I admit it. I look like a girl, but I sweat like a man. I used to use the Gillette deodorants. A couple of my female friends used them too. One friend’s boyfriend was freaked out, because she smelled like him. “Why are you using guy’s deodorant?” How were we supposed to explain that we’re trying to be lady-like, but we probably sweat more than they do? She switched to Dove.
I saw the Secret’s Clinical Strength Deodorant commercial, where the girl is dancing at the wedding and everything is great, and decided to give it a try. It totally worked. I happily shared the news with my friends, and unfortunately, one of them was health-conscious and went to medical school.
“You shouldn’t use that stuff everyday.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s not good for you. Sweating is a natural human reaction. Do you know how many chemicals it takes for you not to sweat?”
I found this great treasure, and it was being snatched away from me.
“Well what am I supposed to do?”
“Use products that say ‘deodorant’ instead of ‘antiperspirant’.”
Apparently, antiperspirants have aluminum, which in large quantities, can prove toxic. I didn’t even know there was a difference between a deodorant and an antiperspirant. Didn’t one perform the function of the other? She suggested I try Mitchum. I hate that stuff!
I still use Secret. I try not to use it everyday, but it works so well. I mean, I haven’t turned a different color yet.
Does anyone have suggestions on other good deodorants? (Anyone use men’s deodorant?). Are antiperspirants really bad for you?
guest
People have been using antiperspirants for a long time. I could understand them being really bad for you if you were to eat them, or pile them all over your body an inch thick. However, just a thin amount of them in one small area of your body? I mean really, I simply don’t see how that could hurt as much as your friend is making it out to. Plus, I have seen nothing claiming “Death by antiperspirants!” in the news yet.
guest
okay well. this may SEEM disgusting lol but give it a try. sometimes when i get home from school and i know i’m not going to go anywhere i take a thorough showerr and after i get out i dont really put deodorant on. im already clean and im not going out anywhere ill just be home and i guess that would be a good way to keep ur body regulating

Aluminum is connected to alzheimers and cancer. The body has no way of releasing this toxin so it simply builds over time. Not worth it in my opinion. I use an aluminum free natural deodorant. Works great!
guest
I can’t go without deodorant…so I hope it’s not bad for me.

Interesting and informative

Actually, it has been proven that our bodies absorb about 60% of what we apply to our skin. Aluminum is toxic to our bodies, and can cause all sorts of health issues because it breaks down our immune system, amoung other things. Not only that, but there have been studies that show deodorant/antiperspirant in particular is harmful, I’m assuming because of where we put it our body absorbs it all the more.
The majority of cosmetics, including deodorant, have parabens in them (look for any ingredient ending in paraben) which mimic hormones that our bodies reject and can cause tumors, and in turn, cancer. Studies show there is a disproportion of breast cancer cases that are primarily in the upper part of the breast near the armpit, and a higher percentage is on the left breast (researchers assume this is due to the majority of Americans being right handed and therefore apply more on the left armpit).
And your friend is correct, sweating is a natural way our body detoxifies itself. So you don’t want to stop sweating, but you could look for a natural deodorant that has baking soda or corn meal to help absorb some of the moisture. Eating right will also help you sweat less (your body will have less to expel) and the sweat not smell so bad.

I stopped using deoderant. It smells nice but… it actually left my armpits dark! I get so self-concious about waving my hands up in the air. Besides, I don’t need it. It takes a lot for me to sweat and it’s rare for me. It’s not disgusting… I don’t see why people are so taken aback by not using deoderant. I shower everyday, I spritz perfume on all the time and wear clean clothes.
Anyway.. my armpits have lightened up after not using deoderant for the longest time. I still use them, but rarely.

Aluminum is linked to Alzheimers and cancer. That is one of the reasons so many people have Alzheimers and cancer.
There are natural alternatives that are a lot better for you.

I didn’t know that. Anyways, if you’re really that worried about it maybe try talking to your doctor about getting botox injections to reduce sweating. Although come to think of it, there’s probably something wrong with that too. Honestly though, I just don’t find myself caring enough about this aluminum stuff to stop using antiperspirant because it just seems like no matter what we do there’s always something we’re eating, breathing, touching that’s bad for you.
guest
Please do not ever get botox injections!!

The amount of aluminum in antiperspirant that is sold over the counter has been tested and found safe by the FDA for use according to the directions on the label – which usually state simply “apply daily to underarms” or “apply as needed to underarms.” Unless you are putting it all over your body, or re-applying literally every five minutes, you aren’t going to overdose on aluminum from it.

Hmm… well, I only use deodorant in the summer because I hardly ever sweat. I live in Canada (on the West Coast) so it’s usually cold and rainy here. But if I were to live in a place that’s really hot, I would sweat, and I would probably use deodorant everyday! As far as I know, it hasn’t done any harm to me.
Maybe your friend is right though. She’s making a bit of sense. From now on I won’t purchase anything labelled as “antiperspirant”! lol
guest
Uh oh…no wonder my antiperspirant says “apply a thin layer”
Yikes.
I use Arrid XX…of course I still sweat bullets, but its better than deodorants. Deodorants just mask the odor. They do nothing for my sweat. My pits are as humid as a jungle.

