I know this trend has already reached its peak, but what’s up with the dog in a handbag craze? Having something to carry one’s pet in is quite practical, but I can’t help but think that a lot of people use their dogs as a fashion accessory. No living creature should be used as an accessory, unless it’s a completely willful boyfriend at a family gathering.
I was on the train the other day, and the woman next to me had a chihuahua. This by itself would be okay, but the chihuahua was decked out in a frilly red sweater that would make Katie Holmes look twice. Seriously, my sweaters aren’t that elaborate and girly, and I try. The chihuahua looked really uncomfortable. It blinked and squirted liquid out of its eye (not cute), and then it winked at me!
It was time to get off the train.
Seriously though, is anyone else bothered by the rat dog trend? Am I wrong to say that pets should be pets, and nothing else?

oh i hate this trend too. the poor dogs T_T
the worst my dog ever had to put up with was posing for a Christmas picture with a Santa hat on…afterwards he promptly chomped the hat out of my hand and chewed it up LOL
guest
i’m bothered by it, too /:

What’s worse is that I have seen handbags in the shape of dogs.
O_O
You have to dumb and blind to not see the non-sense in that. Oh… wait . . .

I hate it.

yeah u r right animals should not be treated as accessories!!!!

Pets are called pets for a reason.
If my dog was still alive, I’d love to bring him around with me. As in to the dog park and on walks.
To carry your pet with you in a purse and dress that mop up in fashion accesories is the most ridiculous thing ever.
guest
It’s not all bad, at least you can bring it into places when you have it in a bag!
Also my best friend has a yorkie and he usually ends up carrying it anyways because she gets tired easily but if they leave it at home it gets separation anxiety and craps all over the house. Can’t win with little dogs.
I do tend to snicker at people with dogs in their bags though.
guest
All my handbags are a bit too glamorous to put a mutt in them.
People are delusional. This probably all started with Paris Hilton. But since when was it a good thing to follow someone like that?
guest
The most ridiculous would be dying its fur with a matching colour of the owner’s. Ugh.
guest
ahhh…so true! i think a lot of girls carry them around for attention, so people can come up to them and make them feel popular…lol lames…

wait til the dog poops in her bag

Using an animal as a popularity accessory or statement is wrong. I think that if animals were meant to have clothes and be in hand bags, they would have been like that since day one. Once actions and choices in regards to animals go past practicality and lean towards cutesy and accessorizing.. that’s when it has gone too far.

Agreed. No living accessories, please.

I agree. I like taking my dog with me some places, that is, those who allow it, but not in a purse. I just hate leaving her home by herself unless I have to.
guest
Those rat things aren’t dogs…they are flippin rodents…Def. not a fashion statement whats so ever.
guest
I always feel sorry for the poor dog dressed in shoes or living in a purse…
guest
i’m right there with you! Dogs should remain clothes-free and should walk on their own. D: People who carry their dogs around are snotty-looking bc they’re trying to show who has the better dog. The best dog is a real dog!
guest
Hm, I don’t mind seeing a dog wear clothes, especially if the weather’s super cold and windy. But putting a dog in a bag? For what? To tone your arms?
But then, like some have already mentioned, the owners do it for attention. And they’ve accomplished this goal because we’re talking about it, haha.

I agree that animals should not be treated as accessories…but I don’t agree the negative comments about dressing them up or carrying them in a purse. Some small dogs need warmth. I have a Yorkie and I have sweaters for her. She had to be shaved cuz she got matted so badly. If she doesn’t have anything on she shivers and gets cold in the winter. I do not consider her an accessory at all. I carry her in purses, but only cuz some places will not let her in without her being in some type of bag. Just because shes in a purse does not mean shes being used as an accessory. Some dogs prefer being carried and its easier when they are in a purse. Kennels are very heavy to carry around. I’d rather put her in a cute safe purse than have her jump out of my arms and get run over. but thats how I think of it. Others may think of it differently, but Oh well!

