I never thought that this would happen to me. I loved my Ceramic Hot Tools hair straightener. I was straightening my hair a couple of days ago and it wouldn’t turn off. I tried twenty times to move the dial from “on” to “off,” but the bugger wouldn’t budge. What’s a non-engineering major to do? It was also beginning to smell a lot like burning cinders — definitely not a good sign. I finally decided to give up and nearly electrocuted myself by taking the plug straight out of the socket.
It was time to get a new hair straightener.
Unfortunately, I don’t know that much about them, except that they cost more than they should. My more beauty forward friends got me the last one (thanks guys!), but I was thinking that I should switch to a different brand. Ceramic or non-ceramic (yes, the former is better for your hair, but it doesn’t really straighten as well as the latter), narrower or wider — it’s all Greek to me. I heard that the Babyliss Pro is great, but it’s also a lot more pricey — $119.99. Is it worth the splurge?
What hair straightener would you recommend?
guest
No – not worth the splurge!! I got a great straightener that’s lasted me for four years for about $60… unless you’ve got hair that’s really difficult to straighten, I wouldn’t invest more.
guest
It depends on how thick your hair is and how often you use it. Daily? Twice a week?
My hair is fairly straight and I didn’t plan to use my straightner everyday, I got a drugstore one for $30.
If you’re looking for a highend one, I suggest the CHI. I’ve heard only good things about it, but it is a bit pricey, ranging from $80 and above.

Remington Wet 2 Straight. It’s about $30 but the straightening effect DOES last. I tried a lot of cheap flatirons that held the straightness only for two hours, but this keeps your hair straight until you wash it. I had one die after 2-3 years, but that’s okay!

Ahas, That’s the one I got, referring to the comment above me.

I have super curly hair that tangles easily and I got a ceramic flat iron (Chi, for $120) and it hasn’t failed me yet. I admit, it’s a bit pricey but I figure to get it to look this good otherwise I would have to go to a salon (which costs money). In the end I think the Chi payed for itself. If your hair is naturally easier to deal with then you could probably find something less expensive.

I have a jilbere de paris one, from sally beauty supply or somewhere similar. One time, about 2 years into having it, it started randomly shutting off. I sent it in and for 5 dollars (shipping), they sent me a brand new one! That was two years ago, and my second one is working wonderfully…..I love manufacturers warranties! It is an excellent straightener. It doesn’t require going over hair a second time, and you can easily get that “stick straight” look.

I never used a straightener or curler before. I wonder if spay water to hair before straightening or curling, would that help? and would that less easy be toasting the hair?
guest
I use a Chi and love it. I have curly hair, and it gets the job done in five to ten minutes. It has worked really well for two years; I wouldn’t trade it for anything. My recommendation: go for something expensive that will last. The warranty will cover it if you have any problems, so you don’t have to pay another $100.00 for a new one.
guest
I would definately recommend the CHI turbo. I’m going on my third year having it and it still works as if it’s brand new. It’s never given me a problem. I’ve also heard the babyliss is great too but some people believe it isn’t worth the price.

@two_days_until_forever - i totally agree with you.
guest
I use Babyliss. It works great and heats up fast, but I don’t really think it makes a difference, I had a Conair for 15 and it worked the same but took half an hour longer to get the same result as a Babyliss
guest
@two_days_until_forever - I love that one too!
guest
BabyBliss, Chi, Corioliss — all of them are pretty good and about the same price in the 100 range
guest
I use a straigtener now because I have bangs that go a little flippy on me.
Remington wet 2 straight…one word…magic…and it’s 30 bucks! My hair is pretty straight to begin with but my sister’s a bit of a curly head and it works wonders. Makes her hair staighter then mine! I never used a straightner before because I had no real need for it but I grabbed off the counter one morning from my sister because I had a piece that wouldn’t work with me…so then I decided to use it on my whole head…complete wonderful hair bliss. Even if your hair is pretty straight like mine it makes it oolala, shiny, soft, and flawless!
guest
After 3 years of non-stop using straightener and after I totally ruined/burned my hair, I must say that don’t buy anything. I wish for straight hair since I was born, but better curly than burned.
guest
Well, there are a lot of good straighteners you can get for cheap…if you don’t mind frying your hair.
If you want to keep your hair at least somewhat healthy, I would go for a ceramic one (even though no straightener is really good for you hair.)I just bought a Solia flat iron from folica.com. It was a little expensive, around $90, but cheaper than most ceramic ones and it works SO GOOD. It makes your hair feel so soft after you straighten it and you don’t have to go over it like 20 times.