Elizabeth Arden : Green Tea Deodorant Cream its $10
It smells soo nice & light/ refreshing
Little bit more pricey than Secret* – but its not antiperspirant

The clinical strengh secret stuff doesn’t work for me
But I’ve found that Degree Ultra Clear works better for me.

Same problem here! I wish girls and bodily bodily functions were more openly accepted. I sweat like a guy too! Maybe worse even sometimes.
I just got Clinical Proof Lady Speed Stick and its working great so far! This whole aluminum thing scares me now…
btw
Deoderant= the fresh scent that “masks” you sweat smell
antiperspirant= the actual sweat-stopping material

Well if I don’t use antiperspirant, I risk getting sweat marks. However, I have used Clinical Strength Secret and it didn’t work for me at all. I used Certain Dri and it worked much better but had no odor protection either. I switched to regular women’s Degree and I’ve never had an issue!

I use a Crystal Stick currently.
Lush has FANTASTIC products that are more of a cream you rub on but smell lovely.
Try thinking differently.
Use a Crystal Stick and then for pretty smells use body lotions and natural solid perfumes like Karma from Lush a little tin that would fit in your purse.
I find this works well for me.
My smells come from my skin in form of lotions organic soaps and perfume and my deodorant keeps me healthy or rather wont give me cancer or Alzheimer.
Your body is supposed to sweat, rather than clogging up your pores with your antiperspirants use something natural and mask smells in other ways.
I also find a couple of drops of an essential oil in my washing machine causes yummy fragrances to come from my clothes as well.
Just a thought.

I used to sweat really badly all of the time. Like, I would just be sitting around and my t-shirt would be soaked, kind of sweat. My best advice to is to go to your doctor and get him to prescribe you antiperspirant. The one I got was this liquid aluminum zinc mixture that I dabbed onto my armpits at night (you still have to use regular deodorant in the morning though, since this stuff has no smell). It burned a little sometimes if my armpits weren’t completely dry when I put it on, but for the most part it was okay. I did this for 2-3 weeks every night, then I stopped using it and it was like “presto you don’t sweat like a guy anymore.” For about a year after that, I used it about once a month, but I haven’t used any for years now and I only sweat when I am exercising and I only use deodorant, not antiperspirant.
The reason I suggest this is because it was a quick fix that you don’t have to use for the rest of your life. So, if the antiperspirant is bad for you, at least you are only exposed to it for a short period of time!

What’s so wrong with using men’s deodorant? Most of my friends use it..
guest
Deodorant is anti-smell, antipersperant is anti-sweat.
I used to use some men’s deodorant… the box thing is red I think. Old Spice? Something like that… not sure if it worked but I did indeed smell like a man. I have the clinical stuff and I use it once in a while. I still carry around (in my purse/backpack, ha) a stick of Ban (antipersperant + deodorant) though, just in case.
guest
I remember when people used to say deodorants were related to breast cancer. That freaked me out lol. Anyway, I use Lady Speed Stick and it works pretty well for me.
guest
Oo.. very interesting post (:
I, too, sweat like a man. So much that I have to use Old Spice (when I’m working out or doing something active). However, I have used Secret’s Clinical Strength, and well, it wasn’t AMAZING. It wore off very soon. I use Secret’s Flawless; even though it’s not the best antiperspirant (I don’t think it even is), it smells great all day!
guest
Antiperspirants aren’t the devil, although it’s probably more healthy to let yourself sweat! Anyway about the aluminum…
1. While more aluminum has been found to be present in higher amounts in some of the studies of the brains of people with Alzheimer’s, no one is sure if it’s just a side effect of the disease (i.e. your brain cannot keep out substances as effectively, etc.) or whether or not it actually contributes to disease progression, OR if it’s just an artifact of brain tissue preservation.
2. There are other risk factors that actually proven and are more important, like staying mentally and physically active.

