Many people have mastered the art of the hair straightener, but we find that few know people what to do with a curling iron. Does the prospect of putting hot tongs next to your face send you running in the other direction? This hair-curling tutorial from a fellow Xangan (who posted this anonymously) shows you how to do it.

The smokey-eye look, the tousled tress look… what how-to tutorials would you like to see?

I watch quite a few of them on YouTube actually. My favorite one is fafinettex3. She’s really cute and currently has 46,000+ subscribers. I also like xteeener. She has really creative smokey eye looks besides your standard black/gray. Panacea81 is by far the most popular one on YouTube with over 120,000 subscribers. Her accent rocks.

Hehe. I never figured out how to use a curling iron because my hair couldn’t possibly get any curlier.
I’d like to see a few tutorials on cute updos for long, curly hair.

I guess the neighbor grass is always greener.
The wavy hair wants straight hair, and the straight hair wants wavy hair. Also, I think trend play a big part.
I don’t need a straightener, my hair are too straight. But I do want wavy hair, coz it gives more volume. Personally, I never use a curling iron before, coz I worry I would burn my hair, or face n finger

@jmgbme@xanga - I have the same exact problem! Try dying your hair and getting bangs. Dye makes your hair thicker, and bangs eliminate the high forehead look.

i do that exact thing, every time i curl my hair – and i leave it in for a minute so that the curls will come out in my thick hair, and it just comes out in this big tangled wave thing. anyone else have this problem?
guest
@Iris - I can’t dye it. Or I won’t, I should say. More than one person has told me they would kill to have my natural color hair and I shouldn’t do anything to it. (see photo)
I’m working on the bangs thing. There’s one musician whose hair I like. I’m not sure if hers is an actual bang or a short sidesweep. I’m trying an imitation of hers at the moment with the sidesweep my stylist just gave me.

I love Michelle Phan she’s awesome. And some of you ladies are asking for a smokey eye tut, she has two different ones. One very simple and basic, and another one that’s a bit more advanced. ^^

that’s not anonymously! that’s michelle phan… ricebunny! give credit where credit is due why dontcha! >=Z

Smokey eyes would be a good one but you would need to do it for several different types of eyes. I have a friend who has very open and wide eyes and she can put on a ton of darker powder around her eyes, but when she tried to do it to my smaller, squintier eyes I ended up looking like a racoon. I think I have mastered my smokey eye look for my specific type of eye — but it would be nice to see any pointers or advice tips!
I love this tutorial. I always wondered how I could curl my own hair. I have very little patience. Haha. So I would probably get kind of ancy towards the top of my hair. I will definitely try it and see how it works.

@testubebaby@xanga - Again, Michelle asked to remain anonymous. It was not our choice, but hers. We were preserving her anonymity to the best of our abilities (and thus took down any comments stating her name, which she did not wish to reveal). We, however, got in touch with Michelle and told her how many people wanted her to step into the spotlight, and she has agreed to list her name under all the future entries she does. Therefore, from now on, you will indeed see Ricebunny on the posts (Check out the Target entry as an example!).
Again, the anonymous option is there, but we hope you share your voice with other readers and do allow us to post your xanga name on any entries you submit. We’re always happy to hear from you!

great tutorial!!! i am considering buying a curling iron now. this is so helpful for people with outta-control-hair like me.
guest
Nice tutorial! I’ll have to try the whole “looser curls in the under-layer, tighter curls in the over-layer” thing. I’ve never had any luck with trying to modify my own curls (making them more defined, tighter, etc.) because every time I tried curling it, my almost-to-the-small-of-my-back-length hair ended up an enormous, shoulder-length, Little Orphan Annie nightmare. I’m gonna have to buy a new curling iron and try this out!
guest
Using flat irons/straighteners to curl your hair (using a certain and common method) is much faster than using a curling iron. When I use a curling iron, it takes me 2 hours to curl my hair.
guest
sooo that’s how you do it!! thanks!!
~xoxo^~”