I use the MaxiGlide straightener. It brushes your hair as it goes through, which straightens it even better. With other straighteners, it’s just flattening the hair. It doesn’t really “straighten” it.
I’d totally recommend it 100%.
Check it out… http://www.maxiusbeauty.com/

my hair’s really difficult to straighten but i love to wear it straight. recently my pink brand straightener stopped heating up after a year and half of use. before i replaced it, i did some research and i went to the salon where my hairdresser works and i purchased a chi straightener. quite pricey at $179.99 but SO WORTH IT. they’re available at regis hair salons only. with a straightening heat protecting spray, this straightener gets my hair sooo straight, and it only takes about 20 minutes to straighten my hair which is just below my shoulders.
guest
referring to my post above, the straightening effect lasts until the next wash. also, as long as you remove the plug properly, store it neatly, use the on/off switch properly, use the plug cover, and use gentle dishsoap and water to clean the plates when they get dirty, your chi will last years. i have a friend whose had her chi for 9 years, and she’s never had a problem and she’s never had to replace it.
anyways, chi is definitely worth the splurge if you love your hair straight! hope all this helped!
ps-thanks for subbing a_fed.

I have a Chi, and those are amazing. They are pretty expensive, but if you’re going to splurge, get a Chi.

I swear by my like 35 buck target wet2straight remington straightener. it has all of these settings that go up to 30 I think in terms of whether your hair is wet, almost dry, or dry and how hot you want it to get. I only put it on 8, and it makes my hair silky smooth. it defeats the frizzies! of course with any straightener you have to deep condition, etc. to protect your hair but hey.
guest
I use a Conair one that is inexpensive and that you can find in wal-mart. If you’re worried about causing damage to your hair, just make sure to use products to protect it.
guest
i’ve got one but i don’t know where from, my mom bought it.
guest
GHDs are the best. Other straightneers take me way longer than them. I think they are called CHIs in the US though.
guest
I have a wet and dry flat iron that my sister bought me from wal-mart that works really well and you can choose how hot you want it. I have really think hair so I had to get a wide one, but they have diffrent one to choose from, and it wasnt that expensive Or you could look into the Keyoseki straightner it holds in moisture and stuff.
guest
I heard the CHI. 100 something
guest
i absolutely love the Chi Turbo straightener. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but if you shop around online or wait it out, every now and then there’s a decent sale. I got the 2-inch straightener bc my hair is thick and very curly. When I first got it, my hair was to the middle of my back when curly and it would take me about 50 min – 1 hour to get it pin straight…and it would last for days! Now my hair is about an inch past my shoulders while curly and it takes me no more than half an hour to straighten it. I would definitely recommend it. You can adjust the temperature on it as well.
guest
I use the Corioliss Classic Pro and I LOVE it.
it’s ceramic, but it actually works better than anything I’ve ever used — I can straighten my hair in the morning, go all day, sleep on it that night, and wake up with it still looking perfect. it’s amazing.
guest
@justXforXyou_beautiful@xanga - how long have you owned your solia? do you think its better than a chi? i was thinking about getting a solia because i read a ton of reviews on it and it sounds like its the best one (for really course hair).
btw, which one do you have exactly/ do you know the thickness? there are so many choices i dunno which one to get.
guest
Ive gone through about 12 straighteners lol
and if u dont want to send much Remington Wet 2 Straight is absolutely amazing. like everyone who commented about it said its $30 dollars, it lasts and it works, all my friends at my college as well as home that straighten their hair use it
but if u dont mind spending money the CHI is o_O SO great.
guest
thankss for subscribing!

I have the GAMMA and absolutely love it! It was a christmas present 3 years ago and still works perfectly.
Keep away from the revlon´s. they suck
guest
@Soapie@xanga - I’ve had it for only a few months now, but haven’t had any problems at all with it. It heats up really fast and it straightens really well. It used to take me probably like a half hour to straighten my hair but now it honestly only takes me like 10 minutes. I haven’t used a CHI before so I don’t know which is better, but it is less expensive than the CHI.
Here’s the URL to the exact one I have.
http://www.folica.com/Solia_Tourmalin_d1558.html
It’s one of the thinner ones but it works for me because I have shorter hair. I’m sure there are some Solia’s out there bigger if you have long hair, but anyways, yeah I love it and I’d definitely recommend it!
guest
i don’t use a hair straightener but i heard that Clair is pretty good too.
guest
so funny, i just bought my wet2dry remington straightner today! I heard on oprah that it was great so i went to buy it and it is pretty good. You can straighten your hair when its wet and it wont damage your hair. I got it for 24 bucks!
guest
I use a thinner, ceramic Aquage straightener. It works really well for me, but that might just be because I have fair hair and my hair isn’t super wavy. Also, I have no idea how much it costs.
guest
i would recommend a chi. and if not, then get one that’s narrow, not wide. i used to use one by the brand ‘helen of troy.’ i think i bought like 5 of them because they don’t last that long and it made my hair look and smell horrible. the chi at least doesn’t make your hair look like crap right after you use it. it’s kind of pricey but it depends on where you buy it. it’s usually more if you get it from a salon. they have it at bed, bath and beyond for like $100 which isn’t bad at all and they last a long time (and if it breaks, i think it has a warranty or something).
guest
I haven’t used a straightener for… 3 years? I don’t think it’s that healthy for your hair/scalp for all that tagging and pulling. I use Panasonic’s ionity hair dryer to achieve that natural straight hair look. Blowdryers are less harmful than straightening irons, I think.

GHD’s I would reccomend there like £100 I think so what ever that is in $ but i have had 2 sets and they are better than all of the other’s ive tried. Or Maybe MorphyRichards although once they get old its like combing your hair with sandpaper but there cheaper.