The danger in antiperspirant is largely it’s location.
When you shave your pits, you also remove layers of skin, making it more susceptible to absorption. So when you put antiperspirant on right after you shave, your skin acts like a sponge (which is kind of the idea, after all), but this is dangerous simply because of the way your armpit is designed.
It’s a harbor to many lymph nodes, which are your body’s filtering system. When you overload on toxic materials (such as aluminum), you’re body has to filter it all, which isn’t the greatest for your poor body.
Let it sweat!
guest
Aw mine says both antiperspirant and deodorant ahha.
Yeah I heard that fact in class too.
guest
oh….
i actually dished out about 15 dollars on a deodorant lately. it’s made with all natural ingredients. you still sweat, but you don’t smell.
it’s a sort of gel thing. it goes on great. it dries clear so you can’t even see it on your dark clothes.
should try going to the local health store and see what they have and ask for suggestions.
guest
I heard that deodorant makes your armpits darker in pigment, and that it may cause cancer.
I am not sure if it’s true.
& I wouldn’t stop using it if I thought of it as being a “treasure”. I don’t use deodorant so I can’t recommend anything.
guest
Oh god, I sweat so much too! I’ve read that deodorant is bad for you, and I kind of understand that reason since we are rubbing stuff on our skin, and for ladies, right by our breasts. I use deodorant everyday unless I know I’m going to stay home all day because if no one is smelling me, I could really care less.
guest
Hey, you only live once. So if you feel gross without deodorant, don’t do it!
I personally wear deodorant about once a week. Some people think that’s gross, but I don’t, and that’s all that matters.
guest
eww. not wearing deo. idk… =/
ill try and find one that doesnt say anti-perspirant though.
guest
I sweat like a guy, please help me,because nothing works, not Secret’s clinical strenght or degree ultra clear, what can I use??,I have sensitive skin also.HELP!!!!!!!!,I am a very clean person I shower everyday,I always put clean clothes,NEVER use a shirt twice.
guest
I only use it in the summer time. I don’t sweat much unless its in the summer!
guest
I’ll start looking for some alternatives and natural odor killers.

Deodorant is just one of those things that people conjured up…I’m sure no one noticed sweaty armpits long ago since everyone had them! Now we have to use it or elevator rides will get pretty unbearable. I do use a special organic one though because although not proven deodorant has been linked to breast cancer so ahhh! There goes that.

I have a horrible “man” sweating problem ((most girls I talk to have that problem too!!!))
I looove dove’s clinical strength, but if you read the directions it says to use it like 3 days a week. It lasts “72 hours” supposedly.
I use that like… once or twice a week. Inbetween uses I like dove’s cucumber melon or this natural crystal that you use right after you shower–let that dry and then put some baby powder on and it works decently enough and smells nice.
Good luck!

the trick is to apply deodorant/antiperspirant right before you go to bed. for some reason it works better. something about your body’s temperature at night.
anyways, apply 2-3 layers right before bed. then when you get up in the morning, put on an additional layer. be sure not to put it on too thick, or else it won’t work as well.
guest
You can find a study somewhere or other proving anything on the face of the earth harmful to your health. just use what works for you and forget it.
guest
I think in moderation using the product is okay. If you eat it, well then yeah it’s probably toxic for the body.
orchid / 194 posts
I have seen stories about antiperspirant being linked to breast cancer…which makes sense because by not letting the glands sweat, it’s basically building up toxins, and if you use deodorant everyday there’s no way for those toxins to be released.
I’m not really a deodorant person. I spray myself with some raspberry body spray every once in a while, but for the most part I don’tworry much about being sweaty and smelly.

dove deodorant, but it’s hard to find the scent i like!

I use a deodorant that specifically says it’s aluminium-free. It’s from Natio (an Australian brand).
guest
I use men’s dedeorant. Mostly b/c I like the way Old Spice smells.
guest
yea, I sweat alot too, don’t used deodarant with alcohol in it, because it turns your armpits black >>”

My fiance bought me, like, ten sticks of organic deodorant. He said that he will NOT put anything on his body that is not all natural and wishes that I do the same. He gave me this deordorant that is made from lemons but it actually makes my pits STINK like heck. Ewwwww and they get all sticky and slimy and SICK. I gave those back to him and said “you can use them, they make my pits reek awful.” I use ban and avon and they work really well although they aren’t good for you I know but at least I’m not sweating like a pig and stinking like one, too!
guest
Why would you use only a deodorant if you sweat a lot? It obv. does just that, deodorizes your sweat. You have plenty of other pores on your body for sweat to come out if it needs to.
guest
i dont think its bad for you! having b.o. is bad for you!!!
guest
I sweat too much to go without anti-perspirant. I use Degree Women Shower Clean Anti-Perspirant & Deodorant and it’s great.
guest
- NATURAL DEODORANTS DO NOT WORK FOR EVERYONE.
- Some of us ladies unfortunately sweat like men and do NEED antiperspirant.
- So back off, cancer-criers
guest
@pillowpixies@xanga - ROFL. I was about to say the same thing only I like your answer better.
I am lucky, I barely have any body hair for sweat to stick under my arms and I barely sweat. I only use deordorant in the summer. I constantly forget to put it on in the winter. When I do wear it, I use Dove. It doesn’t give me a rash.
guest
@Erika_Steele@xanga - (: I’m glad someone agrees with me, lol. This post really made deodorant sound like something that would knock a person dead if they were to even smell it. lol
guest
I’ve heard the aluminum thing and how it can be a source of lots of health issues later on in life. Haha. After that, I got paranoid. Since it’s not so hot in th winter time, I don’t use it as much. There’s always body spray and perfume lol [;
