The more I think about it, the more I realize I have no sense of style that I call my own. That thing others call “personal style”? Yeah, I’m not really sure how to achieve it. Sure, I dress nicely and I match, but when it comes to carving out a fashion niche, I have no clue what I’m doing. I don’t even have a wardrobe. I don’t have any clothes I particularly like in my closet; they’re just there for function. I can’t go to work naked, so I just throw on something and hope no cute guys see me.
I’d love to buy clothes I like, but malls make me claustrophobic. I hate being there because in the back of my mind I feel as if they won’t have my size. Every time I start shopping, my skinny sisters can pick out anything and I’m left with the short end of the stick because I’m in the middle. I’m not skinny nor plus-sized, so I’m not really sure where I fit. This can get really discouraging, especially when you try on the cutest shirt and it doesn’t fit because your shoulders and/or your chest overtake the shirt.
I understand that style is defined by adding your special flare to the clothes you own, but what happens if you hate the clothes you have? Do you start from scratch? Getting dressed in the morning is a daunting task for me. The faster I get dressed, the less time I spend complaining about how my clothes don’t fit. I’ve become so accustomed to ill-fitting clothes that it’s like I don’t even bother to change for the better. But I’m a girl and I want to love my clothes and love going shopping to get them.
How did you find your personal style? What advice would you give to those confused about their style?

I have the same issue as you. I still haven’t found my personal style.

I wear things that make me feel put-together; even if it’s something comfortable I like it to be cute.
There’s no label I can really put on my style – it’s just whatever I feel I look good in and, thus, makes me feel good about myself. =D

i wear whatever i like, stacy london and clinton kelly would be very upset

I think my personal style grew on me. I was greatly influenced by my hippie grandma and my metal head mom though, especially when I was younger. I wear things I am comfortable in; and I have a habit of making simple things feel dressy. I think its important to just go with what you feel is right for you.

i dont have a style in particular. i just wear whatever looks cute AND is relatively to very comfortable. The problem with this is that it includes professional, eclectic, punk-ISH, cutesy, biz casual, etc….i wonder if ppl are confused by me now that I think of it. hah..
And other days are purely for comfort (especially test days)
I wish I could wear flats b/c they are so cute but flats and flipflops are both HORRIBLE for the feet. No matter how many times someone tells me Oh, they’re so comfortable! I dont believe them.

I think whatever you wear is your personal style, whether it be comfort, eclectic, colorful, solids, etc, etc. It can even be a combination of more than one. I don’t think personal style has to be so neat and bound, it’s whatever you make it.
My own personal style seems to be dark solid colors of comfort, ha.

My style consists of clothes that make me feel comfortable and cover up the parts that I don’t like to see sticking out. It’s simple.
And I know how you feel about clothes shopping. I don’t really like to shop with friends because I hate it when they’ve got like 10 tops in their arms and they ask, “So, have you found anything?”. I’m overweight and most of my friends aren’t so…I hate it when they ask that question. xD

I really cannot classify my personal style into one label/category. I just buy whatever is appealing to me at the very moment. I also take into consideration what I have in my closet already, but that’s sometimes hard to do when you see something that is reaaaallllllyyyy cute and it doesn’t match the new pair of shoes you just bought.
That outfit featured in the picture is cute, by the way.

i’m very short and totally out of proportion…i can’t wear a lot of the cute clothes i find because they never fit my over my giant shoulders or total and utter lack of a small girly waist >_<
…i wear a lot of sweatpants and jeans with teeshirts LOL

Personal style, IMHO, is whatever you like that you wear.
I’ve got clothing that could be considered punk, goth, rave, kandi kid, lolita (NOT inspired by Nabokov’s book Lolita), 80s, etc… I will wear stipes and plaid if I think it looks cute. I own mostly mini skirts, so I wear tights with them in the winter (sometimes skintone ones. Most people don’t realize I’m wearing them and are like, “Aren’t you cold?!?” xD).
So, just browse, and if you see something you love, buy it. Think of ways to coordinate it with things you own in a way that you like. If you have the money and time to sew, that could also help – the clothing would be cutsom-fitted to you, and you’d like it (I hope).
Shopping can be daunting if you don’t fit the figure the clothing is made for. I remember I was shopping for a dress once and was devastated when none of the sizes fit me – they were either too small for my shoulders and hips, or too loose in the waist ;.; Just keep looking, though – there’s always something out there! =)

Same.. I’m trying to start over so I can fit in my clothes. I jumped from a size small to a large in tees. Hormones went crazy and I went up to a D cup.. now I don’t know how to dress flattering.. so no personal style for me. none of my friends have my body type either so it’s kinda weird to ask someone to go with me.

My personal style varies depends on my mood. My closet in high school went from relaxed prep to punk. I had something for every mood. Now it’s just filled with work clothes and stuff that’s comfy. I think clothes should fit your mood, rather than someone’s idea. And I know about the ill-fitting clothes. For years I was forced to wear a size 3 when I’m actually a 0 or 1. I had to complain and ask for the stores I shop at to carry smaller sizes. You can do the same. If you frequent the place enough they’ll want your business.

I pretty much go for the comfort, but I’m in the same boat as you when I go shopping…I have no idea what to get in order to look good if I need. It’s not such a good thing…if you figure out the answer, let me know…

It’s hard to find my size.
People say I’m super-skinny and I need to gain some weight. My co workers even tried to feed me burritos once, at work. It didn’t matter to me though.
It’s hard to find size 0 pants when it comes to the bigger sales. I tried to find size 0 pants, and I end up getting the closes size to it, which is a size 1/2 pants/jeans. I can never find a size 0 pair of pants when it comes to sales.
Likewise, Charlotte Russe has those $9.99 jeans on sale, and I can never find a pair of size 0, and I always end up getting a size like which is 1/2. It still fits, but the back side is a little loose. Oh well, I guess it sucks being super-skinny, too.
My favorite stores sometimes have size small, but I fit into a xtra small. Guess what? Small is the best they can do, so my clothes sometimes look a little loose. Goodness sake…

I’m pretty sure I have a personal style, I just couldn’t tell you what it is. I just buy things I like. That’s all there is to it.
Take yourself shopping. Seriously. Don’t worry about a thing. If the clothes don’t fit, oh well, just keep looking. If you like something, consider buying it.
Eventually a theme will pop up.

i know what you mean about the not knowing your size.
and i hate how stores have different size systems -__-
i went shopping today. and i got annoyed at jeans– they’re the hardest to find, i think. you might think however, that this is a bad complaint, but it’s hard to find petite sizes at ordinary stores like american eagle .
or at most stores in general. it sucks to be too small for their smallest size. LOL im 5’4, average body.. except i have super small hips. =/

i totally understand! my bra is a size 38 C, im a little chunky, and dont always fit in. The way i found my personal style way basically by first tellin myself that im curvy and proud. after that i just wore things that wernt neccissarily in style, they were just things i thought were cute and flattering. u might not have a weight prob, but wat ev prob u have, all u have to do is find a key part if u that u luv!!!! if u luv ur legs then focus on them instead of wat u dont like. Also if u luv shoes make them ur statment peice. i luv shoes but dont really luv my thighs, so i wear awesome converse to showcase my uniqueness, and that distracts from my prob area. im sure u have a personal style u just might not b comforable with expressin it. Wear somthin that jumps out at u at the store! pleaz do me a favor and dont beat ur self up over not havin a personal style cause u do, just find it by experimenting with things u wouldnt usally wear! srry to give u such an earfull, but i went through the same thing and i cant beleive im in the postion to help someone on this!