Thanks for all your help guys! Does the Remington Wet2Straight come in ceramic? Are there different kinds? Like my hair isn’t that curly; it’s just wavy. Should I get the narrower one?
@oOBuBBLes711Oo@xanga - @XxMaRiSsA_06xX@xanga - Same question for the Chi — I know there are like ten different ones. Which do I go with?

you should check out avanti; last year they came out with a whole bunch of different price ranged straighteners. i like avanti with nano silver (black and red) only $70!! and it is a fantastic straightener.
guest
I have a Global beauty straightener. It’s AMAZING!
it’s really expensive for the newest model but well worth it..
guest
I just bought an inexpensive flat-iron from Meijer and it only cost me about $30. It’s a Revlon, thin, ceramic, and it works just great for me and I straighten my hair about 4 times a week. It doesn’t damage my hair too much ( I make it a point to use good products to keep it healthy) but the one I have works just fine so far.
guest
I have fairly long hair but its not thick – but i bought a revlon from walmart for 30ish dollars and its great!
guest
chi is good & so is the paul mitchel iron.
guest
$119 is expensive!! my mom got me a ceramic straighten for about 30 bucks on sale and it works great! (i think the brand is HAI)
guest
I don’t believe in straightening my hair.
About 2 years ago I read a great book called “Curly Girl” and it taught me a lot of things about how to live with and love the curly hair you’ve got.
Since then I have had Curly Hair Pride even on the days when it really looks more like frizz than like curls (which, thanks to the great advice is very rare). I have also noticed that there is a lot of bias in the media about curly hair. Shampoo and conditioner commercials talk a lot about having “smooth” hair and “silky” hair, and apparently that translates to having “straight” hair. I don’t think it’s fair, and I don’t encourage people to hide their curls because I think it’s a crying shame that so many people do it already.
That being said…I do have a curling iron and straightener from Enzo Milano, which I got for about $50 each. The straightener is ceramic, and back when I used to use it, it worked really well. Other straighteners took me up to two hours to straighten my hair. But this one would do it in 20 minutes. Ditto the curling iron, which is the best curling iron I have ever had, and we used it for my wedding on myself, and all three bridesmaids.
If it were feasible, I would give you mine, since I no longer use heating implements.

i was told that if the two flats show gaps when you close them, then its not worth it. so if you’re going to shop around, test the ones that are out. i saw a few comments about the remington, it sounds like a good product, worth trying since it’s only 30 bucks.
i’d get it, but i have a nano-ion at home that cost me 70, and i have no complaints.
btw, good thing you didn’t get electricuted.
guest
i use CHI and its really good. it heats up right away. my moms a hairdresser and therefore gets all our beauty appliances from exclusive stores where you need to be a liscensed cosmotologist to shop. CHIs are kind of expensive but they work for a charm. if your hairs really important to you in your morning routine and you dont want to spend 50 minutes straightening your hair with a half ass 20 dollar straightener, id recommend getting a CHI or something else thats reliable and fast.
guest
I love my Chi flat iron <3
guest
shop around. i have a chi that i purchased for $50, including shipping from ebay. it’s great!
guest
I got a CHI from one of my mom’s friends for graduation and I was in love the first time I ever used it. I have a limited edition one, which did cost close to $130 but you can get them cheaper. I think it is well worth the splurge my mother, sister, and I are always fighting over it because they want to use it too.
However, if you’re looking for cheaper the one I had before my CHI was a Remington wet “2″ straight, as I saw someone mention above. It does wonders for your hair. Though I wouldn’t suggest actually doing the WET to straight thing as your hair will become rather frizzy and there is nothing you can do. It is good just as a basic straightener and it works decently on damp hair too.
guest
Can Chi use on damp hair? I have remington wet 2 straight. It works great on me!!
guest
I just have a cheap little gold-plated Conair straightener that I picked up at Wal-Mart, and it works like a charm! Of course, my hair is long (almost to the small of my back), super-thick, on the coarse side, and wavy/curly, so it requires a fairly decent amount of heat to get it straight. I don’t use it very often, though, because I usually prefer to smooth my hair out with this tool I have that’s like a hairdryer (housed in the handle) with a round brush attached to it. It takes the higher of its two heat settings to smooth out my hair, and just because of the amount of hair I have, it takes some time, but I get a nice, sleek look without sacrificing volume and bounce.
guest
I just got a Brazilian Keratin treatment done on my hair – no chemicals so it doesn’t change the actual composition of the hair, no damage, and a fraction the styling time. The treatment was pretty expensive but I think it was worth it.
guest
@two_days_until_forever - hell to the yes! I’m glad someone recommended this. It works great for a cheap straightener. I have to use it on my normally-unmanageable hair every day. And I thank god every morning for it when I wake up looking like Ronald McDonald.

I suggest the SEDU, it is used by many Celebrities, straightens in just minutes, and is worth every single cent. In the long run it is worth you money.
guest
Chii. It’s 200 dollars, but boy, is it more than worth it!!!