Oh, I hate this trend. And even if I didn’t, I would be hard-pressed to get any dog I’d own into a handbag because I’m a fan of giant breeds: Great Pyrenees, St. Bernard, Newfoundland, etc. You can’t cram 100-200 pounds of dog into a purse, LOL.
I guess this bugs me especially badly because we lost our ten month old Great Pyrenees puppy, Sascha, in August–that’s her picture in my profile photo. She had autoimmune hemolytic anemia and her incompetent veterinarian never caught it despite numerous trips to his office. When she was alive, though, even though it was GREAT to take her out for walks and show her off (it was fun to see the looks on people’s faces when we’d tell them she was still a baby because she was already huge, LOL), that’s not why we got her, and that’s not why we loved her. We loved her because she was our baby, smart and sweet and loyal and funny, because she loved us just as much as we loved her and was always happy just to be with us. To other people she might have been “just a dog”, but to us she was more like an adopted daughter who was short, hairy, walked on all fours and had a speech impediment. The last night of her life, we drove a nearly an hour to the closest emergency animal clinic that could take care of her, then to a veterinary hospital’s emergency room, and spared no expense or effort trying to save her life–efforts that included blood transfusions and trying to restart her heart when she went into cardiac arrest. When she died, we both wept for days. My boyfriend said that when he was in Iraq, he saw people get killed all the time, and never shed a tear. But when Sascha died, he fell apart right along with me. It was weeks before the dark cloud lifted and we were able to go a day without crying. I’m not too proud to say that I still shed a tear over her sometimes, and that I still love and miss my furry girl very, very much.
Having lost what we’ve lost, I just can’t stand people having dogs as accessories. Love your dog, teach your dog, even spoil your dog (God knows we did, LOL). Most of all, know that underneath all the cuteness, there’s a living creature with feelings who loves you and wants to be your best friend, and that’s worth much more than a new pair of shoes or a new bracelet could ever be.

I like the big dogs myself, especially labs and dogs that look a lot like wolves (huskies, malamutes, etc.). The big guys are a little hard to treat as accessories because they have so much personality and don’t fit easily into a purse, haha.
I don’t understand what people see in yorkies and chihuahuas. I kind of feel like the toys are bred to be accessories. I was randomly reading the breeder ads in Dog Fancy when I took my lab/golden mix to the vet. I noticed that all of the ads for breeders of medium to large dogs focused on temperament, trainability, getting along with kids, that sort of thing. The tiny dogs were more about looks: how easy it is to take care of their coats, all of the different colors the dogs come in, etc. As long as the dog is comfortable in their clothes, properly fed/taken care of and otherwise humanely treated, I don’t see anything wrong with treating those dogs like accessories. They pretty much are the willful, eye candy boyfriends.

i absolutely hate this trend!

I don’t think their owners care enough about their pets. Since they are viewed as cute, it’s okay to shove them into a bag, right? Ugh D8 I honestly don’t treat my dogs as pets but as a member of our family. I don’t force my dogs into sweaters and crap. I mean, sure .. if your dog is comfortable and doesn’t try to get out, then whatever.

mmm.. i never thought of that.. though i never got the whole dog-trend thingy. maybe cuz i don’t own a dog. but if i do. i would definiately leave it at home or walk it out~ i mean they need their excerises right? n i know animals love to run, so why put them in a bag? it’s so heavy n uncomfortable!

As a worker at an animal shelter, I hear tonnes of people talking, disdainfully, about this trend. In six months time the phone will be ringing off the hook because suddenly Fifi is not cute, she is an expense! her coat needs grooming, she hasn’t been trained and goes apeshit at the well trained dogs at the park, and oh yeah, she no longer matched their clothes.
Sounds like the Chi you saw needs a vet trip – weepy eyes is not good.

