips than up top).
Do you think this dress would look good on a pear-shaped body? Just to clarify, what are the “rules” of style/shape connection?

you might wanna try the dresses on first. certain stores make their clothes differently.

i think that style dress could look good on a pear shaped body if the skirt is flowy. since it’s black i can’t quite tell on here.

Cute! What I can tell you is that dress is not made for the busty girls bc of all the ruffles– it’s meant to emphasize a flatter chest and make it look less flat. So if you fit under that category, that’s good. However I guess that depends on how curvy you are in the hips. If you are significantly bigger in the hips, this dress might emphasize that bc it looks like the skirt will be form-fitting.

It depends on your body, you say you are a pear shape but there may be a lot of variation in that anyway. I’m totally a pear as well, and for the most part anything that is more fitted around the waist and flows out around the hips looks best on me
Try it on, good luck!

where is this from? i really like it!

@Lo0ki3iTzLiLxHui@xanga - the dress is from Charlotte Russe

@serendipity3m@xanga - I thought that ruffles and folds hide bigger items. The dress looks like its for girls with big chests as it is design to hide majority of it.

@awokenfatality@xanga - Ruffles can definitely make girls with bigger chests look heavier on top; I avoid these unless they’re really small ruffles. I think if it’s done a certain way, it can have the hiding effect…but usually ruffles around the collar area have a layering effect and hence adds depth.

Definitely try it on… overall, i believe that dress should be great. it’s black on the bottom half so it will make your hips look smaller (i have the same body type you described – pear shaped)

I think you never know till you try it on but I would say, stay away from heavy prints dresses. The dress is cute but you will never know until you try them on =D btw…I try to stay away from anything ruffles, I just feel fat in them…but that’s just me =D

I’m not sure what are best for pear-shaped bodies, although I recall from a magazine something about balancing top and bottom? But definitely try the dress on in person. A bad thing about shopping online is that you can’t see how something looks on you.

Dear, I suggest you try on the dress before you buy it. Many stores make their dresses differently, and you can never tell until you try them on.
If you have a curvy pear-shaped body, I suggest you try Empire waist dresses. =)

I love that dress, it’s gorgeous!
I too am a curvy woman, I don’t really care what style, if I like it, I get it!

Pretty much ANY type of dress looks good on a pear shape. You might want to avoid dresses with really tight skirts. Anything that shows off your shoulders or emphasizes your tiny waist will be slimming and beautiful.
The cut on that dress in particular looks like it might not be 100% ideal for your shape (it would probably be better for an hourglass figure). But it would be cute – if you like it, go for it.

@serendipity3m@xanga - Actually, I would argue that this would be good for busty girls because it still emphasizes the waist (instead of empire-waist clothing, which would be horrible) and it looks like there’s more room in the bust. Many dresses will simply not have enough room for my breasts (forget the whole shape and color deal – I’m spilling out most of the time!)
Plus the V-neck splits up the breasts a bit so you don’t get the uni-boob effect.

i’d say this’d work, mainly because it’s black on the bottom and that will certainly slim down the hips, with the heaviness at the top, it will really even you out. if you had something to cinch the waist, it’d look perfect!

I wouldn’t personally pick that dress out. But as far as the “rules” go- black tends to make you look slimmer, and lighter colors bigger (as well as horizontal stripes). Since you’re bigger on the bottom, and smaller on the top- the dress will probably go with you, because the bottom is more black and the top is lighter.
However, the fabric is very important too. I wouldn’t go for something that’s too stretchy or thin on the bottom part. That’ll accentuate things you wouldn’t want (like saddlebags, for example).

that’s what the mirrors in the fitting rooms are for. and if you don’t trust your own judgement, take some friends along when you try it on, or even ask the salesgirls how you look. shop in stores and not online, you’ll be better off.

My fave type of dresses are tube dresses! Those that do not cling to my body and instead cinches under the bust and has flowy skirts. Great way to bring attention to your chest insteadof your hips!
guest
girl im a pear shape too and it looks to me like the light material in the skirt would hang off the top of my hips and not be very flattering at all. i’m almost six feet tall and a size 8 but because of my figure i still look a lot better in a dress with more fitted, supportive material through the hip. hope thats helpful

With a pear shape, you want to stick with dresses or skirts that flow away from your hips creating an A-line. This dress looks good for your type because of the volume that is up top. It will create a nice evenness between your top and lower half, but again I would still try it on to make sure the bottom half of the dress is not clinging to your body or giving you too much extra body on the bottom so that you still look disproportionate. Nice pick though!
guest
Oh yeah and as far as top portions go, this pick is a good pick of what direction you should go in.

You need to *actually* try on the dresses, and take a friend with you who knows what they are doing.

In theory this dress should look great on you. My sister has one that’s really similar and while she isn’t pear shaped, all of her curves are definitely in her hips and butt. I’ve tried it on before and it looks horrible on me (my curves being in my bust and no where else).

@awokenfatality@xanga -
@la_faerie_joyeuse@xanga - Hmm well with ruffles that big, I would think it would add volume and make a busty girl look even bigger on top. I guess that’s not necessarily a bad thing though…

I don’t think you can know what exactly a dress will look like on you unless you try it on yourself. And it depends on how much bigger your hips are than your top. I’m bigger on the bottom than on the top, but I could probably get away with it because my hips aren’t huge in proportion to the rest of my body, they’re just bigger than my chest.
I’d say it would work for you if you have the sort of body where you buy the same sized tops and bottoms in the swimsuit separates section, or if there’s a one size difference. But if your top is a size 6 and your bottom is a size 10, it probably will emphasize your hips too much, because it’s a form-fitting skirt.

I think it would be perfect for you! I was just looking at one online because that style is so cute and i love lace. It would work wonderfully on a pear-shaped body. This is how I can tell:
The pattern and detail accentuates features, so it will doll up you upper half,
and The solid black bottom will be slimming and non-distracting around your hips.
These things together will make you appear to have a more hour-glass figure.