I’m not a big fan of dogs in handbags but I’m guilty of that sometimes, especially when I have to bring my dog to the vet. I have an American Cocker Spaniel who’s very active but since we live in a town, he can’t really run loose or else he’ll be hit by a car. He gets really scared of the carrying cage so we have no choice but to put him in a bag when we drive to the vet. I think that dressing dogs can be ok but we have to look for sign about the dogs’ comfortability. I only dress my dog if the weather is really cold…but if it’s quite hot, I can see my dog’s tongue turning red.. then he would just stay naked as he is..

very weird trend

aaaahhh.. pphhooooeey!!!!!!11 i dont mean to break up the wonderful lil PETA-esque mood.. but …
these cute lil rat terriers and tiny chihuahuas only exist because humans bred them to be conversation and show pieces.. bitches been wearin puppys in their satchels since before the ming dynasty. lol… go ahead and continue to pretend to be dejected by the teacup shih tzu in paris hiltons louis tote while that lil inbred motherfucker (who has the life expectancy of a fly anyway) sports a dog collar worth more than than that car you drive and eats sushi from Katsuya… oh well!

I liked this line…”No living creature should be used as an accessory, unless it’s a completely willful boyfriend at a family gathering.”
guest
Oh man!!
I agree with you on this one. It’s so ridiculous what some crazes are these days, it’s even more ridiculous that some people buy into them.
Awesome blog! Awesome page!

Totally NOT hot.

lol rat dog? i have a chihuahua. i could take offense to it but i wont. hes 14 so i got him waaaayyyy before all this bs started. yeah dogs shouldnt be accessories and it actually prevents internal organ growth when they are constantly held in place of a clutch on the red carpet and elsewhere. “oh look how much money i spent on my purebred mini dog and watch me kill it while youre snapping my picture”

I’m bothered by this too, but I guess it’s thee “fashion” for some girls to use dogs as accessories. What is worse is Macy’s sale those dog shaped purses =(…poor things! I don’t mind people putting their dogs in those dog carries, but what I’m bothered by is when they are put in REAL PURSES!

i hate it! and i blame it all on paris hilton

I sometimes ‘wear’ my rats: i take them out on my shoulders and they like it. They sniff around and then go to sleep in my coat. The reactions I get are hilarious. They’re not accessories though, they are my well-trained pets who like shoulder rides.
One day I took them with me in the train to visit my parents, but they were in a rodent carrying box. I went to sit next to a lady, when suddenly her handbag started wiggling and barking. Naturally I am not going to play with my rats next to a wiggling and barking handbag, so I went to another coupe. But I just felt sorry for the pup: living in a handbag didn’t seem very dog-worthy to me.
Later on the lady came to look at my rats. She didn’t know you could get them tame. But at least my rats don;t live in a handbag, they sat next to me in the train and slept on my lap.

I have a maltese and I have sweaters for him when I take him outside otherwise he will shiver but he hates wearing clothes at home. I don’t understand the whole bag thing though. It’s not really necessary. If a dog has legs and can walk on it’s own then let it. Dogs like to run around anyway. I would never carry my dog in a bag (most of those bags are extremely expensive just for a dog anyway) and he probably won’t even like to be carried in a bag just because he’s so hyper. I’ve heard of lots of people buying dogs just because they’re cute and they want to dress them up and carry them in purses…that just defeats the purpose of a dog. A lot of these little dogs aren’t even trained and do whatever they please and poop everywhere. People need to realize dogs are a living thing not just an item you carry around to show off.

chihuahuas are not dogs. and pomeranians are rats that got wet! omg… dogs in the handbag bug me! A dog is a gaint, furry, wet nosed, puddle loving, living, breathing, dog. not a rat. honestly. leave your filithy little “dogs” at home, and shop with out it. I’m sure he can last at home for 40 minutes. What dog likes to be stuffed in the ugliest thing possible, and carried around and oohed and ahhed at by strangers? i mean honestly!
leave the rats at home, and get a real dog.

@furtherthoughts@xanga - Ha…what about a leash? Cockers aren’t the lightest dogs anyway, I wouldn’t want a thirty pound purse.
guest
@whitetrashpoet@xanga - I also put my dog on a leash.. but I opt for a bag for long rides…There was this once instance that he got loose from a leash so… I’m more careful now.
guest
i do agree that it’s a little bit ridiculous!

I’m soo sick of seeing people who ran out of ways to bling themselves and so had to bling their dog and carry it around.

Dogs should be food.
